y belief is that these questions are part of the DNA of an intrepid traveler. Deep curiosity about what is down the winding road, what lies a mile farther on, and what waits across that border. Wanderlust beckons us to embrace the unknown. Certainly, for the serious traveler, there is an endless list of “essential experiences” — not so much a bucket list, but rather the allure of the new, juxtaposed with previous journeys. Images of past destinations elicit an emotional connection, while a regular traveler will always lust for new adventures. A traveler’s inherent curiosity moves them to welcome every aspect of the excursion and to participate fully in every way: diving into exotic cultures; the ever-present delight of new cuisines, and capturing a rare cityscape vista. Finally, let’s not forget the heartfelt camaraderie with fellow adventurers who are eager to share stories and cherished travel memories. The true success of your journey includes the “what if?,” which expands in the planning stage, and tried-and-tested travelers always make room for spontaneity. Planning, which can sound quite rigid, is also key for managing those details that allow for open space and experience. As a seasoned traveler, my favorite word is serendipity — those treasures that appear when you are not looking for them. “Luck” can come from having your “eyes wide open.” There is such depth and texture in travel that only in-person and on-sight can make it real. Virtual travel, as imposed upon us over the past 18 months, filled the spaces of travel and experience, but can never replace what we touch personally. Despite all the challenges incurred by post-pandemic travel protocols, travel is still the way forward. May your travels be inspiring and many.

ince early 2020, our belief systems have been put to the test from a variety of standpoints, with what have seemed like endless days challenging us to the core. Despite this instability, as a global community, we rallied together in genuine support and encouragement, gently reminding one another that these times, too, shall pass. Thanks to this resilience, we have restarted forward momentum as many of our fellow global citizens are breathing in travel once again — expanding hearts toward distant destinations, experiencing new cultures, tasting delectable cuisines, and comingling with like-minded travelers. During the past 18 months, I continued to travel domestically — stopping in Washington D.C., Florida, California, Arizona, Colorado, Maryland, and many destinations in between. I experienced more of my own country and backyard than ever before — something I am sure many of you enjoyed doing as well. My heart fills with so much gratitude when I think back on these travels. I was able to witness firsthand how a significant number of our hotels remained open to serve as an important lifeline for their communities, providing a second home and much-needed hospitality, care, and concern to those most in need, from essential workers and front-line health professionals, to travelers who were stranded due to the ever-changing restrictions. I also felt incredible awe and inspiration when discovering how our properties were rising to the occasion by creating experiences that brought unity in the face of social distance enforcements. They converted ballrooms into classrooms to assist families confronting newly established homeschooling protocols while juggling work-fromhome mandates. They utilized outdoor spaces that would transform from open-air gyms in daylight to a romantic, intimate dining experience after twilight. Even wedding bells continued to be heard thanks to our hotels’ nimble efforts implementing technology solutions that allowed loved ones to participate virtually in the couples’ big day, from the walk down the aisle to the last dance. Their unique approaches renewed my belief that change creates opportunity and that to move forward, we need to pave unchartered pathways that allow us to revive recently missed or postponed experiences, events, and other milestones of all purposes and sizes. More than ever, the pandemic has solidified my unwavering belief in the power of coming together as a global family and the precious moments travel affords us.

Chefs and celebrities are using their star power to fight food insecurity BY KIMBERLEY LOVATO

SCOTT SUCHMAN

PRODUCTION

Founded in 2010 after the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, WCK’s main principle is to use food to fortify communities and strengthen local economies through sustainable and locally led solutions. In locations around the world, WCK has implemented programs on clean cooking techniques, food safety and sanitation, and culinary education, including École des Chefs, a professional culinary school in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, that graduates 40 skilled students per year for Haiti’s hospitality sector. In the more than a decade since Clockwise from above: Chef José its inception, WCK has responded to Andrés; Jon Bon Jovi and his wife hurricanes, wildfires, erupting volcanoes, Dorothea Bongiovi; Speaker of the floods, and conflicts, and has served more House Nancy Pelosi and Andrés than 50 million meals. The COVID-19 distributing food at the WCK during pandemic, however, hit WCK with a force far the COVID-19 pandemic greater than any storm they’d experienced. “We watched in vivid detail the challenges families faced during the pandemic, the long food lines, and farmers unable to sell their crops,” said WCK CEO Nate Mook. “But what also happened is that there was a bit of a reckoning and shift on the understanding of hunger in America. This was not a problem caused by COVID-19. Even in the best of times, families face hunger here and abroad. “It was unlike any disaster we’ve encountered, and we couldn’t be everywhere. We had to come up with a way to reach as many people as possible in big cities all the way to small towns,” he added. What they conceived was Restaurants for the People, a program that pays restaurants and kitchens across the U.S. to feed vulnerable communities, as well as the medical professionals on the front lines of the pandemic. To date, WCK has directly disbursed $160M to 2,500 small and independent restaurants in 35 states so they can create and serve fresh meals to communities in immediate need while keeping their lights on and employees working. “The restaurant community in America and around the world is very large, very deep. hef José Andrés built up an impressive empire of restaurants — two-Michelin-starred minibar in Washington, D.C., and The Bazaar in Miami’s South Beach to name just two — but it’s his huge humanitarian heart and philanthropic endeavors that are making the most impact right now. He is the vocal frontman of World Central Kitchen (WCK), a nonprofit organization that feeds people at the front lines of crises and natural disasters. Named Humanitarian of the Year by the James Beard Foundation in 2018 and twice named among TIME’s 100 Most Influential People, Andrés uses his public platform to fight against food insecurity, a plight that affects an estimated 700+ million people around the world.

to farmers and food companies and distributors, with access to gas, with access to refrigeration. That’s no matter where we are in the world. In an emergency, this is something very powerful,” said Andrés in The New York Times in June 2020. The pandemic hasn’t slowed him down. He and WCK continue to show up where they are needed most. WCK’s relief team has served more than 400,000 hot, nourishing meals to hospital workers in India. They’ve also partnered with relief organizations and restaurants in Gaza to prepare thousands of fresh, nourishing meals for people displaced and unable to access food. “Our mission has always been not just to feed people, but to work alongside communities to build their own resilience against food insecurity. Andrés wakes up every day thinking about how he can use his experience and platform to do this,” said Mook.

Another high-profile celebrity quietly working to eliminate chronic food insecurity is Jon Bon Jovi. The rock star and his wife, Dorothea Bongiovi, founded the JBJ Soul Foundation in 2006 to support programs that help fund community organizations and break the cycles of poverty and homelessness in the U.S. As part of an effort to alleviate the food insecurity in their home state of New Jersey, the couple created the JBJ Soul Kitchen in 2011, a community kitchen in Red Bank that offers three-course, home-cooked meals in a restaurant atmosphere. A second location soon followed in Toms River. Patrons are asked to make a monetary donation or pay through volunteering. More than 137,000 meals have been served, with 47% paid with donations and 53% with volunteerism. When the pandemic struck, Bongiovi said they kept their staff on full pay and adopted a to-go model, handing out food to their in-need population. JBJ Soul Kitchen then partnered with Rutgers University’s food service provider Gourmet Dining and opened its third location on the school’s Newark campus in early 2020. Although temporarily closed because of the pandemic, it is slated to reopen this fall. “Food insecurity is one of the most critical issues college students face today,” said Bon Jovi, when announcing the initiative. “We truly believe that when students are supported with basic needs and backed by their community, they can and will go on to do amazing things.” At the height of the pandemic, the Foundation received reports of 500% increases in requests for food on the East End of Long Island. It quickly mobilized, opening the JBJ Soul Kitchen Food Bank, which delivered more than 200 tons of food to seven pantries during the summer of 2020. “Our model is one of empowerment and dignity. We connect those in need with services and resources in the hope of improving their situation,” said Bongiovi.

GETTY

SOUL POWER

“Our model is one of empowerment and dignity. We connect those in need with services and resources in the hope of improving their situation,” said Bongiovi CONTINUING THE WORK

From easy and equal access to nutritious and affordable food to paying people a living wage, systemic changes are needed. Recently, there was a very public recognition of the vital importance of Andrés’ work when WCK received a $100M donation from Jeff Bezos following his Blue Origin space flight in July. “World Central Kitchen was born from the simple idea that food has the power to create a better world,” said an emotional Andrés at the press conference after the announcement. “A plate of food is a plate of hope.” He later said, “We’re not going to end hunger overnight, but this is a way to start making bold decisions.” Celebrities and chefs lending their names to the cause is a huge boon, but Bongiovi suggests one thing that we can all do every day. “The biggest thing people can do is realize that very few people choose to be food insecure. Most of the people we see are hardworking, underpaid folks with families that they love, just like everyone else.”

Charleston is so much more than moonlight and magnolias. It’s one of the oldest, most beautiful cities in the coastal South, where the past, as William Faulkner famously wrote, “is never dead. It’s not even past.” Visit the city’s culinary hotspots and you can taste it; tour its historic homes and museums and you can see it; get out on the water, and you can feel it. BY KINSEY GIDICK

hen the sunlight hits the coast in its special way and the salty sea air tickles your senses, you know you’re in coastal New England. With Boston as your base, it’s an easy drive south to Cape Cod or north to southern Maine, and both maintain their understated appeal with a mix of historic glamour, storied destinations, and glorious seaside scenery. If you’re looking to experience all the many aspects of coastal New England in one relatively compact area, Cape Cod is for you. For more rugged coastlines and wide swathes of space with a quieter scene, visit southern Maine. Either option makes a great long weekend for Bostonians looking for a seaside escape or visitors who want to extend their stay to sample that unique New England lifestyle.

CAPE COD

It’s about a two-hour drive from Boston south to Bourne, the entrance of Cape Cod. The legendary hook-shaped peninsula may only be 65 miles long, but with 15 different towns and villages (and more than 100 beaches), there is so much to explore. Shingled cottages and elaborate waterfront properties dazzling with beautiful hydrangeas dot the shoreline. The Atlantic side is wilder and windier, while the Nantucket Sound and Cape Cod Sound offer calmer, warmer waters.

A vibrant shopping hub, bustling Hyannis charms with penny candy stores and frequent live music in the Village Green. Beyond Spanky’s Clam Shack (a resident favorite), local artists display their work in colorful shanties that double as galleries. Heading east, Brewster’s mid-1800s seafaring legacy lives on today through the historic captains’ mansions and impressive estates that line Main Street. The 1700 First Parish Brewster Unitarian Universalist Church even has the names of famous sea captains on its pews. Elsewhere in town, visitors can travel back in time by visiting such heritage gems as The Brewster Store and Stony Brook Grist Mill, alongside numerous boutiques and antique stores. Chatham has it all: three centuries of history, endless outdoor options, a tony atmosphere, and an active commercial fishing pier. This iconic town is full of church steeples, museums, charming art galleries, and upscale stores. Photographers love the recurring fog surrounding Chatham Lighthouse (also an active U.S. Coast Guard Station), while nearby Lighthouse Beach is one of the area’s most popular stretches of sand. Don’t be fooled by the wooden shingles and buoys attached to Sesuit Harbor Café in Dennis — the family-owned restaurant serves some of the area’s best lobster rolls and raw bar options. The casual picnic table dining comes with a five-star view of Cape Cod Bay and the Dennis Marina. (Provincetown’s Lobster Pot Express is another excellent option for lobster rolls).

For a quieter setting, more remote Wellfleet and Truro feature old captains’ houses with weathered shingles that give way to the protected Cape Cod National Seashore. Even so, the area has excellent upscale dining options. In Truro, Blackfish serves elegant New American cuisine in a former blacksmith store. Wellfleet’s Ceraldi offers a multi-course dining experience with wine pairings and plant-based local ingredients. Provincetown, Cape Cod’s farthest point, is where the Pilgrims first landed in 1620. Today, exuberant “P-town” is known for its colorful

The redbrick seaside city of Portland is delightful in its own right, but the award-winning dining and impressive drinks scene make it the perfect mix of hip and historic. In Old Port, the cobblestone streets are lined by all kinds of boutiques, and 19th-century buildings give way to the wharf and active harbor brimming with restaurants. Watch the Casco Bay ferries and spot lobstermen bringing in their fresh catches from the outdoor deck of the original Luke’s Lobster Portland Pier. Founded in 1882, the Portland Museum is spread across three unique buildings: a Federal-style mansion from 1801; a Beaux Arts gallery from 1911; and a modern structure designed by I.M. Pei. Inside, you’ll find Warhols, Monets, Wyeths, Homers, and Hoppers, among others. To get a different view of Portland, venture out into the six unique islands of Casco Bay. Some are uninhabited, some offer fine dining, but all are scenic. Sail Portland Maine offers private sailing charters on the Eleanor Hawkes, leaving from Fore Points Marina.

Portland’s brewery and distillery scene is notoriously impressive for a city of its size. Some of Old Port’s best cocktails are at ViA VECCHiA, which opened mid-2020 in an ivy-covered building along a historic cobblestone street. There’s something in the sea air of “the Kennebunks” (Kennebunk and its neighboring town Kennebunkport) that draws people back repeatedly. These colorful towns boast beachside boutiques, art galleries, and a variety of restaurants. History buffs love to stroll down Summer Street and explore the historic captains’ mansions and seafaring past. For some serious people (and sunset) watching, try a signature gin and tonic on the deck of Batson River Tasting Room, where no expense was spared on the impressive interior design and customized house cocktails.

Tasting rooms are a bike ride away on the Inn’s “Wine Country Cruisers,” while other experiences include visits to the Inn’s Fess Parker Winery, which specializes in Rhône and Burgundian varietals, or dreamy horseback rides through the estate vineyard. Also tucked away in Santa Ynez Valley, and minutes from the charming Danish village of Solvang, is Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort. Set in 10,500 acres and with more than 50 miles of trails to discover, this luxury dude ranch is the perfect location for a romantic weekend or a family reunion. Guests enjoy exemplary California cuisine fused with the flavor of Western ranch cooking led by Chef Anthony Endy. Menus are complemented by an excellent local wine list together with the resort’s own red blend, crafted from locally sourced grapes. A highlight of the resort’s excellent horseback riding program is the Sip & Saddle experience, where riders of all levels saddle up for an adventure through canyons and hillsides to taste organic wine at the nearby Folded Hills Winery.

O

n the shoulder of the North Cascades Highway, where snowcapped, craggy peaks rise above dense stands of pine and arctic-blue glacial water, I stood and reflected, “It’s so good to be alive in a place that looks like this!” It was August, and my husband and I had spent the morning winding along one of the most breathtaking routes in the world, our speed metered by the only other car on the road, a 1969 Dodge Daytona, cruising just ahead of us. I snapped a photo, then climbed back into the passenger seat of our van, and we kept driving, up and over the alpine passes of northern Washington state, meandering toward home — some 2,600 miles away. That rush of joy and awe is one I’ve felt often: in the damp, green depths of the Quinault Rainforest, amid the sandstone spires of Bryce Canyon, in rhododendron-choked Appalachian hollers, and on Maine’s jagged, salty coast. Road trips — some over long weekends, others stretching for whole summers — have taken me to iconic spots and out-of-theway locales. For as long as I can remember, I’ve preferred a long drive to any other type of getaway. It’s a singular, timeless kind of travel, defined by the romance of the open road, the lure of freedom, and the promise of true adventure.

HIGHWAYS AND BYWAYS

There is perhaps nothing more quintessentially American than a road trip. The nation’s modern history and its culture have been shaped by the automobile since the turn of the 20th century, when inventors and drivers began pushing the “horseless carriage” to the limit. “The trails of Kit Carson and Boone and Crockett, and the rest of the early frontiersmen, stretch out before the adventurous automobilist,” wrote Colorado lawyer Philip Delany, an early road tripper, in a 1903 essay. “And when he is tired of the old, there are new paths to be made. He has no beaten track to follow, no schedule to meet, no other train to consider; but he can go with the speed of an express straight into the heart of an unknown land.” In the early years, America’s uncharted, unpaved expanse made road trips a dangerous proposition — man and machine against wild terrain. By the 1930s, Route 66, the “Mother Road,” was almost entirely paved between Chicago and Los Angeles. The country was open for exploration. By the middle of the 20th century, America had become the world’s largest automobile manufacturer. Three-quarters of all households owned a car, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, inspired by the roads he’d driven in Germany during the war, was championing a national highway system. It was the golden age of roadside attractions, diners, motels, and resorts. “There

There is perhaps nothing more quintessentially American than a road trip. The nation’s modern history and its culture have been shaped by the automobile since the turn of the 20th century was nowhere to go but everywhere,” as Jack Kerouac put it in his 1957 novel, On the Road. The growing national park system was flooded with families from cities and suburbs alike, and as the counterculture of the 1960s and 1970s grew, hippies traveled to festivals in caravans of converted vans and buses, turning the road trip into a lifestyle. As the century drew to a close, the convenience of increasingly affordable air travel meant the classic road trip fell out of vogue. Neglected, the highways aged, the motels moldered, and the neon signs flickered out.

ADVENTURE AROUND THE BEND

In recent years, new travelers have rekindled the romance of the road trip, and I count myself among them. In my early 20s, adventurous but close to broke, my two best friends and I drove a tiny rental car in a huge loop, from Salt Lake City to Denver, by way of Yellowstone. A year later, it was a trek through southern Utah and its “Mighty Five:” Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Arches, and Canyonlands National Parks. The road trip Renaissance really arrived in 2020, when the global pandemic grounded flights, closed borders, docked cruises, and rendered international travel nearly nonexistent.

ROAD TRIPS

Restless Americans packed their cars, rented and purchased record numbers of campers and RVs, and hit the road. A survey by the American Automobile Association found that more than 80% of people who intended to travel over the next year were planning road trips. Most were simply seeking safety: whether the route covers thousands of miles or just takes you from one city to the next, a road trip offers independence, insulating travelers from crowded spaces and large groups of people. Despite climbing vaccination rates and international destinations reopening to travelers, this year the road trip still reigns supreme. The pandemic’s lasting impact is a renewed appreciation for nature and the wonders that, for many Americans, lay in our figurative backyards, or just beyond.

Clockwise from above: Bixby Bridge on the Big Sur coast of California; the windswept beauty of Nevadaʼs Valley of Fire; stunning sunset at Point Lobos, Carmel

The incredible diversity of the American landscape — mountains, deserts, forests, swamps, beaches, and plains — means a lifetime of road trips might not be enough to truly see it all. That doesn’t mean we can’t try. My husband and I spent many months converting a Ford Transit van, and it’s been our beloved home on the road for many more. We’ve learned, of course, that some landscapes are unforgiving and unpredictable. Those early intrepid American road trippers anticipated breakdowns, detours, and disasters, and the modern traveler must expect the same.

FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA

In a campground along the Gulf Island National Seashore, just off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, we rode out an all-night thunderstorm and woke to floodwaters that half covered our wheels and came up to our knees. On a 100ºF day, an overheating transmission nearly stranded us in Slapout, Oklahoma, population: eight. On that Yellowstone road trip with my two girlfriends, a misread of the gas gauge left us running on fumes on a terrifyingly lonely stretch of Wyoming road. The misadventures and near catastrophes make for great stories. Recalling a trip to the staggeringly beautiful Royal Gorge is wrapped up with the memory of a miracle mechanic and a rear differential repair in Colorado Springs. A trip to the Blue Ridge Mountains to see a solar eclipse also included a few hours spent hopefully lost on North Carolina back roads. There have been flat tires and cold nights in camp. There have also been delightful discoveries made by taking “the long way:” spur-ofthe-moment swims in cool, clear rivers, encounters with wildlife, and hours spent singing along to the radio and just counting the miles. That’s the beauty of the American road trip — it will take you to astonishing places, but the true adventure is getting there.

FOUR GREAT ROAD TRIPS TO TRY

1

BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY, Virginia and North Carolina Stretching nearly 500 miles along the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains, there are few drives as spectacular or unique as the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s a leisurely drive from Virginia, at the southern end of Shenandoah National Park, to Cherokee, North Carolina, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Along the way, you’re likely to see deer, elk, black bears, and other animals, and take in stunning views of the best Appalachia’s got to offer.

Travel through popular, historically significant mountain towns such as Durango and Telluride, while the 25-mile stretch between Ouray and Silverton is known as Million Dollar Highway on account of its superlative views.

HANA HIGHWAY, Maui, Hawaii The crown jewel of beautiful drives on an island full of them, the Road to Hana is not for the faint of heart. With 600+ turns, 59 one-lane bridges, and countless blind spots over the course of 52 miles, it’s a drive that can easily take all day. But it’ll be a day well spent: the route features jawdropping waterfalls, black sand beaches, and a rainforest full of rare and colorful flora and fauna.

and worthwhile drives anywhere in the world. In the 500 miles between San Francisco and San Diego, the road hugs the California coast, offering incomparable views of the Pacific, and showing visitors the full range of what the Golden State has to offer. Skip from pioneer town to surf shack to vineyard, then get back on the road for what will feel like an endless adventure.

rom early-morning snuggles, to leafy fall walks, and lots of tail-wagging and cuddles in between, our pets play an important role in creating happy memories for our families. Travel, too, is about filling up that memory bank with both new and familiar experiences, so it’s only natural that many of us want these very important members of the family to join in the fun when vacation time comes along. Especially now, when we have just spent more time than we could have imagined with our loyal companions — it’s even harder to leave them at home! At Montage Palmetto Bluff in South Carolina’s Low Country, dogs are an integral part of the guest-welcoming experience. Two rescue dogs, Cauley and Magnolia, are the current representatives of the Bluffton property’s Canine Ambassador Program, which has been running since 2016. “It’s their role to mingle with guests every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — they take their job very seriously,” says the hotel’s Christine Wrobel.

Between swim sessions and nature hikes, there are plenty of opportunities for dogs to wear themselves out

The hotel is “an incredibly dog-friendly property,” and the high standard of care for four-legged guests begins pre-arrival. Staff note the pet’s name, breed, and birthday, and arrange services such as pet-sitting or an appointment at a local groomer. This attention continues with snacks strategically placed with shuttle drivers and in retail stores. “Our bellmen know the names of our repeat doggy guests,” says Wrobel. “Our team embraces them as part of the family.” With an incredible 20,000 acres to explore, your dog will be spoiled by scenic walking trails, exhilarating rides in golf carts, and even boat trips to the local sandbar. A selection of delicious treats awaits hungry mouths, including oat, banana, and peanut butter dog biscuits, while the Bluff’s ice-cream parlor Melt even serves “doggy ice cream,” so the whole family can enjoy a cooling treat together. Back in your luxurious dog-friendly accommodations in one of the hotel’s

elegant cottages or guesthouses, why not order in for your dog? The tempting “Best in Show” features ground Angus Beef with rice and mixed vegetables in three different portion sizes: Toy, Sporting, and Hound. “Dogs are really, really happy here,” notes Wrobel. “All are welcome, from Great Danes to Chihuahuas!” At Nemacolin in Western Pennsylvania, guests check their pets in to their very own stand-alone resort. “Nemacolin is a family-owned resort and the owners wanted to build facilities they would want to take advantage of when traveling. For them, their furry friends are part of the family,” says the resort’s Jennifer El Khessassi. Set within the 2,000-acre property, Nemacolin Wooflands Pet Resort & Spa offers a full spectrum of pet pampering from hydrotherapy and grooming, to trainers and veterinary services. Many guests choose to book a stay on the second weekend of October when the hotel pool literally “goes to the dogs” before it closes for the season. “Guests love to come and watch their dogs enjoying the pool, romping on the beach, and generally being spoiled,” says Kew. The hotel also prides itself on its work for the community. Fundamental to this is the hotel’s much-loved dog-fostering program. For the past five years, Inn by the Sea has worked with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland to foster animals on-site. The dogs are given a temporary home with 24-hour care, while staff and guests help with walks, playtime, and generally showering them with affection. “Our staff are so proud of the program,” says Kew. “The dogs are also therapy for them. Amenities include a cozy L.L. Bean blanket ready for your dog after a busy day exploring the property’s Great Pond Trail or one of the local beaches with pet-friendly hours. “Guests are very happy to find a luxury property that is so relaxed with pets,” says Kew.
