Editor’s Note
Kia ora everyone Here we are into the second month of spring and back to Level One! Last month I talked about no-one sending me in any photos of themselves pointing to WOODY. And wow what a difference a message makes! I had FIVE people who sent me in their lovely photos! As you can see a wide variety of readers jumped into action which was awesome! So, if you want to have your name mentioned and have a photo of you pointing to WOODY in this month’s publication, please do send me these in, we would love to hear from you. This month I wanted to talk about what we call The Woodpecker! We started off over 40 years ago as a one-page bulletin, and now of course we are much more! At the Trustees meeting last month, this was deliberated, and it was decided we are a ‘community publication’, having ruled out magazine, newsletter, circular and editorial. We hope you all agree! The Woodpecker has undergone many changes over the last couple of years. We frequently hear from our lovely readers how they are enjoying receiving their monthly ‘fix’ which is great. The Pegasus Residents’ Group (PRGI) has set up a Pegasus Lake Sub-Committee to engage with the lake stakeholders and provide transparency to Pegasus residents on the progress of the lake water quality issue. We now have some meaningful traction and momentum in addressing the Algal Bloom issue for Lake Pegasus. Sadly, without any new intervention likely being in place for this coming summer season, we should anticipate Bloom impacting lake usage once more. However, hopefully, we will have an improved situation for next year.

Pegasus Community Centre News and Info SOCIAL SERVICES EVENT AT THE PEGASUS COMMUNITY CENTRE The morning of Wednesday 23rd September was a busy one at the Pegasus Community Centre as the PCC Team hosted representatives of a variety of social service agencies from Waimakariri, Hurunui and Christchurch. Approx. 45 people were present to learn more about the PCC and check it out for their future use. A marvelous morning tea spread was made possible through some of the food being donated by Satisfy Food Rescue and the Centre was looking great thanks to the loan of some greenery from Woodend Nurseries (thanks Stu!). Huge thanks also to our volunteers on the day…we definitely couldn’t have done it without you!
Some of the crowd networking at the PCC event There was genuine surprise from many present at just how much the PCC has to offer and many expressed an interest in bringing their service to Waimakariri residents by having a regular presence at the centre. The main aim of the event was to raise awareness of the facility in a way that results in local communities having easier access to valuable services. PCC Team member Roger Rule addressed those present pointing out that with a current population of approx. 8,000 in the immediate catchment area of Tuahiwi, Woodend, Waikuku and Pegasus, plus rapid growth occurring in both Woodend and Pegasus, the availability of social services is becoming increasingly essential. The services represented were too many to list here, but included; counselling, disability services, mental health, budget advice, support for the elderly, Citizens Advice Bureau and Pegasus Medical Centre. We will keep you Roger Rule chats with Snr Sgt Stephen Daniels updated on this page in future editions. Woodend Methodist The next couple of months will be rather busy with movies and fundraising events. On Saturday 3 October there is a Parish Garage Sale at Trinity Methodist Church in King Street Rangiora from 8.30am to 1.00pm. Everyone welcome. Thank you for all your cooperation and support through the COVID Pandemic. As you know, things can change quickly, and we want to reassure all our patients that we continue to evaluate and respond to changes as directed by the Ministry of Health and work within the guidelines. At alert level 1, we are still required to have patients sign in at Reception either using the manual tracer or the QR code. Any patients with respiratory symptoms, should call first and discuss their condition with a nurse. The nurse will do an assessment over the phone and if you need to be seen at the practice, you may be asked to wait in your car. If you meet the Ministry of Health criteria, a free COVID swab will be offered at the Centre. The criteria are subject to change. If you need to see a GP, this will be arranged, and you will be asked to wear a mask. Results of COVID swabs are texted to you as soon as they become available. We have resumed all our services including minor surgeries, mole checks, smears, immunisations and health checks and Saturday morning clinics. Most of our visiting specialists have resumed their regular clinics at the medical centre. If you have a medical emergency or are acutely unwell, please call 111. Page 10 The Woodpecker October 2020

NAMING OF LAKE PEGASUS SWINGBRIDGE The swingbridge over Lake Pegasus has recently been named ‘Bob’s Bridge’ in honour of the town’s founder, Bob Robertson who passed away in November 2014.

Pegasus resident and organiser of the naming and signage for the swingbridge, Rhonda Mather, said; “Although Bob was known for his big projects, he clearly didn’t have a big ego to go with that, as nothing in Pegasus was named after him. This recognition and acknowledgement is long overdue.” Bob’s family and colleagues were consulted about the bridge-naming idea earlier in the year and have expressed their support for seeing Bob recognised in this way. Hetty Van Hale from Infinity Investment Group at Wanaka commented that; “It is a lovely tribute to Bob as it really was one of his very special projects and a lot of his time and energy went into the design of this bridge. It was important to him that it was of very high quality and nothing like any other town in New Zealand had.” The idea of naming the bridge after Bob Robertson couldn’t proceed without the approval of Templeton Group, the current owners of the bridge and Lake. The new sign for ‘Bob’s Bridge’ includes a photo of Bob on the bridge, which was used with permission from Stuff Limited. Infinity Wanaka staff designed the sign and it was made and installed by Mark Larsen, from Mark Larsen Signs, Kaiapoi. The signs are located at either end of the bridge and were paid for by the Pegasus Residents’ Group.

Bob Robertson
Well it has been an unusual term with the differing Covid-19 Alert Levels, but we have all learnt to adapt and have become more resilient from the changes. We now have our students coming into school by themselves and getting themselves organised ready for the school day as a direct result of the Alert Level 2 when parents dropped them off at the gates. Our School Monster Raffle was drawn this week under Police supervision. All winners have now been notified. The list of winning numbers is on our website: www.woodend.school.nz We thank all the community for their support with this. Our Senior Kapahaka was invited to perform at Woodend Preschool for Maori Language week. They performed their usual routine plus a few extra songs for the preschool children who enjoyed joining in. We then had a shared morning tea where both groups enjoyed interacting too. MainPower Community Fund Finalist: Woodend School has made it through to the finalist round in the Mainpower Community Fund. What we now need is YOU voting is now open. We have applied for Kapahaka uniform for both Senior and Junior students. Below is a link to cast your vote. We have been successful in this and hopefully next term will have a new BBQ cooking up our sausage sizzles every Friday. Our thanks go to CERT for their support to our school. We have planned for next term an Ethel & Bethel Bingo Babes Night as a fundraiser. This is scheduled for Friday 30 October at the Kaiapoi Working Men’s Club from 7pm - 10 pm. Tickets will be available from the school office next term. Grab your friends and join us for a fun night. Prizes, Chocolate Wheel Raffles and lots of laughs! St Barnabas Now we’re back to Level 1, our Sunday services are returning to a more familiar format. Including being able to take Communion together again, which of course we can’t do during the higher levels. Our home groups and Mainly Music will be taking a break over the school holidays as usual, however our two services continue to run year round. If you would like to join us anytime, we would love to see you - although the two services are quite different (the 4.30pm service is run on contemporary lines, while the 9.30am is more traditional), the welcome would be the same! The sun shone on our garage sale on 19 September and it was a success in more ways than one. Buyers and sellers alike brought along their goodwill and sense of humour and everyone seemed to have a good time. The church members involved certainly did – as one person put it, ‘there was a wonderful feeling of fun and fellowship’. It was great to see so many of you there supporting us – and thanks for taking so many books off our hands! Fun and fellowship are things we all need in these uncertain times – so keep well and keep smiling!

Woodend-Sefton Community Board Projects Underway
Youth Space in Pegasus – Time to start thinking about what you would like to see, as consultation will be starting later this year. Funding is available in the next financial year for a dedicated youth space in Pegasus. This has been on the wish list for some time and we want to work alongside youth. It’s important the end result is something that will be well used and fits as part of the wider community too. The Board has made it clear that although this project is often referred to as a skate park, this is only one possible option, and we want to encourage ideas from youth and the community. Hurunui Reserve, Pegasus – after a number of delays, work should start on the natural play area in this neighbourhood reserve, including a small football goal later in October.
What’s Been Happening
Council have started work on planning a proposed extension of the Rangiora Woodend Path to complete a safe connection into Woodend. A workshop was held with the Board explaining the options, including the connection to the signalised pedestrian crossing on SH1 outside the school that NZTA has approved. Unfortunately, this won’t be operational until the start of the 2021 school year. Staff will make some changes after feedback from the Board and then go out for community consultation in coming weeks. The SH1 crossing will give cyclists and walkers a safe place to cross and connect to the existing path on Gladstone Road to Gladstone Park and

Pegasus and also to the Jill Creamer Trail to Woodend Beach. The Board approved a discretionary grant for the North Canterbury Rams Indoor Sports Club for two trophies and two medals. This club has been reformed and had a strong result in their first year entering a team in the Christchurch Indoor Cricket league. The awards will help provide a way of encouraging team members. The Board approved new street names for the Ravenswood subdivision including two names gifted by Te Ngāi Tūāhuriri Rūnanga to the developer which will be Clare and Jasmine Streets.

Natural Hazards - the Council has been updating models and planning maps to show the possible extent of natural hazards on land. Community College North Canterbury FREE Education for 16-19-year olds Walking into the Community College North Canterbury, you instantly get the feel that this place is different to school. Students in chef outfits are busy preparing food before their busy café day. The barista machine hums as students fine-tune their coffee-making skills. Holly Taw (11) from West Melton was also in her first competition and competing against others who had competition experience. However once on the matts, it was her delivery that caught the eye of the judges and she moved through the rounds to meet her team and close friend Wini Merriman in the final.

Woodend girls Shauna Barclay (13) and Daisy Little were drawn together in the Development Category. First up Grey Belt Shauna overcome her nerves in her first ever competition. She gave a good account of herself and narrowly missed out on moving to the next round. Daisy a purple belt performed exceptionally well and went on to earn a place in the final. It was a very close final and her efforts were rewarded with a well-deserved silver medal. Black Belt Ruby Wilson from Kaiapoi met her equal in the final. Ruby gave a strong performance and showed great technical skill and composure far above
Wini from Woodend found another level as she performed each of her Kata with grace, speed and power. For the final she chose her favourite Kata Bassai-Dai which she delivered brilliantly to win her first gold medal and the title of CWKA South Island Kata Champion 2020. Kev Merriman said “I am pleased for all the girls as they have listened well in class and trained hard to earn their medals. Prior to the tournament, the girls were extremely nervous, but now they have each found a new level of confidence within themselves that I hope they will continue to ‘build’ upon”. He added, “It is great to have our little Kaiapoi based Karate club represent North Canterbury and compete against the biggest clubs in New Zealand. I am proud of all of them, but particularly proud as a father to call my daughter Wini, ‘Champ’”.

This Month with Harry Continuing on from last month’s rant on the exciting and dramatic saga of my losing a leg. And I don’t mean losing it in the scenario of misplacing it or forgetting where I put it. I mean the hacking off of the left standing pin. From Public I was transferred to ward B1 at Burwood. What a great place- big and airy. The staff were absolute top class, the food was excellent and the challenges challenging. I learnt how to transfer from wheelchair to commode in a move that would make Isadora Duncan look like an elephant. I learnt how to site the aforesaid commode backwards over the toilet and never once missed scoring a bullseye. I learnt how to site the aforesaid commode into the shower and clean myself. All a fairly steep learning curve especially like getting up off the floor if I was unlucky enough to get down there in the first place. The secret to it all is to think about the next move and for me, not being all that bright, that takes a bit longer than most. I was probably the youngest in the ward so all the nurses flirted with me. I think it was flirting but after three weeks I got the distinct feeling they
were glad to see the back of me. Settling back into home also proved to be a challenge. My three cats; Muriel, Freda and Rupert, whom I missed dreadfully took a while to accept the boss in a wheelchair. Poor old Muriel who is 21 years old had her tail run over a couple of times which didn’t help. One of the things a wheelchair bound joker finds out quick is that things are too high. The electric stove, the rayburn and the sink bench. One cannot look into a pot or pan and lifting them off is difficult. Doing the dishes whilst having to rest one’s elbows on the edge is also a hassle. Cupboards and fridge doors are also problematic. We are solving all this- I am building a granny flat near the house. There will be no cupboards, just shelves and because I like cooking on a coal range, I will install my flash cream and green Shacklock 501 which is decidedly lower. The sink bench will be lower but the eating table will have to be high enough to get the wheelchair under. In short, designerfriendly for a one-legged legend!! However, the legend may not be one legged for much longer. Cont’d on Page 37

Cont’d from Page 33 This Month with Harry Things are underway for a prosthetic to be attached and I have had a couple of sessions at the artificial limb centre at Burwood. I suppose I better start looking for an eye patch and a parrot. Apparently, my stump is full of water and one has to wear a stump shrinker 24/7 to get rid of it. Once it’s gone, I’ll have a mould done and the prosthetic attached. Look out world or at least Woodend. The hospital has supplied me with an electric chair to whizz around the house in. It’s taken a bit of time to master with gouges out of doors and wrecked furniture etc etc. Probably the worst casualty involved a fairly valuable Victorian nest of small tables that was dear to my late mum. One was completely demolished when my sleeve got caught in the forward button and another lost two legs. There are enough amputees in the house at the moment so the wee table ending up like Douglas Bader was a disaster. In order to have a bit of freedom and not having to rely on my very good friends and relations to cart me around, I have acquired a mobility scooter. Not one of those 4- wheel shopriders that old people hoon about on. Oh no a smart 3-wheel job similar to a Harley Davidson. With bigger wheels to handle shingle roads and a flag on a stick to donate whether I’m coming or going. A two-speed model which is neither slow or slower and capable of 50 kms on a full charge. In top gear I hurtle along at 15.4 kms per hour. At this speed the power poles Page 36 The Woodpecker October 2020
go passed like a bloody picket fence but still gives me a chance to find anything that has fallen off a truck , look in ladies bedrooms and dodge the dog shite of which there is more than adequate in our region. 20 minutes to Dr Steve where a toot on the horn brings Robbing to open door number two. In we go to fill most of the waiting room. Unfortunately, the buggy won’t fit into nurse Marilyn’s, Woodend’s answer to Gladys Emmanuelle, surgery room. As viewing my stump necessitates the removal of my pants, Nurse Marilyn likes this, the waiting room has to be cleared by all those readily offended. Only the interested may stay!! After inspection the pants have to be put back on and Nurse Marilyn helps with this. It’s 20 minutes to New World in Rangiora where I transfer to one of their wheelchairs, attach a trolley and the concierge, the lovely Lyn, pushes me around. Recently on a journey up and down the aisles we met a little fellow of about 4 or 5 who said “look mummy that man has only got one leg” I informed him that my leg had fallen off because I didn’t do as my mummy told me and I didn’t eat my broccoli. In short, I had been naughty. To finish off with, which has nothing to do with being legless. I have just read a survey report done by the British Girl Guide association on why English children are becoming less adventurous. They found the two main reasons were play stations etc and over protective mums and dads. The helicopter parents who hover a lot. Is Great Britain the only country with this problem? JH

Community Centre Stage On Friday, the 25 September the new stage at the Community Centre had its first official use at the Woodend School end of term assembly. The Woodend Community Association raised the $8500 needed for this project and will be a great asset that the whole community will be able to use. Controlled Pedestrian Crossing It was with much disappointment that the community was informed that the controlled pedestrian crossing due to start soon has now been deferred until next year. Fingers crossed that it will be completed for the start of the 2021 school year!!
