CHAIRS
HANCOCK Originally launched in Fall 2015 as a single armchair with a cotton shaker tape seat, Hancock has been revisited and now includes a side chair with the option of a vegetable tanned leather strap seat and accompanying Hancock Trestle Table, page 30. Reference to traditional furniture form has long been a practice of Thos. Moser. Here, the vehicle is the ladder back, a form made popular by, and typically associated with, the Shakers of the 18th and 19th centuries. So named after the Hancock Shaker Village, the chair offers a contemporary take on an historic furniture form. CHAIRS
TMC The TMC was inspired by a Windsor design that originated in England in the 1700s. In the early 1970s, Tom Moser set out to create a new generation of Continuous Arm Chairs. While it took him many years, and many prototypes, to perfect this difficult design, by the late '70s, the TMC made its debut to the delight and lasting admiration of customers old and new. The TMC has indeed become a Thos. Moser icon, and a top favorite in both residential and large contract installations to this day.

that highlights the elegant and unique symmetry of the growth
Harpswell was developed in Tom’s own workshop in the mid-90s

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE Whether walnut, ash, cherry, maple or white oak, the human connection to wood objects is
undeniable
and
visceral.
And
personal
preferences for the North American hardwoods we offer can vary as widely as the practical reasons for making a selection. In fact, crafting the same piece of furniture from different species can have different results; a new character can be seen to emerge. For example, the dark tone of walnut can emphasize form, while the pronounced grain of ash conjures a more tactile experience, and the darkening of cherry over time may establish a more classic and traditional position in a space. The impact on a given environment can be dramatic, depending on the species chosen; the natural characteristics of each offer unique benefits in a particular space. Says Chris Eramo, Interior Designer and Manager of Thos. Moser, Boston, "regardless of the species, and there are no wrong choices, the only rule I apply when furnishing a dining room, breakfast room, kitchen area or bedroom is to choose one wood tone as the “star� in each room. Formally influenced by the architecture of classic café chairs, the result is the product of several steam bent components crafted and assembled with a combination of machine and hand work. Both the chair and table provide evidence of our foremost commitment to quality through detail and precision craft, such as the hand-stitching at the backrest of the chair and the several moments of exposed joinery throughout each piece. AT A BEND IN THE ROAD In 2001, Warren and Amy Shaw adopted a 9-month-old baby girl from a Siberian orphanage. Little did they know then, that the trauma already suffered in Sofiya’s short life would lead them from despair to hope, and that they would be compelled to move beyond conventional treatment to find healing for both Sofiya and their family. What they learned on their journey would result in the creation of a safe place, on their own farm, to provide healing for other adoptive, foster and kinship families. The supports offered are specific to children with a history of neglect and abuse; a place to access specialized therapy in a non-clinical farm-type setting for the entire family. Today, At a Bend in the Road, a non-profit organization in Maine, is supported by generous grants, business sponsorships and personal gifts. Occupational Therapy, Counseling, Educational Supports and Horsemanship Programs are offered at no charge to some 40 children, ages 3-18, and their families. MY LETTER FROM ANDRÉ Craft has been my calling; the center of my family’s collective life’s work for some 45 years. Integral to our success have been the remarkable craftsmen in our own backyard in Maine, and as woodworkers, we have taught each other well. I have had the pleasure of knowing customers, architects and designers alike, and have been humbled to see our work even on the steps of the White House. This past year, I received an earnest and inspired request from a 9-year-old boy who lives "not too far away from the Rocky Mountains” of Canada’s far west, wanting to know “how you make the pieces of wood fit together without screws," explaining that he “has always wanted to build since I was very young." Young indeed. And so, to you André, my best advice for now is this: meaning in life is what we create. For you and me, it is created with our hands and God’s gift of a tree. I only hope your clarity of purpose will someday find its way onto the shop floor of Thos. Moser, and
