hree hours of spectacular family entertainment is in store for the viewers of the 80th McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade, which kicks off with a performance of “Built to Amaze!” from Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. This year’s parade will take place LIVE on State Street in downtown Chicago from 8 to 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, and is broadcast live on WGN 9 Chicago and WGN America. CLTV will rebroadcast the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade from 2 to 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 28. Drew Sidora will cruise down State Street as the parade’s Grand Marshal. She will be joined by Ronald McDonald and his Big Red Shoe, soaring giant helium balloons, top marching bands, trotting horses, and energetic dance troops. For the first hour of the parade, viewers are welcome to watch performances from the nationally-recognized Million Dollar Quartet, to The Joffrey Ballet, and Coast2Coast Dancers, along with a number of musical groups from all over the city. Following the acts, the two hour march-a-

thon begins — huge floats, talented multicultural groups and majestic horses are only the beginning of the fun. Featured groups include The Barefoot Hawaiian, the Jesse White Tumbling Team, Tsukasa Taiko and many more. The parade is a family tradition for the local Chicago audience and the national viewers tuning in to watch the excitement. The parade lineup offers an exciting mix of entertainment for all ages, as well as provides a sense of pride for anyone performing, volunteering or viewing.

eware Chicago, the Cold Monster, the symbol of a full-blown monster of a cold, will be on the loose at this year’s McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade. Luckily, Zicam Cold Remedy — the PreCold medicine that helps shorten colds — will be close by. Look for the Zicam orange tent, where you can pick up a cozy orange hat, coupons, and other goodies from the brand. When you stop by, you can also take your picture with the 7-foot-tall Cold Monster himself — brace yourself in your best fighting stance, but don’t get too close. Since the official start of cold season Nov. 1, the Cold Monster has already been on the loose in Chicago, spreading symptoms like a sore, scratchy throat and runny nose to all those who come in contace with him. Even the mere mention of great-tasting Zicam will have the Cold Monster trembling — he doesn’t want his visit with you to be cut short, and Zicam Cold Remedy is his biggest fear. Parade attendees with a Pre-Cold, those folks who are experiencing their first sniffle, sneeze or throat tickle, should take Zicam Cold Remedy right away. It’s a completely different kind of medicine made with zinc that helps shorten a cold rather than just treat its symptoms. Taken as directed at the

Pre-Cold stage, Zicam RapidMelts, Oral Mist, and Chewables are clinically proven to shorten the duration of a cold. With Zicam watching over the parade, Chicago will be better prepared to take on this cold season. You never know when PreCold symptoms will appear, so it’s important to be prepared and have Zicam handy at home, at work and while standing shoulder to shoulder with friends (and strangers, including the Cold Monster) at the parade. Zicam, America’s No. 1 cold remedy brand, is proud to join Chicagoans for the parade this year. “We’re excited to be a part of this longstanding holiday tradition,” says Zicam Vice President of Marketing Lori Norian. “And we’re looking forward to educating Chicagoans about how to shorten their colds this season with Zicam. Together, we can fight back against the Cold Monster!” Don’t forget to share your parade photos on Facebook (www.Facebook.com/Zicam) or on Twitter (@Zicam)! Zicam Cold Remedy products are sold at your local Walgreens and other food, mass, and drug stores. With a wide range of products and great flavor variety, you’ll be sure to find a personal favorite.

Annual parade is one more way owners/operators serve the community

T

hanksgiving Day is a time for reflection and gratitude, and each year McDonald’s Thanksgiving Parade provides a wonderful opportunity for families, friends and the community to gather and celebrate the start of the holiday season. The McDonald’s Owner/Operators of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana are proud to support this Chicago tradition. While the holidays call to mind a season of giving, McDonald’s Owner/Operators are serving their local neighborhoods and people every day of the year. In fact, many franchisees have roots in the neighborhoods where they now have restaurants. John De Carrier began as a crew member in 1983, unaware that he would spend the next 30 years building a career at McDonald’s. Over the years, he worked at both restaurant and corporate levels before becoming an Owner/Operator in 2002. Today he and his wife, Carmen — whom he met when they both worked in corporate roles at McDonald’s — have 10 restaurants. Helping others discover their potential is a job De Carrier is passionate about. “I’m fortunate to spend a lot of time in my restaurants, talking with customers, crew members and local residents,” he says. “People are surprised to learn about the many opportunities within McDonald’s,” he adds. “I encourage everyone, especially my crew, to see the bigger picture. McDonald’s and the Owner/Operators employ thousands of people who serve in countless roles throughout the company, including marketing, finance, real estate, construction, education, health and nutrition, and operations. McDonald’s is an employer of limitless opportunity and learning for those who work hard, are passionate and ambitious.” Nancy Sandoval agrees. She has been with McDonald’s for 10 years. She began as a crew member at 15, was promoted to shift manager by 17, and worked while earning an accounting degree at the University of Illinois. “After graduation, I left McDonald’s for a position at a corporate accounting firm,” she says. “I quickly realized how much I missed interacting with customers and the social nature of a neighborhood restaurant. After a year at the firm, I decided to return to McDonald’s, where my career began.” Today Sandoval is a general manager at a McDonald’s in Highwood where she oversees restaurant operations and a team of 40 people. “I’m enjoying this time in my career,” she says. “But it’s also great to know that if I

ever want to return to accounting, there are opportunities within the McDonald’s organization that I can explore.” De Carrier is proud of the people he employs, as well as the training programs available to help his team advance personally and professionally. “When you put people first, everyone benefits,” he says. “People move forward and communities move forward.” De Carrier also believes in the responsibility of business, government and community to work together to achieve progress. “There are so many community groups and organizations that depend on the support of local businesses to carry out their missions,” he says. “The people they serve are the same people we serve. We are committed to giving back.” De Carrier is on the board of directors for both the Easter Seals and Erie Neighborhood House of Chicago, while his wife, Carmen, is on the board of directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana. There are more than 100 local McDonald’s Owner/Operators, who donate their time and resources to schools, churches and charitable causes. Dave Furman began his career 39 years ago as a part-time McDonald’s crew member in Highland, Ind. He planned to work there three or four years while earning his undergraduate degree. By graduation, he was already the restaurant general manager and enjoying it so much he decided to forgo dental school. “When I first started, it was a temporary way to earn some cash while I was in school,” he says. “What I gained in business experience turned out to be worth so much more.” Furman is now president of Restaurant Management Corp., which consists of 25 McDonald’s restaurants in Chicago and Northwest Indiana. He credits much of his success to his mentor, McDonald’s Owner/Operator Rod Lubeznik. “I learned a great deal about social responsibility and community involvement from Rod and his family,” he says. “They’ve always been involved in education, the arts and urban renewal projects. “I quickly saw that McDonald’s was more than just a restaurant in town; it could be a positive force to drive meaningful community initiatives,” he adds. Furman serves on the board of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. With support from McDonald’s Operators, the Food Bank launched Pantry on the Go, a mobile food pantry that feeds thousands of people in different neighborhoods each week. Pantry on the Go is a

unique way to bring fresh vegetables, breads and canned goods to underserved families. “What makes me truly proud of this initiative are the hundreds of McDonald’s

crew, managers and supervisors who volunteer their time to help their fellow neighbors every week,” Furman says. “They truly embody the core values of McDonald’s, which is to always serve others.”

mal this year to volunteer at the parade for the second time. Arthur says that he travels close to two hours to be a part of the event. “As a child, I watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade from New York City on TV and was fascinated by the balloon characters such as Underdog, Snoopy, Mighty Mouse, Rocky and Bullwinkle, and others,” says Arthur. “When I volunteered in the Chicago parade the first time, I just figured that being part of a parade would be fun, especially working with the balloons. Volunteering that first time turned out to be very fulfilling and I enjoyed it very much.” Through its people and brands, CNH Industrial delivers power, technology and innovation to farmers, builders and drivers all around the world. t’s America’s most honored holiday; a centuries old tradition bringing families together. This Thanksgiving, millions of Americans will break bread and enjoy quality time anticipated throughout the year. And in Chicago, America’s quintessential traditional holiday brings another American family tradition to town — The Greatest Show On Earth! As the most popular circus in the world, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus has been entertaining families around the world for 143 years. The newest edition, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Presents Built To Amaze!, is an extraordinarily engineered circus experience where Children Of All Ages ďŹ nd out what it takes to build The Greatest Show On Earth. You can still see it live at one of the eight shows left to play at Chicago’s United Center. Built To Amaze! opens with the All-Access Pre-show where everyone is invited to join the fun and meet the international cast of performers as they prepare for the show. Ringmaster Andre McClain takes the Ringling Bros. reins, and accompanied by his horse Comanche, leads his Built To Amaze! funny and mischievous super circus supervisors to construct The Greatest Show On Earth. A fantastic design with more than

110 of the world’s best performers representing 17 countries along with nearly 100 exotic and domestic animals will be assembled, creating never-before-seen heart pounding performances. Ringling Bros. is thrilled to introduce nine-time international award winning comedic animal presenting duo Alex and Irina Emelin of Russia. Builders in their own right, Alex and Irina have spent years constructing unique acts full of comedy, animals, magic and dynamic athleticism. Also new to Ringling Bros. is the Tower Tumblers, a troupe of competitive aerial athletes from the Ukraine who launch themselves from trampolines to scale, repel and pass through a three-story high translucent tower. Ringling Bros. brings a spirited and ďŹ ery competition of basketball with the next generation of whirling unicyclists, the legendary King Charles Troupe, ďŹ rst featured in 1969 by Ringling Bros. producer Irvin Feld. Now, a new generation of producers, granddaughters Nicole and Alana Feld, and performers have come together to present a continuous display of one-wheeled excitement as the 12-member troupe dribbles, passes, shoots and weaves its way with outrageous skill and high-speed comedic antics in the wackiest game of b-ball ever played. Built to Amaze! provides hours of thrilling entertainment that is fun for the whole family for about the price of a movie ticket. hicago's Grand Holiday Tradition got its start in 1934 as a way to boost the economy and lift public spirits for a city that was suffering through the Great Depression. What began as a way to heighten morale and boost the economy, has transformed into this grand holiday tradition that millions tune in to and enjoy every year.

1934: Walter Gregory, president of the State Street Council, creates the State Street Christmas Caravan — held on Dec. 7 — in order to stimulate economic development for the street and cheer Chicagoans up during the Depression era.

1968: The Mayor's Office of Special Events takes over the responsibility of producing the holiday parade when the State Street Council determines that it can no longer fund the parade.

1984: The Ronald McDonald Children's Charities Parade is formed

2002: The League of Chicago Theatres partnership showcases several local and national touring theater companies.

and the parade route is moved from State Street to Michigan Avenue. 1990: The Brach's Kids Holiday Parade is created when Brach's Confections, Inc. assumes the position of title sponsor. 1998: Marshall Field's takes over as title sponsor of the parade and the Field's Jingle Elf Parade is created. Also, the parade begins building and debuting giant character bal-

loons, in association with KB Toys. Beginning with Kermit and Billy Blazes, the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade has introduced more recognizable character balloons since 1998 than any other parade in the country. 1999: Target joins Marshall Field's as the title sponsor of the event. The parade moves from Michigan Avenue to its original route on State Street and takes place on Thanksgiving Day for the first time.

2003: The parade is renamed the State Street Thanksgiving Parade. The parade presents its first-ever unit from Hawaii - E la Ka Hololio Me Ke Kahiau, a traditional Hawaiian equestrian unit from Kailua, Hawaii. 2006: McDonald's Owners of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana and the McDonald's Corporation announce a two-year title sponsorship of the parade. 2007: WGN-TV and Chicago Festival Association announce that the station will broadcast the McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade live and

Fourteen years ago brothers Nick and Vince DiNovo along with their father Anthony didn’t set out to build “the Southside’s largest entertainment complex.” Their idea was much simpler. “We wanted to build a family owned business where we could work with our friends and provide the community a place where they could come with their friends and family, enjoy dinner,

watch some sports, relax outside and see some entertainment,” says owner Nick DiNovo. Whether you’re visiting 115 Bourbon Street for its extensive menu of American fare with a touch of New Orleans Cajun flair, its beer garden, to watch the Sox, Bulls, Bears, Blackhawk’s and, yes, even the Cubs, or you came to see your favorite band, to dance in the nightclub or attend a benefit, have a business meeting or a holiday party, this is the one stop to do it all. Remember, it’s the place for everyone and don’t forget: “It’s all about the beads!” Visit www.115BourbonStreet.com.

OneMain Financial teams join forces to show appreciation for soldiers

A

OneMain Financial branch manager in Corbin, Ky., wanted to show soldiers from her local community that they weren’t forgotten. So she contacted other branches in the area to set up collection points for donations. Word spread, and before long, more than 50 branch teams in Kentucky and Tennessee were working together toward a common purpose — to show appreciation to our troops abroad. Sometimes you just need to tell someone your goals and the help you need follows. After many weeks of coordination and hard work, the OneMain Financial teams packed 114 “boxes of appreciation.â€? Each one was personalized for a dierent soldier and included speciďŹ c items from his or her wish list, collected earlier. Whether it was fruit snacks or an electric blanket, each one’s requests were ďŹ lled. Whether it’s helping the community or doing business every day, addressing each person’s unique needs makes a dierence. With roots in local communities that
