Not to blame the designers,of course-these hotels would want to showcase local color affixed with our ever renowned hospitality. Filipino hospitality, though, goeswell with other design schematics.Thunderbird Resorts at Poro Point, La Union is a perfect place to taste this fusion of culture and flavor. The buzz is no longer building up becausethe word is already out. Most everyone who needs a retreat getaway will have heard of this Santorinilike destination up north, and the international hotel franchise makes sure visitors get a taste of the real thing. The Mediterranean aestheticsis not accidental.The hotel chain was scouting for a location for this kind of resort developmentand Poro Point proved to be perfect (you can also believe the Messagein a Bottle story, which you will hear when you check-in here)."lf you look at the iocation, the cliff, it's really Santorlni. I think what they did is take a look at the location and found something that matched,that's why there's a lot of that breezy Mediterranean feel," sharesthe hotel's Property Consultant, ShaunThomsen. Poro Point was a former US military base now under the management of the BasesConversionDevelopmentAuthority (BCDA).Thunderbird Resortsis at the heart of the rapid developmentthat will rise in the area. With an airport and an international port, it is fast turning into a major businesshub not unlike the SubicBay Freeport in Zambales. All rooms here are provided with a breathtaking view of the ocean and the surrounding 3,450-yard, 9-hole golf course(The Cliffs). Thunderbird's clientele are mostly businessmencoming here for corporate affairs, with a 1itt1etime set asidefor somepleasure.Aside from the golf course,clients can aiso play at the FiestaCasino,where one may enjoy a bit of nightlife and live music as well. The laid back feel of the resort is a stark contrast to many popular beach destinations,like Boracay,where people go for the wild nights and parties. Mr. Thomsen says Thunderbird is not heading toward that direction either. "We have the white sand, we have the beach but we don't have the wild nights and parties like Boracay.We are more of a retreat, an escape from the hustle and bustle." The resort also offers an array of culinary delights. Right besidethe casinois VegasCafe,which servesa mix of Asian cuisine, from Filipino, Japaneseand Thai to Korean and Chinese.You can also go American with the large slabsof steaks cookedjust the way you like them. Within the resort is the exclusiveOlives Restaurantwhere you will get a taste of classic Mediterranean cooking. The restaurant uses only imported ingredients and mixes them with La Union's freshest catch. For a quick nightcap head to the Santorini Lounge,found right at the hotel iobby. and sip your favorite cocktail. The pool bar also servesdrinks and snackswhile you take a relaxing swim. What else is neededfor this place?Well, Mr. Thomsen is already complaining that he needs more rooms to accommodatethe influx of visitors, especiallythe weekenders.One expansion plan that may solve this problem is The Point, a residential villa right inside the hotel property, where owners will enjoy comfortablegolf and beach resort living. The project has three phasesand the first one is already underway. The resort can be reachedvia land or air. SEAiR recently opened flights going straight to Poro Point airport, but the five to six-hour drive going here is well worth it. The minute you drive through the entryway and snatch a glimpse of that turquoise dome and the seabeyond it, only one word will come off your mouth: WOW!
