[ let’s face it, we could all use a little pick-me-up party, am I rignt? ] IT’S BEEN A LOOONG WINTER IN MY PART OF THE WORLD. SNOW CAME EARLY, IT STAYED AND, WELL, IT’S BEEN ENTIRELY TOO GREY AND COLD FOR MY LIKING FOR TOO LONG NOW. And just when we thought Spring might have finally sprung, we mourned along with much of the world for the victims of the senseless Boston Marathon bombing. Garnish is located just outside of Boston, and one of our Garnish team members, Catherine, lives right in the center of Boston. We were profoundly affected by this horrible tragedy, and dedicate this issue to the many men, women and children whose lives were lost or changed forever. Please, take this moment to hug your loved ones closer... we know we are.

Ready? Pull out your party dress. It’s time to show Old Man Winter the door! Let’s usher in Spring with a sparkling celebration of good friends, good food and good times.

IN THAT SPIRIT, THIS ISSUE OF GARNISH IS ALL ABOUT PUTTING ON THE GLITZ. You know we always say you don’t need a special occasion to celebrate life’s special moments. Sure, the ideas in this issue of Garnish would be great for a birthday party, or wedding shower or even a Mother’s Day brunch. But we think they’re just as well-suited to a “thank-goodness-we-don’t-have-to-wear-a-scarf-for-sixmore-months” kind of get together.

And if you can enjoy it while rocking a little glitz, all the better!

This issue is packed with décor ideas, menu inspiration, recipes, tips and printables. And if you’ve never met a glue gun you didn’t love, well... you’re going to adore this issue of Garnish. I hope you all have as much fun wading through the pages of this issue of Garnish as we did putting it together. I wish you all a Spring season filled with laughter, good friends and fantastic moments.

garnish + enjoy

Suzanne

(And if it’s coming up on winter where you live... well, turn the celebration into a “thank-goodness-it’s-finally-time-forcozy” kind of shindig.)

We get it, we really, really do. Life is crazy busy! And while you want to show your friends a good time, you’d prefer it to be a simple process. At Garnish we are all about easy. Here are some great tips to help you plan your spread without losing your cool.

clockwise, from top right 1. Set out small bags of almonds, mixed nuts, or heck, even Chex Mix, that your guests can pick up as they walk in the door. This stops them from knawing the doorknobs in hunger, which is a good thing! Up the glam factor by trimming your bags with a pattern stamp or scissors. And use some plain Elmer’s glue to add some glitter to the edges of a berry box. So simple. So sparkly! 2. This isn’t a sit-down affair, so make it easy for your guests to grab-n-gab. We popped a variety of edibles into our french fry scoops: grilled shrimp (you might be able to get these ready-made at your local deli), chips, and breadsticks and grapes. We took out our trusty glue gun and added a few black and white decorations to glam things up. 3. Nothing could be easier than a nocook dessert. Ice cream with espresso? Easy! Add some sparkle by dipping the bottoms of the plastic mini cups in glue, then glitter, and wrap your ladyfingers in a bit of waxed tissue paper, twine and black and white flowers from the craft shop. Oh-so-de-lovely, no?

tell perfect your antipasti plate me how [ we’re hungry just thinking about it! ]

They say variety is the spice of life and nothing exemplifies that like the antipasti plate. A little more than a simple cheese platter, but a lot less complicated than a full on meal, antipasti offers a taste of something for everyone. Here are our tips for putting it all together.

mix it up

old school charm

bite size bits

The secret to a successful antipasti plate is in the variety. Try three different kinds of cheese (one cow’s milk, one goat’s milk and one sheep’s milk). Add a few savory bites: some olives and some cured meats such as salamis and prosciuttos. And don’t forget some neutral bites. We added a bunch of grapes to our plate, but you could just as easily use berries or melon. Your guests will eat it all up!

We have a confession to make. We have a weakness for a good old-fashioned deviled egg. Oh so delicious! We couldn’t resist adding them to our antipasti plate (and we may have eaten more than our fair share). So don’t be afraid to kick it old school. Bring out the cocktail weiners. Add some pigs-in-ablanket. Serve up some pickled onions. That touch of nostalgia will make all those treats taste a little sweeter!

Antipasti literally means “before food.” You’re aiming to tempt your guests’ tastebuds with tiny bites rather than serve a four-course buffet-style meal. So keep it small. Cubes of cheese (we did skewers of bocconcini and grape tomatoes). Fruit that you can easily pop in your mouth. A handful of savory crackers or chips. A few grilled shrimp. Mini-desserts. Espresso instead of venti lattés. You get the picture.

Here’s a tip…Take your cheeses out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before you serve your antipasti. Most cheeses taste better at room temperature.

Here’s an idea... Ask your guests to tell you their favorite savory treat from childhood and add it to your antipasti plate. Your friends will be delighted!

Here’s a thought... Make it easy for your guests to serve themselves. Pre-skewer olives, cheese and meats so that your friends can graze and go.

Nº1

In case you haven’t guessed by now, we’re quite fond of shiny... and sparkly... and bubby. So we took full advantage of the opportunity to sip a champagne cocktail (or two) during our little get together. We also fixed our bar cart with the makings of several classic cocktails: gin & tonic, Tom Collins and a vodka gimlet. A quick Google search will yield hundreds of cocktail recipes. Here are two of our favourite champagne cocktails, both from Martha Stewart classic champagne cocktail (makes 1) • 3 drops bitters, 1 sugar cube, 1 oz Cognac, 4 oz chilled Champagne • Drop bitters onto sugar cube; let soak in. Place sugar cube in a Champagne flute. Add Cognac, and top with Champagne. kir royale (makes 6) • 3 oz (6 Tbsp) creme de cassis, 1 bottle Champagne or sparkling wine, strips tangerine or orange zest for garnish • Just before serving, pour 1 tablespoon creme de cassis into each glass. Fill with Champagne, and garnish with zest.

clockwise, from top 1. We couldn’t resist adding a little glitter to our cocktail picks. We just brushed a little glue on the ends, dipped them in gold glitter and voilà, now they’re oh-so-shiny! 2. Every drink tastes that much sweeter when it’s sipped through one of our adorable paper straws. We also dipped the edges of our champagne flutes in water, then a bit of sugar, to add to the glam factor.

how’d they do that?

take away made easy Glamorous does NOT have to mean stuffy. In fact, to us, glamorous means easy elegance, simple sophistication and lack of pretence. So it will come as no surprise that we kept our take-away options as simple as possible. We piled a stack of small bio-pak containers and a few Sharpies on the counter and encouraged our guests to help themselves to the leftovers. Easy

thinkgarnish.com

peasy can still be stylish! We also sent guests home with a little something bubbly. We packed mini bottles of sparkling wine (you could use Champagne or prosecco, too) and a paper straw in our berry box, nestled in some shredded paper and adorned with some gold glitter (see, we told you to bring your glue gun). They loved it!

We started with our small acetate box, packed it with black and white M&Ms, and inserted our event invite. Finally, we wrapped the whole thing up with a little spangle string (we found ours at a local craft shop). Isn’t it de-lovely?
