Raising funds to save the tiger in the wild www.tigertime.info

ABOUT TigerTime and ‘Stars & Stripes’ Founded by British wildlife artist and conservationist, David Shepherd CBE, TigerTime is a campaign run by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation to raise awareness and funds to save the tiger in the wild. “With only an estimated 3,200 tigers left in the wild TigerTime was launched to increase awareness and funds for the vital conservation projects that my Foundation supports in India, Thailand and the Russian Far East,” explains David Shepherd. “I for one refuse to stand by and watch the tiger become extinct.” The campaign works by engaging new audiences through social media networks around the world. Its aim is to spread the word about the plight of this iconic big cat and to inspire people to join the fight to save the tiger by campaigning for changes to the law governing the trade in endangered species and raising funds to support the Foundations vital work in the field. TigerTime has a wealth of celebrity supporters whose activity on social media and through the contribution of their time is helping to give voice to the campaign and to the tiger. TigerTime is indebted to the celebrities who have helped with its ‘Stars & Stripes’ celebrity postcard event and hope that it will raise much needed funds to conserve this most beautiful of cats.

It is extraordinary that we have allowed the loss of more than 90% of wild tigers in the last 80 years due to deforestation and the hideous carnage of man’s greed. David Shepherd’s Wildlife Foundation is dedicated to turn this accelerating decline in tiger numbers around and prevent the tiger from being lost forever. TigerTime is his campaign to make this happen and I totally support this laudable movement and I implore you all to sign up now at www.tigertime.info

We know that these magnificent animals are in danger so to just sit back and watch them die out should be unthinkable. Please get behind TigerTime and help them save the wild tiger.

Joanna Lumley OBE actress, former-model and author

Animals share the earth with us: that is to say, they are equal partners in the right to live on this planet. In our anxiety to make the world a better place for ourselves, let us be very careful that we don’t obliterate the needs of other species. If the tiger disappears from the wild because of our behaviour we humans shall have lost all claims to be called civilised and compassionate. The greatest enemy is indifference. Please join TigerTime right now to help to save the lives and habitat of these magnificent creatures. This is extremely urgent. The clock is ticking: real time is running out.

Sandi Toksvig

comedian, author, broadcaster and actor

We live in an age where ‘people power’ is achieving wonders. It is literally changing the world. TigerTime is the way that ‘people power’ can save a magnificent species. Please, join us, get on board – sign up, spread the message and donate to our field projects – together, we can save the wild tiger!

Nigel Barker

fashion photographer and former model based in New York

We live in a wonderful and extraordinary yet fragile world. The concept that we could witness the extinction of any animal during our lifetime, should make us all stop and take action. The fact that it is the mightiest and most alluring only makes the situation more grave. The good news is that we can stop it, but only if we do something about it. This is our beautiful world, let’s treat it with the respect and honour it deserves. So for the tiger in every one of us, please roar as loudly as you can until we save this magnificent cat.

Tigers are in our dreams when we are children, and they must remain in our lives when we are adults. Only we can make this happen. Posterity will damn us if we allow these magnificent creatures to be destroyed. Our legacy must be to create not destroy. Support the http://tigertime.info campaign. We have no choice - it must be done.

Jody Craddock professional footballer

We’ve grown up listening to stories throughout our childhood of the majestic tiger, presuming that they will always be part of our planet. But if their demise continues at the current rate it won’t be long before the tiger becomes extinct and all that will remain is a ‘once upon a time story’. Please take a few minutes to show your support for TigerTime and help tigers remain part of our future generations lives.

Sarah-Jane Honeywell television presenter and actress

If we lose this magnificent, magical creature carelessly we will not only be letting the planet down, we will let our children down. TigerTime is trying to help us make a difference, let’s make sure we help them make it happen. Save the tiger - we don’t want this animal to just exist in stories and our imagination - it belongs on Earth with us, real and vibrant.

As a massive animal lover it is appalling to watch as the human race is on the verge of annihilating the wild tiger population. We have a responsibility to ensure the survival of these magnificent big cats in the wild. We should be ashamed that the number of wild tigers has fallen from 100,000 to just over 3,000 in 80 years. There are various things that can be done to help stop this & taking a few seconds to sign up to TigerTime is the least any conscientious animal lover can do.

Jon Richardson comedian

I’m very glad that there are organisations like TigerTime fighting to remind people of the responsibility that all humans have to protect the vulnerable, whether they walk on two legs or four. Eradicating species through greed and arrogance is a depressing part of our history and that it threatens to be a part of our future is an embarrassment to us all. I have signed up at www.bantigertrade. com and would ask anyone reading this to do the same.

Sir Stirling Moss former English racing driver

Nothing compares with the majesty of a wild tiger. There is something almost mystical about its power and presence. It has never been more threatened. With only 3,200 left in the wild they are facing extinction. Never has it been more urgent for everyone who cares about our planet and its wildlife to join forces to save this iconic animal. A world without tigers is unthinkable. Please, just for a few seconds, put all your other cares and worries aside and sign up to www.tigertime.info. I know in my heart that it will be one of the most important things you do today.

ART FOCUS: 2063 by Martin Hayward-Harris entry in the 2013 Wildlife Artist of the Year competition What inspired you to make the piece?

The BBC documentary Lost Land of the Tiger (2012) - which showed tigers moving across borders and through mountain ranges and revealed that wild tigers are increasingly becoming trapped amongst pockets of civilisation - inspired the title of my work. The presenter, TigerTime supporter Gordon Buchanan’s initial joy upon discovering the tiger, and then his mounting sadness upon realising what was happening was palpable. It really brought home to me that there is only a short time left to give these majestic creatures back the freedom and the territory they need to once again breed successfully, otherwise there is a very real risk they will be extinct within 50 years.

How long did it take and what was the process?

The sculpture took three months to make. It references a real tiger skull, but is not cast from one. The open jaw was designed in from the beginning. The cranium was made from small wooden panels which were then plated in sections of flexible sheet. An internal casting was then made which was coated in eight layers of Gesso (a mixture of calcium carbonate and glue). The separate lower jaw was made from plate steel and incorporates stainless steel rod and carbon fibre. The whole sculpture was then hand polished and coated with clay bole. The final process was gilding by hand with 23.5 carat gold using the water gilding method. This was carried out by a professional gilder and took more than two months to complete.

What message are you trying to convey?

There are now only an estimated 3,200 tigers left in the wild. At present rates of attrition, and without serious efforts at conservation, they are predicted to become extinct in 50 years’ time - in 2063 - that date being chosen as the title of my work. I wanted to make a sculpture that would provoke thought and debate around the threat of extinction and that - unless we act, and act now - the tiger will be no more. 50% of the sale price of ‘2063’ will help support tiger conservation projects in India, Russia and Thailand. For more information please call 01483 272323.

You can help save the tiger by supporting TigerTime or buying any of the tiger art exhibited at the 2013 Wildlife Artist of the Year - June 4-8, Mall Galleries, London.
