ly hard not to know why because staff are second-guessing everything. Willis added that some test results from the necropsy won’t be available for a few weeks, and those might help shed some light on the cause of death. The zoo is also home to April’s daughter “Allie, 22; April’s granddaughter “Taijah, born last summer; and 45-year-old “Semo, the father of Taijah. April arrived at the Minnesota Zoo in January 2008 and was on loan from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. April gave birth to four calves during her lifetime. “April was one of our most beloved animals. Since she arrived here a few years ago, she quickly became a guest favorite, Willis said. “She will be terribly missed by staff, volunteers, and all the zoo guests who met her.

THISWEEK NEWSPAPERS

One of the Minnesota Zoo’s four Atlantic bottlenose dolphins, 44-yearold “April, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, and zoo staff are awaiting test results that could help determine the cause of death. April had been suffering from “a few physical ailments in recent months and was undergoing treatment at the time of her death, according to zoo staff. “This was really a shock to us because the issues were minor, said Kevin Willis, the Apple Valley zoo’s director of biological programs. “We thought maybe she had a fungal infection. Willis characterized the zoo’s oldest female dolphin’s health issues as “age related. A necropsy (animal autopsy) was performed at the University of Minnesota on Tuesday to determine the cause of death. Initial tests came up blank.

Foreclosure open house set Feb. 22

Survey to poll county’s residents

The Dakota County Community Development Agency (CDA) will host a foreclosure open house from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, at the Apple Valley Municipal Center, 7100 W. 147th St. Homeowners who are worried about their mortgage payments or would like more information about the foreclosure process are encouraged to attend. Trained homeownership specialists will be on-hand to provide information about what happens during the foreclosure process, homeowners’ rights and recommendations for longterm housing needs. Homeowners will be able to meet confidentially with CDA staff to ask questions and get advice. Those unable to attend can call the CDA’s Foreclosure Hotline at (651) 6754555 to speak with a homeownership specialist.

Dakota County will send a survey to residents this month to find out what’s important to them and learn how they feel about Dakota County. The survey will be mailed to 2,500 randomly selected households in late February. Survey results will be available in May, just in time for county officials to review before the next budget cycle. The county chose to mail this year’s survey, instead of conducting it by telephone, to reach those who have dropped their home telephone service and use cell phones exclusively. The county is working with the National Research Center to do the survey.
