A “Precious” Moment for Gomer Herefords The Dispersal Sale of the Gomer Hereford herd held at Hereford Livestock Market on Saturday for Tim & Alice Amery and Family, Llandeilo, Carmarthen met with a very solid trade throughout. Sale topper came by the way of the 4½ year old cow, Gomer Precious Pansy F30, along with her 5 month old heifer calf who sold for 4,300 gns. purchased by breeder Mrs. Leslie Jackson, Sparkwood Herefords, Tring, Hertfordshire. “Precious Pansy” was by the very successful Show bull, Mara Chieftain, one of the founder herd sires for the Gomer herd. Mrs. Jackson purchased a further two lots, the 7 year old Gomer Eve 12th, along with her 5 month old heifer calf for 3,400 gns. and the 3½ year old first calver Gomer Diadem H82 with her 3 week old bull calf for 2,200 gns.

Top price family pair were the 5 year old incalf cow Phocle Marina 335, selling for 2,300 gns. to Cathal McGrath, Co. Meath, Eire and her 6 month old heifer calf Gomer Marina L77 selling for 2,900 gns. to David Jones, Phocle Herefords, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire. Cathal McGrath purchased a further two lots, the 7 year old cow, Gomer Precious Pansy D5, along with her 5 month old bull calf, Gomer Lambert, for 2,400 gns. and 7 year old Haven Curly 102nd with her two week old bull calf for 1,900 gns.

Other leading pair prices included – the 3 year old cow, Gomer Curly J4, purchased for 2,500 gns. by Phil & Laura Vincent, Pulham Herefords, Diss, Norfolk and her 8 month old heifer calf, Gomer Curley L69, selling for 1,500 gns. to newcomer to the Breed, T. Clarke, Narberth, Pembrokeshire – the 7 year old Phocle Dowager 282D purchased for 2,300 gns. by another newcomer to the Breed, P.W. Smith, Peterchurch, Herefordshire and her 6 month old heifer calf selling for 2,000 gns. to T. Clarke, Pembrokeshire. Mr. Smith also purchased a further two cows and calves, 10 year old Border Queen B80, with her heifer calf for 1,800 gns. and 7 year old Haven Prunella 40th with her heifer calf for 2,200 gns.
S. Chilman, Kinsham Herefords, Presteigne, Powys, paid 3,000 gns. for the 3 year old first calver, Gomer Kate H95, along with her 6 month old bull calf. Adding to his recently founded herd, Mr. R.J. Verdin, Garnstone Herefords, Weobley, Herefordshire purchased a 4 year old cow, Gomer Precious Pansy G69, along with her bull calf for 2,200 gns. and another 4 year old cow, Gomer Diamdem G73 with her heifer calf for 2,900 gns.

Down at the Sale from Derbyshire, Walker Farms Ltd., Humblebee Grange Herefords, Ashbourne purchased 10 year old Laxfield Diadem 44th, along with her heifer calf for 2,650 gns. and the incalf 3 year old cow, Gomer Beauty H94 for 2,000 gns. Leading the incalf heifers was the 2 year old Gomer Curly selling for 3,500 gns. to A.J. & E.C. Crooke, Olympus Herefords, Stratford-upon-Avon and the 2½ year old, Gomer Precious Pansy J21, sold for 2,800 gns. to M. Sealey, Barrow Wood Herefords, Cheddar, Somerset. Rodbaston College, Penkridge, Staffordshire purchased 4 females to add to their Rodbaston herd, the 4 year old incalf cow, Gomer Beauty J5 for 2,100 gns., 4½ year old Gomer Clara G62, along with her heifer calf for 2,550 gns. and two incalf heifers, Gomer Diadem J16 and Phocle Dowager 438X for 2,250 gns. and 2,100 gns. respectively. The only two bulling heifers in the Sale, both 12 months of age, Gomer Beauty L66 and Gomer Diadem L65, sold for 1,850 gns. and 1,800 gns. respectively to Byron Head, Barnt Green Herefords, Barnt Green, Birmingham. Leading the young bull section was the 17 month old Gomer Kurt K57, selling for 1,900 gns. to S.F. Moore, Nantypopty Herefords, Llandysul, Ceredigion. Mr. Moore had earlier in the Sale purchased two cows and calves, 4½ year old Gomer Spark G59 with her bull calf and Gomer Pansy G56 with her heifer calf for 2,500 gns. and 2,200 gns. respectively.
