A Gadget Gift Guide

W

ith the holidays come a snow flurry of decisions. Real tree or artificial? Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays? Do you invite Uncle Jimmy and his faithful bottle of Scotch? Football, or that Law and Order marathon? Wrapping paper or decorative bag? Should you include that gift receipt, or make the ingrates keep whatever present you’ve chosen? One decision nobody should struggle over is which electronic gadget to give this season. The hottest video game on the market is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. With its intense action and breathtaking graphics, it’s the easiest way to give your friends post-traumatic stress disorder without actually enlisting them in the Army. (Though what a surprise that would be!) It’s rated M, for mature, and earns every serif of that rating, with its buckets of blood, strong language and toe-curling violence. Preschoolers, in other words, will love it. (Xbox 360, Playstation 3. $59.99) If killing-simulators aren’t your idea of holiday cheer, the iPod Shuffle is both inexpensive and hip. The base models are 2 gigabytes, which hold 500 songs—more than enough room for the lousy music kids listen to these days. The Shuffle is available in five delicious colors, and has come a long way from its three-button, random play mode. They’re now made with zero buttons, with a startlingly accurate voiceover that reads both the artist and title at the start of each song. Disc jockeys everywhere should begin preparing their resumes. (http://store.apple.com, $59.00) For those who don’t mind foisting a monthly fee on friends or family, but do want to give the most exciting gadget around, look no further than the Tivo. If you’ve been living on a deserted island, Tivo is the godfather of digital video recorders. It records whatever shows you tell it to, but also goes one step further: after a few weeks of monitoring your television habits, it also records things it thinks you might enjoy. While at first glance, the Tivo might seem like a bad idea—just another device shackling you to the television. Just the opposite, however. Tivo frees you from the television. No longer are you confined to the couch on the whims of network executives. You watch what you want, when you want. And with its fast forward feature, a two-hour episode of American Idol can be viewed in about 20 minutes, without missing anything. (Seriously.) Best of all, refurbished Series 2 Tivos are a steal at $79.99. (http://www.tivo.com) Digital cameras are kind of like technology’s version of fancy bath soap gift baskets. Unless you’re dropping five hundred dollars on a top-end model, they’re safe, perfunctory gifts that look good even at forty bucks. There’s no particular model worth recommending; they all look the same and work alike. Your best bet is to go cheap and throw in an SD memory card for a few bucks more. That way it looks like you care. If there’s a young one in need of a computer for school, but you don’t have two-grand to spare, check out the netbooks at Walmart. The Mirus 10.2” white

netbook with Windows XP has everything a student needs for accessing the Internet, and the processing power to take advantage of the most popular web-based applications. Though Microsoft Office is not included, any number of online office suites can fill the void. (Google Documents is the most prominent of the lot, though Microsoft Office Online should be available later this year.) For $248, it’s a powerful system for learning and interacting with the world. The App Store for the iPhone and iPod Touch seems like the last economic model keeping this country afloat. The perfect stocking stuffer for Apple geeks is an iTunes Gift Card, available at every checkout line you’re ever likely to stand in. Gift cards range from $15 to $50, and because apps are so inexpensive, go a long way. While some holiday dilemmas are eternal – turkey or ham? – the gift of gadgets doesn’t have to be. It’s a great concept because we keep a

These are freshwater pearls in every beautiful color combination like blues and browns and purples together. “We have several different lengths and we have matching bracelets and earrings,� said Navarra.

Darrell Driskell talked about the many different items that are hot sellers for this Christmas for the sports fanatic. Anything with the New Orleans Saints on it and pro-team items sell great anytime, but this year the Saints are really selling well because of their winning streak. “In particular, Saints jerseys, t-shirts and hats. McNeese continues to do well and anytime a team does well the items sell well,� said Driskell. During Christmas time things that people put in their rooms sell well such as team wall clocks, team trash cans, and team field maps that look like the football field. Typically LSU and McNeese sell well and when they win they do better. “We typically try to stockup on those items we know will sell well. Some

new items that I have are Retro Bobble Heads. They are made to appear old. Those are new, hot items,� said Driskell. Other items that might be of interest to the sports fanatic in your family would be framed mirrors that you can put on your wall with the logo of the team. believe one of the greatest things about sports is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And I believe that Derrick Fourroux is the greatest quarterback ever to play at McNeese State University. This is coming from someone who was born and raised in Lake Charles. It’s not like I moved here a couple of years ago without any prior knowledge of MSU football. I was a teenager when MSU quarterback Kerry Joseph led the Cowboys to the playoffs from 1992-1995. I never thought there would be another player that would even compare to Joseph. To this day I still believe that the best football team in the history of MSU was the 1995 squad. Joseph guided that team to a 13-0 start before the Cowboys were upset in the I-AA semifinals by Marshall. Prior to this season, Joseph was still number one on my list of MSU quarterbacks. However, after watching Fourroux improve his game for the fourth year in a row, I now put him above Joseph. I’m sure there are plenty of Cowboys fans out there who would disagree with my assessment, but MSU All-American running back Toddrick Pendland is on my side. “Derrick is the best quarterback in the history of McNeese,” Pendland told me. “No offense to Kerry Joseph. I know he was a great player, but in my opinion, Derrick is the best quarterback that I’ve ever been around. It’s been a privilege to play with him. He’s a great man, and he has a great attitude about the game.” Like Joseph, Fourroux has been a four-year starter for the Cowboys. Fourroux still has one regular season game remaining plus the playoffs to add to his statistics, but already he has broken a number of school records that were previously held by Joseph. While most quarterbacks will give reporters a good sound byte or two, Fourroux doesn’t say much at all. He certainly does not enjoy talking about himself. However, I did get him to say something about all of these records that he now owns. “There’s nothing more that I can say Derrick Fourroux about a great guy like Kerry Joseph,” said Fourroux. “He was a great player. I just try to do what I can for the team to help us get wins.” Fourroux and Joseph have each led the Cowboys to two conference championships although Fourroux is one win away from becoming a three-time conference champion. The only knock on Fourroux is that he has not led MSU to a playoff win. Joseph won five of his nine playoff starts while Fourroux is 0-2 in the postseason. However, I see that changing in the very near future. This season Fourroux has shown an ability to win games late in the fourth quarter. He’s already guided the Cowboys to four fourth quarter comeback victories and I believe he will lead the Cowboys to their first playoff win since 2002.

West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital Announces Employee of the Quarter West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital recently named Tonya Stillwell, physical therapist, as its fourth quarter employee of the quarter. Stillwell has been with the hospital for 13 years and has been in her current profession for approximately 15 years. Stillwell is a member of the Louisiana Physical Therapy Association and the American Physical Therapy Association, and serves as a clinical instructor for physical therapy students. Doug Addison, Jr. of Ragley is the grand prize winner in Cameron State Bank’s Outdoor Adventure Giveaway. Able to leap tall trees in a single bound, speedier than shoppers at a buy-one-get-one bin, more powerful than a seventy-five-percent-off sale, you’re invincible. Whew. Holiday shopping is hard work. So how about some relief? How about one-stop shopping at your local bookstore? Here are some great suggestions to get you going (and to shorten your gift-buying load).

Fiction

Without a doubt, there’s someone on your gift list who loves a mystery. That means you’re going to want to wrap up Heat Wave by Richard Castle. Check out Death Wish by Nicole Cleaver. Following a tragedy, a woman escapes to another life where nobody knows her background, and she tries to put her life together. When she meets a man she’s sure she can love again, well, let’s just say your giftee will want to take a bite out of this unusual novel. If your giftee loves historical novels, there are lots to look for this holiday season. The Last Prince of the Mexican Empire by C.M. Mayo is based on the true story of the reign of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico. Lady Vernon and Her Daughter by Jane Rubino and Caitlen Rubino-Bradway is based on Jane Austen’s Lady Susan and is set in Regency England. Does anyone ever outgrow their love of the classics? If your giftee is a fan of Robert Louis Stevenson, then your gift will be the favorite when you wrap up Flint and Silver by John Drake. A prequel to “Treasure Island”, this novel imagines what happened before John Silver and Joseph Flint met up in the classic. Another romance to try – although not a holiday novel – is The Inheritance by Tamera Alexander. Set in the untamed West, this is a novel about a young woman who moves to Colorado to make a fresh start and finds love. If a little international intrigue and a fast-paced, complicated story is exactly what your giftee will love, then look for Condemned by Jon Nicholas Iannuzzi. Set in New York, Russia, Columbia and Romania, this novel takes its readers on a whirlwind tour of the dangers of drug trafficking, organized crime, street dealers, and corruption. The holidays aren’t exactly the time for scary stuff, but if you’ve got a thrill-lover on your gift list, wrap up Afraid by Jack Kilborn. Travelers – particularly those interested in old buildings and beautiful architecture – will love to read Stories in Stone by David B. Williams. This book discusses art, geology, old buildings, and more. If you’ve ever spied a gargoyle atop a building and wondered why he was there, borrow this book back after you give it. No doubt there’s a Drama Queen (or King) on your gift list. For her (or him), there’s no better gift than How to Be Famous by Heidi Montag & Spencer Pratt. This tongue-in-cheek book gives step-by-step tips on getting your name in the tabs and becoming The One Everybody Talks About. Hint: not just for grown-ups, your teen may get a kick out of this book. Trivia fans with a basketball interest will really enjoy reading The Final Four of Everything, edited by Mark Reiter and Richard Sandomir. This fun book is filled with argument starters and trivia on a variety of topics, including Lousy Husbands, Absurd College Nicknames, and Richard vs. Dick. Another trivia-type book for fans of

minutiae is The Handy Geography Answer Book by Paul A. Tucci and Matthew T. Rosenberg, which is also great for kids as well as grown-ups. The holidays are a lousy time to be sick, but if you wrap up Perseverance: True Voices of Cancer Survivors by Carolyn Rubenstein, you can give the gift of encouragement. This book features the words and hopes of high school and college cancer survivors and though it sounds like a downer of a book, it’s not. What it is, though, is inspiring. Sometimes, a book can take you to other places, and if someone on your gift list is always dreaming of a vacation, wrap up Inventing Montana by Ted Leeson. For the past twenty years, Leeson and a group of friends have spent their summers in an old ranch house in Montana, fly fishing and enjoying life; this book is about their vacations. Hint: wrap it up with a gas gift card and hopes of a great get-away. Also look for Climbing Woodall Mountain by Mississippi authors Stuart Green and Gregg Parker. It’s a book about two friends and the very unordinary challenge they tackle, complete with room to journal your own great adventures. This was the fortieth anniversary of Woodstock, and if you’ve got someone who still longs for summers of Peace and Love, wrap up By the Time We Got to Woodstock by Bruce Pollock. Complete with pictures and lots of memories, this book is groovy, man. The Rock & Roll Book of the Dead by David Comfort, which is a look at the lives of Hendrix, Elvis, Lennon, Joplin, and Morrison and their impact on our music. While it may seem like an odd gift to give this holiday season, Nontoxic Housecleaning by Amy Kolb Noyes would surely be appreciated by anyone concerned about the environment. There are lots of good suggestions in here, all ideas that your going-green giftee will enjoy knowing. Looking for an unusual story for an unusual reader? Look for Soul Survivor by Bruce and Andrea Leininger with Ken Gross. Could young James Leininger be the reincarnation of a World War II fighter pilot? This true story is for your giftee to read and decide. Civil War buffs will relish Josie Underwood’s Civil War Diary, edited by Nancy Disher Baird. This book, written when the author was a girl living through the Civil War and sympathetic to the Union, gives a non-soldier’seye view of the War Between the States, and it can’t be missed. Someone on your gift list always wanted to change the world, so why not wrap up a book about people who once did? This gigantic book is filled with photos and a surprising amount of read-aloud for kids up to age 6. If you’ve got a girl age 6 to 12 on your holiday list, you know how much she wants a horse. Give her the next best thing by wrapping up The Mystery Stallion by Sharon Siamon. In this, the first in the Wild Horse Creek series, thirteen-year-old twins Sophie and Liv are spending spring break in Arizona, taking care of their grandparents’ herd. But mystery is afoot and your young horse-lover will want to read all about it. Junior scientists will love to read Hoaxed! Fakes & Mistakes in the World of Science by the Editors of YES Magazine. Are crop circles real? What about aliens, Bigfoot, the “missing link” and Piltdown Man? Kids want to know. Wrapping this book up as a gift is no mistake. If you’ve got a baseball fan who also likes creepy things, look for The Prince of Fenway Park CZ +VMJBOOB #BHHPĨ. In this novel for (mostly) boys ages 10 and up, there’s a curse on the Red Sox and Fenway Park. It’s up to an orphan with guts to fix the problem. It’s hard to find books for teenage boys sometimes, but Stepping Up by Mark Fink fills the bill nicely. This book about “average” Ernie is about life and basketball (not necessarily in that order) and is great for boys 12-to-15. If you’re looking for a gift for a little one who’s just learning about books,

here’s a trio of great possibilities: The Little Green Pea by Alison Barber, illustrated by Paige Keiser is a rhyming story of a pea who wants to be a tree. If someone you know is getting engaged this year, here’s a book for little sister, cousin, or stepdaughter-to-be: How to Get Married by Me and the Bride by Sally Lloyd-Jones and Sue Heap. This cute book is about marriage, from the perspective of a little girl who has some pretty cute insight. Not only is this a good book for a little girl, it would also be a good shower gift for a big girl, too. If your fantasy fan isn’t finding books fast enough, then try Children of the Dawnland by Kathleen O’Neal Gear and W. Michael Gear. This book, set in the Ice Age, is a good way to introduce kids ages 12-and-up to this genre and to these authors. Hint: it’s not just for kids. Adult fans of the Gear’s work will love this book, too. And there you are: something for pretty much everybody you need to buy for, at tiny non-budget-busting prices. H1N1 Vaccine and Prevention for Lake Charles

H

ealth officials are fighting the strong fight against the nasty H1N1 flu virus. The state of Louisiana and Lake Charles are doing their part to prevent the spread of the virus. Sean Smith, with The State of Louisiana’s Department of Health and Hospitals, said that as of November 12, “Statewide 66,000 doses of vaccine have been given out.” This new strain of Swine Influenza A (H1N1) virus first appeared this year in Mexico and then spread to the United States as well as other countries. This virus can present itself with a variety of symptoms such as chills, fatigue, headache, body aches, fever, cough, and sore throat. Depending on the severity of the case, the virus could cause pneumonia, respiratory failure, and even death. The H1N1 is unusual in that it is hitting younger people harder than older people. According to Candace Townsend, Director of Public Information and Communication at McNeese State University, “The problem with the H1N1 is that the younger people, particularly the college age group, 18-25, seem to be very highly susceptible to catching this and having a more difficult time with it than older people. The older people, those over 60, generally are the ones who have problems with the seasonal flu. It could be because it’s a new strain of flu. The younger people haven’t had the years for their bodies to build up the immunities against this particular strain.” The vaccine is now available at all parish health units, rural health clinics, and qualified health centers. “We have 1,755 lab confirmed cases of H1N1 in Louisiana. We have 34 confirmed deaths from H1N1,” said Smith. The office of public health has a state epidemiologist and when they receive confirmation from

the state epidemiologist then they know it is a confirmed death. “The one primary thing we are pushing is stay at home if you are sick. We just launched a new version of our website. It includes a flu shot locator. If you click on the icon for that and then choose your parish, it will tell you all of the public locations to get the vaccine,” said Smith. That website is: www.dhh.louisiana.gov. The flu virus is contracted from person to person by way of coughs and sneezes. Droplets from a cough or sneeze of an infected person can be deposited on the mouth or nose of people nearby. Influenza viruses may also be spread when a

person touches respiratory droplets on another person or an object and then touches their own mouth or nose before washing their hands. Often, it is the college age or younger person that forgets or doesn’t know any better than to share items and drinks. “College students don’t think too much about sharing lipstick or lip gloss or sharing a bottle of water with somebody. We all went through that phase and then grew out of it,” said Townsend. McNeese received an initial shipment of H1N1 vaccine that included 2100 doses—2000 doses of the nasal mist and 100 doses of the injectable

(shot). McNeese already had a pandemic planning team in place so they activated their plan and identified the target group of students that they considered to be high priorities based not only on the CDC’s recommendations, but also based on their own priority list. For example, they chose residence students, athletes, and students that are working in clinical rotations in hospitals like nursing students. “We wanted to make sure that we tried to get those through the voluntary clinic first. The athletes are traveling close together, traveling to other schools, and around other students. They may be traveling in common carriers like airplanes or charter buses. Resident students are one of the most susceptible groups,” said Townsend. McNeese operated out of the Community Health Center which is part of the College of Nursing. The volunteers in the clinic were primarily faculty members from the college of nursing. They also had some assistance from the Calcasieu Parish Medical Reserve Corps. “We notified our priority groups and asked them to come to the clinic and we were there between 3 and 7 pm. In the second week, we ran that clinic for five days and then the following week we received another shipment of the injectable vaccine. So, all total, we received 3400 doses of the H1N1 vaccine and the clinic was open for a total of 11 days. We administered 1600 doses of the vaccine,” said Townsend. This was a multi-layered approach to getting and administering the vaccine with the CDC, the distributors of the H1N1 vaccine, and the request then went up through the Louisiana offices of Public Health. There is a very specific way that the vaccine must be returned and part of that is because it has to be kept at a certain temperature and they want to very closely monitor the chain of custody of the vaccine.

ENTERPRISE BOULEVARD “Every dose of the vaccination administered was entered into the link system—which is the Louisiana computer network for the regular immunizations that are typically given to children,� said Townsend. Some parts of the country have seen great demands for the vaccine and even lines including college campuses particularly up in the Northeast. “We haven’t had a mass outbreak here. We’ve had about 40 cases of flu-like symptoms reported either to our student infirmary or of people calling and saying they’re not going to be in class because of flu-like symptoms—so it’s very much based on self-reporting,� said Townsend. With our climate we really don’t start having a big flu outbreak in this part of the country until later in the

winter, until after Christmas. “What we were worried about, and we are glad we got the vaccine early, is that as students come back for the spring semester, we may start seeing more cases,� said Townsend. On a routine basis, doctors are not testing to see if flu-like illnesses are really H1N1 or just seasonal flu. They’re going to treat H1N1 the same as seasonal flu. Townsend said, “The CDC and the Louisiana Office of Public Health has advised that you just automatically assume that it could be H1N1 and there is no real need to test because you are still going to be given the same kind of anti-viral flu medication. And it’s going to run the same kind of course as the regular flu.�

C

olorcast Veteran has been entertaining Lake Charles for over two and a half years now. If you haven’t heard of them, you’ve been under a rock. The band is fresh from recording an EP in North Carolina this summer. Mitchell Marlow, formerly of He Is Legend and now tour guitarist for Filter, recorded the bands EP. The title of their EP is The King, The Queen, The Guillotine. “It worked out really well for all of us. We went there hoping to get a good product and we got better than we thought we could get. It was two weeks with no pre-production. We just went in and hit record,” said Jordan Dougherty, vocals for Colorcast Veteran. Colorcast Veteran is: Jordan Dougherty, vocals; Luke Cooper, guitar and BGV; Sean Kelley, guitar; Alex Lasher, drums; Brett Howell, bass. The band’s style can be described as a cross between pop, indie, metal, and ska. They have many different influences. If you ask Jordan Dougherty to describe the band’s style he would say, “Some bands are straight-up Americana, some bands are 30

straight-up pop-punk, some bands are straight-up metal, some are straight-up hardcore metal, some are thrash metal. Then there is death metal and black metal. We are influenced partially by all of those. Our guitar players are metal heads and our drummer is too and he’s really into Southern metal which is a lot of breakdowns and taking everything and putting it in halftime which makes it a slow groove on stage. So, Southern metal mixed with elements of pop and straightup New England metal is our style.” All bands have their own way of approaching a song. Colorcast Veteran starts jamming and Dougherty writes a melody over it. He said they usually write the songs from

start to finish. “Sometimes they write it in riffs which seems as if it has a format to it and I wonder what I’m going to do with that, but there is a format to it because Sean, he’s the guitar player, who taught himself guitar and read Berkeley Books and studied and studied—he studied theory and learned it front to back. He learned different modes and the country of its origin, it’s just absurd. He’s a very modest guy and would never talk about it,” said Dougherty. The bonus of having Sean and his knowledge and talent is when they went to record in North Carolina. Everything was written perfectly and no one could say it wasn’t right. “The producer couldn’t say this isn’t in the right key or you can’t harmonize those two parts,” said Dougherty. When the band got to North Carolina, Dougherty had half of one song written. He wanted to tell a story when he got there. That became almost overwhelming for him. “I was putting the story together for months and months before we went there. I have four sisters. My sister Mary is really inspirational and she’ll give me ideas. I told her I wanted a story about my life mixed with music, but also like a fable. I didn’t write it to be some Jim Morrison weirdo; I just wanted to tell a story,” said Dougherty. The songs on the EP tell a story. In song one, Imitation of an Action (This is Where the End Begins), a King is killed by his son, the Prince. Dougherty is the Prince. Art is influenced by life and the next song was influenced by the divorce of Dougherty’s parents: Because it’s Judgment that Destroys. The third song, Duke of Scene, is how the Prince chose to take over the people and the land, but it is also like being a singer in a band. “The singer in the band is a metaphor for me being Duke in Duke of Scene, the third song. I chose Duke because there were no Kings in Ireland and I’m Irish,” said Dougherty. Song four is Wake Me Up. “That is like a call out to God saying wake me up, so that is the turmoil of the story, the conflict.” Song five is Madness on Madison. “Madison is the street I grew up on in Sulphur and the madness is growing up with my sisters, but they are my princesses so I take care of them,” said Dougherty. Song number six is The Harlequin’s Cadence Upon the Sheets. “This song is making a mockery of lead singers and making a mockery of people who rule lands and how they are promiscuous and throw themselves out there and sleep around constantly as if it is okay to do that. It’s making fun of myself and it’s also a dedication to the Harlequin because I work there,” said Dougherty. Rot the Womb is song number seven. “It’s an abortion song. It’s about me impregnating a girl who is not of [royal] blood. I’m being promiscuous with a girl that is not of royal blood. Since I’ve cheated, the Queen-to-be finds out and she kills the heir to the throne.” Song eight is This is the End.

“We go to hell, basically, in this song because of our actions— me and the princess.” In the follow-up CD, the story will basically take place in hell and they are trying to get back on earth and rule the people to help them because they lost their king. “Now I’m not a Satan worshiper or anything like that. I’m Catholic. I just like the story. I enjoyed writing this story. It’s the best escape from reality I could have to tell you the truth. I was waking up at 6:30 every morning before I had to record vocals to write. The whole experience in the studio was great. It wasn’t like we went to Lafayette to record our CD. It felt like we had done something different,” said Dougherty. They wanted to make these eight songs bigger than life. Demos come and go, but going to North Carolina was a great move on the band’s part. They have a solid EP that is artistic, thoughtful, and exciting. Colorcast Veteran is known for their live shows. “It’s great to be in Lake Charles and have a following and get people out to shows. We started playing around town and I’d like to say that we were a part of the start of the scene around town. It’s built up now to where everybody in town wants bands to play at their venue. Every bar wants someone to play now. You’ve got Sylvia’s, Toucans, AJ’s, and Luna. People are hungry and want to play, it’s great, it’s fun,” said Dougherty. Jordan Dougherty’s dad is actually the singer for the band Handsome Harry here in town. They’re playing together at AJ’s on November 27th with Parallel the Sky. Light up the Lake Christmas Celebration December 5

Santa Claus is coming to town during the annual Light up the Lake Christmas Celebration! The Jolly Old Elf will take to the streets of Lake Charles during the annual Christmas parade, starting at 2 PM on Saturday, December 5. Local groups, including schools, businesses, neighborhoods, organizations and performing groups will join Santa for a journey from Pine Street, south on Lakeshore to Clarence and north on Ryan to Pine Street. Lake Charles Toyota/Scion will award prizes for the top two floats and marching bands, as well as the best decorated vehicle and best specialty group. The Families Helping Families organization will serve as the Grand Marshal. Santa’s Workshop will take place in the Civic Center Coliseum from 3-5:30 PM. Kids of all ages are invited to dawn their antlers and light-up noses to join in the reindeer games and ride the Christmas Train. Prizes and gifts will be on the agenda with arts & crafts, food, activities, story telling, music and much more. The Community Band Christmas Concert begins at 3:30 PM in the second floor Mezzanine. Sulphur’s Holiday House Market Christmas Under the Oaks Entertainment December 3-5

Sleigh bells ring. Are you listening? Snow will definitely be glistening in Sulphur for the 8th annual Christmas Under the Oaks celebration with all activities centering around the Henning Cultural Center at 923 Ruth Street on Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 3-5. There are all sorts of Christmas activities, from carnival rides, fireworks, and the Spectacle of Lights, to performances and live music from a myriad of genres and talents. The Sulphur Kiwanis Balloons on Parade starts at 3 PM on Saturday, complete with many larger than life, colorful balloons! At the Henning Cultural Center, there will be live music leading up to the 8th annual Spectacle of Lights at 6 PM, where Old Man Winter always delivers bundles of snowflakes. Sulphur’s biggest fireworks display will light up the night sky during the Spectacle of Lights. There is also a 100 percent chance of snow in the forecast. The festival also includes carnival rides and food vendors as well as the Holiday House shopping event at the Henning Cultural Center, right next to the Brimstone Museum. The Holiday House will be open 10 AM -8 PM, Friday-Saturday, Dec. 4th & 5th. This year’s Holiday House at Christmas Under the Oaks will be preceded by a special “Preview Gala” on Thursday night from 6:30 – 9:30 PM. This exclusive event is being held to help raise money for the Brimstone Historical Society. The Iowa Merchants will usher in the 2009 Holiday Season with the 16th Annual Christmas Parade on Saturday, Dec. 12. Jackson Square West he Kiwanis Club members outdid themselves with Jackson Square West Antique, Art & Handicraft Festival. There was so much to see, the Shadow grew frustrated. Lesson learned: don’t go Christmas shopping with the entire family! Right away I spotted the perfect gift for Shadowhusband, but he was standing beside me so what was I to do? Well, like any smart wife, I wrote down The Bird Crib, and got a name, address and phone number for .BSWJO (VJESZ out of Jasper, Texas. Marvin makes Marvin Guidry the most wonderful birdhouses—built for the comfort of the birds. They’re constructed of vinyl so the birds stay cooler, and they have a 30-year steel roof and lifetime vinyl construction. Not this year, hubby, but the next time I drive through Jasper . . . Reluctantly saying goodbye to The Bird Crib, I browsed the art and jewelry aisles and left hints galore, but I don’t think husband or daughter paid any attention. I chatted with my writer-artist friend, 1FHHZ #PSFM. Peggy is the author of a novella called The Blue Bonnet Café published by the Wild Rose Press. I just love multi-talented people. I spoke with %JOBI 'POUFOPU who was manning the area of Peggy Borel artist .PMMZ 3FFE. About the time I clicked Dinah’s pic, Molly appeared. pearls, you name it. &MMB )FCFSU told me she makes the area craft shows but she also enjoys having jewelry parties. Around the corner, we came across another friend—1IZMMJT 4UFFDI, with her jewelrymaking buds, 7FSPOJDB -BGBOFĨF, $ISJTUZ Veronical Lafanette, Christy Jones, Vicky White, +POFT 7JDLZ 8IJUF and Phyllis Steech and Mary Bushnell .BSZ #VTIOFMM. These ladies got together and taught themselves to make jewelry. They were raising money for the Saint Nicholas Center, a nonprofit organization that provides ABA Therapy. I can’t wait for next year’s festival. I’m bringing lots of money and I’m leaving the family at home.

A Bridge to Publication Bayou Writers’ Conference The Bayou Writers’ Group annual conference—better known as A Bridge to Publication—took place on Saturday, November 14th. This year they held it at the University United Methodist Church on Patrick Street. The venue was perfect for the 65+ people who drove in from Houston, northeast Arkansas and all parts of Louisiana. The conference is specifically designed for writers of all levels. The conference committee did a fantastic job. "OHJF %JMNPSF was conference coordinator this year. Publisher, $IBSMFT .D(SFX, explained to attendees exactly what publishing is all about these days, and the various terms all writers should know and understand when dealing with publishers. takes. She advised never to begin writing about a crime until the murderer is caught otherwise, a writer might be putting her own life in danger. Now, that’s good advice! Lunch was catered by The Boarding House. BWG member $ISJT #BMEBVMG worked hard organizing breakfast, lunch and goodies for the autograph party. I’m thinking she should be an event planner, but she’s concentrating on her novel writing. That might be a smart move since she won The First Page contest. The Shadow enjoyed meeting publisher 5SFOU "OHFST from Acadian House Publishing. Trent is the author of The Forgotten Hero of My Lai: The Hugh Thompson Story, and was nominated twice for the Nobel Prize in Literature. He’s also editor and publisher of Acadiana Profile, the Magazine of the Cajun Country, one of the longestrunning regional publications in the United States. % # (SBEZ drove over from Baton Rouge to attend the conference. His book, Red Planet Noir, should be out in a couple of weeks. The Shadow also met 8JOėFME Nagle, a short story writer who lives in WestLake. The bookroom overflowed with reading material, thanks to Barnes & Nobel from Beaumont, Texas, Acadian House from Lafayette, and the local Yellow Flag Press, as well as our own area authors. The Shadow was thrilled to meet new author/illustrator -FSJO 'SFZPV from Sulphur. Lerin’s first picture book, The

Adventures of Piston the Puppy, is about a playful puppy that explores the alphabet and discovers the world around him. Another special author I met is +FTTJDB 3JFCFM who wrote Katrina and The Rinky-Dink Sewing Machine. This special book is a tribute to Jessica’s mom who loved to tell stories.
