Union Streetin Vermont reveals a complex, psychologically artist's time probing body of work that indicates an artist who found Hillside Street much inspiration in both the awe-inspiring physical landscape that surrounded him at “Egypt” and in his own internal musings on life, death, and man's place in the world. The Bennington Museum, located at 75 Main Street Grandview St. (Route 9), Bennington has the largest public collection of Grandma Moses paintings in the world as well as the largest collection of 19th century Bennington pottery. In the other 7 galleries, the museum presents a 1924 Wasp Touring Car, one of only twenty produced, military artifacts, one of the earliest ‘stars and stripes’ in existence, fine and decorative arts and more. The museum is just a short ride from Manchester, Williamstown, and eastern New York, and is open every day July through October. Regular admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and students over 18. Admission is never charged for younger students or to visit the museum shop and café. ockwell Kent's "Egypt": Shadow and Light in Vermont, on view at the Bennington Museum, June 9 through October 30, 2012, is the first ever exhibition to focus on Rockwell Kent's life and work during his years in Vermont, 1919-1925. Kent purchased a hill farm called "Egypt" on the slopes of Red Mountain in Arlington, Vermont, 20 miles north of Bennington, in the spring of 1919, on the heels of his trip to Alaska. Concentrating on the years Kent and his family spent there, the exhibit draws attention to a time in his career when he solidified his reputation as one of the premier American artists of his time. Despite the avalanche of scholarly attention Kent received during the past fifteen years, the museum’s exhibition and its accompanying catalogue is the first comprehensive documentation of Kent’s life and work in Vermont. Including many major, rarely seen paintings from the artist's time in Vermont, as well as dozens of prints and drawings, this exhibition highlights a little-known aspect of

Summer Arts Highlights At The Bennington Center for the Arts
T
he Bennington Center for the Arts has now been in existence for almost twenty years but has never had a more impressive summer schedule. With fine art exhibitions such as the Oil Painters of America, the California Art Club and Artists for the New Century, and performers such as Tom Rush, those who relish the arts have a lot to look forward to in the coming months. Better known as "The Bennington" by art collectors and artists from around the country, the Center opens this season with “Walking Alone” an exhibition of their own creation, Artists for the New Century. The show focuses on artists that have a wonderful talent but for any number of reasons have not yet receive the national recognition they deserve. "While many of the artists are fairly young, many just haven't received the promotion or marketing to elevate them to the covers of the national magazines," notes Gallery Director, Shirley Hutchins. This show opens the 9th of June and is a great opportunity for not only art lovers who want to see what is new on the art scene but also for collectors in the area as all of the art work will be available for purchase. The following weekend is the opening of the seventeenth annual Art of the Animal Kingdom. This year the almost 100 piece show was juried by internationally recognized Wyoming artist Greg Beecham. Artists from around the country and abroad will display their work, with many coming to the opening festivities in on June 16th. The presentations and opening reception are open to the public on Saturday, free of charge. The entertainment season at “The Bennington” opens with Mozart's Abduction from the Seraglio, performed by the Hubbard Hall Opera Theater on June 16th. Additional events on the schedule include a classical pianist, classical guitarist and famed vocalist Tom Rush. To see this calibre of both fine and performing art one usually has to travel to major metropolitan areas. As residents of this area, we have not only the beauty that surrounds us but the beauty inside the walls of "The Bennington". Many people comment that they have driven by the Center time and time again but have never stopped. Perhaps this summer is the time to finally stop and see what they have to offer!

Covered Bridge Facts & Guide
Y
ou may pass through all five Bennington County covered bridges in a standard size automobile – one lane only. Bridges were covered to keep the wood dry and thereby avoid rot. This became the trend in 1805 when a bridge designed by Timothy Palmer, an architect, proved most durable. Most covered bridges aare painted red because iron ochre was an inexpensive pigment. Here is an early recipe for bridge paint: 2 qts skim milk, buttermilk or whey; 8 oz newly slaked lime, 6oz oil from ground flaxseed, 2oz turpentine; 1.5lbs pulverized ochre. The most common type of covered bridge is the “Town Lattice” style of construction. All Bennington County Bridges are of this type. There is a parking area and picnic tables located at the Henry Bridge, spanning the Walloomsac River.

The Holden-Leonard Mill A Landmark of Commercial Development Since 1865
V
ermont Mill Properties is located at 160 Benmont Avenue in Bennington, in the former Holden-Leonard Mill. This architectural landmark was built in 1865 and operated as a textile mill until its closure in 1949. In 1985, Southwestern Vermont Developmental Corporation started renovations on the mill. Local businessman and entrepreneur, Jon E. Goodrich, CEO of Vermont Mill Properties, joined the renovation efforts in 1989 and purchased the property in 2000. The Mill was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. In 1990, much of the building was rehabilitated for new uses and renovations are ongoing. Situated on 12.5 acres, the Mill now houses a wide variety of tenants, that range from manufacturing and retail space, professional and medical offices, to artist studios and a racquetball and fitness club as well as offering storage space rentals.

This Revolutionary War battle was an American victory that led to the defeat of the British at Saratoga by reducing British forces, preventing the capture of needed supplies, and galvanizing the American forces. Located 10 miles west of it’s namesake Bennington, VT, in the town of Walloomsac. Park at bottom and hike up if gate is closed. Easy 1⁄2 mile to top.

With good access, picnic areas, trails, and decent fishing, this is one of my favorite spots. The small mouth bass are very perky with lots of leaping out of the water, the water is very clean and cold. Mini beaches provide secluded options for swimming. A 2 mile hike will take you to the back side of Somerset Reservoir where you may hear the cry of nesting loons.

Deer ticks are common in the Shires, and can carry Lyme Disease. Protect yourself by using regular bug repellant, and checking for ticks after being outdoors. Removing any ticks within 48 hours prevents the transmission of Lyme Disease. Note: the deer tick nymphs are even smaller than adults, not much bigger than a speck, and have six legs instead of eight. You will sometimes notice the itchiness around the tick before you actually see it.

Owned by the Nature Conservancy, it is home to rare species of plants & flowers.It is also popular as a rappelling / climbing area and has cliffsfrom 30’ to 90’. aving grown up in The Shires, I’ve come to appreciate just how much our region has to offer. It was not always so. Like many kids growing up, I could not wait to move away from my home town and explore the world. So I traveled around the country and around the world, and in so doing made a surprising discovery… that the place I most loved was right back where I had started. Many agree and our region has long been a destination for travelers to Vermont. Famous for it’s foliage, but not just that, I hope these suggestions will give you some ideas on how you can create your own memories of a lifetime in The Shires.
SUGGESTED ITINERARIES Each of these suggestions represent a full day of activity. For a more relaxed pace, split over two days and include a night’s stay at a local motel or bed and breakfast. To include a show, do a half tour and then an early dinner to leave time to see a play at Oldcastle Theater or the Dorset Theater. Arts & Culture Tour #1

Cycling in The Shires
C
ycling in The Shires of Vermont is alive and well. While several organizations are currently collaborating to create an official “ride now” map for the region in the future, in the present the sport is thriving. There are many events lined up for those who want to hit the roads and byways of southern Vermont and the neighboring Berkshires this summer for activities from recreation to racing. Among them from north to south is the “Vermont Challenge.” This event originates at Stratton Mt. In its inaugural year this event offers 3-ride choices: The 4 day Grand Challenge; the 3 day Weekend Challenge and the 1- day Legendary “Gap” Century and Half Century. The Ride incorporates four major ski resorts and a signature town as key hosts for meals and lodging. In The Shires that town is Manchester. For more information on the “Vermont Challenge” visit www.vtchallenge.com. The Shires region’s signature race takes place in the spring of each year, this year it was held on May 5th and 6th. The “Tour of the Dragons” is a two-day, three stage event. The Saturday Time Trial and Downtown Criterium take place in Bennington, while the Sunday 62 mile Road Race takes place in Manchester and surrounding towns and is similar to the Tour de France where racers compete on cumulative overall time. Other cycling events include The Mt Equinox bicycle hill climb… the premier event for bicycle masochists. This year it's August 4. For info: http://www.gearupforlyme.com/. There will also be the annual time trial series in Bennington. These are single rider timed climbs up Prospect Mountain. The starting point is the Woodford town hall, each 3rd Tuesday of June, July,

Manchester-Arlington Bicycle Tour Route Directions: From Adams Park on Route 7A just north of Manchester’s Downtown, head down Center Hill, through the traffic signals at Route 11/30, and onto Richville Road. Continue south on Richville Road to River Road where a left turn continues you on your way downstream into Sunderland. At the Sunderland town highway garage, stay left and climb and then descend Sunderland Hill Road through the Chiselville Covered Bridge into East Arlington. Turn left at the Chippenhook Store onto Old Mill Road. After passing through East Arlington Village and climbing a short hill turn right onto South Road. At Route 313 turn right and continue over a rise to Warm Brook Road. Turn right and proceed a short distance to Ice Pond Road. Follow Ice Pond Road back into East Arlington Village, turn left onto Old Mill Road, and then right back onto Maple Street (Sunderland Hill Road). Retrace your route back through the Chiselville Covered Bridge along Sunderland Hill Road all the way to Richville Road, but now continue straight on River Road. After a short climb River Road intersects Route 7A in Manchester Village. At the Mark Skinner Library veer left onto West Road and proceed north to Ways Lane and follow it back down to Route 7A in Manchester Center. Turn left and continue back to Adams Park.

A Season Celebrating Legends, Legacy and History at SVAC
T
he Southern Vermont Arts Center, under the leadership of Executive Director, Joseph Madeira, announced their 2012 season of exhibitions and performances in their Arkell Pavilion. The new season spotlights artistic quality and excellence and continues on the tradition of presenting quality work by both regional and national visual and performing artists. The new season will feature exhibits such as Legends of Rock and Roll: Photos by George Kalinsky, and Weatherbound: The Art of Jay Connaway. SVAC opens the Arkell Pavilion with nationally touring show Neil Berg's 100 Years of Broadway and a season featuring performances by legendary performers like bluesman and Grammy award winner James Cotton, and Diamond Dave Sommerville, original lead singer of the DooWop group, the Diamonds. Chris Morrow, bookstore co-owner, has long had a commitment to environmental issues. "I have strong passion for working on the myriad issues facing our species and planet. I thank the State for recognizing our small efforts and Alan for working so assiduously on educating us on so many important topics." he Dollhouse and Toy Museum of Vermont, located in Bennington, has a large and lively collection of dollhouses, dolls, and vintage toys for boys, including trains, planes, cap pistols, puppets, circus trains, tin soldiers and trucks. The dollhouses include a large and ornate Victorian, an urban townhouse, a British Tudor, and a simple but cozy Cape Cod. All of them are fully furnished. The collection of dolls includes many of the Madam Alexander “Dolls of the World,” and Madam Alexander dolls based on such popular movies as “National Velvet” and “Gone With the Wind.” It also includes several dolls made by Ethel Santarchangelo, who for many years was a well-known doll maker in Bennington and a judge for international doll shows. The museum is housed in a Victorian-era cottage at 212 Union Street (at the corner of Valentine Street) that dates back to the 1860s. The museum is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 PM to 4 PM. uests arriving at Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home in Manchester, Vermont are struck by its beautiful surroundings and quickly learn why tens of thousands of annual visitors say, “Hildene is so much more than a house museum.” Discovery awaits them as they explore the mansion and grounds that three generations of President Lincoln’s descendants called home. The guest experience begins at the Welcome Center located in the Lincoln’s original carriage barn. It includes an observation bee hive, an interactive telegraph and model train with Pullman cars. This is also the site of The Museum Store where a wide range of distinctive items from Lincoln to Gilded Age, gardens, history, nature, farm and Vermont can be found. Visitors view a short video about the home and its famous inhabitants before walking or taking the shuttle to the house for a self guided tour or guided tour by prior arrangement. On a sunny day they will find Jessie Lincoln’s 1928 Franklin car parked out front. The Hoyt Formal Garden to the rear of the Lincoln’s mansion draws visitors, garden clubs, and horticulture enthusiasts from far and wide. The pattern is that of a stained glass window; the privet representing the leading, the flowers the glass. The peonies are best experienced from the end of May to mid-June during a time known at Hildene as the “Celebration of Peonies.” During the balance of the Vermont blooming season perennials of every color grace the garden. President Lincoln, whose iconic stovepipe hat is just one piece of the thought provoking exhibit: “The American Ideal: Abraham Lincoln and The Second Inaugural,” is set within the context of Lincoln’s greatest speech. Delivered during the Civil War, it harkens back to the then radical beliefs of equality, justice and opportunity for all, first enunciated in the Declaration of Independence. The exhibit thoughtfully uses text from the speech and artifacts from the collections of Hildene and Brown University’s John Hay Library, one of the five great Lincoln collections. If guests wish to extend their Hildene experience they can enjoy a visit to the 1903 Pullman palace car, Sunbeam, the Rowland Agricultural Center and cheesemaking facility at Hildene Farm, or linger in The Museum Store, filled with distinctive gifts and Vermont made products.
