…from the editor Reaction to the EU Referendum continues and in this issue we have an opinion piece that puts the spotlight firmly on following through with actions after making promises – something that many people will be looking at closely over the next few months I guess. The item is about ‘playing by the rules’. Sadly it doesn’t happen all the time. We’ve seen plenty of examples in our industry of mis-selling over the years and although we don’t seem to have the ‘full on’ pressure selling gangs roaming around the marketplace that we saw some years ago, we still have examples of mis-information and ‘stretching the truth’.

Don’t be shy, why not get in touch...

Editor David N Russell Tel: 01536 710050 E-mail: info@thiis.co.uk

If we’ve learnt one thing from the referendum campaign, then it is that you really do have to be careful about what you say and how you say it! There are only a few weeks left until Trade Days opens the doors for the third year of the trade-only show. If you haven’t been yet, then why not make this your first visit – you’ll find it different to anything that you might have been to before.

Concession strategy success for online retailer Ability Superstore has been expanding its reach beyond the internet, with a network of highly successful department store concessions across the country. By 2011 the retailer was already supplying more than 12,000 product lines to a growing customer base at abilitysuperstore.com, making it one of the largest selections of healthcare and mobility aids in the UK. That autumn the company took the plunge and launched its first bricks and mortar concession at the flagship Boundary Mill Stores in Colne, Lancashire. Ability Superstore’s managing director, Julia Phipps, told us: “Just as we’d hoped, our product range proved to be a perfect fit with Boundary Mill Stores’ customer demographic and our first concession really flourished. On the back of that, we opened a further three outlets at the Boundary Mill Stores in Walsall, Newcastleupon-Tyne and Grantham, a few months later.” In the summer of 2012, Boundary Mill Stores opened a new store in Rotherham and Ability Superstore joined it from the outset. Since then, the Ability Superstore concessions have acquired new floor space and grown to carry more than 400 lines, including pill 8 www.thiis.co.uk

dispensers, wheelchair blankets, rollators, overbed tables, pedal exercisers, kitchen and dining aids, a wide range of bathroom accessories, magnifiers, dressing aids, insoles and shoehorns, and an extensive range of walking sticks. Julia added: “Our Boundary Mill Stores “Our Boundary Mill Stores experience has added a lucrative string to our experience has added a bow and allowed us to market our products lucrative string to our bow” to customers who prefer to shop offline. Now we’re rolling out the concessions model to a range of different, large-format department stores and garden centres, with plans for further expansion over the next 12 months.” Further details of the retailer’s network of retail concessions can be found at www. abilitysuperstore.com/index.php/page/retailconcessions

Recruitment Key questions you should be asking Recruiting is costly to any business in both time and resources. More so than ever in the current economic climate, the pressure is always on to get it right and it can be expensive if it goes wrong. Here, Emily Webb provides a few tips when you are looking to expand the team Our industry is unique; we work with people who are often at their most vulnerable so we need team members who can create trusting relationships, communicate well, act respectfully and inspire the customers they work with. When recruiting for a new or existing role, skills and experience are fairly straightforward to ask about and for the candidate to evidence. When it comes to finding out about character and values however… this can be more elusive. Here are some techniques and questions that can help you understand the candidate in front of you and help you find your next perfect team member. Assessing confidence and response to pressure. If the role includes responding to customer needs or working with tricky clients, then we need to check out how they operate under pressure. A well-used technique in the selection of Army Officers involves the candidate being given a case study consisting of a situation, resources and an incident to respond to. The candidate is asked to plan and present their response and answer questions from the panel. Usually one member of the panel will step up the pressure by asking additional questions that drill down in to the detail. The less confident will falter and may even seek reassurance when their decision (regardless of accuracy) is questioned. By using very little non-verbal feedback, this maintains the pressure, because the presence of feedback can be comforting. By resisting the urge to nod, smile, wince or gesture, you will be able to get the measure of their conviction. The candidates’ responses in this situation will demonstrate their confidence in their own abilities, their capability of thinking and acting calmly under pressure, and their communication and decision making skills. Outside the interview room Very simple but overlooked; pay attention to what candidates say before and after the interview. How did they treat your receptionist? How do they respond to other staff in the building? It’s these seemingly unobserved communications that can reveal the real gems amongst your applicants.

10 www.thiis.co.uk

Values, failures, and grudges Competency questions are a well-used technique and great for both sides of the table, allowing candidates to showcase their experience and the panel to listen and assess. Don’t be afraid however to ask questions that allow the candidate to talk about their character, values and beliefs. Ask about what is important to them, how their best friend would describe them and how their previous boss would describe them. A specialist recruitment advisor in the third sector advised a company I worked with to ask their candidates to tell them about a time when they failed at something, when they didn’t get on with a team mate and when they felt hard done by. These questions force the candidate to deviate from the usual rehearsed script and give you a real insight in to their character. Abstract Questions Oxford and Cambridge Universities get their pick of talent from the brainiest and brightest around the world and spaces are both very limited and coveted. To help find the best, their selection process includes interviews alongside outstanding academic achievement. Oxbridge interviews include abstract questions, including ‘Why is a cup called a cup?’, ‘Why do we read left to right?’ and even a very understated, ‘Go on, surprise me….’. Whilst these questioning techniques could be considered outlandish (and are for a place in an academic institution, not a business) you learn a lot about someone’s quick thinking response, creativity and confidence. Sense of humour A simple way of helping your candidates relax and show themselves in the best light. Notice the difference between nervous laughter and the candidates sense of humour. Someone’s sense of humour isn’t the be all and end all, nor does it impact their ability to do their job, but it can help assess their character and how they would fit amongst the existing team. I hope these ideas are helpful and contribute to an excellent person joining your team. Always check with your HR recruitment lawyer as recruitment law is complex and strict. Please let me know if you include any of the above in your recruitment process and which you found to be most effective or if you have any interview tips! Get in touch @EmilyHWebb

Retail opportunities with gyroscopic technology Nino Robotics has developed a gyroscopic powerchair that focuses on personal transportation through the self-balancing gyroscopic technology. The ‘Nino’ is the brain child of Frenchman Pierre Bardina, who after an accident that left him paraplegic, went on a mission to create a different kind of chair. The Nino is described as an ‘über-cool looking, motion sensitive powerchair, controlled by intuitive movements of the upper body’. The technology for Nino is based on the “steer and lean” principles made famous by Segway, the self-balancing personal transporter. Leaning forward directs the transporter forward and leaning backwards slows it down or brings it to a halt. Nino works in exactly the same way, a light push to the left or right on the handlebar allows the Nino to pivot on the spot. It seems that the first companies to realise the potential here in the UK were businesses already working with gyroscopic technology. The product first appeared at the Gadget Show this year and a licensing agreement followed between Nino-Robotics France and UK partner Kissimoto Ltd. Marketing director of Kissimoto, Sujith Sudhakar says that, as part of a soft launch, the product made an appearance at the recent Mobility Roadshow. “To evaluate interest and to give people a chance to test drive the Nino, we attended the Roadshow and received very positive feedback. Currently, the Nino is available at half the price and half the weight of other gyroscopic powerchairs. The market for the product is for people who have sufficient upper body strength to move forward and backwards.” Sujith added: “We see great business 16 www.thiis.co.uk

Nino can travel speeds of up to 20km/h and cover approximately 40km on a single charge. It is available in several colours from an ‘elegant wooden effect’ to a ‘cool lime green’. Manual handling product rights acquired BES has acquired the rights to what it describes as ‘the single best invention for safe manual handling of people – the Millie-Mova’. The Millie-Mova attaches to the base of any chair and has a spring mechanism that allows the carer to glide a chair from one place to another with an occupant, without risking possible injuries to their back, shoulder, knees, or hips while moving the person. According the BES, users love the Millie-Mova. Gavin Wright, Moving and Handling Consultant said: “I honestly cannot praise this item enough. I believe it to be the single best invention for assisting with the safe handling of people since the hoist.” Millie-Mova was designed by Henry Clayton, Director of Jenry Ltd to solve a problem he saw

in a nursing home. Henry was visiting his mother, and noticed that a carer was trying to push a resident in his chair up to a table. He then saw the carer put her hand to her back because of the strain. Barend ter Haar, Managing Director, BES Rehab Ltd said: “BES is delighted to have the rights to manufacture and distribute the Millie-Mova through our wider marketing and distribution channels. The Millie-Mova is so easy to use, that even a child can push a chair with an adult in it.” For more information, call 0845 1300 237. The website is at www.bescorporate.net

She told us: “The new design has been really successful so far we’ve sold over 5,000 in under six weeks.” The National Key Scheme was set up in 1981 in response to some disabled public toilets having to be locked to prevent damage and misuse. Key holders can use the toilets independently, and ensures that the facilities are in a clean, functional state and available when needed. Over 400 local authorities and thousands of businesses have joined the scheme and today there are over 9,000 locked disabled toilets in the UK. Unfortunately, there has been a lot of piracy, and these replica keys can damage the locks so the manufacturers needed to find a way to distinguish the genuine keys from the fake versions that are in circulation. The new design is difficult to copy and makes the key easy to turn and more comfortable to hold. The website for Blue Badge is at www.bluebadgecompany.co.uk

The Mobility Aids Centre in Peterborough has successfully transitioned to the new ISO 9001:2015 standard. The company passed its audit by NQA in May. Chris Reading, Director at Spedan Ltd, worked with the management team to ensure that the new system was practically and efficiently applied to the business. Jason Watling, Centre Manager said: “We found the process of transition to ISO9001:2015 very straightforward. As a forward looking, industry leading business, we were keen to demonstrate our commitment to a quality service by transitioning to the revised Standard as soon as possible. The new structure informs how we consider issues like risk and opportunities to sustainably grow our business.” The Mobility Aid Centre is just one of many clients that Spedan Ltd has helped with the transition to ISO 9001:2015. £1 million Chinese deal for Flexyfoot Flexyfoot has struck a major deal with a leading Chinese medical company. Launched in 2010 the company now and exports to over 25 countries. David Goodwin invented Flexyfoot after his sister struggled with standard NHS issue crutches when she was diagnosed with MS. The team have also re-worked the walking stick grip and shaft. The latest contract came after representatives of the giant Huadong Medical Corporation spotted the revolutionary-designed Flexyfoot range at an exhibition. David told us: “The contract is worth a minimum £1 million over the five years and will help us expand. British designed goods are held in high esteem in China and the Union Jack on a product is viewed as a mark of quality. They have a huge problem with an ageing population that needs walking aids. The Chinese middle class is aspirational, has a lot more disposable

income and want British products because they admire our innovation and style.” The move will see Flexyfoot products sold by the Huadong Medical Company, which has 6,200 employees and runs clinics, pharmacies and health shops across the nation. The company “British designed goods are reports that it has held in high esteem in China” also had a positive response from investors on the Seedrs crowdfunding platform who are keen to support its expansion moves across China and in Japan. Does advertising in THIIS work? Does advertising work in THIIS magazine. This is what Julian Cobbledick of Assistive Partner thinks… “We supply a range of software for healthcare. Since our company’s formation in 2007, Assistive Partner has grown consistently and profitably each year. Somehow, all of that growth has been driven by word of mouth and referral (with the odd successful tender thrown in). Like any expanding organisation though, to continue the momentum, there has inevitably come a time when we have had to invest in some limited promotional activity. Our first attempt has been very successful and has yielded an excellent return on investment. And it’s thanks to THIIS magazine. Our first series of three advertisements has resulted in a number of high quality leads and several

sales. So we have decided to extend the THIIS advertising campaign, try a few new offers in DealON! and generally embark on increasing our marketing efforts on several fronts. I can honestly say that our experience clearly shows that advertising to mobility retailers in THIIS gets results. Thank you.” Julian Cobbledick, Director, Assistive Partner

ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

Companion’s one-stop-shop for indemand accessible bathing solutions Clare Brophy co-founded Companion Stairlifts in 2003 to challenge the dominance of the major players in the market. She admits it was a gamble to take on the stairlift industry’s big names, but 13 years on Companion is now one of the major players – thanks to the team’s passion for what they do and a commitment to excellence in terms of its product portfolio and customer service. In 2009 Companion diversified from its core stairlift offer, introducing a bathing range in response to growing demand from the UK’s greying population for accessible showers, walkin baths and other bathroom accessories. Sales have been building steadily and last year was a record one for Companion, with the bathing range the company’s star performer thanks to a winning combination of the team’s exceptional customer service and its collaboration with specialist manufacturer AKW. “More people than ever before are considering adaptations to their home to make it possible for them to live there independently and safely for longer. We have seen a huge increase in demand for specialist accessible bathing solutions in particular and we’re working closely with our partners AKW to make sure we have the most advanced and stylish range and a professional project management service from initial enquiry right through to installation and after-care,” said Clare. Cliff Jones of AKW believes people are looking for more stylish products with the right balance between ease of use and contemporary finishes, but what makes Companion stand out is its ability to offer a friendly and hassle-free customer service, thanks to its extensive experience in the market. “The Companion team is first class when it comes to understanding an individual’s mobility challenges and recommending products which will make a difference and which will complement any bathroom style,” he explained. 36 www.thiis.co.uk

“We really value our relationship with Clare and her team and the insight they bring in terms of how the market is evolving. Their professional customer service perfectly complements our own approach to business and we’re delighted that the relationship is becoming increasingly successful.” One of the reasons for the success is AKW’s technically advanced product range, including the iCare shower which attracted lots of attention when it was launched in 2015 and is already Companion’s best“The iCare strikes the perfect selling electric shower. balance between a product “The iCare strikes the perfect balance which combines good looks between a product with functionality and it’s which combines good looks with functionality quick to install too” and it’s quick to install too,” said Cliff. Companion has a team of surveyors across the country and a dedicated bathing team at its Yorkshire contact centre. “We’re in great shape and looking forward to helping more people with their bathing challenges. We’ve got the right team in place and a fantastic partner in AKW, so we’re confident we can help independent mobility shops to grow their business if they trust us with their bathing enquiries,” said Clare. If you would like to share in Companion and AKW’s success and offer your customers a professional end-to-end service for their accessible bathing needs, please get in touch to discuss how we can work together. Please call 0800 0197797 or email enquiries@ companionstairlifts.co.uk.

‘Superhero’ suit gives hope to Scoliosis sufferers

Guide to assistive technology launched for the visually impaired

A recent study is helping British medical manufacturer, DM Orthotics, discover the clinical benefits of its pioneering new product and material, the Postural Scoliosis Suit. Developed for young people who suffer with scoliosis, the fabric ‘superhero’ suit helps patients avoid radical surgery whilst also freeing them from rigid bracing. Scoliosis is the abnormal twisting and curvature of the spine and affects around 42,000 young people in the UK, resulting in 3 to 4 children per 1,000 who require specialist supervision and support. The suit is designed with young children in mind, with details such as colours and even stitching being able to be chosen by the child themselves – and can comfortably be worn under school uniform. For the full story, search ‘DM Orthotics’ on AT Today

A new guide has been released by the Thomas Pocklington Trust on Assistive and Inclusive Home Technology for those facing the everyday challenges encountered from sight loss. The guide, created for those with visual impairment, as well as healthcare professionals and product designers, aims to inform readers of the different innovations available that can help those suffering from sight loss live more independently in the home. Covering both high and low tech products, the guide hopes to raise awareness of the multitude of different assistive technology available on the market, as well as inspiring product designers to design with accessibility being a key consideration. Coming to your senses...

ATtoday The new world of Assistive Technology

Hear… smell… remember As dementia progresses, it can become increasingly hard for carers to provide appropriate games or activities for people living with dementia, particularly in the later stages. To help address this issue, Active Minds decided to create Scentscape, a unique multi-sensory reminiscence activity designed especially for people with mid to late stage dementia that launches this July. The new product offers an alternative option to multi-sensory rooms in care homes which can potentially overstimulate older people, can be costly to install and requires patients being mobile enough to get to. Scentscape will be released as a series of kits incorporating themed sounds and smells designed to spark conversation, encourage relaxation and evoke pleasant memories. The company will focus on five different themes; At Home, The Tool Shed, In The Garden, At The Seaside and Trains. For the full story, search ‘Scentscape’ on AT Today

Opening ears with the Internet of Things Danish hearing specialists Oticon has revealed the world’s first ‘Internet of Things’ hearing aid, the Opn. The ground-breaking device is set to unleash a world of new possibilities for those with hearing impairment, with the device being capable of handling noisy environments and overcoming infamous ‘restaurant dilemma’. Additionally, the device features revolutionary BrainHearing technology, reducing cognitive load and improving both memory & understanding for the user. It is its Internet of Things connection that truly sets the hearing aid apart however, with the Opn being capable of interacting with a world of connected devices, including door bells, smoke detectors, baby alarms and much more. This potential to connect and engage with an endless range of interconnected devices is what Oticon believes will really change the lives of its users. Going is good for Handicare’s Elite Partners According to Handicare, the company’s Partner Programme continues to evolve and deliver on the promises it made when first launched back in February 2014. Handicare’s Marketing Manager, Sharron Cutler, told us: “We have always been very open about the fact that we viewed the programme as something that would develop. When we launched in 2014, we had wanted to do something that offered reward and recognition for our Trade Partners for some time but were mindful that whatever we did would need to be both sustainable and dynamic enough to support the business needs of our partners too.” Sales and Marketing Director Mike Bennett joined the team earlier this year. He added: “We

42 www.thiis.co.uk

are currently reviewing the programme to make sure that what we offer to Partners is of tangible benefit to them in growing their businesses. The aim is to build on the current benefits and existing activities such as our annual Partner Awards, which recognise Elite and Select Partner’s achievements, and our Elite Event which is about thanking our Elite partners for the support they have shown us during the year; I don’t foresee any reason to stop doing either while they are so well received.” This year’s event was at Ladies Evening at Chester races.

Focus

Ethics – in business and politics There’s a great deal of fall-out after the Referendum vote and here TPG DisableAids Alastair Gibbs talks about the importance of following through after making promises.

Money…money…money!! During the referendum, huge promises were made by Leave politicians, most famously about giving more funding to the NHS. We need to hold politicians to these promises. More support for the NHS means better treatment for us and our loved ones. It means more nurses, shorter waiting times, safer hospitals. But holding Leave campaigners to their promises isn’t just about funding the NHS, as critical as that is. It’s also about drawing a line in the sand about the importance of truth in our democracy. Some politicians have a bad habit of saying outlandish things to earn votes before an election, then hoping everyone forgets once the votes have been cast. Such dishonest practices warp democracy. They make it impossible for voters to make informed decisions, and erode all faith in leadership. In the run up to the referendum, we were promised that a vote to leave the EU wouldn’t only mean more funding for the NHS. We were also promised an end to VAT on gas and electricity, safeguarded funding for poorer parts of the UK, and no erosion of our rights at work. We’ll need to battle for these promises to be kept. It makes nonsense of democracy if these promises are not honoured in the same way that it would make nonsense of sales legislation if we could promise all sorts to close a sale, then not deliver what was promised. In life, as well as in business, it is up to us to “Do the right thing”. If my children read this piece they will recognise the saying. It has been a mantra of life in our family for generations. Do not promise what you cannot deliver and always try to deliver more than you promise. It seems to be working reasonably well for the 31 years of TPG DisableAids Ltd, maybe it could work well for a few politicians!! I often hear complaints about others in our marketplace not playing by the rules. But always

we should remember that lowering our own standards simply results in a downward spiral that will be lowered even further by the next competition to come along. As with the EU referendum sometimes we are all guilty of thinking that the biggest driver in any decision is money. Yet if we stop and evaluate our own experiences and think what is important to us, we often come up with a whole host of priorities that are usually more important. Quality, reliability, style, comfort, aftercare, etc. All have a value to our customers, so why would we compromise those qualities just to lower the price. Indeed with NHS and Local Authorities becoming a diminishing customer, we should be collectively enhancing the value of the product for the discerning private customers that are spending their own money. If the lowest possible cost were the only consideration there would be no premium quality offerings in any marketplace. It is down to the skill and the integrity of any assessor to identify the most important factors in any given customers situation and offer the best value solution, not the cheapest.

“Do not promise what you cannot deliver and always try to deliver more than you promise”

Hydrant creator awarded MBE Mark Moran, creator of the Hydrant Drinking System has been recognised for his services to innovation with an MBE. Mark developed the product following surgery on his back in 2005 when he noticed how difficult it was to get enough to drink, with the jug and glass by his bed either empty or impossible to reach, lift and hold. Most hospitals in the UK now use the product, which received the Queen’s Award for Innovation in 2013. Mark told us: “To receive that award was incredible, but to get the MBE really is something else. It’s recognition of what we have achieved and what I’ve been through over the past decade. I could have just carried on in a well-

Handicare’s Italian job A couple in the Italian village of Pasian di Prato, in Udine province around 130 km from Venice, have chosen the Handicare bespoke 2000 twin rail system when they needed to find a curved stairlift that was not only suitable for outdoor use but was compact enough not to cause an obstruction for the public using the pavement area at the base of the stairs too. According to the company, Handicare’s

bespoke 2000 twin rail system still offers the narrowest internal bend on the market which makes it ideal for enclosed areas where space is limited. Handicare says that, on average, the Handicare 2000 is despatched within a week of the drawing being signed off. To find out more visit www.handicare.co.uk

OT champions lumbar support in wheelchair designs in new article

Ailsa in the RKS showroom

Ailsa Reston, OT from RKS Occupational Therapy Services, has published a new article highlighting the importance of ergonomic backrests in wheelchairs such as the new TGA StrongBack. The article includes evidence to illustrate the benefits of better posture when sitting in a wheelchair for prolonged periods. Ailsa qualiďŹ ed as an OT in 1986 and is the co-director of RKS based in Chester with a showroom providing specialist provision of wheelchairs and seating. According to Ailsa, this front-line experience has given her proven knowledge regarding effective wheelchair design and the importance of appropriate lumbar support. In the article Ailsa introduces the key benefits of sitting in a supportive wheelchair. She says that through good posture and head, trunk and pelvic alignment, chronic discomfort and pain can be minimised along with the risk of more serious irreversible conditions. 52 www.thiis.co.uk

‘Brexit’ won’t slow Euro expansion for Stairlift outfit

One of Acorn’s French installers, Florian Vaure, with his FastTrack installation van.

According to Acorn Stairlifts, ‘Brexit’ or not, it’s business as usual for the fast-growing UK company which saw its turnover from mainland Europe hit a record £20.5 million last year. The figure was up by 37.5% on the previous year and the company is currently pressing ahead with the opening of a new office in France. In 2014/15, two-thirds of Acorn Stairlifts’ record sales of almost £150 million came from outside the UK, with almost 15% of that revenue generated in mainland Europe. The company has wholly-owned subsidiaries operating in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Ireland and France. The new French office will allow Acorn to focus much more on direct-to-consumer sales across France, where it has previously relied on leads generated through a network of distributors. Its ambitious plans for continued European expansion have been boosted by ‘Brexit’, with the resultant fall in the value of sterling against the Euro is making British-made goods more competitive on the Continent. Dave Belmont, Acorn Stairlifts company secretary, said: “We remain confident that the

referendum result won’t damage our strategy for continued expansion in Europe, of which the new French office is just the latest step.” The site for Acorn’s new French base is close to Calais for cross-Channel distribution and situated in one of Northern France’s main economic “We remain confident that hotspots. The new the referendum result won’t operation will be managed by Jacques damage our strategy” Konings, who said: “We are experiencing growing demand from the French public. Whatever happens with ‘Brexit’ I cannot believe it will undermine the basic rule of supply and demand, and the demand for Acorn Stairlifts is already here in France and growing fast.” Call 0800 073 9775 or visit www. acornstairlifts.co.uk

Not so lucky break leads to 25 years of success There are plenty of businesses that have been created after what could be described as a ‘lucky break’, but here’s a story of how a new enterprise that has gone on to become the supplier of choice for over 300 customers got started after a break of a different kind. Jo Bonser has been with Health Care Services in Nottingham for 25 years and joined just a year or so after the company was launched. Jo told us how it all came about. “In 1989 Michael Bonser was running a driving school with his business partner. He was a keen footballer and he broke his ankle and so he was stuck in the office for a while. Someone approached him to ask whether he would be interested in starting a baby nappy delivery service with Silvercross. He looked at the franchise agreement, which was about as thick as Yellow Pages and decided that he didn’t need that, but he liked the idea of doing something new and so they decided to give it a go.” Jo explained that this was before the handy carry home packs of nappies were available and so it wasn’t that easy to buy in bulk and get them home. “Michael bought a van, went to the Cash & Carry, bought a load of nappies and started to promote a door to door delivery service in the local area which went really well. As the customers got to know him, they started asking for other products such as baby wipes, cotton wool and baby shampoo and so the range just grew.” However, it was a call from a local Nursing Home that really started to get the business on the track that it has followed for over a quarter of a century. “The caller said that they had heard that Michael supplied baby nappies and wondered whether he could get an adult range. Michael said that he was sure that he could, but he knew nothing about incontinence products at the time. He contacted a supplier, went on a training course for a day, brought in the product and supplied it to the Home and then wondered whether there were other Homes that would also be interested. It turned out that there was only one other company supplying the products in the area and so the new service gave customers a choice. It seems that our delivery service was a

bit quicker and so that’s really how the business started.” According to Jo, the same thing happened regarding building the range. “Customers started asking whether Michael could supply other products and so wipes, aprons, gloves and all sorts of other items were added and that’s how the business has grown. We now supply 1000’s of items and we sell anything from a disposable glove to a profiling bed. We’ve been keen to develop a range which means a customer doesn’t have to shop anywhere else. Our focus has always been to supply what the customer is asking for and we have never been frightened to add products to the range. In fact we believe that we are “It turned out that there was one of the most only one other company active companies around when it comes supplying the products in the to taking on new area and so the new service products. We listen to the customers and gave customers a choice” react to what they are looking for.” A good example of that is a product range that the company is the exclusive distributor for in the UK. It’s a range of food moulds to improve the appearance of pureed meals. “A couple of customers started asking for them and we sourced them from Australia eventually and now we sell them to care homes all over the UK.” The business was running for 18 months or so before Jo got involved. Her background was in sales. “I was trained ‘American style’ by Budget Rent a Car.” The business doesn’t have a huge number of people employed, but as Jo says, they never really wanted to be huge. “I think we are quite niche and we are about relationships, not sell it cheap and stack it high. We are more about good advice, good quality and innovation. I

would think that 80% of our business is done locally as we are able to provide that personal response. We do have contacts up and down the country and we have a flagship customer on Harley Street too, which we have been trading with since 2006.” The business is up against some very large companies but Jo is confident that it can compete. “Our customers do have options to buy from national companies. I would say that we are competing due to our quality and service, competitive pricing and added value. When you are dealing with some of the very large companies, you aren’t an individual, simply an account number. People still appreciate that we provide accountability and traceability and they trust us. We very rarely get complaints, but when we do we treat them very seriously and work very hard to make sure we end up with a happy customer. Complaints can actually be good for a business as they highlight areas that you need to get better at, but it’s really all about how you handle them when you get them.” There is a small retail showroom too for mobility and homecare products. “People kept on knocking on our door asking whether we could supply the products to the general public and so it made sense. We do a fair amount on the servicing side too, both with the public and in the homes with LOLA testing.” Jo tells us that the marketplace can be a bit challenging. “It’s very tight when it comes to pricing. People are looking very closely at their spend, particularly with the Living Wage coming in next year, I think that is going to have an impact. I think that the Four Seasons Group have said that they believe it will cost them £40 million over the next five years after it is introduced.” “Our philosophy is very much to educate people to buy wisely” Jo says. “We are very passionate about quality and our message is that you get what you pay for. It’s not an easy message to get across but we try to bridge the gap between the business owners and the people who work on the floor. We try to get them to understand that, when they are buying cheap, they are buying twice.”

The business has been built through listening to what customers want

A good example, Jo says, would be of one of the biggest areas spent in care homes, gloves. “We hear all the time that the proprietors are buying cheap gloves, which they have never tried and that they are ripping when the care workers put them on and so they are wearing two pairs every time – they are double gloving and so the message there is very clear. We buy from the reputable suppliers we have used for many years and we don’t tend to chop and change and so the customer will get consistent quality from us while some other companies might spot buy to save a penny here and there, but then the customer gets different quality products at different times. That’s why we appeal maybe to the mid to high end of the marketplace, which we are happy about.” Jo says that she is very hands on in the business. “We think it’s important. For example, I look after the top 20 customers in the business. That’s something that I was taught many years ago – don’t let anyone but yourself look after the top customers “People still appreciate that as they won’t get the we provide accountability and level of service that you will provide them traceability and they trust us” with.” At the beginning, she was even more hands on. “When I first started I used to go out to the customers, sell them the products, come back to the warehouse, put my jeans on, load the van and then go out and deliver the products that I had just sold. The customers thought that was great.” Jo is very positive about the future, but believes the company will have even more of a ‘specialist tag’ in years to come. “I think that we will become more specialist in our field because of our interest in developing our skills and understanding all the legislation and changes that are happening in the industry.” To get in touch with Jo, call 01773 713713. round up #BathingIsBetter campaign launches

Footy donation from R82 R82 UK has supported The Frame Football Association with a series of walking frame donations so more young disabled players can enjoy the beautiful game. Frame Football is a new activity in the UK set up by amateur football coach, Richard Seedhouse based in Coventry. Many Frame Football players use crutches to assist their mobility but utilise a wheeled walking frame to support them when they play. R82 is gifting eight Crocodile Walkers to young players in the coming months. Jon Preater, R82 Managing Director, handed over the first Crocodile Walking Aid to Fin Jones during a Saturday morning training session.

Abacus Healthcare has launched a communication programme to educate healthcare professionals, families and disabled bathers about the benefits of accessible bathing versus adapted showering. Social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook will provide key platforms for discussion regarding the subject with a view to all participants including ‘#BathingIsBetter’ in their comments and posts. The company says that, despite a bathing culture in the UK, many Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) approvals and professional recommendations are tending towards bathroom showering adaptations instead of new hi-lo baths.
