the LANGLEY PRECINCT PROJECT A place for the next generation of female leaders in Australia

“An encouraging and supportive environment in which to live…” What the new precinct delivers

New Sibyl Centre

The Langley Precinct development will bring a new benchmark in facilities for students and guests of the Women’s College and the University of Sydney. The first major building program to be undertaken in over forty years, it will enhance the College’s reputation for scholarship, leadership and professional development.

Founded on the principles of equal access, the Women’s College has played a significant role in educating women in Australia. Gesturing visually to this history, the landmark new Sibyl Centre will be a hub of learning, creativity and dialogue, adding to the intellectual, social and architectural heritage of the College and the University.

“The Langley Precinct Project with the new Sibyl Centre will be a place for the next generation of female leaders in Australia to grow in, learn in and lead in. I can’t wait to come back and visit to see the improvements the Langley development will make to my once dear home which has shaped me as the leader I am today.”

“I have found Women’s to be a place that fosters a supportive and encouraging environment in which to live. With the development of the Langley Precinct and new Sibyl Centre, I know that the College will further enable Women’s students to explore their potential while at university.”

Sibyl Over a century ago the first College Principal, Louisa Macdonald, commissioned a play to mark the College’s 21st birthday. An ambitious project, the play titled A Mask was first performed with great ceremony on the front lawn of College in 1913. In classical literature the figure of Sibyl represents female wisdom and foresight. As the central figure of A Mask, Sibyl presides over a pageant of historically significant women and looks towards a future when women’s burdens are shaken off. The College’s academic journal took the name Sibyl in 2013. Women’s College has been a stronghold of female education and professional advancement since 1892, encapsulating in its walls both the history of women’s higher education in Australia and a cogent promise of its future. Naming the new research centre in the Langley Precinct Development The Sibyl Centre gestures to the generations of female leaders who have studied here, connecting the College’s important cultural heritage with its promised future.

“The development of the Langley Precinct and construction of the new Sibyl Centre will provide greater opportunities for collaboration, performance, study and socialising to enrich the College and university experience for current and future students.” (REBECCA HOLDT, SENIOR STUDENT 2014)
