BEST AC/HEATING SERVICE and BEST PLUMBER

M and M Heating & Air Conditioning

110 Brown Cir., Longmont, (720) 366-1512, mandmhvac.com

Not all business owners agree about how to run a business—from providing employee training to making time to pay face-to-face visits to customers. “I go to the customer’s home to supervise the job from beginning to end, and I think our customers really appreciate that,” says Owner, Eric Meiers. To go the extra mile, he even requires technicians to wear booty covers over their shoes while working in customers’ homes. Winning the Best Plumber category came as somewhat of a surprise, for Meiers. That’s because, while he started his business in 1998, he only recently added plumbing to the list of service offerings—two years ago to be exact. Whether it’s a leaky toilet, backed up drains or the garbage disposal bit the dust, M and M Heating & Air Conditioning technicians are eager to help with service and repairs. “To get these two awards is extremely humbling. I’m so proud. Thank you,” says Owner Eric Meiers.

Not only does Grease Monkey consistently have the best oil change in town, they go above and beyond by servicing belts, brakes, filters, transmissions…preventative maintenance services that will keep your car on the road. BEST DANCE/GYMNASTIC STUDIO and BEST DAY CAMP

Production Company Dance Centre

1401 Ken Pratt Blvd., Ste. 1, Longmont, (303) 682-8842, productioncompanydance.com

Besides learning how to perfect their pirouettes and pliés, dancers who practice at Production Company Dance Centre learn more than a few dance steps. These young dancers also learn the importance of sharing their fancy footwork outside of the walls of the studio. From impromptu flash mobs to performing at nursing homes, the dancers like giving back to community. Owner Stephanie Odenbach said it’s always been her dream to instill a love for the arts in other people. That’s why she regularly encourages her dancers to share their gifts and talents with the community. And many of the kids who walk into her studio tell her it’s their second home—a place they look forward to after school’s out for the day. Thrilled to win Best Dance Studio and Best Day Camp, Odenbach expressed feelings of gratitude to have won both categories. “Some of our competitors have been in business for 20 or 30 years, so I’m very grateful for the award,” she says. Patients consistently remark that “the doctors personalize the care and that they feel heard,” says Office Manager, Jamie Quisumbing. BEST FUNERAL HOME SERVICE PROVIDER

Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory

The Ahlberg family has been providing the Longmont community with a vital service for more than 50 years. Sensitive to the fact that funeral arrangements are a delicate matter, they strive to make the experience as smooth as possible. When asked about his family’s core values with regard to the business, Torre Ahlberg, Communications Director, said, “Treating people the right way— with respect.” He and the rest of the staff understand their clients are going through a difficult time. Their goal, in his words, is to “relieve that burden from them and allow them to celebrate life.” Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory can assist with all arrangements, including selection of the casket or cremation urn, burial arrangements, the memorial service, flowers and even the presider. Studio Boom

Airborne Gymnastics & Dance

Perhaps the reason for Airborne Gymnastics & Dance’s continued popularity is the variety of their offerings. Their gymnastics program has something for every age and ability, including adults. For 25 years their philosophy of success has been simple—make it work for everyone. “My goal is to serve the entire Longmont community, not just the gifted few athletes who can compete at the national level,” says owner, Pam Turner. “Our gymnastics program has a large educational component- most of our students don’t have competitive aspirations.” They do have competitive teams, though—four athletes just returned from the Junior Olympic National Championships, placing the highest of any Colorado club. Airborne has also developed separate areas of focus, which allows students to easily concentrate specifically on their interest. The dance program is geared toward development, not “Dance Moms” style competition.

Busy is good. Just ask Brandi Abernathy, coowner of Studio Boom salon. When customers you’ve had for all of your 12 years keep coming back and new ones come in all the time, that is definitely a good kind of busy. Studio Boom caters to all of their clients by offering the best in styling products, airbrush tanning, lash extensions, skin care and nails. But services are just services if the love of the job isn’t there. A close-knit and dedicated family of stylists is the root of what makes Studio Boom buzz. “Our amazing, amazing stylists work so hard. They are constantly attending classes, learning and teaching each other to keep us on top of our game,”Brandi says. “I think our customers feel the “togetherness” in our team, and it feels good.”

UCHealth Longmont Clinic

1925 Mountain View Ave., Longmont, (303) 776-1234, longmontclinic.com

As one of the first medical clinics of its kind in the state of Colorado, UCHealth Longmont Clinic has a rich history of caring for generations of families in Longmont and the St. Vrain Valley. The 110-year tradition that began with doctors practicing medicine in a horse drawn carriage has evolved to serving the community with the most advanced medical specialists and surgeons. In 2015, the clinic began a new chapter in its history as UCHealth Longmont Clinic – opening new doors to a vast network of specialists, researchers and pioneers in medicine. While the name is slightly different, the clinic’s legacy of outstanding care, compassion and commitment to the community will never change, said Deborah Chandler, the CEO of UCHealth’s Colorado Health Medical Group. “It is certainly an honor to be recognized by the community as the best health/medical facility for the third consecutive year. This honor is a testament to the commitment of our physicians, nurses and staff to provide extraordinary care to every patient, every day,” Chandler said. Second: Longmont United Hospital,

Gilgren is one of the board certified audiologists on staff, and a big part of what distinguishes Hearing Rehab Center. It’s rare, but Dr. Gilgren couldn’t see having it any other way. It’s just one more way to take better care of people and that is the motivation at HRC. “Our mission is to help people hear better,” she explains. HRC has been dedicated to helping Colorado hear better for 20 years now. They offer a wide range of services, working with all hearing aid manufacturers and focusing on the hardware as well as education, both for clients and family members. Well maintained landscaping speaks volumes for your home or business. For a hand in your back (or front) yard, your business or your commercial complex, Ward’s Lawn Service has the tools, the expertise and the right people to get the job done. Ward’s has grown exponentially since they cut their first blade of grass 17 years ago, and particularly over the last 4 years, but the business retains a “small company” work ethic. They work with the same level of care regardless of the size of the job. Safety manager Deb Goss says, “We have had a loyal customer base since 1999. Rhythm on the River

At 21 years strong and a consistent winner of this award, it’s obvious that Longmont loves this festival. But that doesn’t mean things can’t change— look for a shake up at this year’s Rhythm on the River. First up? The timing. The whole shebang is moving to evening hours. The events you’ve always loved will now glow in the dark, including the 5K run. The goal of the event hasn’t changed either. “Celebrating the arts, entertainment and environment is the event’s mission, while having a great time!” says Sue Jacobson, the event director for Rhythm on the River. This year’s event takes place July 8-9 in Roger’s Grove and as always, people can expect the best in food, as well as concerts and family friendly activities. New this year: a “craft and sip” area in the beer garden for those who want to get their hands a little dirty while sipping on suds. Everyone has their favorite part of Rhythm on the River. Wibby Brewing

Taylor Moving and Storage

For close to 20 years, this locally owned moving company has won accolades all over the Front Range. A commitment to service like theirs doesn’t go unnoticed— they live to take the stress out of your move. Whether you need trucks and supplies for a Do-It-Yourself job, or you want the full service door-to-door treatment, Taylor Moving and Storage is there for every step. Suppose you have a layover between homes — Taylor Moving also offers a 15,000-square-foot climate-controlled, ADT-secured storage facility for its loyal Longmont customers. With deep consideration for the environment, they recently upgraded to lower-emission trucks. They also recycle packing materials and reuse boxes whenever possible.

Before customers at Wibby Brewing sipped suds and listened to local bands on the weekends, the 8300 square foot space was home to the Butterball Turkey Truck Maintenance Facility. Now, instead of loud sounds coming from power tools grinding away at diesel engines, laughter and music echo within these walls. The brewery opened its doors last September—thanks to a successful business deal orchestrated by owners Ted Risk and Ryan Wibby, who expressed their appreciation to The City of Longmont, the Longmont Downtown Development Authority, and readers, of course. Why the dynamic duo chose Longmont to fulfill their brewing dream is anyone’s guess. But when it’s right, it’s right. “It just felt like something special was happening here,” says Risk.

Happy Hounds Dog Care Center

Five time award winners, Happy Hounds Dog Care Center has happily served Longmont’s best friends since 2008, offering boarding, daycare, and professional grooming in their deluxe facility. The team is never far away, providing interaction and supervision over play times. Boarding is available in a limited number of suites or crates, and onsite overnight supervision is included, so your doggie will never be lonely. In the daycare, adult pooches get the chance to enhance their existing social skills and puppies learn about dog-to-dog greetings, appropriate vs. inappropriate play, and how to interact with other dogs and multiple staff members. Professional grooming services are the equivalent of the best salon in town! Services from ear cleaning and nail trimming to full baths, de-shedding treatments and professional haircuts make even the dirtiest dog gleam. Owners, Brian and Olivia Neill, are dog lovers at heart and have spared nothing in creating the area’s best dog care center. “Our customers appreciate the personal side of what we do,” says Olivia. “Our staff members go the extra mile, doing small things that show real care for both the dogs and their owners. It’s a true honor to us that our customers would take the time to vote for us five years in a row. This year is particularly special to us because we also won in the grooming category!

Chris Lawrence, owner of Fox Creek Fitness says he wants to make sure his customers never feel like they get lost in the crowd—something that easily happens in a gym environment. That’s why he invites members to get active outside the workout studio. Whether he chaperones a group hike or they spend a day on the lake with a sculling team, Lawrence knows how to personalize the workout experience. Watching people transform is the best part for Lawrence. “The most rewarding part, is when people feel like they have no athleticism and cannot do a single push-up, to knocking out 10 push-ups after several months of training.” Second: Longmont Recreation Center, 310 Quail Rd., Longmont, (303) 774-4800 ci.longmont.co.us/rec/gen/lrc.htm

BEST PLACE TO HIKE, JOG OR BIKE

McIntosh Lake

It’s a beautiful Colorado afternoon and you want to get outside. You don’t want to go too far, but you want to see the mountains. You want some “wild space” but the option to bring a snack and lay out on the grass sounds really tempting. Or maybe you want to bike, or canoe, or fish. You can do all of those things and more at McIntosh Lake. It’s no real wonder that it has been voted Longmont’s Best Spot to Jog, Bike, Walk or Hike. Not only do the surrounding miles of trails offer commanding views and peaceful lake serenity, they also connect to Dawson Park, Flanders Park and Boulder County’s Lohr Open Space, giving plenty of opportunity to hop off the trail for more organized recreation such as tennis, basketball, or volleyball. She has passed on that love of swimming by teaching Longmont kids through both private lessons and The City of Longmont. Why swimming? “Swimming has been instrumental in my striving to become the best I could be!” Fell says. “Coaching has been even more fulfilling. The best part was seeing their faces once they got a specific time in a race or learned a new stroke.” Being an inspiration and guide to the next generation of young swimmers has been a reward all its own, but being recognized for it is something special to Fell. She explains, “I am so happy that the families I have coached and worked with view me in this aspect! I feel incredibly honored! I was never quite sure what I wanted to study in college or what I wanted to be when I grew up; but coaching has allowed me to find my passion and has given my life some direction. When little kitten-face isn’t feeling well or poochie seems too lethargic, it usually means a trip to the vet—if you can afford it. At Cambridge Animal Hospital, Dr. Natalie Durbin works hard to keep pet care prices affordable. She must be doing something right because people consistently let her know they appreciate her prices. Plus, she builds some flexibility to the appointment book for emergencies. She also gives back to the community by working with local animal rescues. That means her staff nurses those furry little ones back to health so they’re more adoptable. “We’re so honored and thankful for the award. Wing Shack

1133 Francis St., Longmont, (303) 834-8066, facebook.com/pages/Wing-Shack-Longmont

Owners Debbie and Mike Blume know it’s not easy to win the Best American Restaurant category, but they work hard, and the customers know it. Seven day work weeks don’t slow this couple from making sure each customer is happy—this family owned and operated business puts their heart and soul into the food. What sets them apart? Mike Blume explains, “We deliver,” something most restaurants can’t or won’t do. And it’s just three bucks—within (the) local area. Blume knows customers are busy—especially when they come in on a time crunched lunch hour. That’s why they also offer “call ahead lunches,” something he says saves people their precious time. “Just place your order and it’s ready when you arrive,” says Blume. Whether medium or well done, customers rave about these juicy flavorful burgers, says Blume. It’s all in that homemade secret spice—but don’t expect Blume to disclose it! Add that toasted brioche bun and your mouth finds instant bliss. Watch for three favorite burg-

ers to make their comeback to the menu soon. With 14 different homemade sauces and three dry rubs, what’s not to love about these crispy mouth-watering wings of deliciousness? Top picks include Spicy Garlic, Buffalo Ranch and Traditional Hot Sauce.

Pride plays a huge role in the Samples World Bistro philosophy. “We take great pride in crafting our ingredients from scratch,” says Owner Mark Sample. “The basis behind our food is, when we drop it at the table, we want to be as proud of it as possible.” Samples World Bistro not only boasts Longmont’s best appetizers, but also the world’s largest beer tasting tray - The Beerquator. During happy hour, the 20-beer sampler costs $35, but there is a bargain for beer experts. “If you can correctly tell me where I put every beer on the tray, you get it for free,” Sample says. “No one has done it yet.” Perhaps you could be the first! What makes Einstein Bros. different from other bagel shops? They might have a corporate upbringing, but General Manager Michelle Tafoya says they work hard to bring out that warm, friendly atmosphere. “We try to make customers feel like they are at home,” she says. “We know most of our customers by name.” Since most customers are headed to work—they have little time to spare. That’s why Tafoya says it’s important to run an efficient operation where customers can grab and go. Staff sometimes process orders quicker than customers place orders, she says. Wibby Brewing

The Rib House

The Rib House is recognized as the best barbecue in Longmont and beyond. “People come to our restaurant from literally all over the world,” says Owner Tracy Webb. “I have regular customers that don’t live in this country.” Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Tracy and his wife, Merry Ann, opened The Rib House in 2001. Neither had any restaurant experience, but within two months they had their first mention in a national magazine. “It’s truly a cinderella story,” Webb says. “ It started out as a little maand-pop thing and grew into quite a huge operation.”

With its modern industrial feel, the owners of Wibby Brewing just knew they had found the right space to create the right vibe for their brew-happy customers. Although it’s a behemoth at 8300 square feet, owners Ted Risk and Ryan Wibby said, “It’s something we can grow into and add more fermenters.” They started with three 30 barrel fermenters and six 30 barrel horizontal laggering tanks. They plan to bring in two more 30 barrel fermenters, says Risk. What’s so unique about this brewery, you ask? All they do is lager—which is not the easiest of brew to master. Top three sellers include Light Shine Helles, Wibby IPL, and the seasonal fave, Wibtoberfest, something to watch for next fall. They keep about nine brews on tap—that way you just might get hooked on a lager that flows at Wibby Brewing. Also on tap—local bands during weekends— perfect for your night out!

A casual family restaurant environment and breakfast, lunch and dinner options with a taste of Mexico that is “authentic, affordable and always fresh,” said Craig Morales, co-owner of Santiago’s with his wife Annette.“We believe we only have one chance to impress a customer,” Craig said. In the A.M., breakfast burritos come filled with a different meat each weekday, with a chef’s choice on Saturday. For the afternoon crowd, Craig said popular deluxe burritos like the beef and bean, and steak are “good for afternoon or nighttime.” Though the burritos can be served plain, Craig said customers often return for the green chile. Available in hot, mild or half-and-half, it’s served inside or smothered on top of all burritos. The deluxe choice takes the smothered option and adds lettuce, cheese and tomato on top. Ziggi’s Coffee House

Georgia boys BBQ Company

When it comes to good BBQ—there’s no need to rush. Co-owners Matt Alexander and Nick Reckinger say it’s all about slow cooking to perfection. Wondering why it tastes so good? It starts with authentic recipes from mom’s recipe box—Donna Alexander. It also helps when pit masters have some know-how about amping up the flavor. Choice cuts of brisket and premium spices send your taste buds into a flavor revolution. Not sure what to order? Alexander says the super juicy “burnt ends,” brisket never lasts long—so order ‘em early or opt for a tangy slab of finger lickin’ ribs. Hats off to the Carbon Valley location where southern hospitality and friendly conversation flows like icy beers on a hot day. There you’ll find daily specials, a full service bar and soup and salad assortments. And you won’t want to miss the upcoming Blues, Brews, and BBQ Festival in August. “This will be our third year hosting the festival and we’re hoping to have nearly 50 local breweries join,” says Alexander. Coffee is a given, but at Ziggi’s, they’re all about the people. With four current locations serving Longmont – Ziggi’s brings not only quality coffees, teas and food to Longmont but values like sustainability and reuse. Stemming from existing passion for supporting a variety of local communities, Ziggi’s Coffee plans to expand its business by franchising double-sided drive-throughs, like the South Main and Hover Street locations in Longmont, this year. “We understand life gets hectic and more people are on-the-go these days,” said Brandon Knudson, “which is why we want to be there for them by expanding our service in a way that is as fast, efficient and convenient as possible, while still adhering to our core values, such as providing excellent customer service and building connections with the local communities we are a part of.” La Vita Bella Coffeehouse, 475 Main St, Longmont, (720) 204-6298 longmontcoffee.com

What could possibly be better than a Mexican restaurant? How about a bright pink food truck serving authentic Mexican food on wheels? Well, Comida—the food truck—makes the authentic Mexican

Your Butcher, Frank is much more than a butcher. Sandwiches piled high with hearty, healthy ingredients on natural bread are the specialty at Your Butcher, Frank. Variety is at the core of their service. “We have a huge selection, not just the basic 10 meats and cheeses,” said owner Ron Lamb. “There are about 60 different items customers can choose from.” Sandwiches at Your Butcher, Frank incorporate multiple high-end products, from low-salt, MSG-free meat to locally baked bread. And if it’s overwhelming, the friendly staff can help with questions on what to order. “All of our employees are educated on what we carry,” Ron said, “and we like to educate the customer about what they’re buying.” Second: Subworks Deli, 1104 Francis St., Longmont, (303) 774-7000

The Comida truck is big enough to cook all the menu items on-site. Chipotle Mexican Grill Longmont Locations: 1100 Ken Pratt Blvd. Unit B, (303) 651-6763 // 1708 Main St., (303) 485-6369 // chipotle.com

Chipotle, opened in 1993, prides itself on offering food that’s made fast, but defying other stereotypes of “fast food.” The chain is dedicated to high-quality ingredients, as shown through their “Food with Integrity” commitment, says their website. They source from farms as often as possible, and require that their meat comes from pasture-raised animals not treated with synthetic hormones. Chipotle furthers these beliefs with the Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds sustainable agriculture initiatives. Both Longmont Chipotle locations are open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and offer catering options. Second: Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, 2250 Main St., Longmont

After 11 years of being the voted the best restaurant, O’Shays is still keeping things fresh. “We’re constantly tweaking the menu,” says owner, Mike Shea. Seasonal favorites like their Maine lobster and crab rolls and new additions like falafel and tzatziki are unique offerings in town, not to be missed. And desserts are still created in-house by Shea’s wife, Nania. Tweaking the menu doesn’t stop with food. Their cocktails, wines and beers change with the seasons. “I like wine myself,” says Shea, “so I pick wines by the season. We have an extensive—not expensive—by-the glass menu.” But let’s not forget beer and cocktails. Summery housemade Sangria and mojitos are perfect for happy hours on their patio. Stop by from 4 to 6:30 on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturdays to try them for yourself. Throughout the years, the Shea’s have remained grateful. “We appreciate those customers that have been coming since the day we opened and the new ones that come in every day,” says Shea.

With red-and-white checkered tablecloths, linen napkins, flowers on tables and carpeted floors to reduce noise, and a menu filled with items like lasagna and spaghetti and meatballs, Pinocchios strives to offer a “good independent place to go” for traditional Italian in Longmont, said Annie Vick, owner. Gluten-free and vegan options also bring a unique flair to the restaurant, alongside a specialty menu with a variety of lighter items. “We serve great food focusing on getting to know guests,” Vick said. Their menu is served all day long, all desserts are homemade, and the private east room is ideal for banquets and overflow. “We have a cozy and comfortable atmosphere so people can relax,” Vick said. “It is not in our scenario to rush people out.” Second:

Subworks Deli

Subworks Deli has been serving the best subs in Longmont for over 11 years, that much is clear, but that doesn’t mean they let their success ride on business as usual. New to the already inventive menu: Mac ‘N Cheese Subs— macaroni noodles smothered in four cheeses then topped with Bacon, BBQ Pulled Pork or Buffalo Chicken. Change is often difficult, but at Subworks it’s welcome. A larger floorplan has been in the “works” for awhile and it’s finally a reality. Get the high quality that you know, with a little more elbow room. “We are so honored to be chosen Best Sub for the seventh time and are so blessed to be selected Best Lunch in a town with as many great options as Longmont has. We are so excited to share our NEW 49 seat dining room with all of our guests and neighbors. Finally, you get to enjoy the food you always loved, with the service you have come to expect only now in the sub shop you always deserved! From our family to yours, thank you for your love and support. We look forward to being a part of this great community for many years to come.” says owner, Tim Test. Oven-baked subs, Heart-warming service... That’s how my Subworks!

At 3 Margaritas, the original margarita is always made from scratch, never from mixes, and includes fresh lime juice, Cointreau, and the patron’s choice of tequila. According to Manager Juan Rodriguez, in addition to its margaritas, the restaurant is also known for “consistent quality and presentable plates. I learned from a famous chef years ago that people eat with their eyes, and I believe that is true,” he said. Using the highest quality ingredients in their salsas, meats and other dishes, 3 Margaritas serves food in a friendly atmosphere that Rodriguez says “makes it feel like home.” On Monday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m., 3 Margaritas features a mariachi band. “Customers love it,” Rodriguez said. Tuesday is Seniors’ Day with specials. And in appreciation of the two awards they have won, the restaurant will offer some free margaritas. “When you combine all these things… location is important, but it’s also important to be consistent with food and service and the way you treat customers. That’s all you need.”

The Roost

Sean Gafner, Executive Chef and Owner of The Roost, spent 18 years in the fine dining industry in California before moving to Longmont and opening The Roost last year. This fine dining style in a casual setting is what sets The Roost apart from other restaurants. “In fine dining, the most important thing is just finding great product and then really simply preparing it,” he says. “People like to eat food that is fresh and makes you feel great for eating it.” Dan Lance, Gafner’s best friend and business partner, found the location for The Roost before Gafner moved to Longmont. The rooftop patio and bar were major sellers for the partners, as well as the building’s location on Main Street. “We wanted to stay in downtown Longmont because we just love the culture down here,” Gafner says. “This is the number one town where we would want to open a restaurant. It’s really art-forward and food-forward and it has rich culture that just make the people something special.”

Knowing what you put in is the best way to know what you’ll get out. “At Rosalee’s Pizzeria, we shred and grate our cheeses by hand, make our sauce from high quality tomatoes, and grind and season our pork sausage in house,” says Co-owner, James Ross. Then, each pie is finished with a signature “slight char.” You’ll taste the handcrafted love in every slice. It’s pizza, this stuff is important! Equally as important is great ambiance. “At Rosalee’s, we focus on creating a positive, energetic vibe, while delivering quality food and attentive service,” Ross says. In addition to over 240 wines by the bottle and 32 wines by the glass, Bin 46 has a long list of craft cocktails and craft beer. Each month, the wine bar hosts wine dinners with winemakers from all over the world. In honor of their one-year anniversary, Bin 46 will be hosting an Italian wine dinner and a craft beer dinner in June. Campbell appreciates the opportunity to work in a close-knit town like Longmont. “It’s very community focused in Longmont and our patrons really want to see all the small businesses succeed,” she says.

2331 Clover Basin Dr., Longmont, (720) 652-9229, redrobin.com

1134 Francis St., Longmont, (303) 776-7575

Got a kid (or adult) who’s a fussy eater? Red Robin makes it easy to satisfy just about everyone. First—burgers. All of Red Robin’s burgers are customizable to taste, dietary needs and preferences of even finicky eaters. You can even customize your side item by swapping out the fries for a salad, melon, steamed broccoli, or other choices. Not a beef eater? Red Robin also serves turkey patties, veggie burgers and chicken or fish sandwiches made to satisfy. All the typical kids’ favorites are on the menu too: grilled cheese bites, mac ‘n cheese, corn dogs, pizza, chicken fingers, and old-fashioned lemonade. And noise is never an issue at Red Robin, they welcome children at any volume.

Loaf & Ladle has been family owned and operated in Longmont for more than 25 years. Lance and Jackie Thorne have kept their Cajun-French heritage ever-present with infusions of recipes from generations past. The Loaf & Ladle menu has an abundance of southern, Cajun and familial influences. Finding the perfect lunch combination is easy. They offer three to four soup options each day from a list of 20 family soup recipes, and a variety of salads such as sesame Thai, cashew chicken and traditional Caesar salad. “If you’re lucky, you’ll catch my Cajun soup day, when I’ll make something a bit more downsouth delicious,” he says. BEST SUSHI and BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT and BEST ASIAN RESTAURANT

Sushi Hana

1950 Main St., Longmont, (303) 682-9297, royalwoklongmont.com

Open for 11 years, Sushi Hana gives customers “good, consistent quality,” said owner Andrew Sun. When asked what customers love about his restaurant, Sun said, “Freshness, ambience, cleanliness and our friendly service. We have been here a long time, giving the same authentic Japanese touch.” As a long-time Main Street staple, Sun says his business is mostly repeat customers. “We have a lot of regulars,” he says. “Most of the people, I know them by name.” Sun is strict about what he offers on his menu. “What I don’t know extremely well, I won’t do it,” he says. “Why have a huge menu if you can’t do it perfectly?” All fish is cold-water fish from around the world, with such seasonal offerings as white salmon, bluefin, wolf fish, giant clam, razor clam and codfish sperm. All condiments are served cold on ice, adding to the flavor, Sun said. Sushi Hana’s Master Sushi Chefs are highly trained in the art of sushi preparation, and use quality ingredients and high-grade fish daily in the dishes they prepare. Sushi Hana offers a variety of dishes outside of sushi, included Japanese ramen noodles, sesame chicken, mango shrimp, and papaya salad.

BEST ART GALLERY

Firehouse Art Center

667 4th Ave., Longmont, (303) 651-2787, firehouseart.org

Firehouse Art Center is a nonprofit organization run almost entirely by volunteers. “I don’t even know if a lot of people know the city owns the Firehouse building,” said Jessica Kooiman, Executive Director. Providing the community with both national and local exhibits, Kooiman calls out the fact that Firehouse is an art center, not a gallery. “To me it’s a big difference,” she explains. The focus isn’t just on visual art, but more diverse offerings, like the center’s annual Pecha Kucha event in July or the upcoming “FRESH Art to Farm Experience”, which includes collaboration from 40 artists, 14 farms and 10 chefs. In Kooiman’s words, Firehouse is “a gift from the city to the city.” Be sure to stop by and discover this local treasure for yourself. General Manager Warren Smith credits the staff at Valley Nissan / Subaru for the dealership’s success. “I feel that we have great individuals within the organization who believe that taking care of our clients is top priority. I am not sure that we are doing anything special particularly, but doing our best to make sure that our clients get the service they deserve when they visit us for parts, service or sales. We believe in honesty, integrity, and teamwork to make sure our customers are taken care of. We would like to thank all our customers/clients for giving us the opportunity to assist them with all their automotive needs, as well as voting for Valley as the best automotive dealer in Longmont!”

Berthoud Floor Covering and Carpet Cleaning has a straightforward recipe for success. “We have good prices and high quality workmanship,” says Owner Mike Grine. “We do what we say we’re going to do.” That attitude has allowed Grine to almost entirely avoid marketing for the life of his business. “All of our business in the last 19 years has been pretty much word of mouth,” he says. “We don’t do high production. We get a lot of jobs done and they’re all done right the first time.” Berthoud Floor Covering and Carpet Cleaning has flooring in stock for quick flooring jobs, and they are also available 24/7 for restoration in case of flood damage. 504 Main St., Longmont, (303) 827-3620 barbedwirebooks.net

1225 Ken Pratt Blvd., Longmont, (303) 485-2617 fabulousfurnishings.net

With a steady influx of local authors, artists, musicians, and book clubs, as well as new and used books, Barbed Wire Books is not a place you walk into, get what you need and walk back out. It’s a place to browse, discuss and stay awhile. Owner Kathe Heinecken says, “A bookstore can be a hub for many different facets of culture and society. As these avenues open up, it’s only a matter of allowing the connections to happen.” Local bookstores fill a niche that chains just can’t. “By special ordering new, used, in print and out of print, books, movies, music, even prints and posters, we can do much more than sell best-sellers,” Heinecken points out. By stocking for and from their clientele they can offer a more “eclectic” selection and all of the extra needs of their customers.

Jill Cutler, owner of Lifestyle Consignments, says customers often ask if the furniture in her store is new, despite the fact that “consignment” is in the title. “We’re very picky about condition, manufacturer quality, trendiness, and marketability,” she says. “What makes our store unique to resale is the high quality and the high standards we have in our merchandise.” This, combined with friendly staff and the upbeat atmosphere that Cutler works hard to maintain, is why people love to shop at Lifestyle Consignments. They not only offer a fun shopping experience, but also an opportunity to give back through a program called “Consign for a Cause.” A consigner can choose to donate their 50 percent of the proceeds from the sale of their gently used items to a nonprofit of their choice. “We will immediately create a consigner account for that nonprofit,” says Cutler. “We designate the nonprofit as the consigner and the money automatically goes to them.”

Ace Hardware

At Ace Hardware people are most important element of their success. Just ask co-owner Kirsten Pellicer, who has been working at the store with her parents since she was a teenager. “Locally and nationally, we’re known as the helpful place,” says Pellicer. “You can’t be helpful without the people who are out there everyday interacting with the customers and telling them how to do their projects. That’s really what we’ve built our business on.” Pellicer’s parents bought the local hardware store 26 years ago and opened Ace, mantaining their strong commitment to the Longmont area. “My parents loved it here so much, they invested in the community and bought a business,” says Pellicer. “Longmont is just a wonderful community and it has been so good to us.” Second: Budget Home Center, 780 Boston Ave., Longmont (303) 678-8800, budgethomecenters.com

Purple Door Market

Whether you go for a legendary pot pie from their bakery or some locally-sourced meats from their deli counter, you’re likely to run into someone you know at Purple Door Market. “All the locals that frequent our market know all the employees by name and likewise, the employees know them by name,” says Co-owner Amy Ruf.” It has a very personable quality to it that you don’t get at a lot of other places.” Amy Ruf and Greg Vann have owned Purple Door Farm for three seasons and purchased Purple Door Market last year. They are excited to be a Hygiene favorite. “A big thankyou from us to all of our loyal customers,” Ruf says. “If anyone ever has any requests or ideas, please feel free to contact the store and let us know.” Second: Crane Hollow Cafe, 7502 Hygiene Rd., Hygiene, (303) 776-1551 Third:

Linda Snyder, third generation owner of Snyder Jewelers, knows that running a business isn’t just making a sale. It all comes down to building relationships. Not only does she treat customers like family, she also serves the community as co-founder of A Woman’s Work, and Board of Directors member of TRU Community Care Hospice as well as contributing to many local charities. Linda was inducted into the Boulder County Business Hall of Fame Class of 2015. For 24 years their mission has been to research, document and recommend for induction outstanding business leaders from the past and present whose business efforts have resulted in community wide economic, social, and/or cultural benefits to Boulder County and its citizens. Snyder says, “I am very proud to continue in the tradition of my parents and grandparents. They worked hard but truly enjoyed this business. It’s the best job in the world! We get to help people celebrate life’s most special moments.”

Wyatt’s Wet Goods is the largest retail liquor store in Longmont. But it takes more than a lot of floor space to be The Best! Wyatt’s sources many suppliers in the U.S. and beyond to pass along the best prices to their customers. “We are very selective and maintain a true ‘value for flavor’ profile that our customers enjoy,” says Dennis Dinsmore, managing partner. “We are local, family owned and managed. Our managing partners (Joe Henry, Hannah Korbitz and I) are each long term residents and we are connected with our community.” (Dinsmore’s family roots go back to the 1920s as miners in Ward.) Wyatt’s Wet Goods also works with local groups like A Woman’s Work, Left Hand Brewing and Longmont Downtown Development to help make their events a success.
