GIFTING YOURSELF by Michael Olson "OARD -EMBER 4HINK ,OCAL First, County of Santa Cruz

“I don’t believe there is anything special about local! Sell me!”

Happy Holidays! No, really, happy holidays! And here is one way you can make your holidays really truly happy: Give gifts of yourself! It’s easy! All you have to do is shop the locallyowned businesses of Think Local First County of Santa Cruz, because those businesses are the core of the local economy that supports you, your family, friends and community.

10

2015 Holiday Gift Guide

Okay. Here are a few reasons why gift shopping at locally-owned businesses this holiday season will make your gift giving special and you truly happy: First, and foremost, your locally-owned business community really is you. It is your friends and neighbors– the owners and employees of those businesses– who place their time and talent at risk to keep your local economy thriving. They are the glue that holds us all together by working with local service organizations to help those in need, by sitting on government committees to decide how to manage our resources, and by supporting the athletic

activities of our young. This community cannot be purchased at big box store. Therefore, when you give gifts purchased from locally-owned businesses, you are really giving the gift of community, and that truly is a very special gift! Second, more of the money you spend at locally owned businesses stays within the community, so you can spend it again, and again and again. To demonstrate the efficacy of this principle, Think Local First conducted A MONTH LONG h'REAT -ONEY 2ACEv IN WHICH lVE CHECKS FROM lVE LOCAL financial institutions were handed out via a drawing to five members of the locally-owned business community. Each 'REAT -ONEY 2ACE CHECK HOLDER WAS TASKED WITH SPENDING THEIR CHECK AT another locally-owned business, which THEN WAS ASKED TO SPEND THEIR CHECK at another locally-owned business, and so on through the month. At the end of this DAY 'REAT -ONEY 2ACE THE lVE CHECKS HAD GENERATED IN LOCAL business. If you pause, for just a moment, to consider how much local business the five 'REAT -ONEY 2ACE CHECKS WOULD have generated had they been spent at a big box store, you will realize just how special are gifts purchased from locallyowned businesses.

Third, locally-owned businesses, by virtue of the individuals who own and operate them, promote a community that is by nature colorful, diverse, and unique. Though we who have lived long in Santa Cruz County find it easy to accept the colorful character of our community as being the norm, it is really only our norm. To see what those outside of our community see as the norm, visit one of the many small cities throughout the land in which a big box store has supplanted all the family-owned businesses. In those cities the norm is too often boarded up storefronts, a giant parking lot, and the cold, harsh fluorescent lighting of h/N 3ALE "UY .OW v 7HEN YOU WALK down a street in Santa Cruz County, you walk in a very special place, one made so largely by the number of our independent businesses. Therefore when you give a gift from your locallyowned business community, you help maintain a community that attracts visitors from throughout the world, and that is very special.

“That’s all very nice. But I can buy gifts for less money at the big box store! -AYBE -AYBE NOT As host of over a thousand editions of the Food Chain Radio program, which is

syndicated to a national audience out of KSCO Santa Cruz and archived at www. metrofarm.com, I have come to the conclusion there are three fundamental truths I willingly defend regarding hWHAT S EATING WHAT v AND WITH TONGUE in cheek and literary license in hand, call THEM h,AWS OF THE &OOD #HAIN v -Y Third Law of the Food Chain: Cheap food isn’t! We are often told how fortunate we are to live in a land where food is so cheap. I stand in opposition to this assertion. Food is made cheap by substituting vital nutrients with superfluous calories, and by subsidizing the true cost of production. Thus the cheap food promised is really the expensive food delivered. I believe the same is true with the cheap foreign-made goods for sale at the Big "OX STORE S h/N 3ALE "UY .OW v 4HOSE cheap goods were made possible at the expense of our being able to make them for ourselves, and thus we now borrow trillions from our children to buy them, and that, fellow shoppers, is very expensive indeed! $ECEMBER IS ALWAYS 3HOP ,OCAL -ONTH IN 3ANTA #RUZ #OUNTY -AKE YOUR GIFTING TRULY special by shopping first at the shop’s that carry the Think Local First logo. You will be truly happy!

A History of Hanukkah A

t Hanukkah, we commemorate THE VICTORY OF THE -ACCABEES over the Greek/Syrian forces of +ING !NTIOCHUS IN THE YEAR " # % That regime, those oppressors, sought to impose paganism on the Jewish people. They tried to convince other Jews through all sorts of means the value of paganism over the Bible, over Judaism. They put a pagan idol, Zeus, in the Temple, and they forced Jews to EAT NON KOSHER FOOD -ANY *EWS TRIED to accommodate to this culture that had been forced on them. There was a group of people who decided they wanted their old ways back.

4HIS GROUP CALLED THE -ACCABEES LED BY A MAN NAMED -ATTATHIAS AND HIS BROTHERS revolted against these Hellenistic AUTHORITIES !ND BY THE TH DAY OF THE month of Kislev — the Jewish calendar is a lunar calendar, but usually this date falls during December — they regained control over the Temple, cleansed it from the defilement, and rededicated it. And that’s what Hanukkah means—rededication. When they regained the Temple and took out all the impurities and idols, they wanted to celebrate but realized there was only enough oil to keep the flame burning for one day. It would take eight days to get more oil. They knew they did

not have enough. They went ahead and lit the flame anyway. They trusted in God, and a miracle occurred — the lamp that was only to last for one day stayed lit for eight days until the new oil came in. This is how Hanukkah became the “festival of LIGHTS v During Hanukkah, we light the menorah — one candle each night representing the miracle of that day, so that by the end of the eight-day holiday we have eight candles lit. We place the menorah by a window so that people can see the miracle that happened here. There is also a custom of giving gifts, especially to children.

her only day off, yet she says she often finds herself dancing anyway. It is just what her body wants to do. When asked in a recent interview what she liked most about ballet, Colehower replied, “I like the structure of it. I like the right and WRONG OF BALLET v 3HE RECOGNIZES THE PRACTICED precision of dance and the time and work it takes to get it right. She is an artist, but she also views herself as an athlete. She understands the conditioning, the dedication, and the physical power it takes to execute difficult movements and make them appear fluid and effortless to audiences. !S ONE OF THE SNOWmAKES IN h4HE .UTCRACKER v she must concentrate on the sharp, precisely orchestrated movements that make the snowflakes come alive on stage. That perfect synchronicity creates a fluid, ethereal backdrop for Clara and the Snow Queen. Fourteen ballerinas teetering on their toes must look as light and airy as real snow, but only powerful, athletic legs, and hours and hours of practice can make that happen. When Colehower attacks the role of the Soldier Doll, she has to

have complete command of each muscle to create the illusion of playfulness and wildness. It is a delicate balance between dancer and athlete, particularly when she must execute four to five straddle jumps in a row, hitting a perfect aerial split each time. In sharp contrast to the overt athleticism of this strenuous role, Colehower has to tap into a different part of her dancer reservoir to pull up the softness and gracefulness required for her role as the Orange Flower in the Waltz of the Flowers. Her final Nutcracker role is in the Chinese Tea Dance, a delightful-albeit-strenuous and extremely tiring dance sequence (who knew?), with no time to even catch her breath. Colehower likened it to a sprinting runner. -AYA #OLEHOWER IS A DANCER WHO IS PROVING that she has a wide-ranging skill set. She is leaping into the demands of being cast in four very different roles in Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre’s h4HE .UTCRACKER v AND LIKE ANY ARTIST AND ATHLETE she enjoys the challenges and the rewards of being mentally and physically prepared for success. Because she loves the structure of ballet, she is committed to getting it right.

t’s amazing to see how many organizations and people are involved in helping others in our county. Whether it’s kids or seniors, the homeless, sick or helpless, there are charitable organizations that can assist in making this holiday season one of hope for those in need. You can take part in this effort by volunteering or giving donations to bring joy to others less fortunate. Whether it’s helping to provide shelter, Holiday gifts for children, food for families, helping the victims of personal disasters, or just being there as support in the most difficult of times for others, this is the time of year to connect with one or more of these organizations. Once you become part of this effort during the holidays, you may find yourself involved the whole year because the need never goes away. 7HATEVER ROLE YOU DECIDE TO TAKE YOU WILL BE h0AYING IT &ORWARD v None of us is assured that we will never need or haven’t needed the help of others at some time in our lives so take part in helping MAKE A (APPY (OLIDAY FOR OTHERS IN OUR COMMUNITY

Dining Out FOR THE Holidays By Noel Smith

I

t used to be that holiday dinners at home were much more popular. With larger families

and much more time and many more hands to prepare the feast, there was time to enjoy the event and the company. As some of us grow older, our families are not always available for the holidays and with our busy lives, it seems much more practical and enjoyable to let someone else prepare and serve the meal and (what a gift!) clean up the chaos afterwards.

So why not give our loved ones and ourselves the gift of dining out for the holidays? Whether it’s celebrating Thanksgiving or Hanukkah or Christmas, take the time to find out your favorite

restaurant’s special holiday meals and schedules. As you browse through this Holiday Gift Guide, take advantage of dining out at one of the featured restaurants and let its chef take the burden of planning a menu, buying the ingredients, and preparing the meal, and let the staff set the table, serve the meal, pour the wine or other adult beverage, and clear the table for that piece of apple or pumpkin pie and coffee to finish the feast. Just glancing at the possible choices available at these restaurants, you can choose a traditional turkey or ham entrÊe. Other possibilities for the main course include prime rib, salmon, lamb, swordfish or ‌ just about anything you want from curries to hamburgers. The thing to remember is that all you have to do is sit down and enjoy. Some of our dining venues include

A

holiday meal shared with family and friends is a special occasion, and it calls for special touches in the kitchen. Cooking with olive oil is one way to achieve exceptional flavors that taste as good as they are good for you. Extra virgin is the highest quality of olive oil,

smooth & special

Keep these tips in mind when shopping for olive oil:

meaning that the acidity level of the oil is low. Options range from light flavor profiles to more traditionally robust extra virgin varieties, depending on the type of dish you’re planning.

s

Select the oil for quality, not color. Olive oils come in a range of colors, from dark green to a light golden color, due to the type of olives in the oil.

s

Look at the label for quality indicators.

s

Look for a bottle that’s dark in color, which helps prevent oxidation, keeping oil fresher, longer. Keep oil in your pantry, away from heat and light.

Extra virgin olive oil contains antioxidants, polyphenols and no cholesterol, making it a great addition to (or substitution for butter in) recipes savory and sweet. The strong flavors of Extra Virgin Olive Oil are best suited for marinades, pastas and salad dressings. Alternatively, the smooth, fruity taste of new extra virgin olive oil is ideal for more subtle preparations such as sautéing, sauces and stir-frying.

With the holidays fast approaching, opportunities for delicious sweets and elegant drinks are bound to be plentiful. Versatile and available year round, California dried figs are naturally sweet, nutrient rich and full of flavor. They also make a great snack during the busy holidays. Keeping Your Pets Happy &Safe for the Holidays

T 1

he holidays are a festive time for us; however, we can easily overlook potential dangers to our pets. Taking precautions can help ensure that you and your family, including the four-legged members, will enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season!

Holiday Tinsel & Ornaments Tinsel, while not toxic, is very attractive to pets, particularly cats. If swallowed, it can cause serious injury to your pet. Place bright and colorful tree ornaments made of glass, aluminum and paper ornaments higher up on the tree. Broken pieces are dangerous and also create a choking hazard.

Holiday Lighting & Candles Twinkling, shiny and dangling holiday electric lights are another source of danger if a pet chomps down on an electrical cord so inspect cords for fraying. If you have candles, not only can pets seriously burn themselves, but knocking over candles creates a fire hazard and may leave a trail of hot wax that can burn the pads of paws and more. Place candles out of reach of your pets.

HOLIDAY GIFTS IDEAS for your PETS

Y

our pets seldom come right out to tell you what they want for Christmas, and often

they don’t even help out with a few strategic hints. So take some time thinking like your pet and considering what would make them happier, healthier and more comfortable this year. Here are a few ideas for pet holiday gifts. WEATHER: Here on the Central Coast weather-related gifts may seem unnecessary. But even here some

shorthaired dogs and cats may need a snug-fitting sweater or pet jacket they can wear on your daily walk.

chase. Take some time to observe your pet to find out what they respond to when playing.

COMFORT: If your pet suffers from arthritis or other painful condition, consider getting a new bed that provides more comfort or decorate its sleeping area with a fluffy new blanket and plush toy. Some cats and dogs may be comforted by music or maybe even a story recorded in your own voice to play while you are away.

TREATS: Some shops have healthy treats and cookies for dogs and cats. Avoid empty calories and sugars that can damage your pet’s teeth and cause them to put on a few extra pounds of their own. Avoid treating your pet with people food. Chocolate, raisins, grapes, onions, garlic, chicken and turkey bones, avocados, macadamia nuts, etc. can be toxic to pets!

TOYS: Chew toys (some with squeakers) are common holiday gifts for pets. Consider toys that provide physical activity (a laser pointer or teaser toy to chase), cat furniture to climb on and scratch with claws or balls and Frisbees for dogs to

COMPANIONSHIP: What your pet really wants for Christmas is to spend happy time with you. How about a new leash and collar for walks or Frisbees and tag toys for some exercise and fun together? It’s a healthy gift for both of you!
