Student Journeys Summer 2018 Brochure

Page 1

Summer travel programs for high school students. Explore your interests with New York Times experts.

Why Travel With The New York Times Since its founding in 1851, The New York Times has included coverage of education and travel as part of its journalistic mission. On New York Times Student Journeys, curious and adventurous high school students delve into a theme of their choosing through hands-on experiences with a New York Times expert and a team of group leaders. Through activities in the field and interactions with locals, students expand their learning beyond the traditional classroom and pursue a project with guidance from accomplished experts and leaders. TRAVEL TO DESTINATIONS PROMINENT IN THE TIMES

Our journeys take students to places that have been covered in The Times, where students can benefit from our insider’s perspective as they explore themes and topics associated with local and global issues. EXPLORE YOUR PASSIONS

Each journey has a focus on science, arts, politics, business, journalism, history or food. These themes are designed to help you explore a new topic or go deeper into one that’s already a passion. LEARN FROM NEW YORK TIMES EXPERTS

Students are joined by a New York Times expert who is a specialist in the destination or theme. These accomplished individuals join each program to lead informal discussions, inspire students to develop new perspectives and offer advice and mentorship.

“Our son learned how to engage in a new culture and how to be a great traveler. He also developed a great relationship with a worldclass thinker and writer who made a great impression upon him as a role model.” — ABBEY GARDNER & PATRICK DOLAN, NEW YORK, N.Y.

SUMMER 2018

“The highlight of my program was being able to meet and speak with people actively making a difference. At the end of the trip, creating and presenting an easy project about something I was interested in gave me a great sense of accomplishment.” — SASKIA E., SAN JOSE, CALIF. AMERICAN SOUTH PARTICIPANT

OUR TRAVEL PROVIDER

Operating each of our journeys is Putney Student Travel. Since 1951, Putney has offered high school and middle school students the opportunity to shape their world through travel, cultural engagement, friendship and fun. With a focus on logistics and safety, Putney creates experiential learning programs that inspire students in real-world contexts, with an emphasis on deep engagement off the beaten track. GROUP LEADERS

In addition to a Times expert, each trip is led by a carefully selected team of group leaders, distinguished in fields related to the themes of our programs. They are not only advisers, guides and mentors, but also good friends. They share our commitment to helping students make their own discoveries in a safe, supportive and fun environment. All leaders hold bachelor’s or advanced degrees. LIFE ON THE ROAD

Spend each day engaged in activities related to your theme. Interview scientists working to advance artificial intelligence, pitch a business idea to entrepreneurs, review a designer’s artistic vision or meet politicians, activists and lawmakers with differing views on immigration. Hone your skills in communication, critical thinking and presentation as you develop a project of your choosing and share it at the end of your journey. HEALTH AND SAFETY

To ensure the health and safety of our students, we use reputable transportation companies, have strong networks of in-country contacts and identify English-speaking clinics. All leaders are certified in C.P.R. and first aid, and trained in safety and emergency procedures. Program days are filled with structured activities, with occasional times when students explore a designated area in small groups.
