I am often asked why we chose MacPhail as Thursday Musical’s new home when there are so many other venues that could house us. Antonello Hall was chosen after an exhaustive 5 year search. We developed a list of 16 criteria that we needed in a hall, from excellent acoustics to green room facilities to whether or not Thursday Musical’s piano could be moved there. We looked at over 20 locations and while no location was “perfect,” Antonello Hall met more of our criteria than any other site. Moving our beautiful Steinway piano, which was a gift from Bob Schmitt in memory of his mother Margaret Schmitt, a Thursday Musical member for over 70 years, was one of our greatest concerns. That is one of the reasons (among many) that we are so pleased with our move to MacPhail. Our piano now has a new home in a third floor classroom and is receiving the loving attention that all pianos at MacPhail receive. Every piano at MacPhail is tuned every two weeks. The entire building is climate controlled, with optimum temperatures and humidity for the pianos. And maintenance on the pianos is done as needed. Our piano is very happy here! Even though our piano is not available for our performances, we have two exceptional Steinways to choose from in Antonello Hall. The Steinway CD49 has a wonderful story that Doug Schmitt shared with me. It seems this piano was part of the Piano Bank that Steinway requires all of its dealers, including Schmitt Music, to maintain. Steinway New York retains ownership of these 7’ and 9’ Concert Grands and the dealers must maintain them for about 10 years. They get the best care and maintenance during this time. When Steinway decides to retire them, the dealer has the option to purchase them and then sell them on to their next fortunate owners, and MacPahil was that fortunate buyer. During their time in the Bank, Steinway Artists are asked to sign the gold plates of the pianos that they particularly love. After 10 years, the really great

ones end up littered with signatures. This Steinway has these signatures: Emanuel Ax, Lydia Artymiuw, Robert Levin, Jonathan Bliss and Rich Dworsky, among others. The next time you attend an Artist Series concert, come up and look at that gold plate! I hope to see you at MacPhail! Liz Nordling, President

Thursday Morning Artist Series 2015 MPR’s Classical music host Steve Staruch returns to Thursday Musical on January 22, 2015 to present a Living Concert Notes program. Artists performing on the program include José A. Zayas Cabán, who will perform a Mozart transcription of the Duo for Violin and Viola, but this time on saxophone with Shelley Washington on baritone saxophone. Stephanie Thorpe, soprano, will perform Lori Laitman's song cycle A Metropolitan Tower. An awardwinning composer, Laitman’s songs are performed widely in the United States and abroad. The Allen-Mishler Piano Duo rounds out the program with selections from Six Pieces for Piano Duet, Op. 11 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. On February 5, the performers will present a program of 20th century repertoire. New Artist member Rolf Haas (violin) will present works by Witold Lutoslawski, Astor Piazzolla, and Franz Waxman. Percussionist Bob Adney will present works by Elliot Carter - Figment V for Marimba and Saeta and March from Eight Pieces for Four Timpani, and mezzo-soprano Jocelyn Kalajian will perform Histoires Naturelles by Maurice Ravel. This concert will also feature Crystal Cheng, piano, a 2014 Young Artist Scholarship Competition winner. Come early for these wonderful concerts. Chase the mid-winter chill away with some coffee and morning treats (served prior to each program)! Monica Murray Co-Vice President - Artist Series

One hundred eighteen members enjoyed the Home Programs offered in October. One venue was at Julie Ann Greif’s home in historic Lowry Hill in Minneapolis. Her home was built in 1916 for grocery magnet George Freeman and he and his wife lived there for 30 years. It was built as a two- story home for entertaining. A third floor was added in 1966 and then a third floor extension was added in the 1990s. Julie said when they looked at the house, her young son went to the third floor, came down and said calmly, “Mama, this is it!” The beautiful music provided that morning by Laura Handler, Baroque cello and Gene Swanson, classical guitar, was moving. It was a beautiful combination with the home, the music, and the fall colors. It was chamber music in the best possible setting. Please save the April 23 date for the next Home Programs and plan to treat yourself to a special time. It is a privilege we have as members to attend these programs in our member’s homes, with music provided by our Thursday Musical musicians. It is also a perfect opportunity to enjoy coffee, visiting with old friends, and making new ones. Sandra Haines Home Program Reservations

Community JAN FEB 2015 Concerts

Community Concerts Thursday Musical’s Community Concerts continue to bring high quality performances to many venues in the Twin Cities area. Concerts in January and February will be presented in such wide-reaching areas as Saint Louis Park and Eden Prairie, as well as in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. Be sure to check the complete listings on page 8 of this newsletter and attend a concert in your own neighborhood. January is a busy month for Community Concerts. Thursday Musical’s newest venue is the Saint Anthony of Padua Chapel at Catholic Eldercare, a senior residence in Northeast Minneapolis that features a lively concert series in its chapel. Thursday Musical Pianist Gail Olszewski will appear on this concert series on January 11, 2015, performing a program of Finnish piano music. The concert will be filled out by the Second Winds trio: Amy Morris, flute, Nina Olsen, clarinet and Laurie Merz, bassoon, who will perform music by Schumann, Zoeller, Walckiers and Allier. Thursday Musical returns to Walker Place on January 14 with an exciting program given by the Ariel Trio and Nicola Melville, pianist. The Ariel Trio (Kathryn Christie, violin, Sandra Haines, cello, and Nancy Lichtenstein, piano), which has performed continuously since 1988, will bring Mozart’s Trio in E major, K. 542, a set of variations written by Beethoven on the song “Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu,” by Wenzel Müller, and a trio arrangement of a movement of Claude Bolling’s Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano. Nicola Melville will present an eclectic mix of old and new. Schubert's charming German Dances, D. 783, rub shoulders with a brand new work, Gareth Farr's beautiful miniature, Gem. The program is rounded out by William Albright's expansive modern ragtime masterpiece, Nightmare Fantasy Rag, which is a thrilling medley of foot-stomping and gently expressive ragtime piano. On January 23, another new venue for Thursday Musical, Summit Place of Eden Prairie, will feature performances by Laurie Patton, flute, Susan Jones, oboe and Charles Lilienfeld, piano. This trio will perform a selection of movements by Baroque composers Jean-Baptiste Loeillet and Georg Philipp Telemann, as well as William Grant Still’s charming Miniatures, a suite of five pieces representing various musical styles unique to the South and Southwest United States, Mexico and Peru. Soprano Carolyn Pratt will sing the other half of this program, treating her audience to “Romance is for the Night,” a selection of Broadway songs by composers such as Bernstein, Kern, Rodgers and Hart, and Porter. While Thursday Musical expands its presence in the community by programming concerts at new venues, our longtime associations continue to be highly valued. One of these places is the Kenwood of Minneapolis. Our January 30 Community Concert there will bring a quite diverse program of French music. Piano duet team Ann Buran and Lynn Shackelford will be performing Gabriel Fauré’s quintessentially lovely Dolly Suite, while oboist Carrie Vecchione, violist Stella Anderson and pianist Mary Goetz will collaborate to present Deux Rhapsodies by Charles Martin Loeffler. The Loeffler work consists of two movements based on Symbolist poetry, combining a darkness of spirit with lush and ecstatic tonal colors.

February brings more music to the community from Thursday Musical. Another longtime Community Concerts venue, Augustana Apartments, will host a concert on February 7 by soprano Debra Gilroy and pianist Mary Jo Gothmann. Together they will present a set of songs by Johannes Brahms, Jean Sibelius and Noel Coward. Flutist Amy Morris will also perform on this concert. On February 13, Tenor Jason Hernandez will collaborate with his wife, flutist and pianist Libby Laufers, at Menorah Plaza in Saint Louis Park. The duo will celebrate the Valentine’s Day holiday with a program of “Love Songs of the Swing Era,” featuring music by Gershwin, Loesser and Porter. The February Community Concerts calendar wraps up with an appearance on the Hazel Park Congregational church’s concert series. Soprano Melyssa Rice will sing on this program, and violinist Dragan Stojković will collaborate with pianist Mary Goetz to perform Richard Strauss’s monumental Violin Sonata. This concert series is open to the public and welcomes a free-will donation as admission. Such an array of programming gives Thursday Musical members a surplus of great music to help get us through these winter months. Plan to attend a Community Concert and enjoy all the benefits your membership can bring. Mary Goetz—Co-chair, Community Concerts

Meet Thursday Musical’s Newest Performing Members Başgöze – Pinto Piano Duo Debuting in 2009, the Başgöze – Pinto Piano Duo (Susana Pinto and Pınar Başgöze) has received significant acclaims, being described as: “wholly unified,” “musically captivating,” “technically powerful,” and “passionate.” A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Susana Pinto is currently on piano faculty at MacPhail Center for Music, and a DMA candidate in piano performance and pedagogy at the University of Iowa. She received her BA in piano performance at the Escola Superior de Musica de Lisboa under the tutelage of Tania Achot and her MA in piano performance and pedagogy from Central Michigan University. She is currently on faculty at MacPhail Center for Music.

Laura Hynes, soprano A Fulbright scholar in Paris, coloratura soprano Laura Hynes spent six years abroad in France and Germany, performing repertoire ranging from baroque opera with Les Arts Florissants to "classical cabaret" on French television and radio. She has performed lead opera roles, solo recitals, and concerts throughout Europe and the U.S., in venues including New York's Alice Tully Hall, the Barbican in London, and the Châtelet in Paris. Since moving back to the U.S. in 2010, she earned her doctorate at the University of Minnesota as the Carolyn Bailey & Dominick Argento Fellow. With her musical training rooted in piano and jazz song, the American soprano found her true calling in classical singing – from Cavalli to contemporary composers, with a soft spot for comic cabaret. laurahynes.com

IMSLP: Internet Resources for Musicians One of my favorite things to do when traveling is go to local music and used book stores to shop. for music. I have found some amazing items that are out-of-print - or newly in print that I could not get anywhere else - even on the internet. However, even I must acknowledge that the resources available online to musicians are staggering, and should keep anyone from complaining too loudly about the cost of music these days. My favorite resource is IMSLP (or, I’m Asleep, as some of us like to call it). Far from tranquilizing, this website is more of a time grabber than Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter combined. IMSLP stands for International Music Score Library Project. To put it simply, you can find musical scores - and the individual parts - to hundreds of thousands of works. There are recordings and links to purchase in cases where the music is not free.

A recent search for flute and piano music resulted in over 700 works - most of which I don’t already own. These pieces are downloadable and printable and include works in either the public domain, or modern works whose composers are eager to have their music played, and offer the music for the low cost of an acknowledgment if and when their piece is performed. Searchable by composer, time period, instrumentation, and more - I find myself spending hours on this site. My winter project is to play through most of the 700 works for flute and piano, and create a list of works for possible future performances and for my students. IMSLP researches each piece for public domain status, primarily in Canada, where they are based. This information is passed on to the user. Some music is obviously PD, but when it’s unclear (e.g., when it may be PD in one country, but not another) the site makes an effort to provide direction to the user. The site accepts donations to help offset costs of administration. For more information, go to IMSLP.org. Check out the FAQ page to learn more about it, and start shopping for new music!
