N

ormally Airport Boulevard and Highway 152 handle the cars and farm trucks pretty well. But those who routinely travel some portion of Airport to Holohan to Hwy 152 and on to the Fair know what “Traffic Jam” means. The second week of September is guaranteed to produce long lines making the trek to our annual celebration. Before you head to this year’s fair grab the attached map and use it to find a road less traveled. It isn’t necessarily shorter in distance but may be quicker in time. At the very least following roads with names like Casserly and Carlton will certainly take you through some beautiful country. Let there be no doubt, the 2015 Santa Cruz County Fair is worth the trip and this year you can navigate the back roads like a local.

Board President’s Message WELCOME TO THE 2015 SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FAIR! We have a wonderful week of entertainment, food and fun planned this year. I am confident there is something for everyone here at the Fair to enjoy. From local and headline entertainment to a wide variety of fair food, to the local handcrafted entries there is fun and enjoyment around every corner. I consider the Santa Cruz County Fair a showcase of the diverse talents of our community. All this is made possible by the year round work of our small and dedicated staff and many hundreds of talented volunteers. This year has been a very busy with many improvements to the grounds and supporting infrastructure. If you are here at the Fair, have a wonderful time and comeback again later this week. If you are contemplating coming to the Fair there is no time like the present. Sincerely,

DON DIETRICH

Fair Manager’s Message Photo: Ron Haedicke

DAvID kEGEBEIN I was going to start my annual note to you all by trying to list the repairs, upgrades and improvements here at the grounds since last year’s Fair.

But I quickly started thinking about the number of dedicated volunteers and staff who are working so hard to maintain and improve this amazing community resource and treasure. All I can say is a humble “Thank you.” Now, on to the Fair! Our annual signature event will run Wednesday, September 16 through Sunday, September 20. Volunteers are creating many new displays and exhibits tied to this year’s theme, “Country Nights and Carnival Lights.” New for the kids is Twinkle Time, a high energy get up and move stage show. You’ll find Master Hypnotist Michael Mezmer of course, and new favorites Captain Jack Spareribs and the Turkey Stampede. I am also excited to announce that Wednesday night is the premiere of Monster Trucks and Motorcycles in the Race Track, and this year as part of our entertainment package it is a free show. What we started in 2013 as a little experiment turned into a big hit so

again this year we will have Valet Parking available for $20 during the entire Fair. Drive into the marked lane behind the Heritage Hall and our volunteers will guide you. With Valet service you will have an opportunity to purchase fair admissions or redeem your passes at a special entrance between the Heritage Hall and the Floriculture Building. Not only is it convenient but part of your fee helps fund local nonprofit organizations. I hope you will come out and help me thank the many creative volunteers and employees of the Santa Cruz County Fair. And while you’re here try out some of our new food items such as Indian Fry Bread, monster jalapeno corn dogs and the new Funnel Cake stand. We have also expanded our carnival lot and added new rides. Actually, like I said last year, when you are at the Fair it is almost impossible not to have a whole lot fun!

THANK YOU, BRUCE!

FRANk “BRUcE” ONETO (1923 - 2015) BRUCE ONETO of Boulder Creek, California, 91, died Tuesday June 30, 2015 from congestive heart failure at Dominican Hospital, Santa Cruz, CA. Bruce was born in Madera on December 23, 1923, the son of Frank and Caralou Oneto. He was raised in Madera, Sebastopol, San Francisco, and Fresno, California. Bruce graduated in 1941 from Fresno High. Bruce then served as a corporal in the Army during World War II stationed in the Pacific with 593rd Joint Assault Signal Company (JASCO). He received four battle stars for his service on the islands of Leyte, Luzon, and Okinawa, and received a presidential unit citation and was honorably discharged in 1945. Returning to civilian life Bruce then attended college at Stanford and Santa Clara Universities receiving a law degree from Santa Clara in 1956. As a lawyer, Bruce became a partner at the Ruffo Law firm in San Jose, California. Bruce next began his own practice in San Jose and Brookdale, California. In 1974 Bruce retired from the law, became an employee and manager of Park Mutual Water Company in Boulder Creek, California, and began his lifelong advocacy of sustainable water policy. Bruce became involved in a wide range of organizations to further his passion for sensible and sustainable management of our natural resources, including the Water Advisory Commission for State of California and Santa Cruz County, and the Watershed Institute Advisor for San Lorenzo Valley High District. In addition, Bruce held the position of Fair Director for the 14th district Santa Cruz County Fair from 2001, a position appointed by governors Davis, Schwarzenegger, and Brown. In his later years, Bruce dedicated himself to promoting the principles of sustainable agriculture and became a member of the Watsonville Ag History Project and the Santa Cruz County Fair Heritage Foundation. He and his wife Jeri would frequently promote and contribute to fundraising events, graciously offering their abundant talent at preparing home cooked meals, prepared with dedication and lots of love. Bruce and his wife Jeri were recipients of the 2013 HammerMarcum award honoring those residents of San Lorenzo Valley who have given hundreds of hours of volunteer time to improve the quality of life of local residents. Bruce was a member in the following organizations: San Lorenzo Valley Museum, Valley Women’s Club, and Sons in Retirement. His interests and hobbies included golf, bowling, and woodworking. Bruce loved to teach his family and friends how to prepare homemade ravioli, which he learned from his grandmother Nona. And Bruce would often provide demonstrations in how to prepare ravioli at the Santa Cruz County Fair. Bruce was also a volunteer groundskeeper for his grandson’s little league team. He did this because he wanted to be sure the kids had a safe field to play on. He kept the field up for four generations of little leaguers. Bruce liked to work with

his hands and was very proud of the work he did to remodel his home, using reclaimed wood from redwood water tanks. He was proud of his military service and was active in Veteran’s Day celebrations and in veteran’s organizations. Above all else Bruce embraced the importance of family and the joy that he received from his wife Jeri and their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. To him, they were the bread of life. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Jeri (Green) Oneto, and sisters Jane (Chuck Irwin) and Marilou Ellis, daughter Laura Hamill, sons Michael Oneto (Lisa) and Robert Oneto (Karen), step-daughter Jackie Jones (Mike), grandchildren Tim Jones (Amber), Suzie (Jake Palmer), Roy, Simone, Brook and Mikaela Oneto, and five great grandchildren: Colton, Kyla, Kendall Jones, and Landen and Grady Palmer. Bruce was preceded in death by stepson Jeff Green. When Bruce Oneto passed away, not only were his immediate family, friends, and the community of Boulder Creek saddened, his Fair family mourned a deep loss. Whether as a member of the Fair Board of Directors or out painting benches, pulling weeds, and planting flowers with his wife, Jeri, Bruce was always around helping. No doubt the Fair will miss his tireless efforts but perhaps he will be missed just a little more in Home Arts. No one made raviolis like Bruce. Donations can be made to the Boulder Creek Fire District, the Ag History Project, or JDRF. Thank you, Bruce Oneto, thank you for everything.

motorcycles

t’s new, it’s exciting, it’s a free show, and it kicks off the 2015 Santa Cruz County Fair with a roar! Monster Trucks and Motorcycles will fill the Race Track on Wednesday night, September 16, starting at 8 PM. This opening night motorsport event brings back the thrill of huge trucks and daredevil motorcycles all going air born. And there is a special connection for the Fair, the monster trucks are the passion of Watsonville resident Kelvin Ramer.

Ramer got his first pickup truck in high school, and he would take it to the local sand pits and play. Ramer says he’d drive through water, over jumps, get sideways, and just have fun. He was the first at his school to put a lift and big Super Swamper tires on his truck. After high school, he moved to Arizona to attend Universal Technical Institute. While there Ramer competed in student drag races and also did his first truck pull. After graduation he moved back to California and started going 4-wheeling with local off-road clubs. Ramer says that he has been to most of the off-road spots in California, including the Rubicon, Hollister Hills and Pismo, and participated in annual events like Mud-In-Yer-Eye. He continued competing in more truck pulls and also a few mud bogs. Ramer has raced 80cc Shifter Karts, and earned a Kart track championship in 2000.

22

How did he get hooked on big trucks? Well to hear him explain it, “The first time my wife and I saw a Monster Jam truck, we thought it looked like a lot of fun!” He added, “In 1984, we started buying parts and building a Monster Jam truck of our own. After a series of setbacks Ramer tried for the third time and luck was with him. “We saved, bought parts and built the Monster Jam in our spare time. The Monster Jam truck took 7 years to complete, from 1997 to 2004. Our first Monster Jam show was Anaheim in January, 2005.” SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FAIR GUIDE | www.santacruzcountyfair.com

A shipwreck of fun returns to the Santa Cruz County Fair as the pirate Capt’n Jack Spareribs brings his act back to the Fair. Visitors may catch a glimpse of the “Jack Sparrow” spoof moseying around the Fairgrounds throughout the day and those who stumble upon his wrecked ship will witness the pirate’s comedic performance that features juggling torches, knives, cannon balls and clubs, along with magic tricks and ventriloquism. Kids in the audience are invited to be part of the show. Spareribs, also known as Ace Miles, has fully committed to the pirate life. He got the tattoos, installed real gold teeth and grew his own pirate beard, that’s right kids, the beard is real. From his start as an entertainer in the Bay Area, Miles has performed at festivals and fairs throughout California, Nevada, and Washington for the past 30 years. Visitors will see Capt’n Jack Spareribs strolling the grounds and performing three times daily on the Playhouse Stage

aise ‘em up, Raise ‘em up, Raise ‘em up high!” will ring throughout the Fairgrounds Thursday night as country music artist, Austin Webb, performs at the 2015 Santa Cruz County Fair. Hailing from South Carolina, Webb launched into the spotlight after winning a local song writing competition. He moved to Nashville after a bad break-up, and his winning-demo reached the hands of Grammy awardwinning producer Bryon Gallimore who offered him a publishing deal. In 2012 he released his debut single “It’s All Good” and the following year released his second single “Slip On By” (2013) which hit the Billboard Top 40 Singles list. Webb was named “One To Watch in 2013” by Nash Country Weekly which wrote, “It’s one thing to be a gifted writer, another to be a talented singer, and even another to be a dynamic performer. Combine them all with a personality and sense of humor that engages everyone in the room, and stardom has to be around the corner.” His most recent singles include “Raise ‘Em Up” (2014) and “All Country on You” (2015). Austin Webb will perform Thursday July 30th, at 7:30 PM, on the Amphitheater Stage. And a ticket into the Fair is a free ticket into the show.

(aka Ag Hort)

T

he Agriculture/Horticulture Department is looking forward to enjoying “Country Nights and Carnival Lights,” at the 2015 Fair. There will be new exhibitors and lots of innovative educational hands-on discovery and activities for youth and adults alike.

WHISKEY HILL FARMS will celebrate their first year as an exhibitor and they will help Fair patrons learn about their “regenerative agriculture practices.” Whiskey Hill Farms feels that regenerative agriculture goes beyond organic and sustainable farming, as it is a process that provides for continuous soil rejuvenation. Come and learn about how they accomplish this by using helpful pests, capturing rain water, doing top soil creation programs, building enhancing populations of micro-organisms into the soil, utilizing advanced crop rotation programs and permaculture inter-crop design. Whiskey Hill Farms chose their name to tie back into the bootlegging history of the very hill where their farm is located today on the north side of Watsonville in the Corralitos foothills.

Returning this year will be ALLEN MORGAN, founder and steward of Santa Cruz Heirloom Seed and distributor for Seed Saver Exchange. His display will be about “old time medicine” and will include medicinal heirloom herbs and flowers and how they help the body, both internally and externally. This exhibit will be an education in self-health and warrants a visit. Allen will be selling his Seed Saver Exchange Seeds from the Amish country of Decorah, Iowa, so Fair visitors can grow their own healthful herbs and flowers. And he will be giving away over 1,000 free lettuce starts.

CECILIE SIEGEL and her Agriculture Detection Canine, CONAN, from the CONTRA COSTA COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, will be on hand Wednesday and Thursday to demonstrate what they do at work each day to protect all of us from agricultural pests being shipped to California via posts offices, FedEx and airports. These pests can be in boxes, crates or luggage and can potentially harm the agriculture industry. FAIR FAVORITES ARE RETURNING TO HELP ROUND OUT THE HARVEST BUILDING THIS YEAR: UÊLakeside Organic Gardens will once again be presenting a variety of their organic produce. UÊThe California Rare Fruit Growers, Monterey Bay Chapter, return to display their rare heirloom apples. UÊSanta Cruz County Farm Bureau will wow you with their exhibit tying into the theme, “Country Nights and Carnival Lights.” UÊMonterey Mushrooms, Ocean Mist Farms, Second Harvest Food Bank, Driscoll Strawberry Associates and Santa Cruz County Mosquito and Vector Control all have something special for Fair visitors

behind BLUE RIBBONS

J

ust how do they decide which of the hundreds of entries filling the Crosetti Building deserve a blue ribbon? It may come as a surprise to some, but there really is a very organized system in place.

All Home Arts entries are judged using the Danish system of judging which means they are judged against a set standard, rather than against each other like in the American system of judging. Therefore, if an entry is of “blue ribbon” quality, it will receive a first place ribbon. This can result in the awarding of more than one first place in a section. However, if no entries are of blue ribbon quality, judges do not need to award any first place ribbons. Items are judged by paid experts in their particular field. Judges come from as far as Sacramento and are quite serious about their work. They use pre-determined criteria to judge the quality of an entry, recording their comments on judging sheets to provide feedback. Judges are encouraged to give complimentary and constructive comments geared toward helping the entrant to better their skills. It serves as a great way to receive helpful feedback and edge even closer to joining the sea of blue ribbons to be found throughout the department.

HOME ARTS Special Contests Opening Day of the Fair doesn’t mean the spirit of competition can take a rest in the Home Arts Department, there’s still more judging to be done. Their Special Contests run throughout the Fair and unlike the main competitions, entries are brought to the fair the day of the contest. They are judged and remain on display throughout the remaining fair days. No prior entry is required.

THE SPECIAL CONTESTS THIS YEAR ARE: Wednesday, September 16 Thursday, September 17 Friday, September 18 Saturday, September 19 Sunday, September 20

Diaper Derby& I

TODDLER CONTEST

f it’s been some time since you have had a little one in the house or that is something you have yet to experience, you might want to plan on being in Paddy Smith Park on Saturday during the Fair. The Diaper Derby/Toddler Contest kicks off, or rather crawls off, starting at 1 PM.

These slow motion races for the prize begin orderly enough but as soon as the whistle blows an entertaining chaos breaks out. The kids are cute and their parents are entertaining. Some of the competitors head straight for the finish line, at least ion the beginning, but most wander off when they spot something far more interesting than dad jiggling the car keys on the other side of the mat. The derby has its roots in the celebrations held in pioneer communities and was a part of the Santa Cruz Fair in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Fair Board of Director Loretta Estrada brought the event back to the Fair and it grows in popularity each year. While the Kentucky Derby calls itself the fastest two minutes in sport, the Fair derby is the slowest two minutes. But way more fun!

Fundraiser

he Santa Cruz County Fair Heritage Foundation’s (SCCFHF) Annual Heritage Hog Fundraiser is underway. Each year, the Foundation chooses an applicant to raise a “Heritage Hog” that is sold at the Junior Livestock Auction during the Santa Cruz County Fair and Horse Show, this year to be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015. The community has an opportunity to give a tax-deductible gift to the Heritage Hog to support much needed improvements on the fairgrounds. Janell Moules has been selected to raise this year’s Heritage Hog and will receive a $1,000 scholarship for her efforts. The Santa Cruz County Fair is home to many youth activities in our community including 4-H, FFA, Junior Fair Board, Junior Livestock, little league, horsemanship, youth exhibit programs, 2nd Saturday on the Farm, and more. The SCCFHF is proud that all of these youth oriented programs help children learn the responsibility, accountability, leadership and teamwork needed to participate in such community projects. The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds is a unique venue for our youth to showcase their accomplishments. Last year the main well for the Fairgrounds collapsed, and Heritage Hog donations funded the repair of old water pipes and installation of a new well pump. A computer monitoring system was also installed to inform the Fairgrounds of future water problems as well as water usage. This new watering system showed that the current water tanks only store enough water to supply the Fairgrounds with 3 ½ hours during peak demand. This year’s Heritage Hog Fundraising Program will focus on raising funds for storage tanks.

ALL-ALASKAN

Racing Pigs

THE RACING PIGS RETURN TO THE BEAUTIFUL LAWN NEAR THE LIVESTOCK AREA, BRINGING CHEERING CROWDS TO THE SANTA CRUZ COUNTY FAIR! These prestigious porkers have appeared in hundreds of television news reports and over 500 newspaper articles, and they’re returning to the Santa Cruz Fair for three appearances daily. Although the Alaska State Fair has been their home site for 26 years, they have a soft spot for Santa Cruz County, according to manager Bart Noll. “We first played here in 1988 and had a blast – the Santa Cruz County Fair fans are the best!” he says, adding that they’ve returned almost two dozen times since. Two of the main ingredients for the All-Alaskan Racing Pig shows are comedy and competition. These perky pigs are natural hams, so to speak, and they’ve brought home the bacon at shows all over the western U.S. and Alaska. Another important ingredient of the race is cookies, which is the treat that the pigs are racing to win. Each race only lasts about six seconds (these pigs are fast!) and each 20-minute show features four races. Bart Noll admits that his eight pigs are a little spoiled. They live in an air-conditioned trailer, eat well and get a fresh cedar or pine bedding change twice daily. “They love what they do,” Bart says, “and they like people and are fun to work with.” Watch to see which one of the All-Alaskan Racing Pigs tries to hog the limelight at races held every day in their Fair home on the Livestock Lawn

THE

T

Youth Department

he Youth Organization participants are busy throughout the year, not just at Fairtime. Scouts, both Girl and Boy Scout troops, have been working on leadership skills, badges, camps and community service.

The FFA Chapters at Soquel, Watsonville and North Salinas High Schools are helping students add to their knowledge as well as to the community through their Ag Mechanics and Ag Science Programs. In order to accomplish both of these goals they work through three discipline areas starting with the traditional academic classroom and a grounding in theory and fundamentals. The students then focus on to Leadership and Community Service. This broad category of interests includes environmental studies, marketing, research, entrepreneurship, public speaking, construction, engineering, diesel mechanics, sustainable agriculture, the Guide Dog Puppy Program and even a pantry project that helps local families. Students go on to earn proficiency awards and certifications in agriculture and animal husbandry to name a few. Finally, students move into supervised agricultural experiences by getting out into the field or on the ranch. In summary, after the theory and practice, these future leaders get hands on, common sense, practical experience. The 4-H Youth Development Program offers many ways to improve public speaking, leadership and citizenship skills. Members learn to achieve goals and feel proud about their accomplishments. One of the ways local Scotts Valley 4-H members Galina Cantey and Cade Gillen used their leadership skills was to earn their Emerald Star Achievement Award and at the same time benefited the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds. Galina and Cade organized volunteers to plant trees and shrubs at the Fairgrounds RV Park. Not all 4-H is work, there is plenty of room for fun and learning. Galina along with a leader started a folk guitar project for members of the club. Galina also started a Ukulele Project for club members who have performed throughout Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz. During this year’s Fair the Scotts Valley 4-H Club musicians will be performing periodically throughout the Fair. Come by the Youth Organizations Department in the Crosetti Building and find out what our youth are up to today. You may be surprised.

Yesterday’s Farm CELEBRATES 30 YEARS!

A

s the Agricultural History Project (AHP) continues celebrating its 30th Anniversary, Yesterdays Farm will part of the Celebration.

The Ag History Project has been producing an exhibit at the annual Santa Cruz County Fair each year from the inception. Our first year was a small 10’x10’ space in the Harvest building giving out samples of wheat to children and explaining how wheat is used in our daily life. The second year we took half of the Harvest Building and created a Wheat Field with real wheat stubbles. A threshing machine was set up, belted to Ken McCrary’s Steam Engine from Big Creek Lumber and the third year we started to produce Yesterdays Farm and have been doing it ever since. This year we will be doing an exhibit again on wheat, but this time we will be threshing the wheat just like it was done before the Industrial Revolution. Wheat will be threshed on a wood floor, cleaned and then ground into flour. At the end on the demonstration Claudia Scott will bring out a loaf of Bread made from wheat that was ground the previous day and baked in Claudia’s Kitchen. Other activities that you can enjoy are the Kid’s Tractor driving in the Race Track Area, Spinners and Weavers exhibit in the Codiga Center and Museum, the Early Day Gas Engine and Tractor Association exhibits on the lawn area and every evening we will be producing the Tractor Parade. Our Volunteers will be demonstrating restoring a piece of equipment or just visiting with you. The Draft Horses will be back and so will Kim Kobow, the Horseshoe Specialist. Both of these demonstrations draw a lot of attention during events at AHP. And while you are on AHP’s site, notice all of the new signage that was installed this past year. It’s all part of making AHP a place to learn about the History of Agriculture on the Central Coast.

SEE YOU AT THE FAIR!

39TH ANNUAL

Pie Baking Contest

APTOS PLAYED A ROLE IN ESTABLISHING FARM BUREAU’S ANNUAL APPLE PIE BAKING CONTEST In 1977, Aptos apple grower Ed Silva proposed to the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau that an Apple Pie Baking contest be held each year at the County Fair to promote locally grown apples. The first contest was a success as now the 39th contest will be held Wednesday, September 16th, opening day of the County Fair. All entries will feature locally grown apples. Each year there are four different judges from a broad cross-section of the community. Amateur bakers from all over the county enter their favorite recipes to see how they compare against their friends and neighbors. The contest is organized by the Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau and sponsored by the Pajaro Valley apple growers, shippers and related industries as well as pie lovers throughout Santa Cruz County and the Pajaro Valley.

In Memory of Frederick S. Silva

O

n Wednesday, July 22, 2015, Frederick Sousa Silva, of Watsonville, California, passed away at his home with family after a brief illness.

Frederick “Fred” Sousa Silva was born in Topsfield, Massachusetts on June 12, 1936, to Alexander and Jennie (Espindola) and was one of sixteen children. Fred grew up working on the family farm where he developed his love for farming, horses, and The Topsfield Fair. When his parents moved to Santa Cruz in 1955, Fred soon followed. His father told him to bring all he owned when he came west so Fred drove from Massachusetts to California in a pickup truck with one Hereford bull in the back. Fred founded Silva General Engineering and had a successful career in construction, his work taking him throughout Santa Cruz County, the Pajaro Valley, and the South Bay. According to John Kegebein, for over the past 40 years, Fred and his horses were heavily involved in the Santa Cruz County Fair. For the past 10 years, he loved being part of the Agricultural History Project and “Day at the Farm” where he enjoyed bringing his horses and demonstrating early 20th century farming. Fred’s teams will continue to be part of the County Fair and the Agricultural History Project. Fred was a student of farming history and had a great respect for Amish farming techniques. His original 2-horse teams were Belgian Draft and his recent 3-horse teams were Clydesdales. Fred took part in many local events with his horse and wagon teams. Fred Silva is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Tina Viega Silva; daughter, Cindy McDowell, of Watsonville; daughter, Debbie Silva of Victorville, CA; and son, Alexander Silva, of Watsonville.
