Volusia (September 16, 2010) ARCHES (continued): • The Chinese are known for their mystical and mythical reasoning that is reflected in their building, design and just about everything they do. The Dagu Bridge in Tianjin, China, has two asymmetrical arches said to resemble the sun and moon. The bridge crosses the Haihe River and its motto is: “The sun and the moon dance with the golden dragon.” • Natural arches show the remarkable beauty of nature. It is phenomenal to see the rock structures that occur with only nature as the architect. The Natural Arch and Bridge Society (NABS) created a list of the “Big 13” natural arches that have spans over 200 feet (61 m). Of those, six are in Utah, four in China, and one each in Colorado, New Mexico and Chad. The NABS assembled experts to come up with standards and definitions for measuring natural arches, but a simple definition of the span is, “the horizontal extent of unsupported rock.” Their website is a great resource for information about arches: www.naturalarches.org.

• According to the NABS, the largest arch in the “Big 13” is Fairy Bridge on Buliu River, Guangxi, China, with a span of 295 feet (90 m). Raft trips under the arch are a popular tourist attraction in the area. •
Utah is home to Arches National Park, which contains over 2,000 natural stone arches. The 73,000-acre (29542 ha) area is full of spires, balanced rocks, canyons and magnificent sandstone arches.

President Herbert Hoover signed legislation on April 12, 1929, creating Arches National Monument, and then on November 12, 1971, Congress changed the status to Arches National Park.
• The park is a Mecca for hikers and bikers and arch-seekers in the fall and spring. Since this area of Utah has a “high desert” climate, the summers can be very hot. • Delicate Arch is one of the most famous arches in Arches National Park. It is the arch seen on Utah license plates, advertisements, tourism magazines and pamphlets. • One of the largest of the 2,000-plus arches in the park collapsed in 2008. Wall Arch was the 12th largest in size with an opening beneath the span that was 71 feet (22 m) wide and 33-1/2 feet (10 m) high. No one saw it collapse. • Landscape Arch in Arches National Park is the second largest on the NABS list of the “Big 13.” It has a span of 290 feet (88 m) and in the thinnest section is only about 6 feet (2 m) thick. According to the NABS, “This arch could collapse at any time: any day, any year, any decade, or any century.” Plan a trip to see it now before it is too late! • Next in line to Landscape Arch in size is Kolob Arch in Zion National Park, Utah, with a span of 287 feet (87 m). • Another park set aside to protect natural arches is Arches Provincial Park on the western side of Newfoundland. There are three arches (There were four; one collapsed.) that are all 15 feet (4.6 m) high. • Two interesting temporary bicycle arches were built for events in 2006 and 2007. Toronto had a bike arch that was constructed in the summer of 2006 at Queens Quay. The second bike arch was built at the Burning Man Festival at Black Rock Desert, Nevada, in 2007. • The first monument dedicated to world peace is astride the international border between Blaine, Washington, and Surrey, British Columbia. The International Peace Arch, dedicated in 1921, represents the longest undefended boundary in the world with one foot anchored in Canada and the other in the United States. • The Peace Arch is one of the first earthquake-proof structures to be built in North America. It is 67 feet (20 m) high, made of concrete and reinforced steel. The foundation has 76, 14-inch (36 cm) pilings driven 25-30 feet (7-9 m) in the earth. The inscription on the east side of the Peace Arch reads, “May These Gates Never Be Closed.” It is one of the few world landmarks listed on the Historic Registries of two countries. • Jackson, Wyoming, (the area is known as Jackson Hole) has four elk antler arches at the corners of Town Square Park in the center of the Western town. The arches were first put up in the 1960s by the Rotary Club, using antlers gathered from the nearby National Elk Refuge. Male elk shed their antlers every spring and grow new ones in the summer. Each arch, made from about 2,000 antlers, weighs 7,000-10,000 pounds (3175 – 4500 kg). A campaign to replace the antler arches started in 2006. The Rotary Club of Jackson Hole has been auctioning off the old arches and replacing them with new ones. These are definitely tourist attractions worth keeping. Millions of tourists from all over the world have had their pictures taken under the arches.

Writing a Solid Resume
If you’ve revamped your resume for job hunting, chances are you’ve tinkered with it so much that you can no longer see it clearly. Here are some thoughts and ideas to consider before you send it out. In many cases, you’ll have only about eight seconds to grab someone’s attention. There are two formats to consider in writing a resume: chronological versus functional. In one, you describe your past jobs starting with the most recent and then work backward. In the other, you organize your skills. Which one you use is up to you and can depend on the type of position you’re seeking. In some cases a combination will work best.

Depending on the jobs you’re applying for, you might need multiple resumes. In some, you might want to leave off that you have a Ph.D. and speak multiple languages. In others those qualifications could be important. Many resume services advise starting with a statement of your objective: What kind of job are you looking for? If there are certain keywords for your industry, use those. It might be a machine that scans your resume. If you’re just beginning to do your resume and you’re at a loss about where to start, look at samples online. Even if you’re able to hire someone to do the work, having an idea in advance about the finished product might well reduce your cost of having the resume prepared.

If you’ve been out of work and don’t know how to account for that period of time, don’t fudge the truth. Ideally you’ll have some volunteer experiences to list. If you’re currently working and feel that your job is secure, great! But take the time to write down the things you’ve accomplished in your current job, as well as the ones you’ve had before. If the worst should happen and you’re handed a pink slip, having that information already written down will be a big help when you’ll likely be worrying about multiple issues. DOLLY PARTON The fourth of 12 children, Dolly Rebecca Parton grew up in a one-room cabin on a tobacco farm in Locust Ridge, near Sevierville, Tennessee. Her hometown has benefitted from her in many ways, thanks to her generous nature and her celebrity status. • Growing up in a large family that attended the local Pentecostal Church, Parton started singing as a child. By age 10 she was already making appearances on local television and radio shows in nearby Knoxville. • Parton graduated from high school in 1964. She knew early on that she wanted a career in music and left for Nashville the day after graduation. She met Carl Dean her first afternoon in Nashville. They were married two years later and are still together now after 44 years of marriage. • Parton’s first album, “Hello, I’m Dolly,” was released in February 1967. That same year she joined the weekly “Porter Wagoner Show.” Porter was a superstar, and his show was viewed by over 45 million people in 100 markets. When Parton was invited to join him and started singing duets with Porter, her career took off. Parton and Porter recorded 14 Top Ten hits together, touring the country and even appearing on the Grand Ole Opry together. She remained on his show for seven years and then became a solo artist in 1974. • Parton not only became famous for singing her songs but also for writing most of them. She has written more than 3,000 songs. In her own words, “I’ve always been a writer. My songs are the door to every dream I’ve ever had and every success I’ve ever achieved.” Some of her early solo hits were “Coat of Many Colors,” “Joshua” and “Jolene.”

Good Housekeeping Twice-Baked Potatoes Caesar
Try these potatoes with your favorite steak dish. 3 (about 6 ounces each) small baking potatoes 2 tablespoons margarine, substitute butter 1 small garlic clove, crushed with press 1/2 cups sour cream 4 anchovy fillets, minced, substitute 1 teaspoon anchovy paste 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon grated fresh lemon peel 1/8 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper 1/2 cup (plus 2 tablespoons) grated Parmesan cheese 1. Preheat oven to 450 F. With fork, pierce potatoes in several places. Place potatoes on oven rack and bake 35 minutes or until fork-tender. 2. Cut each potato lengthwise in half. With spoon, carefully scoop out potatoes, placing flesh in medium bowl and leaving potato-skin shells intact. 3. In small saucepan, melt margarine over medium heat. Add garlic and cook 15 seconds. 4. With potato masher, mash potatoes with margarine mixture, sour cream, anchovies, salt, lemon peel, pepper and 1/2 cup Parmesan. Spoon mixture into 4 reserved potato-skin shells, mounding slightly. 5. If you like, cover and refrigerate remaining 2 shells for use another day. Place potatoes in shallow baking pan; sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons Parmesan. 6. Return potatoes to oven and bake about 15 minutes or until hot on the inside and golden on top. • Each serving: About 275 calories, 15g total fat (7g saturated), 24mg cholesterol, 620mg sodium, 27g total carbohydrate, 2g dietary fiber, 10g protein. RECOGNIZE DOMESTIC ABUSE: It may sound strange, but people sometimes have trouble recognizing that they are being abused. Recognizing abuse may be especially difficult for someone who has lived with it for many years. A person might think that itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just the way things are and that thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing that can be done. People who are abused might mistakenly think they bring it on themselves by not acting right or by not living up to someones expectations. Someone growing up in a family where there is violence or abuse may not know that there are other ways for family members to treat each other. A person who has only know an abusive relationship may mistakenly think that hitting, beating, pushing, shoving, or angry name-calling are perfectly normal ways to treat someone when youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re mad. Seeing parents treat each other in abusive ways might lead a child to think thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a normal relationship. But abuse is not a normal or healthy way to treat people.
