Festivals in Suffolk Escapism and inspiration are the founding features of any festival. Those held in Suffolk, with their eclectic mix of artistic flavours and backdrop of picturesque towns and beautiful countryside, deliver these elements in abundance. In the last ten years or so, festivals have been springing up all over the place in Suffolk. Whether you’re looking for art, music, food or beer festivals on a small or large scale the events in our region are well worth a visit. Perhaps the most famous of them, Latitude in Southwold, celebrates its 6th birthday this year. Last year saw around 35,000 people come together to see what the organiser call the best in music, literature, comedy, poetry, film, theatre, cabaret, art, dance, opera and fashion and this year looks set to be just as successful.
Now in its third year, Harvest at Jimmy’s is also going from strength to strength. Held at Jimmy Docherty’s farm, which was made famous by the TV programme ‘Jimmy’s Farm’, this festival embraces a passion for food and music and combines them both in one wonderful event. With a capacity of around 15,000 and held over two days in September each year, the festival has a family friendly atmosphere and a dedicated programme of events for kids as well as adults. Among those making appearances at the last two event’s were KT Tunstall, Newton Faulkner, the Hairy Bikers and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen staff. 3

This year’s line-up so far includes Eliza Doolittle, Huw Stephens, Mary Berry and Richard Corrigan. On a smaller scale, many of the towns and villages in Suffolk offer their own unique arts related festivals. Aldeburgh, for example, has two literary festivals of note: Aldeburgh poetry festival, which is now in its 23rd year, will take place in November and features over twenty poets from around the world. Aldeburgh Literary Festival, taking place in March each year, also focuses on literature and loo ks at a variety of topics including travel, biography, history, and humour, offering sessions for all those interested. Framlingham is another of Suffolk’s towns also offering an arts festival This event features a range of sessions including a number of practical workshops and performances; this year, visitors can learn about rag rug making techniques and listen to the Suffolk Cello Ensemble. Pulse Fringe Festival, 26th May to 11th June is a fantastic event for Ipswich, it’s very reasonably priced and accessible to all – a richer programme than I remember at any Fringe venue The Guardian Ipart, the arts festival in Ipswich, has also proved very popular over the years. Offering a diverse array of events such as stand-up comedy, live music, visual arts and film held in a variety of local venues, the festival caters for all interests during its three weeks.

Moving away from the arts, Suffolk is also famous for its food and beer festivals. In fact, there are so many it would be impossible to list them all here! Some of note include The Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival, the Festival of Beer and Brewing at the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket, Ipswich Beer Festival, Hundon Plough’s beer festival, Yaxley Cherry Tree’s festivals and also the Sausage and Beer festival at Jimmy’s Farm. South and Heart of Suffolk Walking Festival in May/June, which features around 30 walks in a variety of locations, is popular among those who love Suffolk’s delightful scenery. Walking with a difference, the festival also features outings with a poet and photographic and twilight walks. Xtreme fest in Felixstowe may be worth a visit if you like physical activities such as kayaking, skateboarding, biking, archery and martial arts. Also showcasing local live bands, the main aim of the festival is to promote sport and healthy living to all. Those mentioned above form only a very small percentage of the festivals going on in Suffolk. If you’re interested in these sort of events why not also check out the High Tide Festival, Bury St Edmunds’ Festival, LeeStock Music Festival, Woolpit Festival, Helmingham Hall Food and Drink Festival or Freesingfield Music Festival.

Pulse Festival 2011 The New Wolsey Theatre’s PULSE Fringe Festival 2011 presents an eclectic mix of theatre in Ipswich over a two week period (26 May to 11 June) with over 50 shows to tease your taste buds and generate debate about everything from the meaning of life to the merits of home hairdressing. PULSE was established in 2001 to provide a platform for new and emerging talent. For PULSE ’11, Festival Director Emma Bettridge has brought together the most exciting new work from across the country – new work from established companies like nabavok, Inspector Sands, Hoipolloi, Bryony Kimmings and Tim Clare and work from new artists like John Orbourne who presents John Peel’s Shed. Emma brings vast experience to her role as Festival Director. She was Head of Programming at Pleasance Theatre, London and Edinburgh and Producer of Pick of the Pleasance at Latitude Festival for three years.

Latitude Festival 2011 14th-17th July 2011 – Henham Park Estate, Southwold In the sumptuous surrounds of the Suffolk countryside, the gates will open for the sixth edition of the Latitude Festival. Since its inception in 2006, Latitude has changed the face of festivals, with a passion only matched by its ambition. Encompassing all aspects of the art and music worlds Latitude is the only place that brings together the best in music, literature, comedy, poetry, film, theatre, cabaret, art, dance, opera and fashion for one spectacular weekend. Bigger and better for 2011 Latitude has an increased arena size but with no capacity increase, allowing festival goers to roam the site freely while keeping its intimate and cosy feel; and there is also a second bridge across the lake from which crowds can enjoy spectacular light and visual displays and ad hoc performances. With an unrivalled programme of music and arts scheduled all weekend long, Latitude will continue to inspire and innovate, enlighten and engage with another incredible event promised for 2011.
Tania Harrison – Programmer of the Arts Arenas says: “Each year it’s a challenge to bring new and interesting performances to Latitude but I’m especially excited about this year’s line up. There will be some brilliant and innovative theatre performances all across the site and arenas and some may be quite unexpected and different from what we have ever done at Latitude before. The Faraway Forest has developed this year and will host the Outdoor Theatre and also The Winter’s Ball which will be transformed into a Narniaesque spectacle on Saturday night. A Hairy Dilemma As a woman, just occasionally you are compelled to share a story that might just help other women in a prickly predicament! Practically everyone I know has a story about going to bed looking perfectly normal and waking up with a ‘tache or, creepily, with one long stray hair in a particularly unlovely place like the chin. For God’s sake, don’t shave it. I know this sounds obvious, but I also have two girlfriends who did just this and what started as a drastic emergency measure before going out one night has now turned into a hated daily ritual, performed through a haze of tears. In my case, after years of waxing and tweezing – that resulted in red welts on my upper lip for a week, I defaulted to a weekly application of Cream Bleach, but this only really works if you are not too hirsute, otherwise I just ended up getting a big Dutch-looking blond porn star ‘tache rather than a dark, and arguably more stylish, Frida Kahlo one! My new business In the first of a new series on local entrepreneurs we talk to Dominique Godfrey, who runs Sugarplum Cupcakes Baking is pretty cool these days, what got you started? I started baking after moving to Suffolk with my husband and three small children. With frequent birthdays and school fetes to bake for I was continually practicing. After a while I found myself baking almost daily, trying out new recipes and perfecting my piping skills. When I decided to start my business up I enrolled on several courses locally and in London to improve my skills and quickly developed even more of a passion for it. Starting my Facebook page was definitely a turning point for the business. Suddenly people I didn't know were seeing my cakes and making enquiries to buy them. Without the power of Facebook, marketing my business would have been very difficult with limited funds as a small business. Today my Facebook page has over 900 likes and is still the biggest driver of business for me.

How long has your business been going and did you find it hard setting up? The business has been up and running for a year now and I have loved every minute of it, with 10 years PR and marketing experience behind me I had good grounding in the business side of things when I began, which definitely helped The business has grown and we now offer cupcake workshops, hen parties and children's parties, all of which I enjoy hugely. Tell me more about your workshops? Workshops are held regularly at The Cook's Shed, a fantastic venue in Melton, Woodbridge and take place over three hours on a Saturday morning. Each student learns a range of professional techniques including piping and making decorations from sugarpaste and leaves with 12 of their own decorated cupcakes to take home. The workshops are aimed at beginners and are a fun and relaxing way to spend a Saturday morning and develop a new skill. What’s been your best experience to date? Hosting my first workshop was definitely a highlight for me, being able to pass my skills on to other people and see the enjoyment they are getting from taking part is priceless. I'm passionate about teaching and am looking forward to offering an advanced cupcake workshop later in 2011. Where will you be in five years? Up to my eyes in icing sugar, as I am most days, there is a dream lingering in the back of my head to have my own bakery in Woodbridge one day, who knows? For now, I'm more than happy juggling a family and a job that I love!

What’s in season? Jersey Royal New Potatoes
Asparagus Feast on the season’s first asparagus. The season is tantalizingly brief but the quality is frequently exceptional in Suffolk. Asparagus ideally should be eaten just hours after picking (try your nearest farmers’ market). Traditionally matched with hollandaise sauce, it requires minimal messing with. Boil it briefly until tender and eat with melted butter. Look for firm but tender stalks with good colour and closed tips. Smaller, thinner stalks are not necessarily more tender; in fact thicker specimens are often better due to the smaller ratio of skin to volume.
The fabulous flavour of Jersey Royal new potatoes arises from the unique growing conditions on the island. A true seasonal gem, around 99% of the crop is exported to the UK and the rest are enjoyed by the Jersey inhabitants. The season is shortlived so gorge on them while you can. The early season potatoes are smaller and more tender, the later season ones larger and more flavourful; both are fabulous. Look for unwashed potatoes; they travel better wearing a jacket of earth.
Sorrel
Herbs Finally May is a fantastic month for herbs. Everything from chives, basil, dill, parsley and mint to less widely-used varieties such as lovage, summer savoury and chervil are in season and great to use in the kitchen.
Its name derives from the French for sour in reference to the plant’s characteristic acidity. Common sorrel has been cultivated for centuries, and its leaves may be puréed in soups and sauces or added to salads. Sorrel leaves are generally large, brightgreen and arrow-shaped with a smooth, crisp texture. Buckler leaf sorrel has tiny, shield-shaped leaves that are good in a mixed green salad or as a garnish. All sorrel is incredibly sour with a lemony flavour and it shouldn’t be eaten in large quantities as it contains a high amount of oxalic acid. 31

Dine at the Manor Restaurant and drink in the history! Ipswich is steeped in history and was a very prosperous place in years gone by. One venue that isn’t immediately apparent as a medieval location is the Belstead Brook Hotel. Originally a Saxon hall stood here and the two principle rooms of the then structure, each with a large fireplace in the end of the wall, stood on either side of the original front door.
The kitchen of the Manor Restaurant is run under the watchful eye of female chef Gina Knox who has been at the helm for eight years and recognized locally as a passionate chef that is happiest using local fresh ingredients. As well as their exciting daily set menu, the latest seasonal À la carte menu showcases a range of exciting Spring dishes. The daily menu is from £16.95 for 2 courses & £21.00 for 3 Courses. Tasty starters range from Homemade Pork, Chorizo, Sun Blushed Tomato and Tarragon Terrine, with Chef’s Chutney – £7.50 to Pan Seared Scallops with Caesar salad and Parmesan croutons – £8.95.
In Jacobean times a wing was added and oak paneling installed. Also from this period is the herringbone brickwork, which can still be seen on the stairs leading up from the centre of the hotel’s restaurant. Before and after the Great War, two further wings were built which now house the old hotel front hall and the library that is to the rear of the main restaurant and still used to great effect as a delightful room that is used daily for lunch and dinner.
Delicious mains feature both Venison and Sirloin steaks as well as dishes such as Cod loin wrapped in Parma ham on spinach champ and finished with a white wine butter sauce – £14.95 and Pearl barley, butternut squash, thyme and Parmesan Risotto – £13.95. Finally a great selection of desserts that include, Hazelnut and Honey Parfait – £5.75 to a scrummy Cherry and Almond Tart with Mascarpone Cream – £5.50.

Living in Suffolk doesn't just involve seeing beautiful countryside, walking alluring coastal paths or discovering the rich history of the buildings... it's also about sampling the wonderful locally produced food. Suffolk's agricultural heritage is a long and proud one. We're recognised as having one of the most productive, dynamic and progressive farming sectors anywhere in the world and boast a large number of established food and drink manufacturers as well as countless restaurants using locally sourced products. Supplying a roll-call of internationallyrenowned large-scale manufacturers, including the likes of Muntons, Greene King, Birds Eye, Adnams, Premier Foods and Aspalls, Suffolk ingredients are found everywhere – from Maltesers and Branston Pickle, to a pint of Old Speckled Hen. Many of these are now common household names and have certainly made their mark in Suffolk. From Aspalls Cider, established in Suffolk since 1728 and Palmers Bakery, providing the local community with warm bread since 1752, to the likes of the relatively new Paddy and Scotts, coffee roasters based in Earl Soham, and Nethergate Brewery in Clare, famous for its coriander beer, Suffolk has proved a haven for those who are passionate about fresh, local produce. Agriculture plays a strong role in Suffolk and, interestingly, this county was the birthplace of Lady Eve Balfour – the founder of the Soil Association. It's no wonder then that as well as arable farming, poultry and pig production are important areas of activity. In fact, an impressive 20% of the UK's organic, outdoor-reared pork comes from our county and we have the highest population density of pigs as compared to any other county.
Among others, the free-range pork from Jimmy Butler's herd of 18,000 pigs in Blythburgh has proved a popular choice among shoppers. His policy of using no antibiotics or growth promoters coupled with a strong commitment to sustainable farming has earned him the prestigious ‘Pig Farmer of the Year Award’ from Farmer's Weekly. Another farming name emerging from the depths of Suffolk is Jimmy Docherty: owner of Jimmy's Farm. Made popular from the TV show, the 93 acre farm was derelict for fifteen years before Jimmy took over in 2003. Now a full working farm, the area is home to rare Essex pig breeds as well as a 30 acre woodland, nature trail, Farm Shop, Adventure Play Area and Field Kitchen and accepts visitors seven days a week. It's apparent that fresh, locally sourced food is an integral part of Suffolk life. While large-scale production remains Suffolk's focus, our smaller producers have successfully responded to the demand for high-quality, niche food and drink products that are locally made and can be traced to their source. The result is a diverse range of products - everything from free range pork and hand-made cheeses, to rapeseed oil, outdoor organic chickens, cider, beer and oysters. 35

With such a mouth-watering menu of freshly caught fish, homegrown meat, delectable vegetables, herbs and mouth-watering fruit, means nothing less than a number of award-winning farm shops, farmers’ markets, restaurants, pubs and eateries spread across the county for all to delight in. Farmer's Markets, local shops and Food Festivals also give visitors a chance to sample some locally produced food: Food shops such as Focus Organic in Halesworth, Southwold and Ufford Produce and Provision Co in Lower Ufford are just two of the fantastic shops stocking a diverse range of fresh produce. Eye Country market is well worth a look – this was shortlisted on the BBC Good Food Programme ‘Best Food Market’, and other farmers markets include those held at Snape Maltings, Southwold Pier, Stowmarket Market Place and Easton Farm Park. The Suffolk Food Hall is also one for the list. Providing a showcase for quality local food, this is a popular place for visitors. Showing over 70 exhibitors with organic vegetables, fresh and smoked fish, rare breed meat and game, cheeses, frozen yoghurt, jams, beer, wine and lager, the festival is a fantastic introduction to what’s on offer in Suffolk. I’m not motivated by the status, prestige and power that come with the job, for me it's a passion. I focus on the work itself, I’m less interested in financial gain preferring instead to find a sense of fulfilment from the work itself.”

Spring Gardens How to make a garden that works for you – whatever the size Buds are blooming, the evenings are getting longer: spring is definitely here. If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, then your green fingers should be itching to get stuck into some sowing, planting and pruning.
Back to basics Small gardens and patios need careful planning and design, so plan your outdoors area around how it will be used. The first consideration is what sort of ground cover to go for: grass can be tricky in a small area, so if space is really tight or you want an easy-care garden, consider alternatives. Good-quality hardwood decking works really well in small spaces. Opt for a good hardwood like a light oak, balau or garrapa. Define the space and borders with colour by using different woods, and play with the direction of the decking (horizontal will make a space seem wider, vertical longer: alternate the direction for greatest impact). Block paving and stone are also good choices. Shade and pattern can be employed to add interest to the area. Gravel is available in a variety of colours, and the noise it makes underfoot can be an excellent burglar deterrent. Affordable wood
New floors
Wooden flooring doesn’t have to be pricey. Many older properties have floorboards (sometimes hidden beneath plywood) that can be reclaimed and restored, and this can be an inexpensive way of getting a real wood finish. Old floorboards – provided they are in reasonable condition (and you don’t mind picking out all the old nails!) – can be sanded, stained and varnished and look amazing If some of the boards are beyond restoration, you might be able to replace them with reclaimed boards (call around local timber suppliers), or new ones stained to match (if you can get the right size). This is a good budget idea if you are up to the hard graft of sanding and finishing.
If you’re sourcing and fitting a new wooden floor from scratch, flooring falls into two main categories. Engineered or woodlaminate flooring is a popular choice, as it is easy to fit and requires little upkeep. This type of floor consists of a plywood base with a coated veneer of real wood on top – prices tend to vary along with the thickness of the veneer, but this is usually a cheaper option than solid wood. Boards can be laid on top of existing wood or concrete floors. The second choice is a solid hardwood floor – solid timber planks that can be laid straight onto joists or on top of existing wooden floors. These can be purchased pre-finished (sanded and treated), or (generally less expensive) unfinished and ready for you to add the finishing touches.
If you’re on a tight budget and can’t face the sanding, painting floorboards white or off-white is a short-term option. However, even the toughest paint will show wearand-tear quite quickly and floors look tatty when chipped and worn. Paint is also a nightmare to remove if you change your mind later – avoid if you can.

Jonny’s Sister Jane Field runs the successful furnishings company Jonny’s Sister. Here we ask her some burning questions… What’s been your biggest challenge since starting Jonny’s Sister? Employing people to take over the work that I was doing at the start. I am afraid that I still don’t believe anyone can lick a stamp like I can! I am not very good at letting go! Having your own business is a bit like having another child... you get very protective over it! However, I have learnt that in order for it to grow you do have to let go.
Do you have a favourite design in the Jonny’s Sister collection? I suppose I just love our Love Letters and the way that they are equally suitable for a christening present as they are a wedding present or even a 65th birthday present!
What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business in the world of textiles? Go for it! It is such fun to work with lovely things. I could never imagine working with something that did not make me happy. The other bit of advice is to never be afraid to ask people for advice. Why reinvent the wheel when you know someone that has already done it! The worse that could happen is that they say no. However, you must also be ready to help others in the same way. I have found incredible camaradie between all of us SME’s and I never hesitate to pick up the phone to ask someone where the best place to get something is. Make your own bunting A step by step guide to creating the essential party accessory for summer There’s something very cheery about bunting, so with the joys of summer upon us we will show you how to make your own. It makes a great personal decoration for a child's party or special occasion. Bunting is surprisingly straightforward to make. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours to make two metres. It’s also a good way to use up scraps of fabric you may have lying around and you can even cut up old cotton shirts that may have seen better days too. For maximum impact, try using a range of mix and match fabrics. Use bold colours and prints for a bright effect, or pastel shades for a prettier country garden look. What you need for two metres of bunting: fabric scraps, scissors, 2.5 metres of ribbon/cotton tape/bias binding, thread pins sewing machine (or a needle), iron tape measure/ruler.

1. Begin by cutting 16 triangles from your fabric, each measuring 20cm across the top and 25cm down the middle 2. Pin two triangles together at a time with right sides facing, and sew down the two long sides. Make sure you leave the top open. Repeat this with all your triangles 3. Turn all triangles the right way out pushing a pencil down to make a V at the bottom. Iron them flat 4. Take your cotton tape or ribbon and iron it in half length ways 5. Lay the short edge of your neatened triangles inside the crease of the tape/ ribbon one next to the other and pin in place. Leave a 3cm gap between the triangles, if you wish. Sew along the length of your ribbon, catching the triangles as you go.

The collection of costumes in this vibrant exhibition are inspired by British wild birds and mammals and also represents the evolution of period dress. From a medieval deer to a contemporary hedgehog, each costume has been carefully designed and constructed by observing the movement, character, habitat and style of each creature. Large scale location photography taken by the artist in each creature's natural environment, as well as fabric samples, are presented alongside Kate's sketchbooks which reveal each costume's design and construction in step by step photographs. If you only see one Japanese arthouse movie this month... Norwegian Wood (15) Dir: Tran Anh Hung, Jap, 2010, 134 mins, Japanese dialogue with subtitles Ken’ichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi, Kiko Mizuhara A Japanese film by a French-Vietnamese writerdirector based on a 1987 international best-seller named after a 1965 Beatles’ song about Scandinavian pine. When his best friend commits suicide a Japanese student begins a relationship with his friend’s ex-girlfriend. A beautifully shot and mesmerising film Writer-director Tran Anh Hung may not speak Japanese, but in other respects he’s ideally suited to the task – a master of mood and sensitivity, an aesthete attuned to introspection and melancholy. Tran (a Vietnamese who was brought up and educated in France) made The Scent of Green Papaya, Cyclo and At the Height of Summer. Like all Tran’s work, it’s a very sensual, evocative movie, with a lovely score by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, and it’s ravishingly photographed by the Taiwanese Mark Lee Ping-bin (In the Mood for Love; Three Times), one of the finest cinematographers anywhere in the world.
