tense. The seat rumblings actually leave your body vibrating long after it’s done, and the side-toside motion perfectly captures real-life movement, whether it’s taking a sharp turn in a car or the subtle floating sensation of hitting zero G’s on a rollercoaster. The vibration is much less jarring on a low setting, and the seat movements are not as pronounced, but it’s still enough to make you feel as though you’re a part of the action. Each shift and set of vibration is meant to match what’s on screen. A door slam is a door slam, whereas a car crash is a car crash. Everything is based on what you would feel in real life and is carefully crafted. “Everything is scripted by an

artist,” Amato said. “An artist went through that film frame by frame, painstakingly.” “I can’t stress enough that this is an art form.” D-Box started as a speaker company, then moved into motion simulation in the 1990s. It produces flight simulators for pilot training and has sold space shuttle simulation to NASA. Amato said the artists who put the movements together are often musicians and cinematographers with technological knowhow. This guarantees that every aspect of the film is considered when matching up D-BOX seat movements. The corresponding actions and

summer, some of the biggest blockbusters will be aided by DBOX technology. You might find yourself flying on a broom with Harry Potter or riding the high seas with Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Odds are, Amato said, you’ll enjoy the experience, even at its most intense. “We have a computer program that shows what setting each seat is at during the movie. I’ve been doing this for a while now, and almost every time each seat is set to high within 15 minutes of the SARA POKORNY/THE TIMES LEADER movie.” Purchasing a D-BOX seat adds Bill Falcon, of Wilkes-Barre Movies 14, and David Amato, of D-BOX $8 on top of the regular movie ad- Technologies, take a test run in the new motion seats at the simulator kiosk in the movie-theater lobby. mission price.

movements ensure that a twohour session in the seat isn’t a constant, daunting experience. “If you and I are sitting down at the kitchen table having a conversation, like what might be happening in the movie, your chair isn’t going to just move,” Amato said. “Neither will this chair. We put the movements in where they should be.” If you still aren’t sure if the DBOX experience is right for you, a simulator kiosk in the lobby of Movies 14 plays a quick clip of “Fast Five.” The fifth installment in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise is the movie now showing in the D-BOX auditorium.
