BUSINESS CELEBRATES BEACH VOLLEYBALL

26 JUNE - 5 JULY 2015

LET’S CELEBRATE BEACH VOLLEYBALL! For two whole weeks this summer, the Dutch sporting calendar will be dominated by beach volleyball. From 26 June to 5 July, millions of people will see, experience, hear and read about the men’s and women’s World Championships, which will be held in four cities in the Netherlands. Beach volleyball is one of the fastest growing sports in the country, rising from just four clubs 10 years ago to more than 200 clubs today. Beach volleyball is one of the world’s most popular sports. It is consistently one of the most highly-rated and watched events at the Olympic Games. Who doesn’t remember the scenes from the Olympic beach volleyball tournament on Horse Guards Parade in London, around the corner from 10 Downing Street? London’s success made clear that the sport doesn’t only flourish on beaches, but it is also a big success at iconic urban locations. The 2015 FIVB World Championships Beach Volleyball are organised by sports marketing agency TIG Sports and the Dutch Volleyball Association (Nevobo). This brochure outlines the atmosphere and the impact of the event, as well as the diverse range of sponsorship and hospitality opportunities available.

'This Beach Volleyball World Championships will inspire the whole country’

‘I was asked to play beach volleyball in the twilight of my volleyball career.’ I seriously considered it, but after a long period as an on-court volleyball player, my family deserved more of my attention. Many years later I was given a second opportunity to feel the sand between my toes. As tournament director of Transavia Grand Slam Beach Volleyball, I soon realized that this sport simply has everything. It is definitely a high-performance sport, but it is also a lot of fun and very entertaining. Sun, summer, happiness; beach volleyball evokes so many wonderful associations. So it no longer surprises me that the sport is also experiencing explosive growth in popularity in the Netherlands. And I know for certain that many more people will become inspired after this year’s World Championships. I definitely appreciate the huge group of recreational players, but I am also looking forward to watching the top teams represent our country on the global stage. With Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen, the Orange team has the reigning world champions on the pitch. They will be defending their title in their home country, along with the current European women’s champions, Madelein Meppelink and Marleen van Iersel. So there are more than enough reasons to look forward to the World Championships that will be held in four attractive and enthusiastic cities. We have selected the top locations in The Hague, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Apeldoorn, all with first class facilities for spectators, sponsors and invited guests. Thousands of beach volleyball fans from across the world will be able to enjoy the events from close quarters. This sporting festival will be celebrated with family, friends and business relations. And, I hope, with you as well!’

From a journalistic viewpoint this World Championships, one year prior to the Games, is a ‘must have’. A sport such as this deserves the fullest attention. 51% of Dutch sports fans

are interested in beach volleyball to a greater or lesser extent

Beach volleyball’s growth in the Netherlands is staggering. In 2004 there were just four beach volleyball clubs, but by 2014 the number had risen to more than 200. The number of tournaments for recreational and top-level players is increasing apace, and the growing number of indoor beach locations means that the game can be played year-round.

With the current world champions (men) and European champions (women) in house, fans’ expectations for the 2015 World Championships are high. Over the last ten years, the Netherlands has achieved incredible international results. The Netherlands Volleyball Association (Nevobo) has invested considerably in training talented beach volleyball players. The training centre in The Hague is clearly bearing fruit.

Beach Team Nederland The national team operates from the National High Performance Centre in The Hague under the name Beach Team Nederland (BTN). The selection is divided into Top Teams and Talent Teams. The top teams practise their sport full-time. Expert coaching and support staff are also linked to BTN.

Marleen van Iersel (26) & Madelein Meppelink (24)

Alexander Brouwer (26) & Robert Meeuwsen (25)

Nummerdor (38) is the most experienced and illustrious Beach Team Nederland player. He and Varenhorst (24) started last season with different partners, but played the final tournament of the year together. It proved to be a match made in heaven, as the two demonstrated with their tournament triumph at the São Paulo Grand Slam. Suddenly, The Netherlands has another top doubles team.

Van Iersel (26) and Meppelink (24) have only formed a doubles pair since this year. Both had already been successful internationally in other teams, but the combination of the two proved to be a stroke of genius. Their hard work in the winter paid off at the European Championships in Italy, where they won the European title. They added another bronze medal to their trophy collections during the final Grand Slam of the season.

Brouwer (25) and Meeuwsen (26) experienced their finest hour to date at the Poland World Championships in 2013. To everyone’s surprise, the pair’s ‘power volleyball’ beat one renowned team after the other. Nobody could measure up to the pair in the finals either, so at the 2015 World Championships they will be able to defend their title in their home country.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL CONQUERS THE NETHERLANDS In 2015 the Netherlands will welcome the best 96 beach volleyball teams from around the world. The World Championships is the biannual high point of international beach volleyball; a unique event where top-level athletics, fans, the business world and government come together.

Experience The Netherlands has a reputation for organising and innovating international beach volleyball tournaments. Over the past few years, the country has hosed successful European Championships, World Tour events and Grand Slams. This will also be the first time that four cities will cooperate to host the event together. De stadiums Beach Volleyball has long been more than just a beach sport; in fact, it is ideal for playing in a city centre. The four World Championship cities all offer special locations. The group phase matches and the eighth-finals and quarter-finals will be played on Dam Square in Amsterdam, Marktplein in Apeldoorn, on the quay in front of the renowned steamship ss Rotterdam in Rotterdam and the floating stadium on the Hofvijver in The Hague. The opening night, semi-finals and finals will also take place on the latter location. The floating stadium has a capacity for 5,500 spectators. The stadiums in Apeldoorn, Rotterdam and Amsterdam offer some 2,000 seats. Each city has a tournament ambassador to take care of media and VIP guests at each location.

ROTTERDAM Rotterdam is the Netherlands’ hard-working port city, so a location beside the ‘pride’ of the city was an obvious choice. The ss Rotterdam is the famous passenger ship on Katendrechtse Hoofd. The quay on which the renowned ship is berthed offers ample space for a comfortable beach stadium for 2,000 spectators, training areas and side events. VIP reception The ss Rotterdam is the ideal location for hospitality opportunities. It is also possible to book an overnight stay here. Players will be accommodated on the ship during match days and the media centre will also be housed on the steam ship.
