NAHL News and Updates Amarillo Bulls win

Wenatchee Wild to relocate

Ryan Cole scored twice in the National Championship game and earned MVP honors at the 2013 NAHL Robertson Cup Tournament.

The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees will begin play in the NAHL in the 2013-14 season and play their home games out of State Farm Arena.

What a difference a day makes. A day after falling to the Wenatchee Wild 7-0 in round-robin competition, the Amarillo Bulls made no such mistake on Monday in the Robertson Cup National Championship Game as they shutout the Wild 5-0 to win their first ever National title. Ryan Cole scored twice on his way to tournament MVP honors and goaltender Paul Berrafato made 16 saves for the shutout. The Bulls were the aggressor from the start of the game and determined not to have a repeat from the night before. Just over seven minutes into the game Bulls defenseman Joe Grabowski fired a shot from the point that found its way through traffic to beat Wild goaltender Robert Nichols on the power play to give Amarillo a 1-0 lead. The Bulls took a 2-0 lead as Tyler Deresky got free down the left hand side and fired a shot low to beat Nichols. The 2nd period was the Ryan Cole show as the forward scored twice to make the score 4-0 after two periods. On the first goal, Omar Mullan stole the puck at the blueline and raced in on a shorthanded 2 on 1. Mullan’s initial shot was denied by Nichols, but the rebound was collected by Cole and put into the open net. Another Wild turnover led to a 2 on 0 breakaway as TJ Sacona raced in with Cole and waited until the last minute to drop it to Cole who fired it home for a 4-0 lead. The Wild could not get any offense going in the 3rd period, recording just six shots. After a mostly defensive period Omar Mullan rounded out the scoring to make it a 5-0 final. Final shots in the game favored Amarillo, 24-16. Berrafato stopped all 16 shots, while Nichols made 19 saves. The NAHL announced the Easton All-Tournament Team following the event: Forward: Ryan Cole, Amarillo Bulls (Most Valuable Player) Forward: Stanislav Dzakhov, Bismarck Bobcats Forward: Chris Kerr, Wenatchee Wild Defense: Joe Grabowski: Amarillo Bulls Defense: Dylan Abood, Wenatchee Wild Goalie: Paul Berrafato, Amarillo Bulls ■

The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced that the Wenatchee Wild, who has been a member of the NAHL for the past five seasons, are relocating their membership to Hidalgo, Texas. The team will be known as the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and play out of the State Farm Arena beginning in the 2013-14 season. The NAHL is the oldest and largest junior hockey league in the United States, with 24 teams representing 13 states. “We are excited about the move to the Rio Grande Valley and our mission to field a championship-caliber team every season remains the same,” said team President Bill Stewart. “The area has a great hockey tradition and we believe that the region and the surrounding community will embrace and support the NAHL. We intend to keep a priority on being heavily involved in the community and know that the product we put on the ice will be entertaining and in an atmosphere that is family-friendly.” Stewart said that current Wenatchee Wild head coach Bliss Littler and his staff are expected to be part of the relocation. “We have full intentions right now to bring Coach Littler and his staff with us. They have built us into a National Championship contender and we believe that can continue with the team in the Rio Grande Valley.” “As we continue to solidify and strengthen our footprint in the South, the Rio Grande Valley and communities of Hidalgo and McAllen have established themselves as those that can fully support an NAHL team,” said Mark Frankenfeld, Commissioner of the North American Hockey League. “We are excited about the local and regional rivalries that will be enhanced by this relocation and look forward to introducing the exciting NAHL brand of hockey to the Rio Grande Valley.” The Killer Bees will play their home games out of State Farm Arena. The $20-million multi-purpose complex features a 6,800-seat arena that configures up to 5,500-seats for ice hockey, football and soccer and a center stage concert capacity of 6,800-seats. The arena also features 25 suites and 500 club seats. The property also includes 2,200 surface parking spaces on site, as well as a 2,000-square-foot lounge with access from outside of the arena, as well as 1,000-square foot bar and 300-square-foot pro shop. A presentation to and final approval by the USA Hockey junior council is expected in June. ■

Anaerobic Endurance By Luke Beltrand

E

xceptional anaerobic endurance is at the top of the list for hockey player needs. A hockey players typical shift lasts anywhere from 30- 45 seconds, players are required to play at maximum intensity for the duration of their shift and may receive only 1-2 minutes for recovery in between shifts. This short burst with maximal output followed by short rest periods defines anaerobic exercise. This predominately uses carbohydrate and creatine phosphate energy systems. When training for hockey you want to mimic these energy needs. So condoning workouts should require very intense work intervals and short rest periods. We usually utilize work to rest ratios of 1:3, 1:2, and eventually the goal is to work up to 1:1, allowing you to successfully double shift at any time. What this means is that if the athlete is “working” for 30 seconds, then they rest for 1 minute if they were following a 1:2 work to rest ratio. Running 3 miles, while great for your health and great for occasional cross training, will not give you much anaerobic improvement or improve your game. It would be

better to sprint 100 meters and then walk 100 meters for 3 miles as you would see better results to your explosive endurance. Time yourself, what is the time for your first 100 meter dash? What is your time for your last 100 meter dash? Are the times close or is your first one 3x faster than your last? If your times are close then I would say you have excellent anaerobic conditioning and you should notice that your energy levels are sustained throughout the duration of the game! The other value to explosive conditioning is that you train your “quick twitch” muscle fibers; these are the ones predominately used by anaerobic athletes and relates to the all important burst quickness, the better you get at developing them the more explosive you will be. When doing long endurance training you are developing slow twitch muscle fibers which you will not use very often in the game of hockey. I hope you find this useful, if you would like more specific information on anaerobic conditioning please contact us as info@crullfitness.com! ■

Players to Watch WHL Bantam Draft

F Sam Shrout: Shattuck St. Mary’s U14 ’12-’13 Season Stats: 59 GP 13-37-50 18 PIM From SSM U14 Head Coach John Lafontaine: He’s seen massive improvements in his passing and playmaking in his first season with Shattuck St. Mary’s as he is slowly improving getting plays to open players. He needs to read the opposing defense. Even though he is mostly interested in the NCAA, he said that he would possibly consider a move to the Western Hockey League is the chance could come up. So he could go either way. F: Hank Crone: Dallas Stars Elites U14AAA ’12-’13 Super Series Stats: 19 GP 18-14-32 6 PIM ’13 TAHA State Tournament: 2 GP 0-1-1 4 PIM ’13 USA Hockey RMD Tournament: 4 GP 5-5-10 2 PIM Hockey Prospect Scouting Report: Crone has displayed the sweetest hands a 14 year old could possibly possess. His offensive game is world class for his age, and teams will surely covet of skill when the WHL Bantam Draft comes along. D: Max Gildon: Dallas Stars Elites U14AAA ’12-’13 Season Stats: 23 GP 4-11-15 8 PIM ’12-’13 Season Stats: 19 GP 3-8-11 2 PIM ’13 TAHA State Tournament: 1 GP 0-0-0 0 PIM ’13 USA Hockey RMD Tournament: 4 GP 1-3-4 6 PIM Hockey Prospect Scouting Report: Gildon is a smooth puck moving defensemen who is by far the best defender for the Stars Elites this season. He is able to play in both ends of the ice effectively and give opponents a tough time whatever they are trying to stop him from rushing the puck, or trying to get away from him in the defensive zone. He needs to improve his defense in the open ice. If he can do that, he could possibly make himself a bonefied Pro Prospect in the future. ■
