The Classic

THE ULTIMATE FOOD GUIDE TO THHS This month The Classic Magazine is trying out a different format by focusing all our content around one topic: the food options near THHS. For this month’s edition of The Classic Magazine, we decided to create a food guide. This is like nothing we have done before; we decided to dedicate an entire issue to one of the most-discussed topics in our daily lives. It is impossible to go through the day without seeing food everywhere, be it takeout, bagged lunch, or simply hearing an argument over which local eatery is the best. So we have put together what we think is essential to getting through Townsend Harris, at least on the food side of things. So whether you’re trying to save money by making food at home, looking for snack ideas to keep in your locker, staying healthy, or eating out, this issue is all you need. The different sections in this magazines are designed to be ref-

The Classic is an open forum for the expression of student views. The opinions expressed therein should not be taken to represent those of the administration or faculty, or of the student body as a whole.

erences that anyone can use, from recipes to locations of nearby restaurants, there’s something for everyone’s culinary needs. The hope is that you can keep this magazine, or download the online version of it, and use it for reference in the future. You may be a freshman who can’t believe that anyone has the time to order food for lunch during school hours. Wait until you’re a senior and then look at this guide to see everything that’s available for you. At the same time, you might be a senior who simply can’t understand how some people can order out every day for lunch without being bankrupt within a week. If that’s the case, check out our suggestions for lunch on the cheap. Whatever your preferences, we hope

this guide has something for you. Disclaimer: In the past three years, Gino’s of Kissena, Tozt Cafe, Naomi’s Kosher Pizza, and Phil and Sons Pizza have each advertised with The Classic. We have ensure that those writing for the opinionated components of this issue worked separately from those who worked on the advertising side of the paper. Nonetheless, we should make it clear that the views and opinions expressed in this issue are based on opinions of individual members of the class who wrote each specific section of the guide. The restaurants we wrote about did not compensate us for mentioning them in our articles, nor did they compensate us for mentioning them positively in our articles.

FIVE DOLLAR

Sponsored by Kweller Prep

BUYS

It’s one thing to know what food options are available to you. Affording everything is entirely different. Each of us took $5 into the area around THHS and tried to see what we could buy for lunch. Here are the best buys we found.

GINO’S

For a quick meal near school, pizza is the way to go. Gino’s has been serving hungry Townsend kids for years, so you can’t go wrong. Five dollars will buy you a penne alla vodka slice and four garlic knots. LOCATION: 65-01 Kissena Boulevard, Flushing Photo and text by Woo Jung Yi

DAD Deli & Cafe

This deli is about a 10-15 minute walk from school. Boar’s Head meat on most kinds of bread is $3.25 and costs $.75 more for lettuce and tomato. LOCATION: 59-24 Kissena Boulevard, Flushing Photo and text by Emma Noblesala

T&T RESTAURANT

This restaurant offers a generous serving size at a low cost. You can get ten steamed pork buns for $3 and a pint of dry noodles with peanut sauce for $2. This restaurant is affordable and has a variety of noodles, soups and stews for the craving student. LOCATION: 46-11 Kissena Blvd, Flushing Photo and text by Stephanie Geier

Panda Garden Tex Mex THE MEAL: Soft tortilla with choice of black beans or pinto beans and cheese; pint of yellow mexican rice with salsa; drink THE MONEY: Photo and Text by Mehr Kaur $5.00 THE VERDICT: Though it’s a great bang for your buck, the quality of the food isn’t all that great. The rice was a bit flavorless, and the tortilla was a little too soggy for my liking. However, the salsa made up for the flavorless rice, and the beans masked the taste of the soggy tortilla for the most part. Although I wasn’t thrilled with my meal, there is no complaining when you can get this quantity of food for the price of only five dollars. THE LOCATION: -49 Austin Street, Forest Hills

Subway THE MEAL: A Six-inch sub way ham or meatballs. Comes with choice of toppings, two cookies or chips, and a medium drink. THE MONEY: Photo and Text by Nicole Barros $4.90 THE VERDICT: This filling meal is perfect for an afterschool bite to eat. Though the price depends on the deals of the month, there’s usuall something like this for just at or above five dollars. THE LOCATION: 59-16 Kissena Blvd, Flushing

Soy Sauce, Glatt Kosher Chinese Takeout THE MEAL: Chicken soup with rice, egg roll, and free fortune cookies THE MONEY: $4.84 Photo and Text by Rebecca Shi THE VERDICT: I ordered two things, the egg roll and chicken soup with rice. The egg roll was crunchy and a little oily, but bursting with flavor. The soup was warm and delicious, perfect for any cold day. Be warned though, there’s nowhere to sit, so you’ll have to take it and go. Overall, the food was somewhat expensive, but the location can’t be beat. THE LOCATION: 68-22 Main St., Flushing

Science Building Café THE MEAL: Flatbread pizza with a topping, bottle of water. THE MONEY: $4.84 THE VERDICT: A considerable size of flatbread pizza with a topping of your choice can be purchased at the Science Building Café located on the Queens Colleges campus. Priced at $3.80, the tangy and cheesy pizza is great for a quick eat after school or in between classes. The proximity and convenience of the café offers students a myriad of food options. Despite the excess oil and cheesy goodness which would be a killer to your calorie levels, the savory taste is worth the extra mile. THE LOCATION: Queens College Science Building (Second Floor) OTHER OPTIONS You can get a burger at Tost for less than $5. You can get a number of snacks from Seasons Grocery on Main Street. There’s the kids meal options at Qdoba on 188th Street. The Colombian cart offers two empanads and Colombian coffee for exactly $5.

The

Hungry Games May the Odds be ever in your Flavor

By Stephanie Geier, Jason Lalljee, Zac Ooi, Jennifer Walsh It’s the ultimate battle of wills. Students gather round, prepared to fight for their side. Where should they go get some food? We decided to settle these highly controversial debates once and for all. The restaurants received grades based on quality of food, service, and price.

GINO’S VS. TOST

THE RATIONALE: Gino’s of Kissena and Tost Cafe are the most popular spots for Harrisites to order food. Both are fairly close to the school and offer a variety of dishes, with Tost specializing in sandwiches and Gino’s focusing on pizza and Italian food.

Tost Tost’s variety is impressive; it has snack options such as fries and nachos, full meal selections like burgers and paninis, and a variety of drinks and desserts. However, the quality of this food was the ultimate tiebreaker and tipped the scales in Gino’s favor. The food is reasonably priced, but the quality is subpar; the coffee is on the watery side, the pasta is slightly bland, and the fries are standard.

Winner

gino’s

gino’s Gino’s is closer, has better quality food, and has reasonable prices for their food. While Tozt’s portions aren’t unreasonable for the price, Gino’s has the best blend of these important qualities. Gino’s food is more substantial than snacks from Tozt, and these dishes are more filling -- perfect for students looking to fuel up after a long day.

BATTLE OF THE HALAL FOOD CARTS

THE RATIONALE: As the only two halal carts within close proximity to the school, it’s inevitable that these two food trucks face off against one another. Both offer the standard meat and rice options, but only one can be victorious.

Shah’s Halal food With a close location to school, Shah’s is a place to satisfy cravings. At a price of $6, any platter comes with a free soda. This food cart provides options like platters, sandwiches and falafels. The portion size is reasonable and enough to fill a hungry student. Shah’s owner gives generous amounts of meat, salad and sauce. It’s good quality, but it just doesn’t quite reach the restaurant-quality level of Ali Baba’s

Winner

Ali Baba’s

Ali Baba’s On Horace Harding, near the Q17, Q22, and Q88 stops lies a superior halal food eatery; it maintains the accessibility and informal qualities of the best food vendors, but Ali Baba’s offers quality you’d find at a formal restaurant in Richmond Hill, especially with their lamb/chicken sampler. As filling and savory as comfort food, the cart’s worth an extra buck compared to the light portion sizes and unsatisfying nature of surrounding food favorites.

More VS. Match Ups By

BEST BURGER

BEST BUBBLE TEA

Five Guys Burgers vs. Bareburger WINNER: BAREBURGER Despite the cheaper prices and free peanuts, the overall quality of the burgers found at the chain Five Guys Burgers is inferior to those found at Bareburger. The burgers found at FGB are oily and often make the bun soggy. The burgers found at Bareburger are organic and all-natural, and can be personalized in more than just toppings. Not only can you pick toppings, but you can pick the kind of meat and bun being used. Despite the slightly higher prices, Bareburger is the way to go. Location: 71-49 Austin Street, Forest Hills

Quickly vs Kung Fu Tea WINNER: QUICKLY The controversy over the best-tasting bubble tea in Flushing is endless. But with the 50-cent student discount and two free toppings, Quickly becomes the superior choice. Quickly offers the standard bubble tea for a more affordable price. And taste-wise, Kung Fu Tea is far too sweet. For us, Kung Fu Tea just can’t handle the challenge in the battle of bubble tea. Yes, numerous Quicklys have shut down recently due to competition, but it’s still our go-to place for tea in Flushing . Location: 136-49 Roosevelt Avenue, Flushing

BEST MEXICAN GRILL

BEST COFFEE

Chipotle vs. Qdoba WINNER: CHIPOTLE “Should I get a burrito, or a bowl?” This is the question on everyone’s mind when it comes to picking their Mexican food. While Qdoba, Chipotle’s less satisfying rival, may entice you with their free guacamole and queso sauce, the quality of their tortillas and guacamole doesn’t compare. Their chicken also lacks the zest that Chipotle’s has. Chipotle also has a “secret menu” with items such as the Quesarito and Nacho dish, leaving you with endless ways to satisfy your Mexican food cravings. Location: 70-30 Austin St, Forest Hills, or 90-15 Queens Blvd (Queens Center Mall)

BEST SUSHI

Sushi Tokyo vs. Sushi Time (Forest Hills) WINNER: SUSHI TIME This sushi is so fresh, it’s as if the Itamae at this sushi joint catches his fish each day with his own bare hands. The small sushi shop known as Sushi Time in Forest Hills, is known for its fresh yet affordable sushi by their extremely loyal customers. Although there are plenty of other competing sushi places out there, there is one that has hit extremely close to home, Sushi Tokyo on Main Street. Sushi Tokyo seems to be a new sushi joint that is ready to hit the Flushing streets but if you want a reliable, cheap, and tasty sushi spot stick to Sushi Time. Trust us, with Such Time, you can never go wrong. Location: 7242 Austin St, Flushing, NY 11375

Starbucks vs. Dunkin’ Donuts WINNER: DUNKIN’ DONUTS We’re usually very loyal to our local baristas. However, we’re also huge fans of fraps, most of which are not offered at the science building at Queens College. At Townsend Harris the clear winner between the question: Dunkin’ vs. Starbucks is Dunkin’ Donuts. We would rather walk the extra few blocks for good coffee than wait on a long line for sub par coffee and an incomplete menu. Sure it’s nice to have Starbucks available on the QC campus, but it just can’t offer what a full Dunkin’ Donuts has to offer. For a few extra dollars, be a hero to your friends and bring back some donuts to share. Location: 153-67 Horace Harding Expressway

BEST FROZEN YOGURT

Red Mango vs. Vanilla Sky WINNER: VANILLA SKY Vanilla Sky has a variety of flavors of frozen yogurt compared to the relatively smaller choice of flavors at Red Mango. They have fro-yo flavors ranging from vanilla to cheesecake to cookies and cream and more. At Vanilla Sky, you get to dispense the fro-yo yourself and make your own creation, as opposed to some Red Mangos that have the employees create it for you. You pay based on the weight of your creation at Vanilla Sky, and while some Red Mangos do the same, others make you pay based on cup size and the amount of toppings. The differences might be small, but they add up. Location: 70-35 Austin St., Forest Hills, NY 11375

DIY TOWNSEND : THE ART OF THE 15-MINUTE MEAL

IN a place like Townsend Harris teeming with busy students, working on their collaterals late into the night or quickly running to the bus in the morning, it is no wonder that time for eating is limited. Cooking a meal is often relegated to the bottom of the list compared to other student-related priorities. But with these quick and easy “do-ityourself” recipes for any time of the day, you can take a nutritious break and your own meal, in less than 15 minutes.

TIPS & TRICKS FOR THE KITCHEN

• • • • • • • •

Smash a clove of garlic with the flat of your knife to peel it easily. When baking, really stick to the recipe! It makes everything taste better because baking is a science. Cooking is an art - make sure you taste your food as you go, and substitute ingredients that you prefer rather than what the recipe may call for. Cook pasta 1 minute less than the package instructions and cook it the rest of the way in the pan with sauce. For rich, creamy dressings made healthy, substitute half the mayo with Greek-style yogurt. Invest in a bottle of high-quality olive oil. Just a small drizzle can really bring out the flavor of pizza, mozzarella, pasta, fish and meat. Do not use oil in the water when boiling pasta: It will keep the sauce from sticking to the cooked pasta Shoes off, music on, favorite beverage in hand — enjoy your time in the kitchen!

DIY BREAKFAST BREAKFAST, often deemed the

most important meal of the day, tends to be the one that is most skipped by high school students. The combination of waking up early, after having gone to bed late, combined with last minute test and homework cramming in the morning results in breakfast being pushed aside. However, these Greek Yogurt Pops are both tasty and can be prepared in just five minutes. The dish is also filled with antioxidants, amino acids, and essential fatty acids that are sure to start your day off right.

GREEK YOGURT POPS FIVE MINUTES

by Stanley Harcharan, Mehr Kaur, Angelika Narewski, Catherine Ng, Dimitri Perdik, and Daniel Szewczyk It’s important to keep healthy eating options in mind. Here are some ingredients (and a recipe) you can incorporate into your lunch planning that have lots of flavor and lots of benefits.

Dark Chocolate

Edamame

Too much chocolate isn’t good for your health; however, a moderation of dark chocolate has proven health benefits. Each bite has a powerful source of antioxidants that actually helps reduce the risk of diabetes by boosting insulin sensitivity. It also helps in reducing high blood pressure.

Commonly known as an appetizer at your typical Japanese restaurant, edamame is a soy snack that is sure to up the protein, fiber, and vitamin/mineral content of your diet. Small portions of this protein-packed snack can provide tons of fiber, iron, and just enough carbohydrates.

Almond Butter

Hummus

For those who choose not to eat dairy products or have peanut allergies, almond butter is a tasty alternative. High in protein, almond butter can be used with a variety of fruits and vegetables. Similar to peanut butter, almond butter has about 100 calories per tablespoon.

This savory dip is a great alternative to unhealthy spreads such as ranch and blue cheese. There’s a flavor for everyone, whether you like plain hummus or enjoy a hint of other spices. Made with chick peas, this snack is full of protein and iron that each help you get through the day without craving other foods.

Recipe: Healthier Grilled Chicken Salad - Mixed greens - Vegetable oil - Freshly sliced tomato - 2 grilled chicken breast - Sliced white onions - 1/2 tbs of black pepper - 12 grain whole-wheat bread - Celery - Low-fat mayonnaise - Squeezed lemon juice
