WINTER PROGRAMS IN THE NEW YEAR

s we approach the December holiday season, Silver Threads sincerely hopes that you find joy in the various festivities and traditions that this time brings.

also be taken into consideration.

In this short guide, we’ll explore key factors to consider in making an informed decision, tailored to your unique needs so you end up with the perfect digital companion.

While higher-end models offer advanced features, budget-friendly options can still meet the basic needs of many users. Finding the right balance between functionality and cost ensures you get the tech you need without feeling the pinch.

FORM FACTOR: DESKTOP OR LAPTOP? Desktops offer power and larger screens, ideal for intricate tasks or watching videos, but lack portability. Laptops, on the other hand, provide mobility but may come with smaller screens. The trade-off here is balancing your need for screen size and power against the desire for on-the-go convenience. Consider your lifestyle and how you plan to use the computer to strike the right balance. Opting for a good quality device with upgradeable components ensures that your computer can adapt to evolving technology, extending its lifespan. PROCESSING POWER AND STORAGE Deciding needs around power and storage depends on your usage. If you plan to handle complex tasks or large files, opting for a faster processor and ample storage is wise. However, if your needs are more casual, a budgetfriendly option might be sufficient. Storage and backing up your precious pictures, videos and documents should

The guide is now available at Silver Threads Centres and on our website at www. silverthreads.ca

Our Saanich Centre, at 286 Hampton Rd. in the Tillicum Gorge neighbourhood, can be reached at 250-382-3151. Our Victoria Centre is at 1911 Quadra St., near the police station, and can be reached at 250-388-4268.

POST-PURCHASE SUPPORT: YOUR TECH SAFETY NET

Additionally, we provide eight weekly fitness classes, as well as opportunities to engage in dance, music, and creative arts. For those interested in sports, we offer table tennis, carpet bowling, floor shuffleboard, and the popular activity of pickleball.

Post-purchase support is your tech safety net. A retailer such as Mother Computers has got your back even after you swipe that credit card.

We have three weekly sessions of pickleball and on Wednesdays there is a coached session to offer basic lessons and help you get started.

Whether it’s a question, a glitch, or just a friendly chat about your new digital buddy, having ongoing assistance ensures you’re never alone. Initial set up and data transfer can be arranged, if you are not comfortable doing this yourself.

New programs available during the winter session include Westernstyle Mah Jong and Colour Theory Painting. These programs will be held at the Saanich Centre.

And if you are in need of accessibility features, such as larger fonts or voice commands, Mother can assist with this as well. For over 20 years, Mother Computers’ friendly staff has been trusted in empowering residents of Victoria, of all ages, with the knowledge and tools they need to safely and confidently use technology. Call or visit Mother today! We’re at 250-479-8561 or www.mothercomputers.com

Additionally, we are excited to announce our partnerships with Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Vancouver Island Performer Guild, and the Community Response Network. These collaborations will result in enhanced support for individuals with hearing impairments, entertaining performances such as Opera, and enlightening presentations. Silver Threads Service has been serving the community for more than 65 years. Our complete Winter Program Guide is available at www. silverthreads.ca

As a charitable organization that has been serving our community for seven decades, we are dedicated to providing older adults with a sense of purpose and a place where they feel valued and included. Older adults are often overlooked and are underserved in our society. We face unique challenges such as social isolation and financial insecurity. As a charity, we work to address these issues by providing access to essential programs and services in two locations and ensuring low cost and affordable options are available to all. It is important to note that membership is not a requirement to benefit from our services.

We kindly appeal to our community for a contribution to our charitable organization. Despite the challenges we have faced in recent years, the generosity of our supporters has been crucial in maintaining our core programs and services, as well as ensuring affordable fees. One of the issues we are particularly committed to addressing is food security. We have implemented programs to minimize food costs, provide low-cost options, and offer free food to those in need. This is an ongoing need that we are working hard to address. If you are in a position to make a donation, it would greatly enhance the lives of your fellow community members. Alternatively, if you require any support, please know that we are here to assist you. Donations can be made in person, by phone or online by using the secure Canada Helps page. Go to silverthreads.ca/support-us. Thank you for caring

Our centres serve as a hub for connection and companionship, while support is given to some who never step foot in our locations.

I Didn’t Think It Would Happen to Me

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2023 | 3

Q: I take good care of my teeth. I have followed recommendations of my dentist religiously – well, not every recommendation but every one that kept my teeth in good shape.

Last week I was surprised that he found I had an abscess. This was hard to believe because I go into the office for cleanings about three times a year. I had felt something in the tooth he found but it wasn’t major and would come and go without a lot of pain. When he showed me the x-ray I couldn’t believe the tooth had a problem. He also showed me that the gum around it had receded and was down on the root of the tooth. He also showed me that I wasn’t getting it cleaned properly because he pulled a bunch of gunk out of the gums.

He said it was unusual that a tooth with just a small filling would get an abscess. “Why then,” I asked? He said I was having a tough time cleaning the root, so plaque was consistently sitting there. He said that bacteria can actually get in through the root without causing decay and infect the nerve. He asked me if I remembered his recommendation for a gum graft in that area so the root would not get more and more exposed to plaque.

I said I hadn’t forgotten but I just didn’t think it would happen to me. “What do I do?” I asked. He told me I needed a root canal then crown to cover the whole tooth and root and then a gum graft. It’s frustrating. I guess I’ll go for it – what do you say?

A: Gingival, or gum, recession is a problem that most adults will face in their lifetime. It usually has several etiologies (causes). It may be genetic, it may result because of disease caused by poor brushing and flossing habits. Smoking is another big reason. Clenching and grinding are also known factors. Some systemic diseases, common or rare, can also weaken the gingiva and underlying bone.

In your situation, it’s important to know that a small filling may also be

a deep filling. Trauma from decay and trauma from removing the decay may have been a factor. In any case, root canal therapy is certainly called for if the tooth is still well supported in the bone. A crown that is well done should cover the tooth to the gum. It will be easier to clean than your own teeth and harder for bacteria to attach to. The graft will obviously prevent further recession. These treatments should allow healing of the tooth and long term service. If we can help, we’d like to. Call 778-410-2080 for a consultation. Based on actual patient cases © Calvin Ross Crapo

When you or your loved one’s memory and sensory perceptions become less reliable, it’s reassuring to know there are services available in your new senior living community, with specialized individual care for such cognitive challenges as Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. On the heels of The Vista’s Oct. 12 grand opening, the 11-storey residential retirement community is finalizing its license for its Memory Care studios, which is expected to be approved before the end of 2023. Known for luxury and comfort, the well-appointed contemporary and resort-like retirement community by Avenir Senior Living is designed to meet your lifestyle and personal care as your needs evolve. Welcoming social areas are sophisticated yet feel like home, and most have stunning ocean views. In a safe and secure environment, memory care will be provided to residents in 48 furnished studios on two floors, with 24-hour nursing support. The spacious studios allow each new resident to bring their own personal belongings to make it feel more like home. Each studio comes equipped with its own heating and air conditioning, private bathroom and shower.

Unique to Avenir communities, is the Cognitive Lifestyle program, through their nursing assessment process, identifies each resident’s individual cognitive skills and abilities. “As we fill up our second and third floors, we will separate our residents according to their cognitive level,” explains Jason Gurash, vicepresident, sales and marketing for Avenir. “Residents with early onset dementia will reside on the second floor, which includes a large outdoor patio for their enjoyment, and those with later stages will reside on the third floor.” He adds, “This allows our life enrichment coordinators to really get to know the residents and understand where they’re at so we can structure their daily activities and engagement accordingly.” PRE-MOVE-IN, ORIENTATION The Round Table Discovery Meeting is a process where the management team and nursing staff meet with each new family prior to their loved one becoming a new resident. “This meeting is an opportunity for us to learn as much about our new resident as possible so our staff can support a smooth transition,” says Gurash. “It helps us get to know their personality, medical history, their likes and dislikes, and allows us to focus on developing a personcentered care plan.”

A person-centered care plan takes into account the resident’s dignity, individuality, spirituality, preferences and meaningful engagement. According to Candice Peterson, BSN, RN, director of care, it also includes what’s important to the individual relevant to their treatment and care. These are developed with the resident’s involvement, allowing them to have a voice in their personal care and treatments. For example, an individualized care plan for each resident will include: when and what type of care they’ll receive, medication times, food preferences, personal privacy, personalizing their private space, activities they enjoy, and more. RESIDENT’S ENGAGING ACTIVITIES The care team guides residents through engaging activities focused on the seven dimensions of wellness: physical, emotional, spiritual, intellectual, social, environmental, and vocational. They take a holistic approach to enrich the quality of their life each day.

“We really strive to have our residents know they can do rewarding daily activities and feel fulfilled, so they are accomplishing things and engaging and enjoying their day,” says Gurash. “We know there’s a demand in the market right now and we look forward to getting licensed to open our Memory Care studios. We’re excited to offer our services so families can have a sense of peace and comfort knowing their loved one is being compassionately cared for.” For more information about The Vista, visit www.liveatvista.ca or call 778-247-0780. Exploring the dynamics of relationships in seniors living communities

M

aintaining quality relationships is essential to healthy retirement living. At Ross Place, we get it; the thought of moving into a seniors living community can be a bit daunting due to worries about feeling isolated or lonely. But fear not! Despite the different dynamics of relationships in retirement living, being part of a seniors community is anything but lonely. Let’s dive into how seniors communities can help you feel more connected. MAINTAINING HEALTHY PARTNERSHIPS Many residents move into seniors communities along with their partners. Adjusting to a new home can be overwhelming, but knowing your partner is with you,

experiencing the move together, and navigating a new step of life together is comforting. Moving to a seniors community can even help strengthen your bond! With so many activities and community events, it’s easy to do your own thing, make new friend groups, or participate in activities with your partner each week. BUILDING NEW FRIENDSHIPS Whether you love mall and casino outings, themed happy hours, adapted yoga and exercise classes, live music, or movie nights, seniors communities will have plenty of activities and events to keep you busy. Each community has a recreation team dedicated to designing social

calendars based on their resident wants and needs. These events are a great way to build new friendships while having fun! You will meet people with similar interests and can nourish those friendships at the dining hall, in your free time, and at future events. With plenty of like-minded individuals living down the halls, you’ll have a hard time feeling lonely. NAVIGATING CHANGES IN FAMILY DYNAMICS If you lived with a family member before moving into a seniors community, you may worry that you will feel lonely without their companionship.

Senior driving education vs. assessment M ADVERTISING FEATURE

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2023 | 15

any geriatric researchers presenting at safety conferences agree that education, not testing, is the answer to seniors driving longer and safer.

when it comes to all sorts of things, particularly as it pertains to driving.

Prior to intervention by family, government, medical personnel or police, seniors should take charge of their driving situation.

This is not true.

It is best to prepare for an impending driver assessment well ahead of time. It will relieve the stress of the unknown and the arrival of the dreaded letter. Seniors should be proactive, not reactive,

Many people believe seniors have a higher-than-normal crash frequency.

They do have a much higher chance of injury in a crash because of the frailty brought on by advanced age, particularly those over 75 years of age. Two presenters at a Driving School Association of the Americas conference made a very strong case

that senior-driver harassment by governing bodies exists throughout North America. The most common crashes listed in order of frequency and cause of injury are: •

The left turn at intersections, crossing multiple oncoming lanes of traffic, causes injury for all drivers. This type of crash is often due to declining depth perception in seniors and lack of experience in teens. The fact that oncoming vehicle drivers could change

to the outside through-lane at an intersection, without warning, and be hidden behind the inside lane of two lanes approaching, was also a factor. For both seniors with slower reaction times and teens lack of experience, lack of scanning contributes to this crash.

Rear end crashes are very common. This is caused by all drivers not understanding time and distance for stopping. Understanding the consequences of tailgating is a lesson to be learned by all.

Again, seniors are more likely to experience more injury than a teen. Joan Wallace Driving School offers a free seminar for seniors at 2 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of every month.

W Diving into Hearing Aids I

(or at least dipping a toe)

’ve been an audiologist for quite a while and I’ve heard just about every excuse there is to avoid getting hearing aids, from “I’m too young” to “I’m too old” and everything in between. Some people even think accepting they have a hearing loss is the “beginning of the end”. Because of that, my goal in this article is to make taking the dive into hearing aids a little more inviting. Hearing loss generally happens so slowly that it can go unnoticed (or maybe actively ignored) for years. Bird songs slip away, children start to mumble, and spouses inconsiderately talk while looking out the window! Typically, there is some trigger that results in an individual showing up for a hearing test – an embarrassing comment made in a social setting, a mix-up at work, or a mis-communication straining relations with a loved one. Don’t wait for a total communication breakdown to book a hearing test. If you’ve noticed you’re turning the TV up, asking for repetitions, or getting tired when the demands on your hearing are high, it’s time to see an audiologist. At Hear Inc., we’ll review your history, complete a thorough evaluation of your hearing, review the findings with you and make recommendations for next steps. Recommendations might include ways to conserve the hearing you have left, further testing if findings are atypical, or a physician referral if a condition exists that may be medically treatable. If it’s determined your hearing has deteriorated to the point that hearing aids are recommended, appropriate options will be demonstrated in our virtual listening environments while features and benefits pertaining to your lifestyle, hearing loss, budget and cosmetic preferences are discussed. From there, you may choose to proceed with a 90 day hearing aid trial period. An appointment will be arranged to set up your chosen hearing aids and instruct you on their use and care. Over the next 90 days, you will return to the clinic a few times to monitor your

progress and make any necessary adjustments or modifications. At the end of the trial, you decide if you want to keep the hearing aids, try something else, or return them and get the money paid for the hearing aids back – no strings attached. Most people comment on how easily they were able to integrate the hearing aids into their daily life and how surprised they are by the comfort and sound quality of the hearing aids. Comments like “I should have done this sooner” are common! Getting a hearing test isn’t the beginning of the end. It’s a chance to test the water so you can make an informed decision about the next steps. And if you’re ready, take the dive into hearing aids. We’ll be there with you. Call 778-426-4876 to book your hearing test with one of our kind, knowledgeable and noncommissioned audiologist. hat is the greatest gift you give your senior loved one this year? Here’s a hint: it’s not something you can wrap up and place under a tree. The greatest gift you give could be the conversation you have over tea and shortbread; an intentional conversation about the supports that will enable your loved one to continue living independently in the comfort of their own home.

INDEPENDENCE IS A GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING. If your loved one wishes to remain in their own home, the details are best not left to chance. Between busy family, social and travel schedules, it can be a rare event for siblings to gather together in one place. If this Christmas season provides an opportunity to do so, take full advantage. Plan a family meeting - in honour of the one who made it all possible to be together in the first place! WHAT GETS PLANNED GETS DONE Don’t leave it to chance. This conversation isn’t just going to magically happen, especially if multiple siblings are involved. Arrange a time and write on the calendar. PLAN FOR SUCCESS The more information you have

gathered, the more buy-in you will have from family members. Providing each of your family members with a little mental and emotional runway will also help set the stage for a positive experience. Prepare your senior loved one for the meeting by explaining your motives and desire to honour their wishes. Be clear that your goal is to empower, not control. Remember, this is not a one-shot deal. This conversation will be the first of many. Move slowly if necessary, but do commit to starting the journey. CREATE SPACE FOR EMOTION Grief over the recent loss of a loved one, the challenging realities of a sibling who lives far away, or discouragement over diminishing physical abilities - each of these requires gentleness and space to process. Be cautious not to rush through the sadness or minimize the loss. More than checking items off a to-do list, taking time to provide emotional support will establish trust and help you better understand your loved one’s daily challenges. ASK AN EXPERT Not sure where to start? Don’t hesitate to ask a professional.

Schedule a call with a local home care provider and explain your situation. Even if you do not require in-home assistance at this time, learning about available services will provide you with invaluable peace of mind. Concerned your loved one may be resistant to receiving needed in-home assistance? A professional care planner can offer proven strategies to guide your conversation. GET SUPPORT - FOR YOURSELF You don’t need to become an “agein-place” expert. You don’t need to have all the answers to every challenge your loved one may be facing. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Speaking with a home care professional before reaching out to siblings can help you avoid common pitfalls, set up your family meeting for success and help ensure your loved one receives the best chance to enjoy the gift of independence through aging-in-place.

Upgrade your bathroom with toilet tech innovation ADVERTORIAL

TOTO reinvents toilet and bidet seats for modern comfort and hygiene

A

toilet is not just a toilet anymore. Japanese multinational toilet manufacturer, TOTO, takes true luxury for your behind and exposes the coolest technology in bathroom features, where comfort, health and functionality take a front seat. TOTO has reinvented the humble toilet seat as a warm water personal cleansing system. Particularly popular in Japan, WASHLET® smart toilets and electric bidet seats are fast becoming more commonplace in North America. Every model is the entire package of design, technology and performance. “TOTO is synonymous with superior innovation,” says Lacey Sheardown, director of marketing & communications with Splashes Bath & Kitchen in Victoria, B.C. “They’ve been a leader in the industry since the early ‘80s, and are the largest toilet manufacturer in the world.” With a touch of a button, the WASHLET allows you to experience a blissfully heated seat, soothing, aerated water to clean your nethers, and warm air for gentle drying, leaving you feeling hygienic and refreshed. Consider “you left the lid up” squabbles a thing of the past with non-slamming SoftClose. Enjoy self-cleaning toilet bowl technology, and an automatic air deodorizer. And if all that’s not incentive enough, your days of worrying about running out of toilet paper are over. Not to mention—you’re saving trees. It’s ecology-minded luxury. WASHLET’S POPULARITY AND NEOREST SMART TOILETS People often say using a WASHLET is life-changing. “I experienced one recently at a Vancouver hotel,” reveals Sheardown. “I was a little nervous to try it, concerned the water would be cold and shocking, but it’s prewarmed and was very comfortable.” “Everyone says that once you try a WASHLET or own one, you’ll be hard-pressed to use a regular toilet seat. They’re right. It’s on my Christmas list this year for my husband—and me!” “The WASHLET is a separate seat and fits most North American toilets,” she adds. “It’s easy to install and is effortlessly integrated into your bathroom; however, because it’s electric, you’ll require an outlet close by.” It’s no surprise the WASHLET is the world’s most popular electronic toilet seat bidet, with 60 million sold worldwide since 1980. WASHLET has features such as: • a heated seat • a warm air dryer with five variable settings • adjustable front and rear warm water washing • a remote control • an illuminated touch pad • a two-user memory to save preferred settings • ambient night light These are just a few benefits of the TOTO WASHLET C5 with PREMIST and EWATER+ wand cleaning, one of their most popular models. Splashes carries three NEOREST® smart bidet toilets, with all the features of the WASHLET personal cleansing system built in. They’re the avant-garde powerhouse line of high-luxe smart bidet toilets, with a revolutionary electronic sequential valve system that eliminates the need for a tank above the bowl. “NEOREST toilets are beautifully designed, with some curve, so they’re meant for comfort,” says Sheardown. “It’s like a minimalist piece of art in your bathroom—

they’re just stunning.” You can expect the benefit of a powerful but quiet TORNADO FLUSH®, with engineered nozzles and cyclonic flush action. They reduce water use by 35 per cent with one-gallon per flush (versus conventional 1.6 gallon per flush). “TOTO is a great consideration for anyone who’s looking to upgrade their bathroom, especially if they want to integrate technology,” says Sheardown. “For beauty, function, comfort and cleanliness, it’s just the perfect combination of aesthetics and functionality.” Consult a Splashes Bath & Kitchen expert to learn more about the TOTO toilet and WASHLET collections for WASHLET C2 Electronic Bidet Toilet Seat. your needs. It is important to remember when you and your family are faced with a loss, you are not alone. Your community will be there to support you and what is sometimes overlooked, is the members of the community are also in need of support. They want to extend their condolences, share their stories of what your loved one meant to them and also take the unscheduled time to attend a funeral, celebration or gathering to show their support in person, when words can sometimes not seem enough. Community support and participation is as important in death as it is in all other major life events

One example of how a funeral service can facilitate memories and sharing, was hearing a story of how a coffee shop barista knew the departed. He served him his coffee every morning… and a muffin. However, the muffin was never for himself, he would give the muffin to a person living on the street outside the coffee shop. He would take a few minutes, exchange some pleasantries and wish him a good day. He’d end the interaction with; “see you tomorrow!” and he would. Everyday he would get his coffee, buy a muffin for this less fortunate community member, and visit with him. As his friend, as a fellow human being, and for nothing else except to be nice. This was not known by the family and they were so touched to hear this act of kindness was done by their loved one each day, without the need for praise, acknowledgment or anyone even knowing. They would have never known this amazing story, if it was not for the gathering and opportunity for the barista to share. There is strength in numbers, and when you lose someone you love, accepting community support may just be the strength that you need. You are not alone. Sands Funeral Chapel of Victoria has proudly been serving our community since 1912. We are here to guide and support you through your loss.

As we age and begin to lose our mobility and sense of balance, bathing can not only become difficult but also a cause of additional stress and anxiety. Fear of falling and a fear of not being able to get out of the tub are two of the most common occurrences with many of our seniors today. Walk-in tubs have become extremely popular in the last decade and estimates show that people who go ahead and install a walk-in tub in their homes today, will be able to live independently for an additional five years. Walk-in tubs are exactly what the name implies, tubs that have large doors that open, and you simply walk in and sit down on a 17-inch-high seat. You close and lock the door and the tub fills rapidly while you are sitting comfortably and safely inside. All the taps and controls are easily accessible at your fingertips. Once you are done your bath, tum the dial and the tub quickly drains and you simply open the door and walk out of the tub. The various models all have numerous grab bars and nonslip surfaces making getting in and out worry free. Walkin tubs are designed for an aging population who desire to remain

independent for many years to come. Manufacturers have optional tub designs accommodating every shape and size of person and bathroom. There is a tub size that will fit in the space where your existing tub or shower is. Walk-in tubs can be as basic as a soaker tub to as deluxe as your own personal spa. Offering numerous options such as heated back, multispeed warm air jets, water jets, ozone, light therapy, aromatherapy, and more. The benefits of a walk-in tub are numerous. Many people crave being able to confidently have a bath again and find relief by just soaking in a warm tub. Owners say they believe they sleep better after a soothing bath. The warm air or water jets give a deep massage and help to stimulate circulation, thus carrying additional healing oxygen throughout the body to the hands and feet. This has shown positive results increasing mobility and helping to relieve the pain and symptoms of such conditions as arthritis, chronic back pain, fibromyalgia, diabetic and peripheral neuropathy, as well as various other acute and chronic conditions. The Canadian Government website

Perhaps, one of the best decisions I’ve made is when I decided to go ahead and put a walkin tub in my house. I no longer have a fear of falling and this will help me live in my home for many more years to come.” Jean S.

states that 1 in 4 seniors fall every year, and 25% of these falls are serious, leaving the victims permanently disabled and bedridden. A large

percentage of these falls take place in the bathroom. Aside from all the pain and suffering it also ends up costing the Canadian medical system two

billion dollars annually. Therefore, the British Columbia and Federal Governments are helping many people who decide to purchase a walk-in tub now. The help comes in the forms of a tax credit, a Provincial Sales Tax waiver, and in certain qualifying cases a $9,000.00 Government Grant. As we all age and the years fly by, many seniors are faced with the reality that taking proactive steps today and deciding to retrofit their homes with a walk-in tub is one of the best investments they can make to help them age in place, comfortably and independently in the home they love. g Sponsored content provided by Island Walk-in Tubs.

mid the wars, countless Canadian soldiers and nurses displayed extraordinary bravery and unwavering dedication, putting their lives on the line for our country. Many of these individuals returned home bearing the profound physical and emotional scars of war, having lost limbs in the line of duty. Their experiences as amputees not only shaped their own lives but, as members of The War Amps of Canada, they left a lasting legacy on generations of amputees to come. During the First World War, Madeleine Jaffray (1889-1972), served as a nurse in a military hospital near Bordeaux, France. The hospital where she was working was bombarded by German aviators, and she was wounded in the foot by a piece of shrapnel from one of the bombs. Her injury led to an amputation, making her Canada’s only female war amputee of the First World War. It was amputees like Jaffray who welcomed the new contingent of amputee veterans following the Second World War, sharing with them all that they had learned. One of these was Mike Krulicki (1925-2020), who was just a teenager when he volunteered for service in the Second World War. He enlisted with the Irish Regiment of Canada, and in 1944, while fighting in the Italian Campaign

as part of the attack on the Gothic Line, he stepped on a landmine and lost his right leg below the knee. Another veteran was Arthur Johnson (1929-2006), who served with the Canadian Army Special Force as a mortar man with the Royal Canadian Regiment and who joined 26,000 other Canadians in the fight for the freedom of South Korea. In August 1952, he found himself on Hill 355 near Seoul in the midst of intense enemy shelling. A mortar landed close by, wounding him and resulting in the loss of his right leg above the knee and damage to his right arm. United by the common bond of amputation, amputees from the First World War, along with those from the Second World War and Korean War, were instrumental in pushing for advancements in prosthetic technology, confronting the stigma of disability, advocating for fair pensions for veterans and providing much-needed support to each other. Rob Larman, a Senior Advisor at The War Amps and a leg amputee himself, said, “These honorable individuals contributed their time to various activities of the Association and shared their experiences as amputees with others, including modern-day veterans and children. On Remembrance Day especially, but also throughout the year, we pay tribute to the sacrifice and service of all those who served and continue to serve.”
