Leicestershire breeders reign supreme at the recent Hereford Cattle Society Autumn Show & Sale Kinglee 1 Kevin at 21 months of age, bred by Peter Cobley, Stoney Stanton, Leicestershire, topped Tuesday’s Autumn Hereford Cattle Society Show & Sale at Hereford. “Kevin” the recent Moreton-in-Marsh National Poll Show Grand Male Champion by the 2010 Hereford Bull of the Year, Leos Pride 1 Ellis, weighed 965 kgs at the Sale and sold for 5,000 gns. to Englefield Herefords, Theale, Berkshire.

However, it was fellow Leicestershire breeders, Tim and William Livesey from Normanton le Heath, who swept the board in the Championships. Their 24 month old Normanton 1 Kalidescope, by their home-bred 2011 Hereford Bull of the Year Normanton 1 Eastern Promise, took the Grand and Senior Male Championships selling for 4,300 gns. to commercial beef producers, Portman Burtley Estates, Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. “Kalidescope” weighing 1,005 kgs had had a very successful showing career, as a young calf taking the Reserve Junior National Poll Show Championship in 2013 and returned this year to win his Class. He also has an impressive performance record having qualified as a Hereford Cattle Society Superior Carcase Sire which offers commercial users a calf bonus of up to £500.00. Messrs. Livesey also took the Junior Male Championship with their 17 month old Normanton 1 Krypton, sired by Dendor 1 Harinordoquy. “Krypton” weighing 840 kgs sold for 3,400 gns. to dairy producers, F.G. Brewer & Sons, St. Columb, Cornwall who also purchased the 19 month old Normanton 1 Klitschko, weighing 820 kgs, sired by Normanton 1 Eastern Promise for 2,750 gns. These two Champions had earlier taken the Atok Trophy for the Best Pair of Exhibitor Bred Bulls.

Messrs. Brewer also purchased another of the top sale price bulls, the 17 month old Dieulacresse Knoby, weighing 805 kgs, by Haven Governor for 3,000 gns. from T.A. Spooner of Leek, Staffordshire. Messrs. J.A. Cameron & Son, Leven, Fife sold their 19 month old Baldinnie 1 Diavlo for 4,000 gns. to Messrs. R. & R.I. Shaw, Hallwood Herefords, and Nicholas & Heath, Gowybank Herefords, from Cheshire. “Diavlo” weighing 925 kgs was the 2014 Reserve National Junior Bull Champion at Perth Show and was sired by the prize-winning Dorepoll 1 499 Einsteine. Another son of “Einsteine” 19 month old Baldinnie 1 Connery, weighing 840 kgs, sold for 2,800 gns. to Oxford breeders, E.L. Townsend & Son, Madeira Herefords, Wallingford.

Junior Male Champion Normanton 1 Krypton sold for £3,570

Fellow Scottish breeders, J.R.B. Wilson & Sons, Kelso sold two of the youngest bulls in the Sale, 13 month old Romany 1 Lionheart RE L9 (weight 630 kgs) by Spurstow 1 Recruit 1st for 3,300 gns. to G. Hughes, Wrexham, North Wales and stable mate, 15 month old Romany 1 Lustful ST L1 (weight 680 kgs) by Spurstow 1 Star Bright Future, sold for 2,850 gns. to J. Fielden, Box, Wiltshire. In turn Messrs. Wilson purchased one of the earlier Sale bulls for 3,000 gns., the 18 month old Fardre 1 Hi Hidalgo K956 from G.H. Morgan, Abergele, Conwy. “Hi Hidalgo” weighing 800 kgs a full Canadian bred bull out of the Canadian ET cow, Fardre 1 Heidi Hi and by the Canadian bred sire Harvie Dan Hidalgo ET 193U.

Also down from Scotland Mrs. J.M. Cant & Partners, Arbroath, Angus, sold their 18 month old Panmure 1 Karl, weighing 920 kgs, for 3,600 gns. to P. Cobley, Kinglee Herefords breeder of the Sale’s top price selling bull. Other leading prices included locally bred 17 month old Free Town Kington, weighing 770 kgs, bred & exhibited by R.A. Bradstock & Partners, Tarrington, Herefordshire selling for 3,000 gns. to J.S. Chesters & Son, Chesmoor Herefords, Malpas, Cheshire.

Allman, Greenyards Herefords, Sutton St. Nicholas, Hereford and 19 month old Fisher 1 Kingpin K369, weighing 815 kgs, also selling for 3,000 gns. to D.G. Jones, Tregaron, Cardiganshire. The youngest bull in the Sale, 13 month old Dendor 1 Lomax, weighing 600 kgs, by the 2014 Sire of the Year, Solpoll 1 Gilbert, bred by D.E., E.D. & A.L. Jones of Caersws, Newtown, Powys, sold for 3,000 gns. to K Prettejohn & A Kerslake, Nicholashayne Herefords, Wellington, Somerset. 21 Bulls sold for £65,572.50 to Average £3,122.50 ---------------------------A strong female trade saw all but four of the 38 offered finding a home commencing with the Show Section heifers selling to a top of 3,500 gns. for the Champion 19 month old incalf heifer, Lowesmoor 1 Bikini 905 by Fisher 1 Ensign E254 purchased by J. The Reserve Female Champion, 24 month old incalf heifer, Normanton 1 Irina 7th K172 by 2011 Bull of the Year, Normanton 1 Eastern Promise, bred & exhibited by Tim and William Livesey, sold for 2,600 gns. to G.E. & E. Jackson, Marshland Herefords, Ross-onWye, Herefordshire.

The first two heifers through the ring bred & exhibited by W.J. Hutchings & Sons, Chichester, W. Sussex were the 2½ year old incalf heifer, Fisher 1 Cheerful J351 sold for 2,000 gns. to R.G. Jerman, Montgomery, Powys and another rising 2½ year old incalf heifer Fisher 1 Cheerful J364 sold for 2,400 gns. to P.R. & R.J. Lewis, Corwen, North Wales. The youngest show heifer offered, 12 month old Romany 1 Dawn ST L50 by Spurstow 1 Star Bright Future, bred & exhibited by J.R.B. Wilson & Sons, Kelso sold for 3,050 gns. to A. Thomas, Premier Herefords, Clarbeston, Pembrokeshire. Messrs. Wilson selling another daughter by the same sire, 13 month old Romany 1 Mink ST L36 for 2,250 gns. to E. Rees, Trefochlyd Herefords, Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. Exhibitor of the top price bull, Peter Cobley, saw his first prize-winner 17 month old Kinglee 1 Miss 430 sell for 2,800 gns. to M. The 16 Maiden Heifers offered sold for £23,100.00 to Average £1,443.75 selling to a top of 2,300 gns. for the 24 month old Normanton 1 Amanita 4th K185 purchased by S. Chilman, Kinsham Herefords, Presteigne, Powys. W.J. Hutchings & Sons sold an 18 month old heifer, Fisher 1 Susan K383 for 1,900 gns. to T. Verdin, Garnstone Herefords, Dilwyn, Herefordshire. P. Cobley from Leicester sold a 17 month old heifer, Kinglee 1 Georgina 444 for 1,800 gns. to D. & N. Jones, Hollyhead, North Wales. Breed Society Secretary commenting after the Sale, said it was pleasing to see such a strong demand for females, again achieving almost a total clearance of those offered.
