T

his year’s festival is special for many reasons. In 2013 we celebrate our 7th and biggest ever Thought Bubble, reflecting a journey that began in 2007 and took place on one day in the basement of Leeds Town Hall, attracting an audience of just over 500 people. As attendance and interest has grown (10,000 people attended the festival in 2012), Thought Bubble’s status as a major international comic book and graphic novel festival has become cemented with a series of workshops, masterclasses, panel discussions, screenings and a line-up of special events taking place across Leeds for over a week each November. Our centrepiece event this year is the Thought Bubble comic book convention which will take place over two days on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November in three of Leeds’ largest exhibition halls - New Dock Hall, Royal Armouries Hall, and the specially opened Allied London Hall. We’ve put together a fantastic line-up of international artists and writers whose amazing work shows the true diversity of comic book and graphic novel storytelling. The convention will also be filled with hundreds of exhibitors from all over the UK, from self-published artists and writers to the best retailers in the country, and with two days you can browse and wander around the convention at your leisure.

A

s a major celebration of comic books and graphic novels, Thought Bubble is the premier destination for stalwarts of the comic book community, as well as a place of discovery for young people and adults who haven’t read a comic book before. Ultimately, however, the success of Thought Bubble is down to you, our attendees, who have helped make each event very special and unique. Whether you’re a cosplay enthusiast or curious firsttime visitor, we look forward to welcoming you to our biggest and best festival to date. The 7th Thought Bubble Festival includes a number of special screenings presented by Leeds International Film Festival. This year the Film Festival will celebrate its 27th anniversary and offers a special selection of films that are sure to appeal to Thought Bubble audiences, from incredible anime screenings and documentaries to Fanomenon — a celebration of some of the most mind-blowing genre films on the planet. Check www.leedsfilm.com for full programme and ticket information.

arts council

ince 2008, Thought Bubble has benefited greatly from Arts Council funding. It has helped us bring the sequential arts universe to wider audiences. In the past, funding has specifically supported new projects such as the Northern Sequential Arts Competition and our annual Artist Residencies, as well as workshops, masterclasses and special guest appearances. This year, with new support from the Arts Council, we present two new projects for audiences to experience and enjoy:

THIRD LINE EXHIBITION AND LIVE PAINTING Best Joined Up is a gathering together of British creators. Since 2005 they have toured the globe with their live illustration and painting events, creating new audiences, unique platforms and building fresh networks for Illustration, Street/Graffiti Art, Design, Animation and Sound. Best Joined Up will be returning to Thought Bubble 2013 with a crack team of Graffiti and Street Artists, Illustrators and Doodlers. You may remember them creating the bespoke three metre high page for 2000 AD in 2011, or their live film poster making with Mondo Posters in 2012. This year, Best Joined Up will create a series of huge-scale sequential arts pieces which will be created on site and then exhibited in our new Allied London hall - the project will be completed with live illustration over the comic con weekend. Please visit bestjoinedup.com for more information on their upcoming projects.

Bub’s Lounge Graphic novel overload? Superhero fatigue? With Thought Bubble getting bigger every year, we’ve created Bub’s Lounge - a quiet, calm area to escape the crowds and take some time away from the bustling convention halls. Bub’s Lounge is a space where you can do absolutely nothing if you want to - just kick back in a comfy chair and soak up the atmosphere - or if you want to do something there’ll be areas where you can get involved, maybe pick up some pens and do some drawing yourself, or watch one of our special guests get creative. Bub’s Lounge will be cucumber-like in its coolness. Stop by and relax a while...

Both events will be open 23 - 24 November in the Allied London Hall, New Dock All Ages • Free admission with convention badge • Exhibitions are free for under 12s, but an accompanying ticket-holding adult must be present. For tickets go to thoughtbubblefestival.com

Basha donned a variety of graphic personae – from the sometimes brutal cut-outs of her early Polish book jackets to voluptuous, almost psychedelic surrealism of her French film posters, and the works she produced are unforgettable. Here, the curator of an exhibition of her works running for the duration of the festival (see leedsfilm. com for more details), Daniel Bird, will give a free talk on Basha, her life, and her creations. 07 / Screening / Obscure Pleasures: Walerian Borowczyk Sun 17 Nov, Everyman Cinema, Albion Street, Leeds, 1600 (75 min), 12a, £8/£6 A brand new documentary on the Polish painter, sculptor and filmmaker Walerian Borowczyk. Using the list as a starting point, Obscure Pleasures offers

a portrait of Borowczyk that encompasses all facets of his artistic personality, including his post-impressionist paintings, socialist realist drawings, film posters, groundbreaking animations, revolutionary short films not to mention the taboo busting films from the 1970s onwards.

Ageing enfant terrible and master cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky returned to the fray after a decade long hiatus to present his incendiary, hallucinatory parable Santa Sangre, every bit as madcap and compelling as his early hits El Topo and Holy Mountain. Santa Sangre is a temple torn down by bulldozers over the protestations of its leader Concha, the wife of an unfaithful circus performer and the mother of Fenix (Jodorowsky’s son Axel). The Church is built on a gruesome crime scene, the first of many trials for the young Fenix which lead to his incarceration in a mental asylum.

Join Sarah from Wessenden Woollies, designer extraordinaire, and learn to knit and create your very own cute vampire bat in only 2 hours!

2000 AD Comic Competition Want to be the next great artist to draw Judge Dredd? Then take this opportunity to have your art seen by one of the world's best known publishers by entering the 2000 AD portfolio challenge! This year we have the ultimate prize – the winner of the portfolio session will get the chance to illustrate a Future Shock in 2000 AD! Join the ranks of the biggest names in British comic books by getting a paid strip from Tharg the Mighty! Budding artists should view the free sample script at thoughtbubblefestival.com, draw their own version of it, and bring their efforts to the portfolio sessions being held at the 2000 AD table at the Thought Bubble Comic Con on Saturday 23rd November. The six best efforts chosen by Tharg himself will then go before the searing eyes of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic and its art droids! Entries must be submitted in person at the Thought Bubble Convention, Saturday 23rd November, at the 2000 AD table in New Dock Hall.
