FUTURE PLANS by Lindsey R. Sablowski

This submission is from the blog tour of The Pack-Retribution; by Lm Preston.

I think a lot of us wonder about the future. The future is an interesting thing to think about because after all it is unwritten and changes constantly. I don’t want to talk about too far ahead in the future because I just can’t wrap my head around that thought, but instead I’ll talk about a coming future. Where do I see myself in five years? Five years from now I’d like to be finished with college, have my Bachelor’s, and be starting a family of my own. I’ve always dreamed of getting married someday, and I’m still hoping for that special guy to be out there somewhere for me. Hopefully five years from now we’ll have found each other. I’m a firm believer in love and hope… and it would be a dream come true to finally settle down. As for my writing career, I have no idea if Cursed With Power will take off. However, I do know for a fact that I will

still be writing. Five years from now I might actually be done with the Magicians series, and if that’s the case I’d love to start writing something new. My current interest would be historical fiction or perhaps an entirely fictional book (with no history in it at all), but years from now I might change my mind on that. If I’m still writing the series, I really hope that readers are enjoying it.

OWLET This looks like a great novel being released in midOctober. Be sure to check it out!

Page 2

And who knows… maybe writing will be my full-time job. If not, though, I hope I’m teaching or editing (yeah I know, editing sounds crazy, but I like to do it) because writing isn’t something I want to keep all to myself… it’s something that should be shared in the world, and I would love nothing more than to share my journey with others and help them reach their dreams. _____________________

BURNING BRIDGES A new book by Nadege Richards! I really love the cover. Would you be interested in an excerpt?

EMMA MICHAELS TALKS “MEAN” by EMMA MICHAELS

This submission is from the blog tour of The Pack-Retribution; by Lm Preston. Guest Post by Emma Michaels “The meanest character…”

In the ‘Society of Feathers’ series there is a character named Caleb. The first novel Owlet is being released October 13th and you see a bit of the fall out for things he has done in his lifetime but in the second book Eyrie, you really realize just how cruel a man he is and how he became that way. I would definitely say he is the meanest character I have written up to date but I also believe in creating realistic characters, so there is a reason behind all he does and there is a story to how he became the way he is. He isn’t simply evil, he is a man with a goal and he will do anything he needs to in order to reach that goal, no matter what the sacrifice. The way that Caleb is mean is more of a cruelty fueled by his own twisted curiosity. He has a need to know how everything works and he doesn’t mind destroying something to see how it was put together and what made it tick. In Owlet we meet people

whose lives have been affected by him, but not him just yet. In Eyrie you get to dive a bit deeper and not only hear about him but see it for yourself. He is one of the leaders of the Eyrie, which works as a sort of council, creating laws and upholding them for the safety of all those involved. On the opposite side of the spectrum is Nathaniel, another Eyrie member who is in many ways, Caleb’s truest enemy. Not because he wants to fight Caleb but because Nathaniel stands for everything that stands between Caleb and his end goals. Owlet will be coming out this October 13th! Stop by www.EmmaMichaels.com to find out more about Caleb and Nathaniel and the young girl caught in the middle of something she never could have seen coming!

BRYNA BUTLER

When You’re Not Writing What Do You Do?

This submission is from the blog tour of The Pack-Retribution; by Lm Preston.

I’m so excited about Shadows Rising. I think it’s the best in the series so far. Keira Ryan’s story continues as she learns more about the prophecy that stands between her and the fall of an ancient evil that is trying to bust through to our world. The shadow creatures, mentioned in Of Sun & Moon, Book 1, make their true debut in Shadows Rising. Here’s the teaser trailer. I plan to wrap the series by the end of 2013 with a total of six books in all. With Book 4 near release, I feel like I’m saying goodbye already. *sniff, sniff* But with every closed door, there’s a kitchen window that we completely forgot to shut when we finished with the dishes. My kitchen window is the Ice Wolves Trilogy. I’m currently researching and pre-writing this new project about feuding werewolf packs and the girl that walks the line between them. Set in the small Alaskan town of Eagle River, these novels are sure to be epic. Look for the first one, tentatively titled Werewolf Biology to hit stores in late 2013.

LARK’S END Thanks to Omaik Digital Art, Lark’s End and the blog dedicated to the series is illustrated for readers! He worked over two years on the project and I want to give him a special shout out! You can learn more about him here.

WAR PIG FOREST UPCOMING SHOW SET UP A SHOW REMINDER! On October 29, 2012 author CATALINA EGAN will discuss with us her journey into the discovery of her father’s untimely death…

-LM PRESTON I find the most inventive places to write. I write on my porch, in my car while on long trips, at my kids sports practices, on little pieces of paper – almost anywhere I can sneak it in.

But when I’m not writing, I’m just as busy. I do in person tours from April-October. I go to Balticon, Comic Con, Faerie Con, Writer’s Conferences, Book Festivals, Middle and High Schools, Libraries, books signings and other events. I also belong to a Critique group, am Vice President of Mid Atlantic Book Publishing Association and Recruiter for Editors & Lit Agents for the Maryland Writer’s Association. And if that doesn’t make you think I’m completely insane, I’m a wife and mom four who’s team mom, who takes my daughter to open mic, who goes to my son’s lacrosse games, who’s a movie addict that goes to the movies every Friday, a sufferer of Wanderlust who escapes on a minivacation every couple of months.

Welcome to the end and the beginning. Christina Leigh Pritchard surprises with a surreal journey into her YA fantasy series, The Fall of Gadaie.

REVIEW FROM SPECULATIVE SALON As a well-read adult I have to admit that there are certain genres I have avoided. OK I did watch Un Chien Andalou, (warning: the link is to the actual film and is not for the squeamish) the classic surreal short film from the '20s. It was directed by Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali and is definitely NOT a YA film. Lark's End, however, is tempting me to

investigate the literary world of that film and the movement that inspired it. The world of Lark's End is topsyturvy. How else do you describe falling up from your roller-coaster seat down into a trap door that you climb up out of ? I admit that I was prepared to be confused and disappointed when I started reading this story. Shifts of location left me feeling lost and for a YA book the language seemed too simplistic. After the first couple of chapters I was comfortable feeling lost. And very grateful for the language. By the middle of the book I was

WHEN COPPER SUNS FALL… by KASONNDRA LEIGH

the future, I’m hunted like an animal by the humans. And targeted by our enemies, the Tainted. I guess the answer could be violence, too. That really hasn’t changed much over time. **he sighs deeply, lowers his head, and stays quiet** Author website: http://www.kasonndraleigh.com

The Lost Immortals Book One: When Copper Suns Fall

What’s the strangest thing you’ve seen here so far? Why?

By KaSonndra Leigh

Everything about this world seems strange since the last time I was here. In my world, you get used to seeing dark stuff everywhere. Black waters, black beaches, gray skies. **I wonder what he means, but I’ve learned to be patient with him.** I’ve been here before, you know. How is that possible? I can hear your thoughts so easily. **He smiles, a drop-down-dead-gorgeous smile with one dimple on the left cheek. My cheeks are probably blushing tomato red** You’ll have to read about my story to see how I got here. And your outdated cellereaders crack me up. **He means my cell phone lying on the desk beside us. He’s giving it a look of pure pity. I tell him this is the 4G version of the latest Droid. And I’m kinda mad because I used six months’ worth of my wages to buy it.** The screen doesn’t have enough pixels. You can’t even read thumb imprints with that thing. Anybody could steal it and use it. **again, he has a point. Sigh sigh**

Faris Toulan Interview The interview works like this: I’m inviting Faris to the present (2012).

Can you introduce yourself to us? Name’s Faris. Faris Toulan. I’m a Caducean, a demon slayer. There isn’t really much else to say. **Glances at me with a set of intense gray eyes that shimmer inside the irises. I wonder if they’re really gray, or could they be silver** People around you might not understand why my skills are necessary in this day and time, but they will. You’ll be glad you had this interview with me. In what way are you connected to Chela? Hmm. **massages the back of his neck as he thinks about this** Our connection is, well…difficult to explain. You see, if I tell you about it, then you’d be at risk. **I’m dying to know what he means. Before I can say anything, he continues.** That means I’d have to take a part of your memories. I can do that, you know. **I suck my breath. Did he just read my mind?** I’ll do anything to protect Chela. Our connection is beyond words. What can you say about your life? I told you, there isn’t really much I can say. But I will tell you to be happy with what you’ve got today. Your blue skies, clean air. **he glances toward the window beside us, staring at it a long moment** Are those birds outside? 55 years in the future, that would be in this world after the Tidal Years, there are no birds. They’re gone. Poof. Vanished. You have robots. Big, black, ugly crows with cameras for eyes. They’re looking for me. Or rather, people like me. I’m an outcast according to the new leaders. They blame the Caduceans for what happened in the past: wars, earthquakes, hurricanes. **A distant look clouds his eyes. I want to know what they’re seeing** What do you think of the present world? (2012) You’re lucky. Very lucky. See my last answer if you need proof of that.

QUEEN MARYANNE

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve seen here? Why? As I said, I’ve been here before. But I don’t remember hearing so much laughter. What surprises me is all the happy-smiley people you have here. In the future, smiles are an endangered species. Enjoy them while they last.

MYSTERIOUS GARDEN

If you had a chance to choose between living in our world and in yours, which one would you choose? Why? The Mirrorlands, that’s what we call your world, and it can’t touch mine. Ours is older than yours. I don’t mean to sound conceited. But it’s true. My world Bardonia is on the other side of the doorway. It’s parallel to this world. The skies are clear. The waters are sapphire blue and jade green in some places. There’s even this island where the waterfalls flow toward the sky. No pollution. No disease from contaminated waters. So tell me. Which one would you choose? **Does he even need to ask?** Can you name one thing, event or custom that reminds you of your world? Bonding. That type of connection Chela has with me, it’s the same way at home. But the thing is I’m not at home. I can’t go back to Bardonia. I’m exiled, cursed to live in the mirrorlands. And not a pretty little place like your 2012 world. In

BOOK RAMBLINGS MY HERO IS MY MONSTER

A REVIEW BY CHRISTINA LEIGH PRITCHARD Author: JUNE SPEARS Publish Date: June 2012 It makes you wonder how someone who is supposed to love you can take such advantage of you. June Spears depicts her life of horrific abuse without constraint, pulling the reader into her nightmare. What a scare it had to be to have a father and mother who put their own needs ahead of their child's. I'm happy she escaped, but understand that no matter how much a person grows, or how many of their past demons they attempt to remove, it's like a fence full of nails. You can take the nails out but the holes are still there. This is what makes this story so compelling, to see how one person suffers and yet fights to move on, even after the 'war' she had to live through is over. (Images of war never leaves the mind of its fighters or victims--not even in the household.)Thank you, June Spears, for sharing your story with us.

THE BR BUBBLE BOY "Bubble Boy" is a comedy about a young man who was born without an immune system and has lived his life within a plastic bubble in his bedroom. When he finds out that the woman he has loved since childhood is about to be married at Niagara Falls, he builds a portable bubble suit and ventures into the outside world to win her affections. CATALINA EGAN Catalina Egan, author of BRIDGE OF DEATHS, lives in South Florida. She is fluent in four languages; English, Spanish, French and Swedish. From a young age, she became determined to solve the 'mystery' of her grandfather's death. Egan has researched this story for almost two decades. (The story has taken her to Denmark, England…) M.V.C. EGAN will be a guest on A HOME FOR THE CREATIVE October 29, 2012! Until then, check out the article she submitted for us.

RAISING A CHILD WITH FOOD ALLERGIES By M.C.V. Egan As the parent of a child with severe food allergies it is often complicated to explain that what is nutritious and healthy for other children, is scary and Photo from BUBBLE BOY the movie

life-threatening for mine. An added difficulty is that food; whether making it, talking about it or consuming it has always been an enormous part of my life. I was undoubtedly a foodie before it was a popular and mainstream term. “…the horrible and scary moment; an emergency visit to a hospital…” –

Catalina Egan As a foodie while pregnant I found numerous recipes for the perfect Mac and Cheese, the healthiest and most amazing cookies, the best yogurt smoothie and how to make my own nut butters. Happily planning to in great detail the wonderful meals I would share and enjoy with my child. As the best laid plans of mice and men that often go astray, so went my planned meals and the type of carefree parent I had always visualized I would be.

CONTINUED… Austin was born beautiful and given a 9 Agpar score, handed to me perfectly wrapped in a blanket with the reassuring statement “The only reason he did not get a 10 was because the bottom of his feet are a little purple”. Thrilled with my amazing baby I left the hospital ready to follow my carefully laid plans. I breastfed and the first sign that something was wrong came in the form of Eczema. All the literature on Eczema explained that as a breast feeding mother I needed to

When I tried to introduce new foods there seemed to be something very wrong, so I was very careful. Eventually the horrible and scary moment; an emergency visit to a hospital that made us aware we were dealing with a life threatening issue came when he was 11 months old.

From Kindergarten to about 4th grade I simply volunteered at my son’s school every day at lunch time.

Our son was born allergic to Dairy, Eggs and most Tree Nuts. This includes all ice cream, sherbet, yogurt and cheeses, anything with eggs in it and very often these ingredients are well hidden with names such as Whey, Casein for dairy and Albumin for eggs. I visited parks with a large container of wipes and wiped slides, monkey bars and anything other children that ate pizza had touched. I felt foolish at times; a crazy parent who exaggerated and of course the days I decided to take a chance, I had to unfortunately learn the hard way that it was indeed a severe problem. The scariest part was that every reaction can be more severe than the previous one and that pushes a

Austin is now 14 and his allergies are far less severe; although still considered of anaphylactic level. He has developed a great sense of responsibility and awareness. MY TYPE… An article by Donnette Smith, author of CUNJA

If anyone asked what kind of writer I am, my answer to that would be, well…I’m the kind of writer who thinks sinister thoughts. Now I don’t mean that as in I’m an axe-wielding lunatic on the prowl for my next victim…but the villain in one of my stories is quite likely to be. The fun in that is…ya never know what’s gonna happen. If I can terrify, astound and shock my readers, then I’m doing what I love most. The element of surprise is where I live. What kind of unexpected twists could my mind conjure? If someone said I watch far too many episodes of CSI, they’d be right. I’m completely fascinated by crime scene investigations and forensic science. These things have a big influence on the kind of stories I write. I’m also a big sucker for romance. You know, boy meets girl…they fall in love and all is well in the world again. Yeah, I know, unexpected for me. But I can’t help it, that kind of

connection between two people is such a powerful thing. It’s certainly worth writing about. So, how did I come upon mixing horror with romance? Could be a combination of all those Dean Koontz and Sandra Brown novels I’ve read. Although I love them all, that’s not it. I can only say it comes natural to me. These are the kind of stories my heart urges me to write. I’m absolutely a ‘happy ending’ author. And not the kind you’re likely to find writing a sequel (although I think that’s awesome). But for me there are just too many different stories I have the desire to tell, and I probably won’t live long enough to tell them all. So now that I’ve explained how my twisted mind works, I would love to know what kind of terrifying thoughts everyone else has. After all, it is the month of Halloween, right? That’s why I’m doing a twobook giveaway for the person

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Donnette was born in Florida, but she has lived in the Lone Star state so long she claims to be a true Texan. She worked as a journalist for a local newspaper covering top stories such as elections, and homicide. It was then the desire to write novels took hold and wouldn’t let go. Listen to songs from Carl Grimes on Facebook! Would you like to sample a few songs by Carl Grimes? Be sure to check out his songs via his Facebook page.

GRIMES MUSICAL TALENT

SAMPLE LYRICS GRANDEST DREAM

To someday play the Opry Has been my grandest dream To stand upon the fairest stage Where legends used to sing Their songs of love & broken hearts Times in which we lived Blessed be their memory For all they had to give I’d turn on my radio Listen every night Somewhere in my darkness They turn on a light I’ve always been a dreamer & I guess my grandest dream is someday play the Opry Down in Nashville Tennessee

CARL GRIMES I started playing the guitar when I was about 9. Both my Mother & Father played a little and they taught me enough to get me started. I have loved music from as early as I can remember. My Mother said that as a child I would sit in front of the radio and listen for hours on end to what ever was on. I can remember listening to such greats as Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis, Jerry Lee, Carl Perkins, Fat’s Domino the Platters and many more

SPOKEN Then all of a sudden there he was as he stepped out into the light & behind him appeared all the faces of all the stars that night & when the curtain opened and the lights went down & they turned the spot light on Mr. Roy Acuff said come here son it’s time to sing your song I dreamed a dream came true for me I felt the tear drops fall….

just to name a few. Later on in my teenage years I joined bands that would play for parties or shopping malls, but most often in the garage of a friend. I was about 18 when I began playing in bars & lounges while working a day job in order to survive. I began writing songs at about this same time and over the years I have written many songs about my experiences and the people I have met or made friends with. I have been playing now for some 50+ years with 30 or more of them spent playing in bar’s and lounges all over California. About 12+ years ago I stopped playing publicly and put together a small project-recording studio at home in order to record and preserve the music that I had written. I feel very lucky and I thank God every day for giving me this gift.

It’s never too late to do something you love. This is the lesson I’ve been learning at thirty-two. I’ve written the start of so many books and given up it’s kind of ridiculous. I always said, “When I write my first book”. It wasn’t until I was twentyeight years old that I finally screamed at myself internally and said, “Shut up and stop whining about when and do it already”. When my youngest daughter was born ten weeks premature I finally took the opportunity while sitting next to her incubator to start living my dream. I wrote the first fifty pages of Gifted by hand while sitting in her NICU room. Like every other story I had started, Gifted was doomed to sit untouched and unfinished. My biggest problem writing was that I didn’t let anyone read my work. I wrote because I enjoyed it and I wanted to get the characters out of my head. Eventually two ladies I worked with convinced me to let them read what I had finished. I broke down and nervously handed over those first fifty pages.

I will always owe those two women for loving what I had written and encouraging me to continue on with Morgan’s story. So after a year, I worked overtime and finished Gifted within three months. I don’t know if I would have stayed on task had it not been for them cheering me on.

Now I’m about to release Gifted and I can’t help but wonder about all those stories I didn’t write. I hear people say, “I always wanted to paint” or “I wish I would’ve been a photographer” and I say, “Why not” or “What are you waiting for”. Don’t wait for the perfect

MOVE RIGHT by CAROLEE JOHNSON

RECRUITING

MOVE RIGHT When I moved I went to Kinko's and bought 20 sheets of red, blue, green and yellow paper etc each, from their Copy Center. You can also get colored paper from the Copy Centers at Staples and Office Depot. I colored coded each room and it made my move a lot easier. I chose yellow for the kitchen. I wrote KITCHEN on one piece of yellow paper and taped it to a kitchen cabinet. Then, each box I packed for the kitchen, I wrote the contents

on a piece of yellow paper then taped it to the box. When we got to our new house in my new kitchen, I taped a piece of yellow paper to a cabinet. All boxes with a piece of yellow paper were stacked in the kitchen and I could easily see the lists of contents. It made unpacking a lot easier and I didn't worry about other boxes from other rooms being there. Each room had a color and on moving day, all boxes were placed in the correct rooms. SHAME by Christina Leigh Pritchard

An excerpt from a novel that will be released this month!

1. The Walk of Shame I took a deep breath. The checkered floors were blue and cream. Scuff marks showed more on the cream tiles. It’s funny what you notice sometimes. I shouldn’t be looking at the floor. I should be going to class. But, who could face them after what I did? “Sell out.” I ignored it. “Loser!” Still not going to respond… “Watch your back, Clari Hawk.” Heather slammed into my shoulder. I stumbled backwards. Everyone—that used to be my friend—giggled. They dropped poppers at my feet. I recoiled, banging into a metal locker. More laugher… Heather turned and glared at me. “Bang, bang, Clari.” She threw a popper on the ground. I jumped. “Loser,” she grinned. Her eyes flickered. I followed them. Jeff stood at my locker. My face burned. I couldn’t swallow. Heather clapped her hands, motioning for everyone to follow. “I think it’s time for the greatest break up ever.” Her words cut. “It’s about time, don’t you think Clari?” I couldn’t look up. My eyes blurred. Everyone stamped their feet and pounded the lockers. It was deafening. Until yesterday, Heather had been my best friend. Though, I don’t know why exactly. She wasn’t anything like me. Her hair was blond, her eyes hazel and she even had a beauty mark on her face like Marilyn Monroe. All the guys loved her and she was the head cheerleader. I was olive complexioned with brown hair and I would rather spend my day searching for awesome indie bands and books than be caught dead with school spirit. Still, she didn’t do anything wrong—I had. “Hi Heather,” I forced a smile. She turned her back. “Don’t dare speak to me,” She snapped, disappearing into the bathroom. I wanted to how sorry I was—but, there was someone else in my life that I still had to lose.

Jeff frowned. His fingers held my lock tightly. Did he want to pelt me across the head with it? I used to love school—especially first period. That’s where I usually spent my days with Jeff. Since the second grade—I loved him. It started after he stuck up for me when my twin brother Max tossed dirt in my face at the playground. Jeff had soft brown eyes and a bowl cut back then. Now, his deep brown eyes bore through me and his hair was long and tied back. He loved to surf and skateboard. I was supposed to see him compete this weekend but—that’s probably not going to happen now… This was it; the end of us. At least he’d been mine all this time. I couldn’t really complain, right? How many school romances lasted till their senior year? What seventeen year old could say, hey I got to spend my life with the same best friend and the same guy. How could he still give me butterflies after all these years? “Are you breaking up with me?” I blurted. My heart pounded and my knees trembled. He just leaned against the metal with his fingers frozen around my lock. “Jeff,” I mumbled, holding back the tears, “please, you have to believe me—” “You don’t get to cry!” He shouted. People glared, shaking their heads at me. “You,” his eyes watered, “you don’t get to cry. I do.” “Jeff!” I could barely say. He stormed down the hall punching the lockers with his fist. Doors flew open and he shoved someone out of his way. He stomped up the steps and threw his book bag on the ground. I ran over to the stairwell, picking it up. I cradled it as if it were him. I couldn’t swallow. “Don’t touch my bag!” Jeff leaned over the railing. “Get away from my stuff and stay away from me!” “While you’re at it, why don’t you move schools too?” Heather stood beside me. “Give me that. We don’t need you touching anything of ours ever again.” She snatched Jeff’s bag and put it on her back. “Think about moving, Clari. I’d really like it if you would get as far away from me as possible.” I fell to my knees. “You don’t mean that,” I held back my tears, “You’re just mad at me right now.

You’ll see.” “I HATE YOU!” She screamed. Her face burned red. “Go away Clari, please just leave.” I stood, barely able to. I glanced at the fire exit. “Yeah, go for it.” Heather turned away from me, “and don’t come back.” I slammed my body against the exit doors with all my might. The alarm filled the halls. I just ran, never looking back. It wouldn’t be the first time I skipped school—but it would be my last. I didn’t need to graduate or go to college. Max would never get to go with me now. That was my fault too, I guess. Was anything these days not because of me? “Clarissa Anne Hawk!” My mother shouted. She stood on our porch with her hands pressed against her hips. “What are you doing?” “I can’t be in that school right now.” My lip trembled, “Mom, it’s horrible. Heather and Jeff—” “It’s what happens when you destroy lives out of boredom.” My mother snapped. She motioned for me to go inside. I stood my ground. “Get inside—now.” “You don’t get to tell me what to do anymore.” I resisted. “Then find somewhere else to live. In fact, you’ll be eighteen in two months why not do me a favor and leave early so I don’t have to kick you out?” “You wouldn’t want to look bad in front of the neighbors?” I acted stunned, “What would they say?” She shot me a narrowed glare, “There’s nothing you haven’t done that could ever make me look bad.” “I’m quitting school.” I told her. “What’s the difference?” Her eyes watered, “You’re headed down a very dark path.” She unlocked her car, “How could you do this, Clari? You’ve destroyed our family.” “Mom,” I sobbed into my arm. “Mom, mom, mom,” I cried, folding myself into a ball. I just lay there in the dirt. Her tires crunched dead leaves. Did she even look back at me? Was she going to run me over? Would she

“Writer and singer.” STRING BRIDGE

-Jessica Bell

What Influences You? Today I’m not only going to talk about how music influenced the creation of my debut novel, String Bridge. I’m also going to talk about how String Bridge influenced the creation of its own soundtrack, Melody Hill: On the Other Side.

The Music

Melody, the main character in the novel, is a musician, who struggles to revive her passion

to pursue a career in music after the role of mother and wife stunted its growth. The songs that appear in the book started off as poems. But then I thought, wouldn’t it make more sense for them to be song lyrics? And so, I converted the poems into lyrics. Then it occurred to me that I could create and produce an album conceptually written by Melody. Being a singer/songwriter/guitarist myself, and having written and recorded countless songs over the years, meant it was a task that I could definitely undertake. But I became even more convinced of the idea after listening to one of my mother’s songs on YouTube, which conveniently portrayed my main character’s mindset. Now, I was more than inspired. I eventually rerecorded this song with my own voice for my book trailer. It’s also in the album. (Thank you to my mother, Erika Bach, once again, for allowing me to do this!) Once I finished the final revisions to String Bridge, I sat down with my guitar and wrote music to the four songs that appear in the book by channelling Melody’s musical influences (PJ Harvey, Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Joni Mitchell, Nightmares on Wax, Enigma) and

A HOME FOR THE CREATIVE

combining their styles of rock, pop, folk, and ambience to create an atmospheric grunge CD that is also a visceral lyrical story. Once those were done, I wrote five more songs in the same vein to complete the album, and had the album professionally recorded and produced. You can hear samples on Bandcamp. The Writing

I’m often asked whether being a musician benefits my writing. And I have to say yes. For one, I think sound is a very difficult thing to describe. And even for me, it is not easy. I spent a long time trying to perfect the parts of the novel where music is illustrated. I didn’t only want the words to describe music; I wanted them to sound like music. Being a poet also, I adore playing around with different words and sounds and hearing how they roll off my tongue like a velvety tune. I thrive on constructing sentences with cadence. It’s like singing without a melody— writing to a tempo. That being said, writing also benefits my songwriting. Over the past seven or so years, since actively writing novels, I’ve noticed a huge change in the way I approach writing lyrics. So I suppose both skills feed off each other. I can’t imagine my life without either of them. And do you want to know something funny? I need silence when I write. If there is music playing, all I want to do is sing.

Biography

If Jessica Bell could choose only one creative mentor, she'd give the role to Euterpe, the Greek muse of music and lyrics. This is not only because she currently resides in Athens, Greece, but because of her life as a thirtysomething Australian-native contemporary fiction author, poet, and singer/songwriter/guitarist, whose literary inspiration often stems from songs she's written. Jessica is the Co-Publishing Editor of Vine Leaves Literary Journal and runs the Homeric Writers' Retreat & Workshop on the Greek island of Ithaca with Chuck Sambuchino of Writer's Digest. Get to Know Jilda Leigh ABOUT Shadows, Skeletons and a Southern Belle takes the reader on a journey from the pits of despair to the light. Author Jilda Leigh has woven a tale that deals with bipolar depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, suicide attempts, and “PTSD”. The author takes us on the journey through the rise and fall of depression, and then to the heights of her quest to learn as much as she can about mental illnesses. From traditional medicine, Zen Buddism and Christianity, Author Jilda Leigh leans how to cope with the strains and stress of her illnesses in a positive way. The author gives insightful information to help anyone dealing with depression, hard times, or sorrow with dignity and positive thoughts.

Tell us about your book. Which one? Haa, just kidding. Shadows, Skeletons and a Southern Belle is my life story. The “bare bones” me I really didn't want anyone else to see. Voices of the Past was about my struggle with auditory hallucinations and how they can drive you nuts. The children's books were actually written with my grandchildren in mind. They are fashioned straight out of real life. What inspires you to write? Oh broccoli!! What doesn't inspire me would be a better question. I write everywhere, and anywhere. I scribble notes on everything from my laptop to paper napkins in restaurants. I have to write it down when the thought hits me. What genres do you write? Do you really wanna play the genre card? Just kidding. I typically write only children's books these days. I save all my other depressing stuff for my journal. Shadows, Skeletons and a Southern Belle was something that I felt compelled and driven to write and get out of me.

“What doesn’t inspire me?” – Jilda Leigh How long have you been writing? As long as I can remember. I have written in some form as long as I can remember. I always loved English in school, and loved writing papers. Then, it was journaling. Now, I'm trying to make a go of writing books.

Shadows, Skeletons and a Southern Belle by Jilda Leigh, a self-help novel based on her own struggles.

Art and Fractals - by darknightoftroy Often art is thought of in very traditional categories. Painting, music, literature, dance, sculpting and perhaps a few other mediums are what come to mind when somebody says they are an artist. However, what is art really? A very wide view is that art is ‘anything that is created through self-expression,’ but personally I prefer to think of art as ‘creative works that are able to convey feeling to those observing them.’ I am an artist who works in a somewhat unusual medium, but one that is growing in popularity. I make fractal art. What is a fractal? This is a question that I’m frequently asked, and there is a technical drawn-out mathematical answer, or a discussion about elements compounding upon themselves and each other, but rather than boring you I’d rather just show you. This image was created by me while using a program called Apophysis. Anyone can download and use this software for free, and while it takes some getting used to, it is a very powerful tool. Fractal art, by its nature of being mathematically derived, tends to be fairly abstract. Not everyone appreciates abstract art. The feelings it conveys are more subtle, less apparent. Abstract art puts something before you that you have no experience with, that has no inherent meaning, but forces the viewer to search within the piece for patterns, and within themselves for what those patterns mean. As with any kind of art, design and creation of fractals can take multiple roads. Sometimes an artist has a stroke of inspiration and has an idea for a piece fully formed, and then works until they’ve created their art exactly as it was in their head. More often for me at least, I don’t necessarily set out with a very clear idea of what I want to create. I have a feeling that I wish to express, and I try different approaches on how to portray it. Many of them fail dismally, but eventually you find something that sticks, something that resonates with you, a core foundation to build the rest of the piece on. This foundation can be a combination of many elements, but it has to fit together into a message. After you’ve found ‘the core’ everything else just becomes a matter of technique. What details do you want to add, which elements should you emphasize or de-emphasize, and what can you change to heighten the desired effect? I think this is all part of the creative process that artists in every medium go through. Maybe all of this is to say that I make pretty make brings me great joy, bring joy to others as well.
