a word from LCG... ALBUM I love this time of year, when the weather is still mild, Sundays are for football, and you’re trading those open toed shoes in for boots. NFL teams are battling it out for bragging rights, and to make it to the “Big Game” aka Superbowl, which equates to more money in their paychecks! Football season generally evokes some sort of pride and camaraderie. Although some people take it too far, Americans love football. For me personally, I have lived my entire life with the Pittsburgh Steelers games on every Sunday. Did I mention that we have 6 Superbowls under our belt and a great young coach Mike Tomlin?! I guess that’s reason enough to be considered the Greatest franchise of all time. There I said it, (and it’s reality, not fiction) but with that said, there is no need to debate me or try to get your point across, I am not changing my mind, Black and Gold for life! In the Fall, Sundays also bring thoughts of preparing a meal for the week and soup is a wonderful Fall treat. The aroma of a simmering hearty soup and the comforting feeling that you get while eating it, is welcomed on a chilly day. On page 8, you will find a great recipe that I enjoyed growing up and still do today! There is no denying the holidays are near. If you are like me, you may want to get a jump start on your shopping because fighting people for parking spaces and merchandise is something that I do not enjoy. You can use your fingers to do the buying, but I like to look at things up close and personal. Thinking of new gifts each year to get my family and friends is always exciting. I feel that gift giving is a representation of you and that added personalized touch goes a long way! On page 11, take a look at some of my suggestions for the man or woman in your life. The Write Track may have a heavy emphasis on food and music, but awareness is number one in my book, that is why I highlighted a Breast Cancer survivor this month, and please go see Waiting for Superman in theaters now. Very eye-opening. I am going to end with this saying that I read recently from NBC anchorman, Brian Williams, “If you want to give God a good laugh, make a plan.” Meaning, we are not in control of our lives, no matter how hard we try!

chatting with Donell Jones Donell Jones hit the music scene at a time when there was a lot of competition, but has managed to remain a consistent face in r&b since his debut album in 1996. Welldressed with a Chicago swagger, a conversation with him is like talking to an old friend. Confident, but not arrogant; maybe some of these new artists should take some pointers from him! As he releases his 6th album, Lyrics, we caught up with him recently in Atlanta. Congratulations on your latest album. You have been around for at least a decade and have multiple albums. What sets Lyrics apart from the others? This is my first album on my own label. Not only that, musically and lyrically I have grown so much as a person. When I put out those other albums I was young; now I am 37 years old and I just look at life so differently. I am more mature, to me it’s not that much different. I really won’t change my style but you can hear the growth. Where did you record Lyrics? I recorded at my home here in Atlanta. Is there an album tour planned? Yes we are going on tour. Got some dates in NYC and here in ATL. I am trying to go to all the states as well as overseas. Make sure you check me out on facebook and twitter to find out where I am at. Your music is filled with love, relationships and sexuality. Is there a special someone in your life? I do have someone special in my life. For many years I was a heartbreaker and it took me to become mature to understand that it’s ok to love one woman. Is marriage a consideration at this time? It definitely is, but I think I am afraid of marriage at this time. What are you scared of ? I don’t know, but I am into one woman! Why did you choose Yung Joc as a feature for the album? We chose each other to be honest, on the song “strip club”. I saw him at this show we had in Augusta, Georgia and he lives in my subdivision too. So we always pass each other, see each other, so one day he pulled up in my driveway and was like “yo D I wanna holla at you for a minute”. I happened to have my album with me and I played a couple of songs for him and he was like “ yo man, gimme that song right there; I’m go get on it right now and I’m send it back to you”. It happened just like that.

A Reel Good Time “There is no one coming with enough power to save us” is one of the opening lines of Davis Guggenheim’s new documentary Waiting for Superman. A look into the United States public school system, especially the inner city, brings light to a harsh reality (we are failing our children). The job of reforming our school system is bigger than one person but there our individuals out there like Michelle Rhee, former Chancellor of DC public schools that is trying to do her part, but of course she has run into opposition the entire way. Since this documentary was taped, the Mayor of DC was let go and Rhee was forced to step down due to her controversial approaches. DC’s numbers are the most startling. How is it that the school system of our nations capital ranks the lowest in reading scores in the entire country? When U.S. employers must recruit outside of the U.S. to fill jobs because there are not enough qualified applicants, you know there is a serious problem. Not wanting to give away the entire story line, please go support the movie and see what changes you can make in your community. What’s almost as unfortunate as this reality is that Americans with the resources to send their children to better schools just close their eyes and don’t do anything to address a larger issue. Even the producer admitted that he drives past a public school everyday to take his children to private school. Unions and what is known as a lottery system stops children from receiving better education daily. How about instead of the mindless entertainment that we are consuming, lets face our educational system head on. A special Thanks to people like Michael Baisden who is spreading the word to get more people in the theaters.

pLEASE...PLEASE...REVIEW THIS ALBUM BLU TRANSITION

AIRTIGHT’S REVENGE Rewind back to 2001 when a young Philadelphia born Bilal Sayeed Oliver released First Born Second, his ravishing debut album. At a time when Musiq was getting all the attention for his Philadelphia inspired record, underground hip hop fans and soul lovers understood what a masterpiece, Bilal had on his hands. Guest appearing on everyones album for almost a decade, fans finally get to experience his own copy, Airtights Revenge. As a lover and long time supporter of the boisterous over the top bizarre artist, I am disappointed with the results. Free flowing and what can be considered as an interpretation of his live show, the album begins with “Cake and Eat it Too”, what you would expect from a song with that title. Erase away the thought of a hip hop album, this project is a combination of electronic sounds and interesting beats. The mixtape that he put out in 08 was no indicator of what was to come, and the shelved Internet leaked, Love For Sale that was to serve as his second album, only left behind soul laced songs such as “High and Dry” and “Something to Hold on to” floating around the internet, that he joked about during a live show. Album recommendations are “Robots” and “Move On” both of which you have to wait until mid CD to sample. Bilal, older and hopefully wiser, this album comes across less aggressive. A song dedicated to his children called “Little One” is heartfelt and “The Dollar” reminds you of a track that could have gone on the Dead Presidents soundtrack. With no lead singles that fans can embrace like “Soul Sista”. It may be an album that needs to grow on you.

It’s hard to believe that in 8 years Conya Doss has released 5 albums without backing from a major record label. Still a reminder of what great talent has hailed from Cleveland, fans have wondered what it will take for her to reach mainstream visibility. What makes her so appealing besides that incredible voice is her ability to draw components from and transport fans back to the music of earlier decades which doesn’t compare to style of the 21st century. Blu Transition reflects her growth as a woman, both from a relationship standpoint and her transition into motherhood. Blessed with a son named Blu, how fitting of a title. Once again holding her own you will not find any collaborations on this album. “All in You” exudes that same feel good element, as her 2005 smash “Just Because”, her maturity unfolds on “Change Me” and the sassy “Your Not Ready” almost evokes thoughts of an anthem that Destiny Child would be reverberating. Doss has outdone herself with Blu Transition and in order to get her to the next level, we all need to support!

AUTHENTICITY Nicolay and Phonte, aka The Foreign Exchange have a lot to live up to with the name of their new record being Authenticity. Adding another soul release to their repertoire, the album floats in a similar realm as Kanye West’s 808 Heartbreak. Unwrap the well thought out packaging containing 11 skillfully produced tracks. Darien Brockington, who has been with them since the beginning, is very prominent on most of the songs where as Yazarah’s presence is limited. Muhsinah who appeared on Leave it all Behind does not return and Jesse Boykins III who was on tour with them earlier this year is a welcomed addition.

How was your cancer detected? January 5, 2002, I self-discovered a small lump on my left breast while doing my daily breast exam in the shower. Later that day, I called to make an appointment at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. January 15, 2002, I had my initial appointment. The doctor ordered four consecutive mammograms and a sonogram, which were all performed on me the same day. Before leaving the hospital it was confirmed by the doctor at West Penn Hospital that I had a mass on my breast...I had breast cancer. I was encouraged by a family member to seek a second opinion on my diagnoses. As a result, January 20, 2002, I went to a scheduled appointment to see a doctor at Shady Side Hospital, also in Pittsburgh, to receive a second opinion. At that time, it was confirmed that I was in the first stage of breast cancer. How has breast cancer changed your life?

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. African American Women have a slightly higher rate than Caucasian women to get breast cancer before the age of 40. If you have reached 40, those number are opposite. There are nearly 2.5 million Breast Cancer Survivor’s in the United States, a disease that hits close to home for many. This month we are shining a “Honey Spotlight” on one of the many survivor’s who was fortunate in detecting it early and having access to a premier medical system, The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. It’s her vibrant spirit that is adored by students that she serves at The Community College of Allegheny County. Let’s salute Pamela Moore.

I Will Survive!

one survivor’s story

the better. I found my purpose in life was to share my survival story with other women. The third way that breast cancer changed my life, is that it made me increase my faith in God. Instead of running through life, I now walk through life trusting in the Lord. Lastly, I now appreciate life even more. I realize that tomorrow is not promised to anyone. What is one thing that every woman needs to know about Breast Cancer? There are several things every woman needs to know about breast cancer. Every woman needs to know the appropriate way to perform a breast exam and should perform a self-exam at least every two weeks. In addition, every woman should have a yearly mammogram. Finally, every woman should believe they can be a survivor of breast cancer; I am eight years cancer-free!

There are four ways that breast cancer changed my life. First, I realized how misinformed I was about breast cancer. I always thought breast cancer only had an effect on women with big breasts. I never thought it could happen to me, a woman with small breasts. Secondly, I changed spiritually. I began to believe that I had a new lease on life. My entire outlook on life changed for THE WRITE TRACK
