Something new... Why don’t you… Rent... Ten years after Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe brought us the historical epic that was the Gladiator, the pair are reunited with Robin Hood. The production, acting and general feel of the film is very good and Ridley Scott delivers his usual package of slow motion action shots and over-thetop scale. However history buffs should be aware that this is far from an accurate film, so take a few visuals and certain narrative points with a pinch of salt… and of course Crowe’s notorious Irish accent Browse... The word harvest actually comes from the Anglo Saxon language meaning autumn. So, as the leaves turn at this traditionally fruitful time of year, get yourself to a farmers market to savour the final treats garnered from the earth over the summer months. Listen.... It seems 2010 is one of those years that produces a plethora of talent from the female singer/ songwriter camp, a trend Lauren Prichard has maintained with ‘Wasted in Jackson.’ The debut effort from the 22 year old from Tennessee is an intricately crafted soul record laced with a mix of heartbreaking lyrics and uplifting rhythms. With a voice that could stand up alongside some of the best soul artists from the 70’s this album doesn’t disappoint. £7.99 Amazon.co.uk Swipe… When the Mackintosh computer arrived in the 80’s, Apple pretty much introduced the mouse to the masses. Scrap Gold Rush... Can you really trust Internet or ‘cash for gold’ organisations? No doubt you will be aware of the absolute abundance of adverts in the press and on TV encouraging you to post off your unwanted gold to a ‘cash for gold’ organisation. Of course they all promise that they could make you a fortune!

a below market price, usually a very under market price! You accept or decline the offer. Unfortunately, if you decline the offer the chances of receiving your gold back are small or if it is returned you can be in for a long wait.

Simply pop your unwanted gold into an envelope and wait for the cheque is the promise on offer, however due to the growing number of complaints received by Trading Standards, before even thinking about sending your gold in the post just take time to think about the following:

A safe and honest service

Can I trust who I am sending the gold to? Will I get a fair price and do they publish their per gram price? What happens if my gold gets lost? How do I know if I will get my gold back if I refuse to accept their offer price? Typically, this is how the postal system works: You post your gold expecting to get the best price per gram. They send you a cheque for

8

At Berridges we will be clear from the start what we are prepared to offer you for your scrap gold and state clearly our per gram price. We will weigh your gold in the shop so you are clear as to what the gold weight total is. We will test your gold if necessary and make you an on the spot offer. If you are happy we pay by cash or cheque. All we ask is for proof of identity. I would imagine most ladies have a collection of broken chains and earrings in their jewellery boxes which are worth in excess of £100, so why not bring it in? We will make you a fair offer, but if you decide not to sell you can leave and still have your jewellery firmly in your hand! Christopher Hardman Berridges

Christmas party... Party Time... Small or large, company Christmas parties can be a talking point for weeks on end. If you’re organising this year’s event, don’t despair - here are some tips to help you along your way. Pleasing everyone at a Christmas party is nigh on impossible, but pleasing the majority is an aim that can be achieved. Ipswich and its surrounding areas offer a multitude of possibilities for a festive do, ranging from lavish events suiting companies wanting something quite extravagant to tasty meals for those smaller companies wishing to have an intimate and relaxed evening . There’s even something for those wanting to try their hand at karoke, murder mystery or the casino table. When organising an office event there are four key aspects to consider: the date, the venue, the menu and the entertainment. Some tips and advice are included below. The Date Booking a date for the Christmas party, especially in a large company, is fraught with problems and there will always be people who are unable to come. If you

are part of a larger office, the best thing to do is book a date and tell everyone weeks in advance. If you’re organising a smaller company’s Christmas party however, you could begin preparation by asking around for suitable dates and go with the consensus. Most companies prefer to book their Christmas parties before Christmas, although there are many venues that hold events

right through to late January. The most popular dates are those in the middle of December and if you’re really keen to hold your event then, it’s well worth trying to book two or three months ahead. Most offices like to hold the event on a Friday and Saturday night

13

(and the prices of most venues reflect this), but there are weekday and lunch options as well. The Venue When booking your venue bear in mind those that don’t live in the same vicinity as the company’s headquarters and try to be as accommodating as possible with a central venue. Options range in price and size and depend upon whether you want to attend a shared party or take over a venue for a private party. Being part of a larger group

of parties has its advantages as often the entertainment is more extravagant, but smaller and intimate parties also have their benefits. Suffolk has a large variety of pubs, restaurants and larger venues to accommodate office events. For those wanting to join in a larger party, Trinity Park at the

14

Suffolk Showground could be an option. Last year it offered a ferris wheel, scalectrix and wii activities with a three course meal and this year its general theme is ‘Hollywood Nights at Trinity Park’ with a steam carousal, themed activities and a Hollywood film style menu. Ipswich town football club also offers shared or private events with live bands and/or discos and the ability to include extra entertainment. Hintlesham Hall, Seckford Hall and Fynn Valley golf club are other venues offering options. This area is also full of quirky pubs and bars offering a variety of beautiful scenery, interesting décor, tasty local food and fun entertainment particularly suited for smaller companies. Issacs on the waterfront boasts a remarkable history and marine views while pubs in the surrounding villages such as the Moon and Mushroom at Swilland, the Brewery Tap in Ipswich, the Tuddenham Fountain, the Levington Ship and the range of pubs under the Deben Inns umbrella - could also provide a comforting and intimate atmosphere. Whatever sort of venue you go for it’s worth finding out some basic information to tell your guests: the start and finish/ opening and closing time, the dress code, local transport links and perhaps recommended accommodation for those guests who live further afield.

The Menu If you decide to go along the traditional route and include food at your Christmas party there’s a variety of different menus on offer around Ipswich: the traditional turkey and stuffing will be served at most pubs and restaurants but it’s also worth considering more exotic cuisines available at speciality restaurants such as Indian, Thai, Chinese, or Italian. It’s vital to ask about your guests’ dietary requirements and ensure that your venue can accommodate these. A vegetarian option is normally provided but vegans and allergy sufferers may require further attention. Drinks are also a large part of any Christmas party and you can choose whether you wish for guests to pay for their own or if the company will open up a free bar. Sometimes the latter may not be a viable choice and making guests pay for their own drinks could end up saving some bashful faces the next Monday morning. Another option is to limit the amount of free drinks or to just provide one free drink as they arrive, or drinks with the meal. The Entertainment Many venues now provide excellent entertainment, either making this the central theme of the night or just a small part. As mentioned above, many venues provide discos, live bands or karoke and nowadays there are

also a variety of other entertainment options on offer: wine tasting, casino nights and

murder mysteries are just a few that companies wanting something a little different may wish to try. If you don’t fancy these - why not create your own fun? Secret Santa, a themed/costume night or homemade dinner games usually go down well. Whatever you decide, it’s important to bear your guests in mind: there’s no point organising an extravagant and expensive affair if most people would rather just go to the local pub. Most importantly of all, remember to have fun, relax and enjoy a social evening with your colleagues.

A pub with great food...

16

Dining at The Tuddenham Fountain is always a pleasure with its reassuringly good service and keenly priced menu the self-styled ‘pub with great food’ offers one of the most rewarding dining experiences around. The Fountain was once the haunt of the cartoonist Carl Giles, who created the iconic character of ‘Grandma’ and lived in the nearby village of Witnersham. The proprietors Scott Davidson and Charles Lewis in his honour selected the numerous cartoons that now hang on the walls. The pub has a traditional interior and extensive garden and in the summer a vast umbrella that is just perfect for ‘al fresco’ dining. There’s also plenty of parking, clear air and a feeling of having escaped from it all when you are only a stone’s throw from Ipswich. The menu is seasonal, well priced and offers great value. Indeed the pub has been keen to keep the prices as low as possible and still manage to offer dishes that have not increased in price for the last two years. Quite a feat when you consider that quality hasn’t been compromised. Food is served at the following times: lunchtimes noon till last orders at 2.00pm, and dinner 6.00pm with last orders 9.00pm, or Saturday till 9.30 pm and Sunday noon till

3pm. You can also book a table, something that although isn’t new is worth remembering. The dishes on offer are immediately appealing and the wine list accessible with an additional selection of delicious specials. From the main menu dishes such as Chargrilled Grilled Cheddar Cheese 8oz Burgers (£8.95) are available alongside Roast Corn Fed Chicken Breast (£12.95) and Grilled Fillet of Sea Bass and Seared Scallops (£13.75). We chose from the main menu on the day we visited, but they also offer a keenly priced set menu - two courses for £12.95 or three for £15.95. With Christmas on its way Charles is keen to point out that you can book your office party at The Fountain, ‘We have a fantastic room available for Christmas parties that can accommodate up to 45 people. The menu shown opposite is available for prebooked Christmas parties from the 29th November until the 24th December. The only days we are not taking Christmas parties are Saturdays and Sundays, nor are we open on New Year’s Eve.’ Great reasonably priced food and a relaxed atmosphere are the secrets to The Fountain’s continued success. We’re sure you’ll agree!

Pheasant Forestiere with Wilted Wild Watercress Madaline Bonvini-Hamel is a self confessed food fanatic who, ‘was drawn into the whirlpool world of gastronomy’ at an early age. She writes the most sophisticated food blog on the web www.britishlarder.co.uk and has just opened her first restaurant - British Larder, Suffolk. Here’s one of her tasty autumnal dishes for us all to enjoy. To dine at the Bromeswell based restaurant call 01394 460310 1 pheasant about 500g 2 rashers of smoked streaky bacon 50g unsalted butter 150g small round onions or shallots, peeled 150g celery, diced 1 clove of garlic, crushed 150g mixed wild mushrooms and field mushrooms 100ml sherry or white wine 50ml brandy or cognac 250ml chicken stock 100ml double cream 1tsp freshly chopped thyme Salt and freshly cracked black pepper 50g wild watercress, washed Method Preheat the oven to 200°C. Prepare the pheasant by removing the legs and the breast meat from the bone. Discard the bone and wrap one slice of smoked streaky bacon around each pheasant breast. Peel the onions, do not cut the root part too deep as the onions will fall apart. Dust the mushrooms and slice them about 1/2 cm thick. Prepare the celery and garlic. Season the pheasant legs and heat a large oven proof casserole dish with half of the butter. Sauté the pheasant legs and breast until golden all over in the nutty brown butter, transfer to a plate. Return the casserole dish to the heat and melt the rest of the butter and once the butter starts to foam and turn brown sauté the onions, mushrooms, celery and garlic until golden add seasoning. As the onions start to turn darker brown, deglaze the pan with the brandy and cook until the brandy become sticky and coating, add the sherry or wine and cook until sticky and coating. Return the browned meat to the casserole dish and add the stock, turn the heat down to a gentle simmer, once boiling place the lid on top and place the casserole dish in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. While the casserole is in the oven, bring a small saucepan with salted water to the boil and blanch the wild watercress for two minutes in the rapid boiling water, refresh in icy cold water, drain and set aside. Once the casserole is ready remove from the oven and remove the lid and return the casserole to a low heat, add the cream and simmer to the correct consistency, add the fresh thyme and blanched watercress and adjust the seasoning if needed. It's optional to remove the meat from the casserole dish once it comes out of the oven, set the meat aside to rest whilst finishing the sauce by adding the cream bring it back to the boil, simmer until slightly thickened and add the thyme and blanched watercress and serve with the pheasant breast and leg meat. What’s in season... Quince Quince belongs to the same family as apples and pears; its shape is similar to a pear, but larger. It has lumpy yellow skin

works well spread onto a joint of lamb before roasting. To make 1.5 kg 1.5kg Quinces 750g Granulated sugar 1. Chop the quinces – there’s no need to peel or core them, but make sure the fur you sometimes find on their skin is washed off – and put them in a large saucepan with just enough water to cover. Heat gently, stirring from time to time to help the sugar dissolve, then bring to the boil and cook gently for 30 – 40 minutes or until the mixture is so thick that if you scrape a wooden spoon through it, the purée parts and leaves a clean line at the bottom of the pan. Weddings...

A do-it-yourself wedding... A do-it-yourself wedding is one sure fire way to personalise your big day and potentially save a bundle of money - Get stuck into making everything from invitations to table plans, and you could save yourself

hundreds of pounds. Rally the support of friends and family and you’ll have plenty of fun too! Here are some ideas to help you create your perfect wedding and make some big savings. 33

Make it special Invitations are a good starting point and a great example of where you can make some big savings. There are lots of ways to create gorgeous and unique invitations at a fraction of what it costs to buy them ready made.

You don’t even have to be creative. Modern materials like ready-made card blanks and embellishments mean it’s never been so easy to make cards. For design ideas just look around you - in card shops, magazines and books.

to save money and add some personal finishing touches to your big day. And its surprising how easy it is to cut some costs without losing the effect (because, let’s be honest, handcrafted is chic so long as it doesn’t look like something made on Blue Peter!). For example, buy a simple tiara or headband and embellish it yourself with delicate petite flowers, feathers, pre-wired diamantes and faux pearl picks. Its quick, it’s easy, it’s truly original and won’t cost a fortune. The same applies to hats and fascinators, which is great news for guests who don’t want to risk wearing the same as someone else. And there’s plenty more you can do to get a designer look on a budget, like decorating plain shoes with diamantes (they look particularly good on the heels), ribbons and

There are lots of different techniques you can use too, from traditional paper and card with embellishments to decoupage, rubber stamping and many more. Just bear in mind that if you are making lots then keep the technique and the design simple. If in doubt stick to the golden rule: less is more. If you’ve lots of cards to make my tip is to set up a mini production line and enlist friends and family to help. Above all, remember that there is no right or wrong way to make a card.

Here comes the bride! Creating gorgeous accessories for you and your guests is another way 34

buckles, to make footwear sparkle. Today, there’s a huge choice of faux flowers too, from exotic blooms to seasonal favourites, which are ideal for making bouquets, posies, button holes and corsages as well as pew ends and table centre pieces. They can look as good as the real thing and what’s more there’s no risk of them wilting by the end of the day.

Make your reception perfect Your reception is likely to be the biggest single expenditure of your wedding! Good news then that with a little imagination and effort, there’s plenty you can do to make your reception memorable while making some big savings too. Whether you want to decorate your own cake, make table plans and place names, create stunning table centrepieces, chair back decorations for the bride and groom, or favours for your guests, there’s a huge choice of creative materials and equipment available. For example, if you don’t want your cake to eat into your budget too much, buy a ready iced cake in different sizes and then tier with cake columns and decorate with a cake topper, ribbon and faux flowers! Artificial flowers are perfect for making table centrepieces too. Even low cost ones can look as good as the real thing and will obligingly bend into just

the right shape without breaking. Spray with a mist of water fragranced with oil for a beautiful scent.

And after the wedding Memories of your special day, back from your honeymoon and wistfully looking through photographs? While everything is still fresh, now is the time to make sure you make the

most of your memories for the future! The photo album aside, there’s plenty you can do to make more of your favourite photographs, like capturing the sequence of events in a Wedding Day Scrapbook.

And if you think scrapbooks have anything to do with torn scraps of paper crammed into an oversized drawing book, think again! Popular in America for the past decade, scrapbooking involves the preservation of photographs and mementoes, carefully designed on scrapbook pages, that build into albums for the enjoyment of generations to come. Turning photographs into stories and keepsakes is easy, especially when you have thousands of papers and embellishments. Just remember that it’s really important to use acid free papers, card and adhesives to minimise the risk of scrapbook pages becoming discoloured, cracked or damaged over time. As a beginner, it’s a good idea to use a kit or follow a design that can be found in one of the many magazines or books dedicated to scrapbooking. And if there’s anything too bulky for your scrapbook page, keep it safe in a Memory Box decorated to coordinate with your Scrapbook. 37

Did you know... Rhubarb is the latest fruit to be added to the growing list of superfoods. It has been discovered by researchers that rhubarb, like many other red fruits, contains cancer killing chemicals And better still, cooking the fruit, such as in crumble or pie, increases the concentration of these chemicals.

Big ZZZZZ Excellent news for anyone who likes a good lie in at the weekend but who has a hyperactive partner, raring to go at the crack of dawn. It has been scientifically proven that we need to lie in to repenish the brain and boost energy, alertness and attention span after a week of restricted sleep. The findings contradict the received wisdom that eight hours sleep provides the best start to the day- If you have been deprived of sleep during the week, you may need 10 or more hours to get back to peak performance. Now all the scientists need to do is find a way of persuading babies and children to sleep through until 10am on a Saturday.

Health and Spa... Luxury, privacy and peace… Ufford Park Health and Spa is without doubt one of the top local spas in the area so it was great to get the opportunity to visit just as the weather is turning grey. The Spa takes relaxation to a whole new level and the allure of it’s serene, calming atmosphere means that it’s hardly difficult to spend the better part of a day there. Indeed for flexibility and convenience the day spa packages are time oriented, as opposed to treatment led. They incorporate a combination of dedicated therapist treatment time coupled with the opportunity for you to experience the very latest in heat and water therapies in the unique Thermal Suite. Because you book a slot of time rather than a single treatment you’ll be under no pressure to leave as soon as your treatment is over so you’ll have time to relax. The spa is uni-sex and provides some treatments specifically for men. So my partner and I planned completely different experiences, whilst I couldn’t wait to try the new Jessica Nails GELeration manicure he was keen to experience the hot stone back treatment. We arrived armed with just our swimming costumes and were given toweling robes, a towel and foot salts. We were talked through the session and assisted to the spa, which is attached to the main Fitness and Leisure Centre (free to hotel guests). En route, we passed a newly40

equipped gymnasium, an indoor pool with a jacuzzi, and a steam room and sauna. After a brief walk through the pool area, we reached the spa that is very impressive with its contemporary décor - a fabulous environment. The Thermal Suite is centered around an immersive 17' by 10' bubbling hydro pool which is surrounded by a ring of exotic rooms offering dry and steam heat treatments which followed ancient bathing rituals. These include, the Aroma Steam Room - where a combination of aromatherapy essences, designed to help you relax. The Mineral Grotto – a hot steam room that features salt and essences which aid healing and relaxation. A Soft Sauna – a traditional pine room where you can relax in hot and balmy, yet comfortable air with calming essences. We were expecting the sauna rooms to be too hot to spend much time in, but instead found the heat to be very gentle and effective, enabling us to circulate between the three rooms relaxing and winding down in the process. The lighting and smell of each individual room along with the temperature changes gives you a real sensory experience and on leaving the spa we both felt calm - yet energized! Indeed we were so relaxed that we nearly forgot that lunch is part of the spa package and soon realized it was time to leave the thermal suite to retire

to a private sitting room – the sanctuary –where we enjoyed a delightful glass of Pinot Grigio and salad – although I must confess to a tuna-filled baked potato as well. Fortified, it was off to our treatments… On a course recently the speaker was waxing lyrical about her new gel nails so I was interested to try the Jessica Nails GELeration manicure. I’ve never had any artificial nail system, however, I was very pleased with the result. The varnish goes on as normal, but is dried under UV light making your nails look smooth, natural and giving perfect coverage. They last for weeks without breaking or chipping so you can go from gardening and athletics to a business meeting and an evening on the town knowing that your nails will be perfect. Then, once they have grown in 2/3 weeks an infill appointment will keep them looking great for another two weeks or you can simply soak them off – this is another benefit of this range is that the nails soak off causing no trauma to your natural nails, unlike other gel nail systems.

All though a bit of a body treatment virgin, he was very impressed with the combination of aromas and exfoliating massages that really worked a treat. The stones were worked across his back by skilled therapist Emma and then placed on key pressure points to relieve stress and trapped energy. It was quite an experience leaving him invigorated and destressed. All too soon it was time to head home, and we were impressed to find out that spa experiences start at an affordable £35 a person, including lunch but excluding treatments.

We felt completely pampered and left feeling a million dollars. The Ufford Park Health and Spa offers a really exclusive experience where the treatments are expertly delivered Actually if you want to make a saving and the staff, from and can book quickly, this month, you the moment you can buy a gel manicure for £30 arrive, really deliver a (normally £35) and receive the infill professional and treatment for free (normally £15)! Anglia Factors... TOP TIPS ON PLANNING A FABULOUS SOCIAL KITCHEN... The kitchen is now well established as the most important room in the home. Instead of being just the room in which to cook and wash up, the kitchen is the hub of the home, where the family congregates, where dinner parties take place and where the children do their homework. If you are planning on a new, ultra sociable kitchen, read the following tips from the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association (KBSA): Ideally you should put your kitchen units along two adjacent walls to create two different areas; one for the cooking, storage and washing up and a relaxing area for dining, socialising and entertaining. Do not try to cram too much into your available space as this will result in an ineffective kitchen which feels small. If

By all means include your home comforts in this space but do bear in mind that fabrics, floor and wall coverings should be easily cleaned or of a wipeable material. With the above tips you should now be ready to plan your dream kitchen!

you do not have room for a dining table, incorporate a breakfast bar instead as this takes up less space. If you have children then do consider using part of the island as a breakfast bar as it will allow the kids to sit and eat their snacks, do their homework or even watch and learn while you cook. Lighting is very important in a room

The best of British... Jayrest Interiors... Jayrest Interiors in Hadleigh takes pride in being one of the few remaining British furniture manufacturers still in existence. In this issue Lynda Keeble, the founder’s daughter and managing director, talks to us about her 40year-old family business. The furniture is manufactured right next door to the showroom and benefits from local staff and traditional values. Meeting with her in the company’s well upholstered offices, Lynda comments: 'The British furniture trade is going through a difficult time with many British businesses forced out by cheaper imported furniture. We are proud that we have found the niche in the market for people who want the quality and the service that we offer as well as keeping the local economy strong and local people in jobs. Basing our extensive showroom on site means there are no high street overheads, and our customers are often surprised by the reasonable prices for our wonderfully made furniture.' 'Being well known for quality and value is a huge advantage, but we do keep innovating and there have been many changes since the company was founded in the 1970’s, with new designs and

fabulous fabrics being created all the time. Inspired upholsters, machinists and sales staff at Jayrest take pride in every single job that they do, from start to finish.’ ‘We feel, it is the bespoke service and attention to detail that really sets Jayrest apart from some other furniture manufacturers and retailers’, as Lynda continues: 'I love what I do, yet understand that the whole thing can be daunting for customers and an expensive mistake if they get it wrong.' 'I try to make the experience in our showroom an enjoyable one where customers feel comfortable. I get great pleasure in seeing a customer who really doesn't know how to go about refurbishing a room, then giving them a little guidance to help them walk away with something that they are thrilled with.' Why not give then a call – there’s still time to get that new suite before Christmas! Schools... Educating Ipswich... Every new school year is a time full of anticipation and excitement, but it can be an anxious time too, especially for parents and children moving to secondary education, or starting primary school for the first time. As a parent, it's essential to do your homework to ensure that your choice of school is absolutely right for your children. If you've decided to take the independent school route, now is the time to start looking ahead to next autumn and making your shortlist from the line up of private schools available in the Ipswich area. Parents and children will want to find a school that balances a strong reputation for academic excellence with plenty of opportunities to explore a varied programme of extracurricular activities - a well rounded education is paramount to ensure your child works hard and plays hard too.

60

while also encouraged to become a confident, independent individual? Children with special skills and abilities thrive best in a school that specialises in developing musical, artistic and sporting talents alongside the normal curriculum. But our school years are not just about getting good grades and taking music lessons- children will be hoping to go to a school where they can make plenty of friends and develop a wide and welcoming social circle. Open Day checklist: Open days are an ideal opportunity to talk to the Head, teaching staff and pupils during your visit. Some points you might like to address include: What is the school's academic policy and the destination of leavers? Exam results? This is a useful measure if you can compare them with results in previous years

While some schools are highly selective, many cater for children of more average ability and some specialise in helping children in need of individual attention. Think carefully about your own child's academic needs and look at schools that are appropriate: even siblings may have different needs, so there's no 'one size fits all approach'. Some children thrive in a competitive environment in the company of other lively and confident pupils. Others may benefit from being part of a smaller community.

What internal systems does the school have for testing and assessment?

Pastoral care is also important, will your child be nurtured emotionally

What are the teachers qualifications and experience?

Is there a good range of extra curricular and social activities? Discipline and the school's policy on issues such as drugs and bullying? Pastoral care- what support network would be available for your child?

What is ionized water? Healthy drinking water... The additional health benefits of ionized water are worth raving about. Compared to normal water, ionized water is six times more hydrating, and is absorbed and used by the body more efficiently. Ionized water is known as nature’s antioxident. It helps oxygen production, increasing our energy and reducing symptoms of ageing. Increased oxygen in turn helps destroy cancer cells, remove waste and carry nutrients, meaning a healthier, energised body.

For a healthier body and healthier environment, a water ionizer is the way forward. Now set out the cups and see who can drink the most… Melody Countertop Water Ioniser £849 Amazon.co.uk

Here’s the science bit: a water ionizer uses lowvoltage electrolysis to separate the unwanted acid components from the beneficial alkaline components. The alkaline ionized water is what comes out the tap for us to drink, wash and cook with. It’s known as ‘live water’ because of the increased oxygen, and is said to be similar to the water the Hunzakuts drink directly from glacial streams in the Himalayas. Ionized water is not only great to drink. Used in cooking, it hydrates the food, promoting the goodness and flavour of what we eat. Ionized water is also beneficial for the skin and great for cleaning/sterilising.

Abbeygate Picturehouse and Cinema City recommends... MADE IN DAGENHAM (15) opens 1 October Director: Nigel Cole. Starring: Rosamund Pike, Miranda Richardson, Bob Hoskins, Sally Hawkins, Jaime Winstone, Rupert Graves, Richard Schiff. UK 2010. 113 mins. In 1968 a group of female workers went on strike at the Ford Dagenham car plant over unequal rates of pay. Their protest made national news and gave huge impetus to the campaign for equal rights for women in the ‘70s, which successfully brought about the Sexual Discrimination Act of 1975. Forty-two years later, Nigel Cole’s (CALENDAR GIRLS) heartfelt dramatisation starring Sally Hawkins (HAPPY-GO-LUCKY) is a poignant reflection on British social reform with a breezy modern tone that evokes the Ealing style of humour. Following in the footsteps of social-realist films with a feel-good twist, such as BILLY ELLIOT and THE FULL MONTY, this is poised to be the next must-see British comedy, with the stellar ensemble cast giving the film an extra bite. MY AFTERNOONS WITH MARGUERITTE (15) opens 12 November Director: Jean Becker. Starring: Gérard Depardieu, Gisèle Casadesus, François-Xavier Demaison, Maurane. France 2010. 82 mins. French with English subtitles. From the director who brought us CONVERSATIONS WITH MY GARDENER, this is the uplifting story of one of those chance encounters that can radically change the course of your life. Germain (Depardieu) is a large, unmarried and almost illiterate man in his fifties. Margueritte is a tiny elderly woman with a passion for the written word. The only thing the two have in common is a shared fondness for pigeons. When Germain happens to sit beside Margueritte on a park bench and she reads him extracts from her novels, an unlikely friendship develops. Under Margueritte’s tutelage, Germain discovers a love of literature and with it, a wisdom that confounds his friends at the bistro, who have always treated him like an idiot. As Margueritte begins to lose her eyesight, Germain sees an opportunity to use his love for this sweet and mischievous grandma to improve both his own life and hers. What we are reading... Pereira Maintains By Antonio Tabucchi

This was first published under the more assertive title Declares Pereira. The change is entirely appropriate to this graceful, gripping book. Pereira writes for a down -at -heel paper in Lisbon in1938. Portugal suffers under a dictatorship. Across the border the Spanish civil war rages. Pereira wants no trouble, just to be left alone with the memories of his deceased wife. All this changes with the arrival of an energetic young man who is not scared of the authorities in the least. Pereira’s awakening is beautifully conveyed and, whilst he spends much of the novel maintaining his opinions, by the end he has well and truly declared them.

Untitled 11:

The Beautiful Renaissance Street art came of age with Banksy and this book explores its new found maturity. Witty, sometimes shocking and often quite lovely this is about as far from tagging railway bridges as you could get. There are some great decrepit super-heros stencilled onto the sides of derelict buildings in rural Norway and of the artist who puts knitwear on statues.

Started Early, Took my dog by Kate Atkinson

This is the fourth novel featuring the endearing world- weary, semi retired, private eye Jackson Brodie, alongside a cast of characters both flawed and all too human. The twists and turns of the gripping plot are intricately and perfectly mapped, while the suspense and sense of danger are guaranteed to keep readers turning the pages. It is a literary novel, multi - layed and full of humour, written with a lightness of touch rarely found in crime writing.

That's Not My Monkey by Rachel Wells

This is a new title in the groundbreaking "That's not my..." series. This award winning series is shortlisted for the British Book Industry Stora Enso Award for Design and Production. It combines bright, colourful illustrations with a variety of different textures to touch and feel on each page. It helps very young children develop important language and sensory skills. This Series is awarded 'Best Buy' by the readers of "Prima Baby" magazine.
