As it turned out, I had two surprises during my Almoradi factfinding expeditions. The first was an unexpected free feast of local artichokes, cooked to perfection, washed down by local wine. Secondly, I met some TIM readers who seemed to have heard of me but asked about Derek Workman. (Oh well I always tick the box for no publicity) Back to business - Almoradi is a delightful little town of about 20,000 inhabitants located in the heart of the Vega Baja, inland from Torrevieja. It is well served by the AP-7 motorway providing residents with easy access to coast, airport, or further inland. It dates back to 1196 BC founded by the legendary King Brigo. Originally, it was named Amarion. It is very popular with the British for both living and visiting. The prices for goods and property are lower than on the coast so it is a good value for money location. The charming town centre square, Plaza de la Constitucion, provides the hub for the busy street market every Saturday morning. Plenty of space to enjoy a coffee and a chat with friends whilst watching the world pass by or admire the well-manicured trees. In recent years, the central area has been improved and extended with pedestrian only areas making it pleasant and easy to walk around and enjoy all the town has all to offer. The secrets I will share with you, apart from the above, is the opportunity to participate in the free local tours offered by the town’s tourist office. The tours, or rutas, start from the tourist office located next to the main church in the square, and offer something for everyone. I recently joined the cultural route, which gently meandered around the town centre visiting the important historical buildings including the church, a chapel, and the theatre. For me this was the highlight as it is an impressive building, quite surprising for a small town such as Almoradi. It includes the opportunity to go back stage and see parts of the building not usually open to the public. If religious history is of interest to you then the church is well worth a visit and you will receive detailed explanations of the artifacts from the knowledgeable tour guide. The organ is rather special and apparently now only very few people are still able to play it. This tour is the first Saturday of the month (See Fact File) For a contrast, I later joined the Green Route along with some TIM readers. This is for those will a little more stamina as it involves walking a greater distance out into the town’s ‘campo’ towards the River Segura. However, for this extra effort you might be rewarded with a dish of alcachofas and local vino along with an opportunity to meet some of the locals. A very welcoming bunch keen to share their local produce and, of course, have a chat. Others routes include the Chapels, Furniture and Gastronomic (small charge) all of which start from the main tourist office. Naturally, the town also has many fiestas in the true Spanish style. The biggest of which are the festival in honour of Saint Abdon and Saint Selen on July 30th. Known locally as ‘The Santicos de la Piedra.’ It is one of the most important and 2

Costa Blanca traditionally has been celebrated for many years to pray for good harvesting weather. Around the same time, the town also celebrates a Moors and Christian’s festival with parades, fireworks, music and dancing. The Holy Week celebrations are also an important event on Almoradi’s calendar and was recently declared Fiesta of Local Tourist Interest by the Valencian Community. The town has had its disasters and was badly affected by the big earthquake in 1829, which killed many people and destroyed lots of buildings. The following century Almoradi suffered damage during the civil war. However, the town continues to thrive and has not been overwhelmed by the building boom. Currently the main road through the town is being remodelled as new drainage and other services are being installed. Whether you want to join in a free tour, search for a bargain or just amble around the town and enjoy a café with a tapa, Almoradi offers you plenty of opportunities to wile away an hour or two just relaxing soaking up the pleasant tranquil atmosphere. Easy access via the AP-7 motorway or the CV 910 from the Orihuela direction. Plenty of free parking on the side streets (avoid Vado signs, parking prohibited) Free Tours – Saturday morning bookable via the tourist office on 966 783 442 Or alternatively, email: almoradi@touristinfo.net The free tours start from the tourist office located beside the church in the main plaza at 10.30 Market Day – Saturday morning

The

Garden

By Barbara Barton

SHRUBS

This is going to be my last sortie into shrubs for the garden – at least for the time being - and I am going to cover 2 shrubs that I particularly like although they are vastly different.

First up is Berberis. Berberis is a tough little shrub and extremely versatile. It is fully hardy and will tolerate drought resistant areas. As ever, all plants will benefit from some water but at least you should be able to leave your Berberis for extended periods without it deciding to die on you There are 400 – 500 varieties but the particular variety we have successfully grown is Berberis thunbergii. It will flourish in any well drained soil, even coping with very poor soil and can thrive in an exposed location, either in the sun or part shade It’s a thorny plant and the thorns could be a problem if you have young children running about but apart from that the thorns can act as a deterrent for unwanted visitors, human or animal, so not such a bad thing

Berberis and Lantana

The foliage of Berberis thunbergii is a lovely purple colour and it produces yellow flowers from spring time. It’s quite low growing and spreading and is architecturally very attractive.

4

So all round interest, with colourful foliage making it stand out against the more traditional greens of the garden and also giving flowers.

well and keep moist until established

Eso es - and that is that. A prune and tidy up, after the flowers have finished, keeping the shape and removing any dead wood but apart from that pretty low maintenance My second shrub is Lantana, a lovely choice to give bright colour and fragrance to the garden. The blooms are made up from masses of tiny cup shaped flowers, always in vibrant or rich colours Lantanas can give you all year round colour, especially in coastal areas where it’s warmer. Inland they are best planted in sheltered positions but you do need to be mindful that sharp frosts or prolonged cold weather could kill it off. However, if you should lose your plant then you can easily replace it and they are very quick growers Personally I think it’s worth the gamble as it is such a stunning shrub Plant out your Lantanas in the spring, once the soil has warmed a bit. They like the sun but a position which offers some part shade would be preferable Whilst Lantanas are not overly fussy about the type of soil they grow in, what is important to them is good drainage. They do not like sitting in the wet so line the hole with some gravel or small stones before planting and add a bit of good compost to the soil as you return it

Buy your shrub from your local garden centre and plant it by digging a hole twice as big as the pot it comes in and about the same depth. Add a little compost to the soil you have removed Check the roots as they may have become impacted and gently tease them out so they don’t continue to wrap themselves around the root ball

Plant your shrubs in masses to get a dramatic effect or as a single specimen. Depending on the variety, Lantanas can grow from a foot to 6 feet high so check the label before purchase to make sure its going to fit the space you have earmarked! So that’s my two recommendations for this month. From next month I will be looking at plants that climb so until then,

Pop the shrub into the hole and reintroduce the soil, gently tampering down. Water

Happy Gardening – you can bury a lot of troubles digging in the dirt

Popular Music

As I mentioned last month I am now preparing for a charity concert in Alicante on March 26th. The preparation involves putting together the set list. Choosing songs is extremely difficult so next month I will let you know what I eventually selected. I have always loved harmony songs. Perhaps it goes back to my start in music as part of a fourpart harmony group in the sixties or even before that when I sang in the school choir where the harmonies were quite simply sublime. Anyway it got me thinking about harmony. I think it was the Everley Brothers who, with only two voices, could create marvellous harmonies that seemed to create more notes than they were singing. I certainly remember the superb harmonies created by The Hollies with their diverse voices and excellent song choice. It came as no surprise that when Graham Nash decided to leave he went to join Crosby and Stills to form Crosby, Stills and Nash perhaps one of the best close harmony groups augmented a little later by the plaintiff voice of Neil Young. In the sixties the Bee Gees arrived from Australia and with their three voices entertained the world with some of the best harmonies in popular music. I still recall The Springfields and The Seekers who focused on harmony and melody. Good stuff indeed. And who can forget the harmonies of the Beach Boys!

In the early 80’s I was enjoying a period of creativity with my singing and I desperately wanted to record my own songs. So out I went and purchased a Revox B77 reel-to-reel studio quality recorder. I constructed a makeshift studio in a spare bedroom and went about the task of recording. The recorder was superb with the capability of recording sound on sound, echo and multi-tracking. It was then that I was able to experiment with harmony, layering voices and guitar to create sounds that to me sounded pretty good. Pity the record companies didn’t agree! I still possess the master tape so maybe the time has come to enter the digital age and transfer the recordings onto CD. I will keep you posted. Now back to the harmony. In the 70’s the Eagles appeared on the scene and much of their work is legendary. The blend of excellent melody, intricate lyrics, good story telling and harmony made them one of the world’s leading bands and certainly one of the most popular. I also have to say that Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ contains some of the best harmonies ever and certainly set them apart from the rest. Perhaps it’s time to enter the interactive world through TIM. No doubt there are many groups and songs I have not mentioned so if you have a favourite ‘harmony’ song or group, why not e-mail me at johncurrie123@hotmail.com? Just title your e-mail ‘Harmony songs’ and make sure that they are virus free. Maybe we can compile a list of them in another article? Meanwhile, back to compiling the set list which, unfortunately, will not contain harmony songs.

It’s over 8 years since Assintem started out as a company. After all of this time, it had become obvious that it was now time to upgrade our premises, in order to offer a better and more convenient service to our clients. The decision to move to new premises had been going round in our mind for some time, although with the present situation in Spain, we hadn’t reached that final decision. However, to be able to progress in business, changes needed to be made. With our determination to continue offering the best service possible, we decided that it was the best moment for our business to take a step forward. Assintem has now also signed a collaboration contract with Banesto, part of the Santander banking group and we would like to take advantage of this occasion to make this service public knowledge and introduce Mª Jose Oliver Montaner, the manager of the Banesto office that we now also belong to. From now on, we add the Banesto bank link to our taxation and work-related consultancy, administrative and translation agency. We aim to increase our work-load and offer a much improved service to clients both old and new. So the 18th February came, the opening day for our new offices. After a month of organising electricians, decorators, bricklayers and IT specialists, the office was ready to be presented to the general public. We had a marvellous and unforgettable day in the company of clients, family and friends. We would like to thank all of them for their support. TIM Magazine™

by Julian Ashington Hello every one and welcome to the April motoring section. Firstly I would like to start with a little warning. Over the last few months I have on many occasions mentioned the speed limits on Spanish roads. Well, the Spanish being Spanish they have done it again and as of Monday 7th March, the speed limit as been reduced from 120kph to 110kph on the motorways so do be aware. The Formula 1 season has started and in April we have 2 venues to watch, the first on April 10, the Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur) and the second Chinese (Shang Hai) on the 17th. Sebastian Vettel will once again drive for Red Bull. Red Bull has announced that Sebastian will continue to drive for the team until the end of the 2014 season. Last year at just 23 years old, Vettel became the sports youngest ever world champion after securing 10 pole positions, five victories and 256 points in the teams RB6 car. The German has been supported by Red Bull since 1998 and is a graduate of the

Red Bull junior team.

Now for a couple of tips. I am still noticing on many cars that come for service that the spare tyre has very little air in it. It is very important to check you’re spare because if you are unlucky enough to have a puncture you would be stuck with out it. Also take a good look at your tyres and see if they are wearing evenly. Turn the steering fully to the left and right to check the inside edge of the tyre. If it is worn low this could be a sign of a tracking problem or a more serious a suspension problem. If you are not sure get it checked out as it could save you a lot of money. It’s the time of year that the weather finally starts to warm up, so make sure you check all your levels especially the water level. If you do have to top it up then you probably have a leak. Have it checked out again for a simple check could save any disaster that could happen. Just one other thing not to over look is the timing belt. Most manufactures recommend replacement every 60,000 mls (80.000 km) or five years. These belts drive lots of things but mostly they drive the cam shafts and if the timing belt fails, the valves stop going up and down but the pistons don’t, causing the pistons to come in to contact with the valves causing very expensive damage and in some cases a total engine destruction. Well that’s it for this month happy motoring do drive carefully. E-mail: theinlandmagazine@yahoo.co.uk • Web site: www.timspain.com

ONE FLEW OVER….. by John McGregor

The Countryside! It was this one’s birthday the other day. Forty-nine, since you ask – oh, sorry, that was the year…the wife did well – no, not that, although… anyway, she booked me an instruction flight in a small plane. Did you see the advert in last month’s TIM magazine? No? Well, I’ll tell you about it. Chris Pickles and his partner Jan run air experience and instructional flights from their small, but growing airbase near Pinoso. Their aeroplane is a two-seater (side-by-side), intimate but totally effective and Chris

taking off again and returning, with me doing some actual flying along the way. Sounded good to me! Their airstrip was only five minutes from the restaurant, we took some photos outside, climbed in and Chris spent a few minutes explaining the dual controls – and we were off! The airstrip is grass – well, hard-packed soil – and within only a short run we were up and away, soaring over the lovely Spanish countryside, soon passing over Elda and Monovar. Chris explained clearly to me; just use your eyes to look where you’re going, not on the instruments but straight ahead. Pick a point and go for it and concentrate on keeping the plane straight and level with the control column for up and down and/or banking a little, combining the latter with using the rudder pedals in the event of a necessary turn. Hey, reading this afterwards I nearly sound as if I know what I’m talking about! After half-an-hour’s pleasant flying we saw the small airfield at Mutxamel with its tarmacked landing strip, and landed beside a small building with offices and a café/restaurant. There must have been twenty to thirty similar small aircraft and a couple of helicopters parked there, and the atmosphere inside the building was very friendly, very Spanish with people nodding and smiling. It’s a bit like visiting a club at a motorway service area where you pay a small fee to stop.

has a very easy way with him to make you feel totally confident. From our La Marina home we journeyed inland via Elche, Aspe, Novelda, Monovar and to Pinoso, and took the Yecla road out. Five minutes out of Pinoso we turned off as clearly instructed, our journey took us about three-quarters of an hour. Our rendezvous was the very nice English-run Manor House restaurant, where we met Chris and Jan and enjoyed a pre-flight coffee. I actually have a nodding acquaintance with the basic controls of an aircraft from flying a glider years ago (although I was sixteen in the ATC at the time – but it’s like riding a bike, you never forget). Chris asked if I was keen to see or do anything specific. No, not particularly, so he explained his plan was to take off and head towards the coast, where we would land at a small aerodrome, and stop for a short while before

After a twenty minute break we got back in, and having received clear instructions from Chris I taxied us round and took us off, except with Chris operating the rudder pedals to keep us straight. Up we went, no problems – it was great, no problems, very exhilarating. As I was flying us back Chris asked if the slight buffeting was bothering me. I had thought it was just me wrestling with the controls a little over-necessarily, but apparently it was bit rough over the higher ground we were flying over. I hadn’t noticed I was having such fun concentrating hard! As this leg was downwind we got back a little quicker than we went, and we could see and waved to the girls sitting outside the restaurant below waiting for us. Under expert tuition I flew a full circuit, doing four ninety-degree turns, steadily losing height until we lined up for the final landing. No, I didn’t land it, I think that would be a few lessons on, but the whole experience was brilliant and I cannot fault the operation at all. Chris is very relaxed, easy to talk to, and an excellent instructor, which makes the whole exercise painless and fun. He complemented me on my flying, saying it was in the blood (Dad was a Fleet Air Arm pilot). I keep telling myself he doesn’t tell everyone that - well, that’s my story! Chris and Jan’s business is fairly new to the area, and they have lots of plans to expand and develop, and we sincerely wish them the very best of luck. If you like the thrill of real flying, perhaps with a view to taking it further, or just fancy an air experience flight and see the beautiful countryside of our adopted country from only a few thousand feet up, then treat yourself, or someone you know (they do gift vouchers) - I can heartily recommend it! Nice birthday treat, thanks, love! Oh, and the flight was brilliant!

“ Get on yer bike.” Monthly cycling tips / advice and routes. by Gary and Lynn “Cyclogical” Quesada.

“Quesada to Benejuzur” Distance : 44kms / Time : Allow 4 Hours Leave Quesada by the Arches go round the large roundabout and come off at the cycle track which runs along the side of the dual carriageway towards Torrevieja but instead of going on the cycle track take the tarred road that runs parallel to the right of it along past Alonso’s garage. Stay on this Camino / Canal road (the canal is to your left under the concrete slabs) and pass over a hump back bridge just before you enter La Herrada. Carry straight on through La Herrada, straight on at the roundabouts until you come to signs saying Camino / Canal road no entry. Carry straight on until you come to a main road junction (which is the main road to Zoco Market) go straight across and again follow the Camino road to the next junction. This time turn right (this is the main road to Algorfa and La Finca). Cycle for 1.2kms uphill past a large sign saying Contra Vega & also a few street lights, pass over the AP7 and then about 200metres on your left you will see the start of the canal road . Follow this canal all the way until you come to the road to Entre Naranjos. Turn right here and cycle right to the top until you come to the new Golf course / Bowling green, carry on past the golf course and follow the fence all the way down the unfinished road, following it round to the left once you see an old sort of quarry in front of you cycle straight through it until you pick up another camino (road) this one is tarred. Follow this road all the way downhill until you come to the town of Benejuzar (A beautiful ride down) cycle through the town and head for the river at the river turn right and cycle all the way back to Benijofar or Rojales where you should be able to find your way home from there. All routes are now available from our website on www.cyclogicalcostablanca.com Gary and Lynn are available at “CYCLOGICAL” in Quesada, Monday to Friday from 9.30am till 5.30pm and from 10.00am till 2.00pm on a Saturday to assist and advise you on all your cycling requirements including route maps. Jeannie’s going up the wall They say “talk the talk or walk the walk” and Jeannie Ashford is definitely in the second category. She is not quite “up the wall” yet but will be in October when she participates in an event organised by a non-profit making organisation which enables selective individuals to raise money for recognised charities - it’s called the China Trek and extends for 10 days across some fairly inhospitable terrain including the Great Wall. A little background and explanation. Jeannie came to Spain and settled in Hondon de los Frailes almost 9 years ago, went through the normal trials and tribulations that all of us expats have experienced and became a recognised interface between the village and new arrivals, helping them navigate through the systems on a regular basis at the Frailes town hall. Two years ago Jeannie experienced what every woman dreads, unexplained discomfort and pain.In her own words she is extremely thankful that this happened in Spain where she was rapidly diagnosed by a system known as CA125 (Tumour markers) as having developed ovarian cancer. Jeannie openly admits that we would not have been able to have this conversation had this system not been in place and feels a huge debt of gratitude to the hospitals in Elda and Elche. Two years on, Jeannie is in full remission and now wants to give something back. Hence, the China Trek. As mentioned previously, this event is organised by a non-profit making organisation and the initial costs are funded by the participants. The initial funding has now been raised but Jeannie is aiming to generate significant funding for both Ovarian Cancer Action and medical facilities in Spain which, undoubtedly, saved her life. Ovarian cancer is probably the greatest single/silent killer of all. It can strike women of any age group and the mortality rate sees less than one in five survive, mainly due to the inability to diagnose the condition at an early stage. Diagnostic equipment, understanding and dedicated teams are urgently needed. Jeannie’s China Trek is being actively supported in the Hondons, sponsorship sheets are available at many local bars, restaurants and retail outlets or you can pledge a donation on-line at action4ovariancan@yahoo.com or on the dedicated link on the TIM website. Jeannie will be carrying out many fundraising events over the coming months. You can see her first at the Frailes Royal Wedding celebrations on 29th April where she will be hosting a Tombola stall. Prize donations would be gratefully appreciated. Just think – if every TIM reader pledged just one euro? Or five? Or even ten? Thanks in advance from Dennis and the TIM team. 12

TIM Magazine™ Caravaca de la Cruz sits high in the north west section of Murcia. Picturesque, and yet largely undiscovered, this area is finally attracting foreign property purchasers. Caravaca is by far the largest of the towns in the vicinity. It stands out from afar in a countryside that is very green. The present look of Caravaca is due to many years of Arab domination. The town has many historic buildings. Outstanding among these is the castle that is perched high above the myriad of steep lanes and streets that are home to some very pretty houses. The Museum of Religious Art and History attracts many tourists who want to see its most famous artefact, the Caballos del Vino, or wine horses.

Caravaca de la Cruz by Vernon Grant

The coach parties drive all this way for a reason and it is because Caravaca de la Cruz is officially the fifth holiest City in the world. Along with Santiago de Compostela, Santo Toribio de Liébana, Rome and Jerusalem it is permitted to celebrate the perpetual jubilee once every seven years. A few kilometers drive away you will come across other, smaller villages and towns. Without question, the prettiest is Moratalla. This is a lovely town. Charming, friendly and colourful. Many of the houses are for sale. Debbie and Marcus Jenkins have bought there. Moratalla is 107 kilometres from their main home near Corvera. They plan to renovate a three storey town house in Moratalla that has uninterrupted views. It cost them just 50.000 Euros. They will divide the house into two rental properties. It is, says Debbie, “our pension.” Debbie knows Murcia so well that she has published a book on the place. ‘Going Native in Murcia’ has sold well and provides a thorough introduction to the province I asked Debbie about the landscape of this part of Murcia? She says: “The group of towns in the North West that include Moratalla are wonderfully quaint, with narrow winding streets and tumble down town houses. Then to the North there is the Ricote Valley, which was the last stronghold of the Moors in Spain, and is one of the most beautiful and undiscovered parts of Murcia, along the fertile plains of the river Segura.” A short drive away, through beautiful countryside, is the town of Calasparra. Here rice is the driving force of local business. Not just any ordinary rice, but the first in the world to have been awarded a “Denominacion de Origen” – a guarantee of top quality. If wine, and not rice, is your thing then head further north to Jumilla and Yecla. The latter is the northern most town in Murcia and is famous for its wine production. Live here and you may want to buy in plenty of the local produce. The town boasts far more churches than it does cafes, bars or restaurants. Jumilla produces many fine Rose and Red wines and the town has numerous bodegas and wine shops that are popular with coach parties. At fiesta time the wine even flows from the fountains in the town. So if you have a thirst for unspoiled inland destinations, I suggest you first taste memorable Murcia. 14

ARE YOU HAVING CONCENTRACÍON PROBLEMS? Well it’s the time of year when bikers in Spain turn their thoughts to organising and attending a concentracíon or two. For those who haven’t had the pleasure it’s what us Brits would call a rally. They are a bit different with that unique Spanish take on things with beer, wine and food very much to the fore. Exotic dancers also figure and there is usually a ride out. Like the UK the quality and cost varies greatly and you really have to do one if you’re biking here. A couple of words of warning, if you’re a big lad the rally T shirts won’t fit and you’ll probably see the same stalls at all of the rallies. They can be great fun, best with biking buddies of course.

April concentraciones near us are at Pinoso 10th, at the Polideportivo, 8€. Alhama de Murcia 29th-1st May, 43€ for the weekend, includes camping. Llombai, Valencia 30th. Custom Club Equites are showing their colours with free food and drink. Also on www.tumotoweb.com a weekend in Mallorca, ferry from Denia on Friday 15th through Sunday. A big question is the advertised cost – 19€. But if you’re interested have a look. Also worth a look is www.concentracionesdemotos. com

By Jack Dees Not many biker caffs suggested, thanks Steve from Monovar for pointing out the one on the winding road from Aspe to Crevillent. Always lots of bikes on a Sunday, but often Guardia as well. Looking for biking buddies are Barbie in Onil, with a 2L drag Harley and wants to go to rallies and Clare from Barinas who rides a Harley. Worth a look is Ken’s documentary of a trip on a 125 cc scooter from Albatera to England. Yeah, I know rather him

than me, but well done Ken www.webvideodevon.co.uk/ Spain. Thanks to those eagle eyed readers who pointed out the typo last month. It should have read Pinoso is several hundred metres higher than Fortuna. Keep the requests/info coming folks www.harleysinspain@ yahoo.com. Happy Riding, JD

Spanish Tax

The Facts - Part 2 By Rob Innis talking to Ignacio of Pellicer and Heredia This month, following on from last month’s article on income tax, we look at Inheritance Tax (IHT) and Capital Gains Tax (CGT) I would again like to thank Ignacio of Pellicer and Heredia for supplying the facts about these confusing taxes. Fortunately, he speaks perfect English (as does many of his staff) and he has also worked in London and so understands the UK tax system. You can often see very worrying headlines written about the huge tax bills that you will face with both IHT and CGT. Ignacio explained that for many people these tax liabilities would be very low. It all depends on the following factors: • Resident or non-resident (And in which Community) • Fiscally resident in Spain • Age • How many years you have owned the property • Total value of your world wide estate • The relationships between the benefactor and the inheritors (distant relatives or friends could face a higher tax bill on their inheritance) • Did the inheritors live in Spain with the benefactor? How long? The Valencia region is one of the most generous in Spain when it comes to the allowances given by the tax office regarding these taxes. For example, in Communidad Valencia (CV) you could even get 99% off if the person who dies and their heirs are resident in Spain. This is for ‘first grade’, which is husband/wife and any children, but only on the first property.

many issues involved. Ignacio also advised that there are many different options for people who think that they might be ultimately facing a large tax bill. Therefore, it is always a good idea to talk to the professionals so that they can understand the situation and make specific recommendations based on an individual’s personal circumstances. Sometimes it is worth it to split the life interest and keep it and sell the legal ownership to a third party depending on the personal wishes. It is very important to understand that IHT will always depend on different factors, and therefore will vary accordingly. It is recommended that people who are concerned speak to their solicitor to get accurate advice on inheritance planning. Nevertheless, it is very important to understand that it is wrong to assume automatically that these tax bills will be high without taking professional advice and maybe making some changes in your current financial planning and arrangements. I recently advised a friend to talk to Ignacio and after she had done so, she certainly much better understood her situation and had some options to consider and discuss with her family. Other financial planning issues include making a will and appointing executors. This will make the process of sorting out the estate of the deceased much less traumatic for the surviving relatives. In addition, of course, will ensure that only the minimal taxes are paid and the knowledgeable experts deal

with all confusing matters correctly and professionally. Pellicer and Heredia (see their advert on the front cover) are currently making a special offer to all TIM readers. You can arrange to have an introductory first meeting for FREE to help you better understand any tax liabilities that you have. If you decide to instruct them to act, they will then clearly quote their professional fees. A wise investment in time and money, which could save you thousands of euros and/or pounds in tax. They also offer a full range of legal services including conveyancing, defective and illegal construction claims and traffic registration (Spanish driving licences, vehicles etc) and well as all legal expertise. They currently have four offices spread throughout the region. Contact information is on the front cover. Or see here http://www.pellicerheredia.com/ en/default.aspx

Stop Press: Since we drafted this article headlines have appeared that the EU have requested Spain to review ways of changing the IHT tax laws so that non-residents are not made to pay tax at higher rates than residents do. However, no changes have yet been implemented. But this can only be potentially good news for nonresidents.

If the person who died was resident in Spain and the heir was non-resident but was first grade (spouse or children), they could even get 95% off on the first property (this applies on the whole country, not only CV) with the condition of not selling within 10 years. So for instance if a spouse or child of the deceased inherits then the tax bill will be extremely low of maybe even zero. It all depends on the above factors. It is very difficult to be precise about everyone’s potential liabilities given all the 18

Spanish Moving Story - Part Two

The Inland Magazine™

22

The policeman was great, he handled the situation well, saying helpful things like ‘Senor, simpatico’, with his hand on his chest, as if it wasn’t his fault: but the message was loud and clear, albeit in Spanish, via a form he filled out and gave me, that I would have to take to the Town Hall to sort it all out. Godzilla went inside, still giving it up to anyone who would listen, but the grandstand melted away and we all parted company. I went back to further serious inquisitions inside, this time English ones. Later I tidied up the partially built patio (Bill hadn’t got far), and we went back. I never actually saw Godzilla again, ‘Manuel’, her other half however often came for long holidays over the next few years: I tried, with limited success to make friends with him, but spanglishing about the weather was about as far as we ever got. I got to spend a lot of time at the Town Hall, where I learnt a lot, but slowly and I quietly finished the patio eventually when no-one was looking, where it remains to this day. Needless to say, I had some ‘afters’ with that merchant banker of an agent when I first returned home, the tithead who sold me the house, involving the ‘planning permission’ paperwork he had so generously supplied me with. We had a few blistering phone conversations during which I threatened to sue him, which I had every intention of doing at the time. He insisted I should have checked it all, it was my fault, not his – when I asked him if he spoke and read Spanish he said ‘No, not really.’ I pointed out that this could be a handicap, when selling Spanish property: he was at best incompetent, and at worst a crook, I told him. He then threatened me with deformation of character, and it began to get nasty. I phoned an English lawyer who specialised in such Spanish matters, who advised me that I would need to sue the useless idiot in a Spanish court, which could be costly, very time-consuming and very hard work. I might even win, but would I get my costs back? The lawyer gently suggested that up to that point, it had not cost me a lot, financially if not emotionally but it could then cost me a great deal, including stress and time as well as money. I took his advice, and put it down to experience - or lack of it, as my witty ex-boss always said. That’s not quite the end of the story. One day during the next year, I was working up in Yorkshire. I knew the previous owners name and address, he lived in a small village just outside Leeds. About ten o’clock one morning I knocked at his door, and a short, older man came to the door in his vest (and trousers). I introduced myself and

asked him his version of what really happened, and how he came to sell. He told me he and his wife were original pioneers to Spain, via MASA. They loved the house, spent some money on it, as I can testify, and had several long holidays per year there for the first few years. They had both retired, and had children and grandchildren who also enjoyed their house in the sun. Initially at least, it seemed they got on famously with their Spanish neighbours, exchanging gifts and spending time in each other’s houses. But the entente cordial didn’t last, and it seemed the English building of a big rear raised patio on the back, which butted onto the original Spanish front one did not go down well, and noise became an issue from both sides. Rowdy English grandchildren and loud music did not mix well with equally loud Spanish TV. The crunch came one night, I believe, when the son of the Yorkshireman, out on holiday with his young family, banged on the wall to appeal for lesser TV volume, as the kids were trying to sleep and couldn’t. Getting nowhere, and still not by ringing the bell at the gate, he climbed over walls from patio to patio and pounded the front door, and when it opened he demanded they turn the TV down or off. Apparently you just do not go onto people’s property in Spain like that; even the police hesitate to do so, and it didn’t go down well. Shortly after the English family had all gone home to the UK, my man received a call from a neighbour in Spain, saying his patio had been smashed down with a sledgehammer, and his property stored under the patio was open to the elements and theft. He dropped everything and came out to Spain but acrimony rained. He sued Godzilla and Manuel, someone testified they saw the Spaniard in action with his sledgehammer, and the Yorkshireman won his case: but on appeal, this was reversed, he finally lost and any permission he had previously was revoked. His wife, who had dearly loved her Spanish casa, was so upset by it all she went into a nursing home to convalesce with her nerves and resolved never to set foot in Spain again. So very reluctantly my man decided to sell, somehow picking the world’s worst estate agent to sell it for him – cue John! I think I was the first and only buyer to actually see it in a year! The rest of the house was brilliant, and I got my little patio eventually; I still have it thirteen years later. I don’t live in it here as it’s too small, but it has proved the best housing investment of my life. I love it, it has very happy memories for me, and I can actually laugh now about the patio incident and the planning permission – or lack of it!.

The Book Club, which was launched in 2009, is aimed at promoting débuts and brand name authors. One of the joys is that you discover new aspects of each other, or you may rediscover a connection you had at the beginning but have lost as life gradually takes over,” says Ella Berthoud, one of the therapists. “It can also help couples communicate and understand each other better, as well as show new ways to share leisure time.” Depends on the book? The book starts and ends in 1996 so we see how their Spanish experiences, both on and off duty, affect the rest of their lives. An enjoyable historical fiction read written by a knowledgeable author. I find it a very useful site and have set up a group for Spain Expats to share reviews etc. For more visit the site at http://www. shelfari.com/ Regular readers may recall that I have previously mentioned ‘Book Army’ a similar site that has unfortunately been closed down and so is no longer online. The e-book Reader War Continues both online and in the shops. In the UK Asda are claiming to be selling Britain’s low priced eReader at just £52, available via its online selling operation. An Asda representative said, “That works out at just 1 pound a week.” Difficult to argue with his maths. Whilst WH Smiths, determined to stay in the game, are offering the next cheapest device on the market the Imagin reader for £59.99. Waterstone’s sells the colour e-book reader Elonex at £79.99. However, the original – the Kindle, may soon be available free. This amazing fact is being rumoured on some sites but the catch is you may have to agree to purchase a set amount of eBooks. Reminds me of the old book clubs. Looks like even eBook retailing goes around the same circle. Competition to win a FREE book This month you have the opportunity to win a free copy of top author Dean Koontz’s Life Expectancy. “The master of our darkest dreams” (The Times) With his best selling blend of nail-biting intensity, daring artistry, and storytelling magic, Dean Koontz returns with an emotional roller coaster of a tale filled with enough twists, turns, shocks, and surprises for ten ordinary novels. Are you ready to move out of your ‘Comfort Zone’ ?

Nick Venn DipPFS, Senior Private Client Adviser

We enjoy researching and placing together investment portfolios for our Clients, yet measuring an individual’s “attitude to risk” requires a detailed discussion and the appropriate research, examining where the Client sits between the perimeters of ‘Risk adverse and Speculative’ and it is reasonable to accept the old adage of ‘risk versus reward’, where those that are happy to accept significant risk to their capital within an investment portfolio, will be provided with the potential of higher investment returns. On a lighter note, many clients want high returns without taking any risk to their capital, all sounds just too good to be true! The client’s acceptance of risk is whether they are prepared to witness their capital drop in value over the short, medium and long term. Their own risk assessment can lead to investment in different types of products or funds and you may well be offered Government backed Deposit Savings, Bank Deposit Accounts, Gilts, Corporate Bonds, Structured Products, Collective Unit Trusts or OEICS, Specialist Collectives (ie: Property or Emerging Markets), Individual Equities and 26

Restaurante Rebate Launch Spring Menu The Rebate Restaurant recently launched their spring menu, placing much emphasis on organically grown produce much of which is available to purchase from their recently opened “organicâ€? shop adjacent to the church. In their lovely restaurant, in the heart of the countryside but only 10 miles or so from the coast, we were treated to a feast fit for royalty. The food and service were second to none. The meal was superb. The chocolate desserts were to die for; the Solomillo was sublime!! We were greeted with Cava, supplied by Bodegas Serrano, near Cartagena, apparently the only bodega in the Province of Murcia producing Cava. Every course was accompanied by one of their many different table wines and a dessert wine complimented the final course. Rebate has their own church within the grounds and an excellent function room next to the restaurant. Everything you could possibly need for a perfect wedding. So, if you just happen to be planning yours, before you do anything else, speak to Dawne on their dedicated weddings telephone number to discuss your plans, or if you simply want a meal, a cut above most, call the restaurant to reserve a table. People who were born in this section of the year have unusually strong will power and great obstinacy of purpose. They are usually born to be fighters in every sense of the world: they have also the greatest ability as organizers on a large scale. They find themselves as the organizers of big schemes or as the heads of big businesses, and also in the organization and development of countries. They seem naturally to resent all criticism, and the only way to offset this in them is by quiet logic, reason, and proof. These people are usually independent in everything they do. It is really important for them to do everything in their own way, and if they are intervene with other people they generally loose the shapes of the main purpose, step back and let the other person take their place.

There’s never been a better time to make a bold proposal. It doesn’t matter if people shot you down in the past. This time, your ideas will be eagerly received. It’s all about anticipating the public’s needs. Right now, some are willing to be lured out of familiar surroundings and thrust into an exotic environment. If there’s anyone who can do this well, it’s you. Taking an exotic trip is a distinct possibility. You’d make a great tour guide in a faraway land.

Trust your instincts about a relative or neighbour. They may pretend nothing is wrong, but their actions suggest otherwise. Slipping an envelope with cash in the mail might be the best way to help. Of course, you should do this anonymously. That way, your relationship won’t be affected. Even a little offering can make a tremendous difference. An intelligent bureaucrat can push your paperwork through the system quickly, provided you give them the proper respect. Send a little gift after the mission is accomplished.

You manage to maintain your enthusiasm, regardless of the problems you face. No wonder you’re so popular! When the leader’s confidence starts to fail, they will turn to you for help. Somehow, you’ll assuage their fears. Getting in shape is becoming an increasingly important goal. Martial arts will give you the mental and physical activity you crave. Before you know it, you’ll be able to go twice as far in half the time.

At long last, you’re getting favourable publicity for your leadership ability. In the past, people either thought you were too quiet to be an effective executive or believed you were too bossy to yield good results. Now you have a chance to prove all of your critics wrong. Cutting edge technology will make all the difference. Spring for a new computer or machine that will help you do twice the work in half the time. The people paying the bills will grumble at first, but will thank you later.

You’re willing to break new ground, even at the risk of being ridiculed. There’s something so unfair about an organisation that only extends its benefits to a certain group. Fortunately, you’re in an ideal position to revise the rules so everyone is included. The people in charge will have a hard time arguing with your logic. Besides, you’re so persuasive that you make even the most stubborn bigots forget their prejudices. Go ahead and turn on the charm.

A sexy flirt makes you wonder if there’s more to bond you than just friendship. Your suspicions are correct; the person in question has fallen hard for your charms. Between your classic style and tremendous intelligence, you’re a virtual love magnet. Feel free to pursue this romance, provided you’re single. If you already have a lover, you may want to put some spice back into your relationship. Plan a quiet night in together.

Let a friend or lover talk you into a plan you’d never consider on your own. It’s time to push the envelope, no matter how scary the prospect. Testing your mental powers against others will give you a boost of confidence. You’re a lot smarter than you realise. If you enter a contest, you’re sure to win, especially if you’re able to work with a partner. The two of you communicate in a kind of shorthand that is impressive to watch.

You’re making real headway with an important job, which will lead to other work opportunities. This is great news, as you could use some extra cash right now. Fortunately, people are willing to pay a great deal for your services. That’s what happens when you’re the best. If you have to lose a little weight, try getting a little more aerobic exercise. Swimming is a great way to get in shape without putting a lot of strain on your joints.

Embarking on an adventure with a lover or loved ones will be more fun than you think. You’re tired of doing the same thing day after day. Taking a car trip or trying a new sport will bring a little variety back into your life. Best of all, you’ll be able to share the fun with someone who is just as enthusiastic as you. There will probably be an element of danger involved with what you do. Try to reassure your family you won’t be hurt.

Use your powerful feelings as a launching pad to a new adventure. Lately, you’ve wanted to make a change. Little things about your home life have been driving you crazy. You’ve even been fighting with a relative or roommate. The solution may be a bigger place to live. Alternatively, you may need to move to a livelier neighbourhood. One thing is certain: You need a change of scenery. Find a place where you can put your talents to good use.

Gaining membership to an exclusive club is easier than you think. You may not realise it, but you have lots of friends who are willing to speak on your behalf. Just because your background is different from most of the other members doesn’t mean you have nothing in common. When it comes right down to it, you share lots of qualities with the group in question. For one thing, you are always looking for ways to improve institutions and businesses.

Taking a class on business management can increase your earning potential. You’ve always been good at crafting desirable products and advertising your wares. When it comes to finances you need a little help. Arm yourself with knowledge. Knowing the best ways to spend your resources will help you withstand tough times in the economy, while maximising your bottom line. Want a raise? Ask for it now, when your value to the organisation is beyond dispute.

TIM Magazine™ It’s simple - makeup is a girl’s best friend! It’s great to explore and experiment when applying your makeup and to make yourself look different by doing so. You can either go the whole way or aim for a more simplistic and naturalistic look. Personally, I love the elegant fresh looking appliance of makeup where it’s applying in a simple yet perfectionist way. It makes you look like you are natural and they say less is more – and very rightly so! To apply your makeup naturally you firstly need to find a foundation that suits your skin tone exactly. It’s also a tip to not apply any blusher, but if it’s one of your necessities, then use a more subtle blusher that is soft and not tonally bright. What you need to do is ensure that the blusher doesn’t stand out as this would make you look more like a clown – which isn’t a good look!

How to be creative when applying your makeup by Gemma Smith

You then need to forget about applying eyeliner as your eyes generally don’t appear dark so a touch of mascara will do the job. When applying your mascara ensure your lashes are going in the direction of outwards away from your eyes which will create less of a “fake” look. My biggest tip for the natural look is to lastly apply a lip-gloss, but preferably lipstick, which is close to your skin colour so perhaps a peachy colour just to add that final glow. You will then find your face looking natural as ever but with enhanced features making you stand out from the crowd. Many of us are critical of ourselves and try to disguise the parts that we don’t like so by emerging our skin with makeup – we think – does the trick...but we are mistaken! What you will find is that you may make yourself stand out too much which means a lot of the genuine focus when you are out and about will be on you. This will then enable many people to judge you and search for your worst parts so, in turn, will have the opposite effect to the one that’s originally desired. Another plus point with layering less makeup on is that when you decide to have a crazy night out you will stand out more than the other people your with as you will look totally different. You will impress and leave people mystified as to what changes you have made. This is because you’ll probably find most of your friends applying the same amount of makeup every day and in the same way so eventually their appearance will become boring and plain. It’s less pressure on your shoulders when you don’t have as much makeup on, it’s cheaper, and it takes less time! You win all around! Go on, go for it, be creative, have fun, and be daring. Make sure it’s YOU that are different and stand out for the RIGHT reasons!!

Hondon Valley Golf Society DAVE BRATLEY WINS GOLD FOR SECOND TIME IN FOUR OUTINGS

The Society Handicap Secretary, Dave Bratley, a winner at the end of 2010 at Alicante Golf recorded another gold success this time at El Plantio. On a sunny, dry day, made difficult by a cool north easterly wind, Dave scored 25 Stableford points. Bernard Cox won silver and Will Moro bronze scoring 24 and 25 points respectively. Eight fourballs tee-ed off at El Plantio from 10 am onwards in bright sunshine. This was a huge bonus considering the pessimistic nature of the weather forecast that included everything bar a plague of frogs! The one thing the forecasters did get right was the strong wind warning which, although it did have an impact on the low scores returned, served to keep the dreaded rain away. Captain John was keen to get members’ blood running early by deciding to award a prize for the Longest Drive on Hole 1. In addition to the usual prizes, he had also decided to reward winners of the Best Front and Back Nine scores. El Plantio has always been a popular venue for HVGS. The addition of new bunkers on some holes, notably the 9th and the 18th, were not to the liking of some members who felt the changes did not improve the course. But it was a large tree in the rough left of the fairway on the 1st Hole not a new bunker that made life difficult for one lady guest player who managed to drive her ball and wedge it in the lower reaches of the tree. In the Matchplay Knockout Peter Lowe (1Up) narrowly beat Clive Dalton on the final hole. Captain John presented the prizes in the well-appointed Clubhouse following a short discussion after which the members decided overwhelmingly to support the May 13th Charity Golf Day in aid of Paul Cunningham Nurses. For information on how to join HVGS contact the Secretary, Jim Lynch, on 666208416 or email jamesandsue.lynch@ gmail.com . To reserve your place on the list for the Society Golf Days contact the Captain, John Wilkinson, on 965475162 and 634821903 or e-mail glynwilkie@yahoo.co.uk .

Stop Press The golf day in May has changed from Tuesday 10th May to Friday 13th May when the HVGS and other local societies are taking part in a Charity Golf Day at Alenda in aid of Paul Cunningham Nurses.

CAMPO GOLF SOCIETY On a lovely bright day, the February Campo golf day was held at Alenda. Although there was a fairly low turn-out due to family commitments of both English and Dutch members, an enjoyable day was had by all. The course was in its usual good condition with the fairways lush and green but there were some strange swathes of brown grass either side leading to the holes. Not something we had seen before. Martin Taylor was the overall winner carding 31 points and the winning guest was Fermin Brana, also coming in with 31 points. Well done to them both. The committee is currently looking at venues for further “away days” in the area. Further details will follow shortly. The club membership is currently in a healthy condition and, with the summer months approaching, it is hoped this will continue to improve.

Once again, we have to report that some members are not phoning their non-attendance through to one of the committee members causing problems on the day. PLEASE ring someone and let them know! RESULTS WINNER N/P 3RD HOLE - N/P 5TH HOLE N/P 16TH HOLE GUEST WINNER

Winging it! By Chris Pickles. (Sol-aero Flyers)

A View from the pilot’s seat

Ok, so which of the above is a microlight? Stupid question really, except it’s not! The first one is a Quicksilver from the seventies, it has a top speed of very slow, an endurance of about 90mins, and is of course a microlight. The second one is a Moragon M1 Stela, mine in fact! It has a top speed of about 110 knots, with an endurance of an incredible 5 hours. And it is also a microlight! Surprised? Well the third one is the amazingly sexy TL2000 Sting, with a top speed of 150knots, retractable gear and variable prop as options. And yes, it’s a microlight, and I so want one!! The word microlight is an outdated term that conjures up images of a kite nailed to a lawnmower, but the actual definition of a microlight is that it has no more than two seats, has a maximum take off weight of no more than 450kg, and a stall speed of no more than 32 knots. In the seventies, this was only just achievable with machines like the Quickie, but now…carbon fibre, lighter, more powerful engines, and computerized instrumentation have allowed today’s micro’s to evolve into superb aircraft. So, how do they fly? Well, exactly the same as traditional Cessna’s and Pipers only faster, sharper, and safer. In fact I think they are more

involving, the extra agility of the aircraft requiring more positive control inputs, and faster responses from the pilot. Climbing out of my M1 into a Cessna is akin to getting out of a Ford Focus into a Transit van. The microlight license can be achieved in as little as 25 hours, and will cost you about three grand all in. Better still, a microlight license counts towards your training if you want to fly the bigger stuff. After that, if you’re keen, owning your own aircraft is probably cheaper than you think. There are models to suit all budgets. The Sting? Well if you need to ask, you probably can’t afford it! At the other end of the scale there are still plenty of Quickies flying for probably less than the price of a good lawnmower!! Seriously though, twenty thousand euros will buy you a very nice, aircraft with running costs of no more than a family car. Many pilots buy planes in a group, sharing the cost, maintenance, insurance etc between the shareholders. Our corner of Spain with it’s 300 plus days a year of sunshine is perfect for flying. You don’t need a licensed airfield to fly microlights. A suitable strip of land, with the owner’s permission is all that’s required, and there are plenty of those in the local area, and over 1000 that I am aware of in Spain, some in the most spectacular surroundings. If you fancy a trial flight, or want to treat a loved one to a special gift, contact the Sol-aero flyers! Until next time, Chocks away!!
