Bring out the best of summer vegetables Family Features We all want to eat more vegetables — and in the summer, when farmers markets and grocery stores are filled with fresh, colorful produce, it’s easier than ever. From juicy red tomatoes and yellow sweet corn to vibrant green broccoli, seasonal produce can be even more enjoyable with the addition of spices

and herbs. “I’m always thinking about ways to make vegetables taste great and be more healthful and exciting — other than just adding butter and salt,” said registered dietitian Wendy Bazilian. “Adding spices and herbs is easy to do, and they only cost pennies per serving. Plus, they’re already in your kitchen.” To add flavor to everyday vegetable favor-

ites like zucchini and carrots, Bazilian recommends an easy rule of thumb: start with 1/4 teaspoon of spices and herbs, such as basil and oregano, per cup of veggies, along with a splash of citrus juice or olive oil. “You can also dial up the flavor depending on the cooking method,” Bazilian said. “Roasting vegetables like broccoli and tomatoes creates a caramelized flavor that pairs

deliciously with garlic, basil, oregano, honey and white vinegar. Grilling vegetables gives a smoky, charred flavor. Or, let the natural flavor of green beans shine by steaming them with rosemary and thyme.” Try these simple flavor tips to season your favorite vegetables and visit www.McCormick.com for more ideas you can use all year long.

Mixed Vegetable Grill Servings: 6 • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar • 1 1/2 teaspoons McCormick Basil Leaves • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon McCormick Garlic Powder • 1/8 teaspoon McCormick Ground Black Pepper • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 6 cups assorted cut-up vegetables, such as asparagus, bell peppers, zucchini, yellow squash, red onion and small sweet potato Mix brown sugar, basil, salt, garlic powder, and pepper in small bowl. In large bowl, drizzle oil over vegetables; toss to coat well. Add seasoning mixture; toss to coat well. Place vegetables in grill basket or rack, or thread onto skewers. Grill over medium heat 10–12 minutes or until vegetables are tender, turning occasionally.

Duke commit Bartholomew leads Lady Indians after record year By DOUG GORMAN dgorman@newnan.com

The East Coweta volleyball team raised the bar to a whole new level last season under first-year head coach Amber McClure. With a school-record 43 victories and a trip to the Class AAAAAA Sweet 16, the Lady Indians had one of its most successful volleyball campaigns ever while also winning an Area 2-AAAAAA title. East Coweta also repeated as Coweta Cou nt y C h a mpion s w it h w i n s over Newnan and Northgate, in this year’s trimatch scheduled for Sept. 11 at Northgate. With a year under her belt, however, McClure thinks the Lady Indians are just now scratching the surface for just how good the team can be this season and in the future. “Last year was really exciting for us,” she said. “The girls all really worked hard and bought into what we were trying to accomplish and teach, but we have even higher expectations.” The team’s success included two winning streaks of 10 and 12 games while finishing 43-7 after falling to eventual state semifinalist South Forsyth in the Sweet 16. It helped to have two-time Newnan TimesHerald Player of the Year Jessi Bartholomew

Tara and Anna Iyengar were named outstanding youth volunteers by Special Olympics of Georgia. From left, the Iyengar family – Raghu, Anna, Tara, Laxmi, and Vishnu.

in the lineup as McClure made the jump from coaching in middle school to the high school level. Bartholomew was a dominating force as a junior, finishing with 529 kills, 232 aces, 46 assists and 167 digs. She heads into her final year of high school action verbally committed to play college volleyball at ACC power Duke. “There is a lot of pressure off of her now, and she can enjoy her senior year,” McClure said. “I am glad she got it out of the way, so

Coweta Special Olympics volunteers honored By Celia Shortt celia@newnan.com

Two Coweta County Special Olympics volunteers were recently named outstanding youth volunteers by the Special Olympics of Georgia. Tara and Anna Iyengar were honored at the Georgia Special Olympics 2014 Summer games. Both have been involved with Coweta County’s Special Olympics since 2009, when their mom, Laxmi, attending an informational meeting held by Kelly Abercrombie, coordinator for Coweta County’s Special Olympics. Iyengar is the special education teacher at Arbor Springs Elementary School, and at

the meeting, she learned one of the sports the Special Olympics is involved with is swimming. “My kids all swam, and I thought it would be a good idea,” she said. Tara, Anna, and their older brother, Vishnu, all became involved and began working with the kids and teaching them how to swim and to grow in their skill. Tara and Anna have also participated in a unified relay team, which includes two special needs athletes and two other athletes. They and the swimmers began practicing the first week of March and continued

she can concentrate on the season and having a little bit of fun.” Bartholomew is among the four seniors who McClure will be counting on to take the Lady Indians back to the playoffs. O ut side h it ter H ayle a Mannebach earned Coweta County honorable mention honors last year and is back for her senior year while joining right hitter Casey Padgett and Elizabeth Schramm, whom equally bring experience back to the court. “Our four seniors have all

until the end of May. Two different types of sessions are available for the swimmers. One is for beginners and focuses more on teaching them how to swim, and the other is for more advanced swi m mers. A ll t he work from March until May prepared each of them for their first race at the state meet in May at Emory University. Ta r a t h o u g h t b e i n g involved in the organization was simply “going to be fun,” but she ended up gaining perspective and learning about life. “I’ve seen these kids struggle with things we do everyday,” she said. “I’m more

been around the program for a long time,” McClure said. They all have great attitudes and are working hard.” Junior Dominique Ingram is also back after a stellar season for the Lady Indians. East Coweta’s middle hitter earned Second-Team AllCounty recognition in 2013 after finishing with 159 kills. Like Ingram, Sydney Winters and Katie Jones had solid sophomore campaigns in 2013 and come back with high expectations in 2014. This past spring McClure started a boys club program, teaching the game to some of the best male athletes in the school. Even though boys volleyball isn’t sanctioned by the Georgia High School Asso-

ciation, the team from East Coweta did well, winning a 15-team sponsored by the Georgia Volleyball Coaches Association. McClure said this shows how popular the sport is becoming. She thinks the boys team can even pay dividends for the Lady Indians. “They are learning the game and they can help us do things in practice, it should really be a benef it to the girls.” East Coweta moves into Area 3-AAAAAA this year while rejoined by Newnan, Douglas County, Langston Hughes and Westlake. The group is joined by Cobb schools Campbell, Pebblebrook and South Cobb, some of which played in a former

2-AAAAA area previously with both Coweta schools. The non-area schedule, however, could offer the Lady Indians their biggest challenge during the 2014 season. The Lady Indians scrimmage Fayette County on Thursday in their first test aga inst live competition before traveling to Cherokee on consecutive weekends for a playdate at Woodstock followed by the annual Sequoyah Classic. “We are going to get to see some really good competition early,” McClure said. “These tournaments attract some really good quality teams.”

likely to help people now.” The most fulfilling part for her has been to see the kids progress. “A lot of these kids didn’t know how to dog paddle, and now they can swim 50s and 100s,” she said. Anna was in fifth grade when she sta rted volunteering and thought being involved would be fun while she was watching the practices with her mom. Soon after, she started helping by handing out clipboards and equipment. Her favorite part of being involved with the Coweta County Special Olympics was hanging out with the kids. She also loved the looks on their faces and all the cheers when they finished a race. Both Tara and Anna knew they were nominated, but

were surprised when they won. The Special Olympics of Georgia usually only gives out one of these awards. “We’re not doing anything special,” said Tara. “It’s what everyone would do.” “I’m really proud of them,” said Mrs. Iyengar. “They really enjoy doing it. It’s a feeling of being part of something.” For Tara, this next year will be different, as she will be attending the University

of Georgia in fall and won’t be able to regularly volunteer anymore with the Coweta County Special Olympics. “I’ve known these kids longer than I’ve known a lot of my friends,” she said. Tara does plan on being involved as much as she can when she is home from school. “I think next year when she comes to visit, they (the athletes) will love it,” said Anna.

Patel named Teacher of the Year By CELIA SHORTT celia@newnan.com

Ruth Hill Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Ami Patel was a n nounced as Coweta County School System’s 2014 Teacher of the Year at Thursday’s recognition ceremony. “It is very humbling to know I work in a school system with so many good teachers,” said Patel after receiving the award at the ceremonies held at the school system’s Centre for Per-

forming and Visual Arts. “I’m just one of many who do what I do.” Ruth Hill Principal Dr. Aaron Corley said Patel is “one of the most dedicated and caring teachers I have ever encountered, and I am proud to have her at Ruth Hill.” Corley added he would be proud to have Patel as his own child’s teacher, too. “Educators allow dreams to come true,” said Patel. “They (students) are our future, and we can help them achieve the

dreams they always wanted.” “To your students, you are always a hero,” she said. Patel said her father was her hero. She told the story of how he came to America by himself more than 25 years ago. When he arrived, he made his way in a strange and new place, and worked hard to bring his family to him and to make a life for his family. She remembered how he brought the family to America with few resources, but he still worked to provide them

“with opportunities for success.” In addition, she and her family members all prospered through the American educational system. Patel said she brings those experiences and commitments to her classroom and students, and views teachers similarly as heroes to their students. Patel was one of three finalists chosen from the Coweta school system’s 31 individual

Recipe/Community Connection

Don’t tell me it’s impossible Around our house, there’s one go-to movie we ca n always agree on. It’s brought out after there’s no majority vote on something else. The Little Black Dress wa nts somet h i ng happy; the various SONS of Thunder prefer detective mysteries, zombies, light sabers or survivor-type shows. If no one caves, we go to the tie-breaker. We end up watching one of the three trilogies that make up “The Lord of the Rings.” The SONS can pretty much cite entire sections of the movie – and in the proper accent, no less. One of our favorite scenes is during a big battle. The Witch-King of Angmar has just landed atop his Nazgul. He’s about to have the Nazgul eat Eomund, when Eowyn comes between them with sword drawn. The WitchKing pretty much laughs at Eowyn and says she can’t do anything about it. “Do not come between the Nazgul and its prey,” the Witch-King says. For those not up on “Lord

of the Rings,” basically the second-i n-com ma nd bad guy (Witch-King of Angmar) is on a dragon (Nazgul) and is going to feed the good king (Eomund) to his f lying pet (Nazgul again) when his daughter (Eowyn) grabs a sword and basically says “try it and die.” The bad guy points out no man can kill him. The princess points out she’s, well, a “she” and cuts off the dragon’s head and then runs a sword right through the head of the bad guy. End of both dragon and bad guy. Which pretty much sums up the Little Black Dress when she’s told something she wants to do is impossible. And I realize I am on very, very thin ice, so just bear with me for a second because I know The Dress is looking around for her own sword right about now. I am not saying the LBD is a Witch-King nor, heaven forbid, some Nazgul. Rather, she’s the one with the sword about to cut anyone’s head off if they tell her she can’t do something. Case in point. I recently

JOHN WINTERS

took the SONS to summer scout camp. I get a call from The Dress asking if I cared if she redid the fireplace. I started to say it was too big of a job … there was silence on the other end. “Do whatever you want babe ,” I repl ied . I h ave learned. Photos soon appeared on Facebook of her with a big sledge hammer, an axe at one point, and other demolishing tools. By the time we got home, we had a brand new fireplace. Which looks awesome, by the way. L a st week , T he Dress decided it was time to redo two of the SONS’ f loors. Heavy pet traffic had turned the carpets into, well, let’s say it was time. The Dress wanted hardwood floors. And she didn’t want that tongue-in-groove or anything like that. Just planks of wood. And she

was told repeatedly by all the DIY store employees how it couldn’t be done. She needed to do this and that and ... Yeah. Next thing I know, she has the SONS toting in 8 foot by 10 inch boards she’s picked up. I’m enlisted to do the cutting. Since we don’t have a table saw, I had to use a hand circular saw, which was an adventure. She wants a very specific look. And she’s bound and determined to get that look, which, unfortunately, can’t be found in any one stain. I have finished my part, the sawing and hammering and, let’s face it, time for me to get out of the way. The LBD sets to work. She uses five different stains on the floors. Five. She gets the look she wants. She is happy. Afterward, she looks at me and says, “I hate it when people tell me I can’t do something.” Life is short. You can listen to all the naysayers who tell you it’s impossible. Or you can trust in yourself and change your own world. It’s up to you.
