NEW WINDSOR COMMUNITY DAY 2015

Welcome to the Sixth annual Town of New Windsor Community Day

By Matt Veronesi & Patrick Mangan

On Saturday September 26th, 2009 the Town of New Windsor had our first ever New Windsor Community Day. We honestly did not know what to expect and if anyone was going to show up. Being a new event we had limited funds which meant limited attractions. We had some live music, a small fireworks show, two food vendors, two bounce houses, and around 40-50 craft/retail vendors. The event ended up being a success with roughly 2,500 people attending. Fast forward six years later to Saturday August 23rd, 2014 for the sixth annual New Windsor Community Day. We had 200+ craft/retail/promotional vendors, 20+ food vendors, two live entertainment stages with live music including a performance by Tim Urban from American Idol, a dance demonstration, a clown, a juggler, a magician, three matches of professional wrestling, a car giveaway, a zipline, a stunt jump, a climbing wall, a pie eating contest, pony rides, 10 bounce houses, a Tumble Bus, a carousel, an arcade trailer, a traveling petting zoo, a mechanical bull, characters including super heroes and princesses, and a huge fireworks show. We had 30,000 people attend the event over the course of the day making it our largest crowd ever up 10,000 people from the year before. New Windsor Community Day has free parking and free admission. We don’t charge for any of the above entertainment attractions except for the zip line and stunt jump. People attending only have to open their wallets if they want to buy something from one of the vendors or to purchase food. It is truly a great event that also generates a profit every year for the New Windsor Special Events fund which goes right back into special events in New Windsor like our Summer Concert Series, Memorial Day Parade, Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Party, Summer Camps etc. page 6

The aspect that makes New Windsor Community Day most successful is sponsorships. Sponsorships are the key to any successful event, and we have been successful in keeping our sponsors happy which makes them want to come back every year. We also keep adding new sponsors every year which has allowed us to keep growing this event. For New Windsor Community Day we have sponsorships starting at $250 and going up to $5,000 and above. With a successful growing event obviously the costs associated with the event grow which can be offset with new sponsorships, but also the problems that come up during the event keep growing as well. In just six years of having New Windsor Community Day we have grown the event by over 1000%. There are three different types of sponsorships that we have for New Windsor Community Day. There are financial sponsorships, the sponsorship of equipment, and the sponsorship of services. All three are equally important. Financial sponsorships are key because without money coming in, there is no way to pay for all of our expenses and entertainment. Our Premier ($5,000) Sponsors for Community Day are all financial sponsors and they are Hannaford Supermarkets, Knox Village Apartments, and Feldman, Kleidman, Coffey, Sappe & Regenbaum LLP Attorneys at Law. Their financial support makes it possible for us to offer so much great entertainment for all who attend. Other financial sponsors are McGoey, Hauser, & Edsall Consulting Engineers, PC who are a Headline Sponsor ($3,500), and our financial Platinum Sponsors ($2,000) are Metal Container Corporation, Crystal Run Healthcare, Shoprite Supermarkets, Healey Brothers Kia, Innate Chiropractic, Brooks Funeral Home, Depew Energy Company, Camo Pollution Control, Global Companies LLC, RE/Max Benchmark Realty new windsor community day 2015

Group, and our Fireworks Sponsors the New Windsor Volunteer Ambulance Corp, the Vails Gate Fire Department, and the New Windsor Fire Department. The sponsorship of equipment is just as vital as financial sponsorships and helps us tremendously. Because of the event growing so much a problem that occurred was it became harder for handicapped or older event visitors to get around to all of the areas of the park. We began offering multiple golf carts that shuttle people around between the different parts of the park including parking lots which has helped tremendously with that issue. The golf carts are sponsored by Golf Cars Unlimited and On Par Golf Carts & Services who are both Platinum Sponsors. Another problem that occurred with the event growing so much was that we didn’t have enough electrical power. So we added four of the big trailer generators in different locations of the park which has taken care of that. The generators are quiet and don’t generate nasty fumes like the smaller louder generators. The generators are sponsored by Gentech LTD who are a Headline Sponsor for us. The two entertainment stages at Community Day that operate all day are also sponsored. Stage one which is located on the football field is sponsored by PRG Technologies who do stages for major concerts, and Broadway shows. If we were to rent this stage for the day instead of getting it sponsored by PRG it would cost a minimum of $5,000. Stage two which is located in the kids area and is a portable stage on wheels is lent to us by the Town of Newburgh Recreation Department. With such a big event we need so many tents, tables and chairs. Our Headline Sponsor Classic Tent & Party Rentals provides all of these things which saves us many thousands of dollars. Welcome to the Sixth annual Town of New Windsor Community Day Continued from page 6 In our kids area we have many bounce houses and slides that are sponsored by our Platinum Sponsor Durants Party Rentals. Because of their sponsorship we do not have to charge for the kids area it is free. With such a large event comes the problem of communication among all of the employees and emergency services. Our Platinum Sponsor NYCOMCO Wireless Communications alleviates this problem by providing all of our radios for Community Day. The third but equally essential form of sponsorship that we have for New Windsor Community Day is the

sponsoring of services. With the event growing so much it has gotten harder and harder to print out all of the signs that we need to help promote our sponsors. This year we added a new Platinum Sponsor P& P Quick Copy Center Inc. who will be printing all of our signs for Community Day. One of the other problems that came up with the growth of this event that had to be dealt with was not having enough parking. We added offsite parking at Cornwall High School with a shuttle bus service that runs all day provided by Leprechaun Lines. When parking at the event location gets full cars are redirected to the offsite location.

With this large event we bring in some entertainment from out of state such as Tim Urban who was on American Idol. When these entertainers come into Town they need a place to stay and our Platinum Sponsor Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham provides us with hotel accommodations. We are extremely grateful for all of our sponsors for New Windsor Community Day and this event would not be possible without all of their support. We ask that you please support our sponsors like they support us. Thank you so much! For a full list of all Community Day Sponsors please see the back of this Community Day Program or visit newwindsorcommunityday.com.

Caitlin Caporale headlines New Windsor Day 'The Voice' contestant comes back to her home crowd By SHANTAL RILEY sriley@tcnewspapers.com Caitlin Caporale is back. The Town of Newburgh native and recent contestant on NBC’s "The Voice" headlines New Windsor Community Day with an acoustic set on Aug. 29. Caporale spoke with the Mid Hudson Times this month about her life and career since she last appeared on "The Voice" in April. “I’m excited to be back,” said Caporale of her return to New Windsor. Before her television success – before she sang a duet with pop superstar Christina Aguilera in front of millions of television viewers this spring – Caporale sang while at school, in local shows and talent contests. She was chosen as the “idol” at the New Windsor Idol singing competition in 2012 and performed again at the event the following year. Caporale catapulted to national fame earlier this year as a contestant on NBC’s hit show "The Voice." She placed in the top 20 of 50,000 contestants, wowing judges and television viewers with her soulful, powerhouse vocals. Caporale was flown out to Los Angeles, provided vocal training by professional coaches and stars including singer-songwriter Pharell Williams. The Newburgh Free Academy graduate sang a duet with her singing idol Christina Aguilera. “It was a dream come true,” she said. Caporale, 23, performed songs including Demi Lovato’s “Warrior” and “Impossible,” sang by Aguilera and written by Alicia Keys. page 20

times community newspapers

Caporale, who had been singing since she was child, said the timing was perfect. “If I had gotten on the show a couple of years ago, I don’t know if I would have been ready,” she said. With performers like Williams and Aguilera in her corner, she gained needed confidence. Her fan base exploded. “Before I got on show, I had a couple hundred followers,” she said of her Twitter following. “Now, I’m up to 6,500.” After the “blind auditions” phase of the television show, her Instagram and Facebook followings swelled by the thousands. But, there was plenty of hard work involved in being a contestant on the show, Caporale said. “There’s so much more to it than what you see on television,” said Caporale. “There’s wardrobe, rehearsing, creating an image that will set you apart from others. It’s a lot of work.” Since her time on "The Voice," Caporale has been busy writing and recording her own songs. “I’m in the

process of recording an EP,” she said, due to be released in January. “I’ve always wanted to put out my own original music.” The recording will feature a mix of six original songs Caporale described

It was a dream come true SINGING A DUET WITH CHRISTINA AGUILERA.

as “soulful-pop.” The project was made possible through a grassrootsfundraising campaign hosted on the crowd-funding website Kickstarter. “The campaign raised over $11,000

to make my EP,” said Caporale, which went to pay for recording and distribution costs. “A lot of fans really came through for me.” Caporale is currently recording at Project Moon Productions in Middletown. Caitlin Caporale will perform more than a dozen cover songs on Stage One with guitarist Steve Mercier from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. The singer will sign autographs at a meetand-greet immediately following her performance. New Windsor Community Day takes place on Saturday, Aug. 29 at Kristi Babcock Memorial Park. Admission is free. For an event schedule and more information, visit Newwindsorcommunityday.com. Babcock Memorial continues to honor Kristi's legacy

By Kaitlyn Bennett

S

ince the renaming of the Mt. Airy Sports Complex, Matt Veronesi and all at the New Windsor Recreation Department completed the memorial for Kristi Babcock. Babcock was a 13-year member of the Recreation Department team who was dedicated to the many causes of the department. Beloved and inspirational, Babcock was tragically killed in a gun accident at her home after the final day of New Windsor’s summer camp two years ago. Since Babcock’s death, the New Windsor Recreation Department has been doing all it can to keep her memory alive. “When I was hired here, Kristi was already working here,” said Matt Veronesi, Director of Parks, Recreation, Buildings and Grounds for the Town of New Windsor. Veronesi announced the renaming of the Mt. Airy Sports Complex during his eulogy at her funeral.

Kristi Babcock, beloved member of the New Windsor Recreation Department, was tragically killed in a gun accident two years ago on August 16. “We were able to give one ray of positivity on a very, very dark day,”

said Veronesi, who also credits the rest of his department and the Town Board for rededicating the park. “Halloween was one of her favorite holidays...so we changed the name of the park at the Halloween party that year,” said Veronesi, who recalls how much Babcock loved to decorate and participate in Halloween and the Rec Department’s annual party. At Community Day, there was a ceremony for Babcock, complete with a song dedicated to her by Tim Urban. Babcock’s memorial continues her legacy during one of the town’s largest events. The centerpiece of the memorial, a 19-ton bolder, is from Babcock’s sister’s yard which displays a plaque, including Babcock’s photo and an inscription from those at the Town of New Windsor Recreation Department. “Quality Auto Body sent over a crane to move it,” said Veronesi, who is thankful for the many donations that made the memorial possible.

Last year, the 19-ton bolder to be used as Babcock’s memorial came from her sister’s yard, and was transported, by crane, thanks to Quality Auto Body. times community newspapers

Motor Unit celebrates 20 years

The Town of New Windsor Motor Unit was formed in 1995 with the determination and hard work of one officer. In 1992, Officer Michael Masopust approached the Chief of Police, Walter Koury as well as Sgt. Greg Gaetano with the idea of forming a motorcycle unit. An active and avid rider, he pursued this goal and received the permission of the Chief to approach then Town Supervisor George Green about the idea. Supervisor Green left office in 1994 and Supervisor George Meyers took office. A former State Trooper, Supervisor Meyers was very concerned about the necessity of the unit and more importantly about the safety of the officers in the unit. Masopust was then tasked to research the formation of the unit with comparable size police departments and provide information on statistics, injuries, cost and effectiveness of such a unit. He was able to gather copious amounts of information that times community newspapers

he compiled into a presentation for the Supervisor, who upon hearing and reviewing the information, gave him the authority to pursue the goal. To facilitate the training of officers in the operation of the motorcycles, Masopust attended a motorcycle Instructor school run by the Maryland State Police. Having no police motorcycle to train with or even to practice with, he practiced on his own Honda Goldwing motorcycle to prepare for the school. After attending the school, Masopust would go on to train the first members of the New Windsor Police Department Motorcycle Unit in motorcycle operation as well as members of other departments in the area over the next several years. Masopust then proceeded to acquire the department’s first motorcycle. Having no budget to work with, he established contact with the

Motor Unit celebrates 20 years Continued from page 27 Port Washington Police Department and brokered a deal where one undercover vehicle no longer being used by our department was traded for two Kawasaki motorcycles that the Port Washington Police Department no longer needed. The motorcycles were in poor condition, but with some hours of work, one working 1982 Kawasaki motorcycle was put into service out of the two. Meanwhile, Masopust had also applied for a grant from the State of New York with the assistance of Senator Larkin and newspaper reporter Bo Gill. A grant was shortly thereafter received by the Town of New Windsor for the purpose of purchasing a brand new motorcycle. That motorcycle, a 1995 Kawasaki, went into service and the charter members of the Unit utilized the two motorcycles for the next few years.

In 1997, the unit was going strong. Officers were utilizing the motorcycles on a daily basis and they proved to be very effective in traffic control as well as for public relations. The 1982 Kawasaki motorcycle was taken out of service when another grant was received for the unit to purchase a new motorcycle. A 1997 Harley Davidson Electraglide was the newest addition to the unit. In 1998, the Town purchased a new 1998 Harley Davidson Electraglide. The 1998 HD is the only

motorcycle that the Town purchased without the use of a grant or outside assistance in the 20 year history of the unit. The original three Motor Officers were joined by three additional officers and the unit was 6 men, three motorcycles strong. In the wake of 9/11, police departments throughout the area received an outpouring of support from corporations and individuals throughout the country. PO Brian McLean learned of a program that BMW Motorcycle Co. was initiating, repurposing used police motorcycles to agencies in the affected areas after the 9/11 attacks. He was able to procure a 1998 BMW Police motorcycle that was originally a CHIPS bike from California at no cost to the Town. That motorcycle replaced the 1995 Kawasaki, which now was relinquished to a training bike. In 2007, the Town received the last motorcycle that has joined the unit from a generous donation made by a local businessman. The 1997 HD was replaced with a new 2007 HD and the 1997 was placed on display at

Motorcyclepedia, a museum containing many historic motorcycles located on the New Windsor / Newburgh line on Rt 32. The Unit now consists of the 1998 HD, 1998 BMW and the 2007 HD. In addition to regular patrol functions, the Motorcycle Unit has performed special duties over the last 20 years. They have performed escorts for Presidential motorcades, Papal visits, and Military funerals. They have participated in parades, community functions, and fundraising events. Most somber and significant of the functions that the motor unit is tasked with are the escorts for officers lost in the line of duty. More recently, motor officers participated in the funerals for Det Liu and Det Ramos of the NYPD, Trooper Bryon Dickson of the Pennsylvania State Police, and more locally, Det Falcone of the C/ Poughkeepsie PD.
