GOVERNOR RACE HEATS UP BY BRADY GULLUSCIO Staff Reporter

As November 4th approaches, many Rhode Islanders are deciding between voting for the Democratic candidate Gina Raimondo and the Republican candidate Allan Fung; both of whom won their respective party’s nomination on the 9th of September. Gina Raimondo could become the first woman governor in Rhode Island history. Raimondo was raised in Smithfield,

Rhode Island in a tight knit Italian family. As a child, Raimondo rode a RIPTA bus to LaSalle Academy. It was there that Raimondo graduated as valedictorian of her class. After LaSalle, Raimondo attended Harvard where she was recognized as the top economics student in the class. She then received a scholarship to Oxford University where she received her doctorate. Raimondo then worked as a founding member and vice president to a venture capital firm called Village Capitol. In 2010, Gina was elected

into the position of State Treasurer by receiving more votes than any statewide candidate. Allan Fung, the Republican candidate will be the first Chinese American Mayor, if elected, in State history. Fung was born in Providence in 1970 and graduated from Classical High School before he attended Rhode Island College in Providence. It was there that Fung received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science. Fung then progressed to University of Boston where he received his Juris Doctorate. In 1999 Fung worked as the

Special Assistant Attorney General for the Rhode Island department of the Attorney Generals Office until 2001. From 2003 to 2007 Fung was elected as Cranston’s citywide counsel man. In 2008, Fung was elected into the mayor’s office of the third largest city in the state, Cranston. While working as mayor in Cranston Fung created 1000 new jobs while he reduced the cities operational expenses. While Fung was in office he held numerous town meetings to hear the opinions of the people. Gina Raimondo plans to in-

crease the State’s condition is primarily based on her economic experiences and future economic plans for investment of Rhode Island’s funds. During her time as state treasurer Raimondo placed state pension funds to increase Rhode Island’s revenue. Raimondo placed the pensions in Hedge Funds, which are funds that require a large initial investment with others in a private group. These investments are monitored and generally return profitable revenue. Hedge Funds usually perform better when the market is decreasing in value.

Due to the fact that the stock market has been on the rapid increase since 2008, Raimondo’s plan didn’t create the profit that was expected. Although hedge funds can be described as slightly risky the investment managed to return a profit: 24.17% in 2013 before the funds were voted on to be pulled out. Raimondo has campaigned behind the belief that she has created over 1000 jobs based on Rhode Island companies. Before September 9th, her opponents argued that the See Election on page 8

Senior Barbecue returns to the town beach BY ANDREA MORRONE Probationary Barker Staff

The Class of 2015 started the year off right as they stormed the town beach on September 7, 2014 for their Senior Barbecue. The perfect beach day was a great omen for the Senior Class and all their senior events to follow. Over 100 students showed up to enjoy the day of fun in the sun, sand, and water. The students enjoyed a day of beach volleyball, soccer, football, frisbee, and many other activities. Interestingly, an adaptation of soccer and volleyball was created by members of the boys soccer team. The most memorable event of the afternoon was the tug-of-war competition. The girls took on the boys and the boys became victorious, but once the teams became co-ed the real fun began.

Students were pulled to the ground and falling all over each other but not one was without a smile on their face. The competition brought the students together to work as a team and showed just how great the senior class is as a whole. The event in it entirety was a major success. Student’s enjoyed the food provided and had a great time spending time together with the many activities provided. Class President Jack Patten says “Our class is unique in the sense that we all share similar values and the senior barbecue is a perfect example of how we all come together as a family and enjoy each others company.” The senior class officers and advisors want to thank everyone involved and hope to see just as good of a turn-out at the many other Senior Events planned for the upcoming year.

As the leaves begin to fall from the trees, students begin to enter WHS. Ushered in by the shuffling of feet through the doorways, money begins to enter the pockets of Classes 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. Through fundraisers or events, each class has uniquely produced an idea in hopes to earn funding for future occasions. This year’s class of 2015, with the help of Dawg Pound leaders Chad Raiche and Tyler Shawn, has begun to sell new Dawg Pound Tee Shirts featuring a Westerly Bulldog centered with a bold blue “Dawg Pound.” These newly designed shirts were sold for $10 during all lunches. The white shirts are great for participating in the “White-Outs” planned for the upcoming home football and basketball games. Proceeds will benefit senior activities such as Senior Prom and the All Night Grad Party. The Senior Class once again hosted the back-to-school dance. The theme allows for casual attire offering a time spent catching up with friends and meeting new students. Andrea Morrone, Senior Social Chair shared, “the dance is super fun, as it is every year. It’s a great way to kick off all the fun events we have to look forward to this year”. All grades were invited and tickets were sold during lunch for $10. The Second Annual Beach Bums Café & Creamery fundraiser, hosted by Character Ed, was a huge success on September 14 from 3-9 pm. The fundraiser is designed to be a family-friendly event. All food and ice cream was sold at half off prices with “100% of the proceeds directly benefitting The Tower Street Community Center to help local families” mentioned Meghan Boegler, leader of the Junior Character Ed Team. The money raised helps with housing, heating, and necessities. Many found the event to be a great way to end the summer enjoying discounted ice cream while benefitting our community. On Saturday, September 27, the Class of 2016 hosted their first golf tournament, funded through $100 tee sponsors and $100 golfer’s fee. Class President Connor McGill commented, “This tournament will be a huge fundraising success that will help in the funding of junior prom as well as some events occurring senior year”. Everyone was welcomed to join this tournament. Shotgun start took place at 1:00pm sharp. After the conclusion of the tournament, there was a cookout, a raffle, and live music. As a sophomore fundraiser, the class of 2017 will be hosting a dinner at Lucky House on October 16. Lucky House will

Money Already Made off the Royal Baby BY CATHERINE MONTALTO Editor in Chief

September marked a huge announcement for the British royal family. As the world came to find out, the Duchess of Cambridge is now expecting her second child. The baby will be due spring of 2015. The baby will join big brother Prince George who just turned one this past July. George is third in line to the throne, following his grandfather Prince Charles and his father Prince William. The new baby will be fourth in line, push-

ing Uncle Prince Harry down to fifth in line. Almost two years ago, the world found out Kate Middleton was expecting her first child when Clarence House released a statement explaining the Duchess was hospitalized with Hyperemesis Gravidarum. This rather rare condition is more commonly referred to as extreme morning sickness. After her first trimester, the Duchess recovered from her illness and her pregnancy continued normally. Princess Kate has also experienced Hyperemesis Gravidarum with her second

pregnancy. The Duchess was expected to make an appearance at Oxford in early September but had to cancel due to her condition. It was then the Palace announced a second royal baby was on the way. She has yet to appear in public since the proclamation. Kate also had to cancel an appearance at the Invictus Games, a trip to Malta to celebrate its fiftieth year of independence from Great Britain, and the recent opening of an art classroom patronized by a charity the Duchess sponsors.

When Kate Middleton, a commoner whose parents own Party Pieces, a party supply company in England, she began what was known as the “Kate effect.” Any outfit or piece of clothing the Duchess wore would sell out within hours of her appearance. The same was true of Prince George this past summer. On the royal tour to Australia, crowds fawned over the littlest heir. The tike’s fashion, much like his famous mother’s, inspired many with clothing such as overalls selling out quite quickly.

Similar to the Duchess’ first pregnancy, bets have already began over the gender and name of the new royal baby. Last year, over $24 million in bets were placed on baby George. Many wonder over whether the baby will be a boy or a girl with rumors over whether the Duchess is expecting twins. According the PaddyPower, a British betting site, Victoria, Mary, Elizabeth and Phillip are in the lead as top baby names. The odds for these names are 10-1. At the bottom of the list are names like Macbeth and Ringo

with 500-1 odds. Sixty percent of betters predict the baby will be another boy. As for the birth date, odds are 16-1 that the newest royal addition will be born on Queen Elizabeth II’s eighty-ninth birthday: April 21, 2015. Regardless of girl, boy, twins, or name, the royal on the way will certainly be a money maker, a trendsetter and a newsmaker. Bump watchers and royal fans alike will have to wait until spring for the answers. Until then, however, all hopefuls will have to join the “Great Kate Wait.”

HONG KONG- In the central business district of Hong Kong, thousands of protestors hold demonstrations; sit-ins and civil disobedience in the streets after China’s new laws regarding elections. While the city’s chief executive was set to be elected by Hong Kong’s citizens in 2017, a new law will require a Beijing committee to select the candidate. Pro-democracy activists are pushing for China to allow universal suffrage in Hong Kong, so large crowds of people took to the streets for demonstrations. While the revolts began peacefully, protestors began arming themselves with plastic raincoats and face masks once police began throwing tear gas. To

shield themselves, civilians even brought along umbrellas, resulting in the name “the umbrella revolution”. Although the law which was meant to remain in place for fifty years until 2047, threatens to crumble Hong Kong’s democracy after just one decade. With a report of 56 people injured by police forces and nearly 100 other people arrested, protestors prepare for potential brutal police action in the very near future. SYRIA- The U.S. began launching airstrikes against the terrorist group ISIS on September 23rd, hitting at least twenty targets around the group’s stronghold in Raqqa. Other Arab countries also aided the airstrikes, including Saudi Arabia and The United Arab Emi-

rates. No immediate news of casualties as a result of these bombings has yet been released. Up until now, ISIS captured and held hundreds of square miles of territory throughout Syria and Iraq, aiming to create a large Islamic territory in the Middle East. Due to their growth of power and control, President Obama made the decision to involve American forces in the issue, although he initially resisted. Many U.S. citizens fear involvement in Syria could provoke attacks on the United States, and Iraq’s prime minister even warned of potential subway attacks in large cities such as New York City. While New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio released a public statement assuring citizens the attacks were not confirmed in any way, the safety of the U.S.

INDONESIA- Parliament in Indonesia recently voted to dissolve direct local elections, a political move that will be yet another detriment to the country’s crumbling democratic stare. Supporters of the law change argue local elections could provoke a conflict and cause damage to the already fragile condition of Indonesia’s government. The Indonesian Democratic Party opposed the bill, but more than half of the country’s political parties voted in favor of the law. An estimated $5 billion

An estimated 250 hikers were on the summit at the time of the eruption, but a strong possibility remains that many of those hikers escaped in time. WHS THEATRE SCRAPBOOK EXITS THE STAGE,BUT THE PERFORMERS’SPIRIT LIVES ON

BY ERICA TERRANOVA Opinion Editor

For over 30 years, the town of Westerly has been enamored by the various theatre productions put on by Theatre Scrapbook Company, founded by Mr. DeAngelis in the 1980’s. Beginning with the famous musical, Oklahoma, DeAngelis directed many musicals and theatrical performances through Theatre Scrapbook, drawing in large crowds of performing-arts lovers. After a short hiatus, lasting less than a decade, DeAngelis returned with small cabaret performances, which consisted of selections from a variety of musicals. After getting his feet back on the ground, Theatre Scrapbook performed the famous dark musical, Sweeney Todd, in 2011. A more recent success of DeAngelis’ was Les Misérables, performed by Theatre Scrapbook Company in May 2012. This past year, DeAngelis’ final musical with WHS was Godspell, the first musical he ever directed. But where is Mr. DeAngelis now, and what will come of Theatre Scrapbook? Despite his retirement after last year, Mr. DeAngelis is keeping himself busy. He may have retired from his duties as a high school teacher, but he’s far from done with teaching, and even farther from done with music. As a matter of fact, DeAngelis is still teaching the love he’s most passionate about, music. Instead of being located at WHS, he’s set up his own studio downtown, where he now gives private music lessons. His studio is located down-

town at Park Place, 53 High St., Unit 308 and is currently accepting students for private lessons in voice, piano, guitar, musical theatre, and vocal coaching. All ages and levels are welcome. Ben Barber, who directed a number of DeAngelis’ shows, shared his thoughts on the new Theatre Scrapbook. “…Two years ago I along with Mr. D’s two children started the Children’s Theatre Scrapbook Company, named after the high school club started 33 years ago. Our goal is to continue the tradition of bringing theatre to youth in our community. We started with elementary and middle school students and are now expanding to high school students.” Children’s Theatre Scrapbook has performed the musical Annie, as well as Aristocats. The participation of elementary and middle school children is encouraging to those wanting to keep performing arts alive in Westerly. This year, Children’s Theatre Scrapbook Company plans on performing its first show to include actors up to high school age. Reverting back to its original ways, the theatre company extended the invitation to audition to actors and actresses also outside of Westerly High School, ages 7-18. In time for Christmas, the performances of Scrooge: A Christmas Carol will be December 4th7th at Westerly High School. Auditions will be on October 7th, from 6-9pm. While it is refreshing to see the phoenix that is Children’s Theatre Scrapbook rise up from the ashes of Theatre Scrapbook Company, the alumni of Westerly High School who have put

their heart and soul into performing with the old company feel a part of themselves missing. Many miss the three-hour long rehearsals – learning music, memorizing lines, practicing blocking on stage. They miss the excitement of preview performance assemblies, done the week of the show. Most of all, they miss their beloved director/musical director, Mr. DeAngelis. His passion for theatre showed through at every meeting, rehearsal, and performance. Over the course of 33 years, DeAngelis has touched the hearts of hundreds of students. This includes one alumnus of Westerly High School, Nick DePerry, who graduated in 2012. DePerry starred in one of many cabaret performances as an underclassman. As a junior, he played the role of Antony in Sweeney Todd, in 2011. His senior year, he played the role of Marius in Les Misérables. To this day, he remains in touch with DeAngelis. “Some men are able to achieve a kind of greatness in their life that comes not only from the dreams and goals they are able to give others, but their determination to help them achieve those goals. There are not many I know can boast of having done this at any point in their career,” says DePerry. “Mr. D is one of those men who accomplished this on the regular. There is no shortage of words to describe the impact he had on my life, and in return I can only wish him a very peaceful

“The first few days certainly helped, but since then I feel like I could be more productive in another class- I hope it’s not going to be a waste of time.” The Class of 2015 is the only graduating class remaining at WHS to not have taken this course. Senior Ruedi Hauser remarks, “I never seem to have enough room on my schedule for the classes I wish to take, so I suppose I’m glad I didn’t have to take WHS 101,” many other seniors agree. No matter how helpful these required courses may seem, between Computer Apps and Economics, it is hard to find the room to delve into a class of personal or relevant interest; luckily, those classes are in abundance. The Virtual High School (VHS) program has been around for a while, with a seemingly unlimited diversity of potential subjects. Because of the profusion of online opportunities, VHS is only an asset to the program of studies, but is it convenient for an entire course to be in a virtual world? Perhaps for some classes-a computer class especially-but for many other courses, technology only provides another obstacle

to face, and furthermore hinders potential learning. Bradley Alicchio, a senior taking French V AP on VHS agrees, “I would rather not take the class online-I’m not getting the face to face interaction I need to practice the language, and I’m often confused-because I can’t internet, but I’m glad I can still take the class”. Other than French, some other VHS courses are Latin, Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations, and Now What Will You Do? These online courses also rely quite a bit of student responsibility. VHS teachers are on different schedules than WHS, so they give assignments at the beginning of the VHS week, and students are expected to complete the assignments on their own time, before the end of the week. The key is not to log on hours before the assignments are due, wearing the scarlet letter “P” for procrastination. So if you are a responsible student who loves technology, by all means, go for it. The Program of Studies has been upgraded very recently, with more than just online classes. Some popular new additions this year are International Business, which will be taught

NEW CLASSES TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE FOR STUDENTS? BY MICHELLE HANSSEN Staff Reporter

We are lucky at Westerly High School to have so many programs available, or opening up to us. In the past few years, more and more opportunities have opened up- all created with the best of intentions of course, but do these new classes provide a meaningful and valuable learning experience? Or are they simply a required waste of space on a student’s schedule? About three years ago, WHS 101 became a required course for incoming freshmen, with the goal for students to be as successful as possible in Westerly High School-and beyond. In the class, freshmen learn how to be organized, how to deal with stress, and how to use time wisely. In the first few weeks of school, WHS 101 students can be spotted around the school on their scavenger hunt to find the clinic, or to get the signatures of Mr. Federico and upperclassmen, among other things, in order to learn how the school works. This proves favorable to many, including freshman Ben Hanssen, who goes on to say,

Photo by Barker Staff by Mr. Hathaway in the second semester, Film studies, and Forensics. Senior, Brady Gulluscio who is taking Forensics says “I can already tell I’m learning a lot, it’s intriguing and fun. Golly gosh, I’m so happy I took it this year”.

Film studies, taught by Mrs. Tallardy, has only been getting positive reviews from students. These new classes provide opportunities for students to delve deeper into fields of their choice, and grant the background students will need in

specific subjects they might wish to pursue. Not all of us want to remember the complexities of pre-calculus or photosynthesis; we will take the most from the random classes we choose, that spark our interest.

SNEAKS AND GEEKS

WOMEN’S FALL FASHION BY LIBBY CASTALDI

BY EMILIO GUIDO

Fashion Editor

Columnist

We are celebrating a second year of this column, so I would like to thank everyone who enjoys this column as well as the entire paper. But now lets jump into the stuff that’s really important: the sneakers. In the last month Nike and LeBron James unveiled the LeBron 12’s in a cool teal and orange color way which are the same colors as the Miami Dolphins. Ironically, LeBron is no longer affiliated with any Miami franchise since he signed a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers this past offseason. Not too long after the signing, Kevin Love requested a trade landing him in Cleveland and 2013’s number one draft pick, Anthony Bennett and the 2014 number one draft pick, Andrew Wiggins in Minnesota. The Cavaliers are heavy favorites to make a solid run for an NBA ring this year. A possible starting line-up may be: Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters, LeBron James, Kevin Love and Anderson Varejao. We will see if LeBron’s new team will be able to take on the reigning champs, the San Antonio Spurs. With D. Rose healthy and just recently leaving Serbia with Team U.S.A. hanging a gold medal around his neck there is a lot of optimism around him this season. There is also a lot of optimism around the Adidas headquarters with the upcoming release of D. Rose 5’s. The designer of the shoe put a lot of personal and interesting information about Derrick Rose’s life into his design. For example, the ankle support on the shoes has R.A.D. which stands for the first names

Fall is always the most influential season of the year when it comes to fashion! New trends are always introduced in store windows and fashion week. There are seven trends Ive taken a particular liking to this season.

of his brothers: Reggie, Allen and Dwayne who protected him through high school in the depths of Chicago. They all knew Derrick was their chance to get out of poverty. Scribed on the toe is Brenda (his mother) and P.J. (his son). There still has not been any word about KD 8’s or Kobe 10’s. A few months ago, Nike and the rest of the sneaker world went upside down when Kevin Durant was considering a sneaker contract worth $285 Million from Under Armour. Nike made a counter-offer of $350 Million to keep KD even after he retires. The sneaker and basketball world has very high expectations for Kevin after winning his first Most Valuable Player Award, landing the cover of the latest and greatest NBA 2K game and the KD 8’s. Nike is continuing to release new colorways for the KD 7’s. We may see pictures of samples for the KD 8’s in the next couple months but there has been no word about a new KD design. Kobe Bryant is coming off of surgery and physical therapy after tearing his Achilles and hamstring in the same season. Word around the practice gym is even after the injuries and old age he is looking good for the season, even though last year the Lakers had the record-breaking worst

season in franchise history. During free agency there wasn’t a huge shake up in the roster beside a very slim possibility of signing Carmelo Anthony. As a Lakers fan, I’m not quite surprised with the outcome and another rebuilding season. Carlos Boozer and Jeremy Lin will be putting on a Lakers jersey this year. The only excitement coming out of the Staples Center arena this year will be the Clippers and how well Julius Randle and Lakers’ new coach Byron Scott will do. People will also be watching to see how many games Steve Nash will play before he gets injured and how well Kobe will do in his possible last season. Even after all this I’m still a Lakers fan. Back to the sneakers, the Kobe 9 was revolutionary for basketball sneakers and Kobe’s signature line. They sold very well and are continuing to release new colorways for the model. Nike hasn’t said anything about a Kobe 10. There is a lot of hype around the release on the design, whether they will go back to a low top and what new technology will Nike bring. There is a lot going on in the basketball and sneaker world even before the regular seasons starts. Stay tuned to find out more in the next issue of The Barker!

MEN’S FALL FASHION BY JACOB GROSS Lifestyle Editor

Here we are again, the fall fashion season is once again upon us. Scarves, jackets, and blazers are now wearable. This season, the focus seems to be on neutral, earthy tones rather than bright colors and sharp lines. These earthy tones are popularly worn in flannels and denims. Kiel James Patrick, the quintessential male fashion guru, has been switching his Instagram into a fall fashion debut. On the few chilly days we’ve had this fall so far, he’s posted pictures of his cream-colored sweaters, green checkered blazers and deep brown oxfords. Of course it is important to

HOW TO START A FASHION BUSINESS

keep in mind that KJP gets paid to be a male fashion beacon, but we can always take inspiration from him here at Westerly High School. For example, a possible outfit combination inspired by our famous friend could be as simple as a dark wash pair of jeans, maybe distressed, a KJP belt, and a thick, light colored sweater. The whole concept of dressing up at Westerly High School has a skewed meaning. We need to invest money in valuable and quality articles of clothing. On a European note, kilts made a debut at Paris Fashion

Week. They are on par with the plaid trend, but not entirely practical for the everyday school outfit. An alternative option would be a pair of dark colored plaid golf pants, paired with a polo or a sweater and blazer. Fall hairstyles are also a hotbutton issue this fall. The overall trend is structured but messy. Rough edges, but shorter on the side and longer on the top. Overall, this fall is aiming for warm, comfortable clothing which will make all of our lives a little bit happier.

STAY BOLD BY LEILA COX

What is something necessary for all members of society to own? You guessed it-clothes! Whether you are growing out of your old ones or simply expanding your wardrobe, everybody buys clothes. While some large businesses such as Forever 21 or H&M have cheaper prices, smaller businesses or boutiques such as our local Woodees often have higher prices and better quality clothing. Consumers may complain about the amount of money flying out of their pocket, but most cannot fathom how difficult it is to run a business. First and foremost, a prospective business owner must have the skills to either design clothing personally or hire a fashion designer. One must be very communicative and flexible, as they will have to meet with many contacts and hire employees to run their store. Also, a prospective business owner will need to find funding, so if your products are not unique and eyecatching to the public, you probably will not be able to sell your item on the shelves or furthermore make any profit. Creativity is a sole component in running a business in the fashion industry, as well as being organized and keeping up with a detailed business plan. For those who still think they want to own their own business, you may be wondering what is the best way to get a jumpstart in the fashion business or designing industry. According to Huffington Post, a college degree such as a MBA is not always neces-

sary. Although it will provide you concrete education and skills, the amount of money in student loans can be put towards the business and one can simply pick up the phone to make connections and do research on their own. Prior experience in boutiques or large merchandise companies is beneficial as well as always knowing your facts, but do not always assume that a Master’s degree in business is needed to start your own business. Found in our own local TLC boutique located in downtown Westerly I interviewed Tina Pagliusi co-owner of the small but tasteful shop. Tina received her high school degree and then attended University of Rhode Island. She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising and Textiles, so she came from a well educated background and skills which she says are essential in owning a business. When asked where to start in the establishment of a business, Tina stated, “You need the experience with a big company first, to gain communication and people skills. Then, you can take and incorporate them into your own business later on.” The store sells a wide variety of items, from scarves to clothes to a diverse jewelry collection. Although many aspiring fashion owners first jump to thinking about designing clothes, Tina said that the most popular items in her store are the accessories. Not only are they convenient and suitable for all audiences, but clothes are

more individualized to certain crowds of people and therefore not purchased as often. The career profile for business owners can be stressful at times but very self-rewarding, especially for those with a deep passion in the fashion industry. According to Tina Pagliusi, “the business is always on your mind and there is a lot of work after hours.” Young adults aspiring to start their own business must be very dedicated with their time and patience. “Outside factors you do not have control over, the economy, people’s needs, and unpredictable times are all challenging to deal with”, said the co-owner of TLC Boutique. In addition, Tina says she absolutely supports small businesses over larger corporations. Ralph Lauren said, “Fashion is about something that comes from within you.” In our crazy world of style and spunk, there is a world full of secrecy and fear. Close your eyes and flashback to who you sit between in math class. To the right is a very handsome boy dressed in the latest trends. He is wearing the newly released Jordan sneakers with clean Elite Socks, crisp polo shirt, and perfectly slicked back hair. Isn’t he a babe? Now, to the left, the memory is not as vivid as it was for the guy on the right. All you can remember is the guy next to you had strong body odor and wore the same clothes every single day. Does it ever come to mind how two similar people can be so different? Almost half of all teenagers are bullied at school over their looks. Style is diverse for many reasons, and that is simply because everyone has their own taste in apparel. Unfortunately, all people don’t feel the same way about the way they look and some choose to hide in the shadows. On the other hand, others are rather audacious and all about taking risks with their style. Style is perhaps the most common way to ex-

press oneself. If fear is what is holding one back from showing one’s true colors, it is time for change. Never be afraid to be who you are. Don’t worry about being the outsider, or the odd one. Be yourself; that is all that matters. To get away from insecurities, you must be bold. Take risks and be proud. Impress yourself before you try to impress anyone else. Erin Fusaro, a freshman at WHS, answered the following question: “Do you worry about impressing others in your sense of style?” Fusaro answers, “I don’t worry about the clothes I wear, but I try to look decent for my appeal. I don’t really feel like anyone is looking at my clothes.” The worry of what people think of you should not go before what you think of yourself. Have confidence and attitude, be spontaneous and show everyone how comfortable you are in your own skin. Dressing with confidence is more than wearing the latest trends; it is about feeling great and self-assured in any given situation. Wear whatever you want and be satisfied. Regardless of popularity or body type, self-confidence is important throughout life. Keep your head up and be-

lieve in the best. Small actions lead to bold outcomes, and once comfortable in your skin, let everyone know you have no regret in being yourself. Keep your head up high, stand up straight, and give a meaningful smile. Accept compliments when given and interact with others. Don’t ever feel shame for change, feel shame for those who don’t change. Being bold is nothing anyone can purchase or borrow- it comes from within. Go back and think about those two kids you sit between in class. Consider not only how they are different; but also why. Insecurities can’t ruin the lives of beautiful souls. Remember that you are beautiful enough, cool enough, and handsome enough. You are not worthless; you have value so act like it. For those who hide who they are by conforming to the standards of society, it is time to let out who you really are. If you prove to yourself you are proud of who you have become, no one else can tell you you’re wrong. Listen to your inner voice that speaks for your soul and be who you want to be, not only to be bold in fashion but bold in life.

Senior Stressers GOOD DRINKS BY GIANNA BRIMLOW Sports Editor

At school there is a range of academic pressure we feel, derived from a need for perfection, worry over grades, parental pressure, competition, sports, or a tough course load. For some, it’s the worry of being able to get enough credits to graduate high school, while for others it’s being able to get a 4.0 GPA to get into their reach school. No matter what our goals are, we all struggle with a tremendous amount of stress and pressure. Senior year is supposed to be the pinnacle of education, the last year before we choose what to do with our lives. But deciding what to do after high school can be difficult. With classes in full swing and college application deadlines coming up; many are left feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Ainslie Meyers, WHS Senior explains, “I just feel like my future is being thrown at me all at once.” From choosing a career path to picking schools to apply to, our future is on the line. Many are worried about making the right choice.

Based on a study by USA Today, about 82 percent of teens feel moderate to extreme stress during the school year. With the workload of senior year and the competitiveness of getting into college, that number is not surprising. Many WHS seniors have been feeling overwhelmed with the amount of work ahead of them. Kellie Gilluly explains “between senior projects, colleges essays and common app, senior year is going to be a lot of work.” But it’s not just college that has students stressing, it’s finding time to complete all the work senior year requires. Most students work or are involved in afterschool activities that take up most of their time. National Honors Society President, Ruedi Hauser, explains, “being involved in numerous activities after school is very time consuming and trying to stay on top of my school work can be stressful.” Like Ruedi, many kids are feeling the same way. By senior year many students have taken on leadership roles in clubs or sports which adds on the stress and time. But working on time man-

agement skills can help lessen the stress. Don’t over schedule the day, create realistic expectations and deadlines. Also planning ahead and prioritizing tasks can help as well. Taking time out of your busy schedule to have fun and relax is also a great way to relieve stress. Anything to take your mind off of school whether it’s; reading for pleasure, hanging out with friends or watching a movie. Eugene Tsang, WHS senior explains, “When I’m really stressed out I like to listen to music to take my mind off of it or hang out with my friends. After taking a break I feel like it’s easier to finish whatever I have to do.” Having a strong support network to fall back on when times get tough at school is critical to staying upbeat and maintaining a big picture perspective. Friends can be the best people to relieve your stress, but they can also be the reason behind the stress. Choose the friends that will be positive and supportive when the going gets tough. Having a good group of friends can help you maintain a healthy and enjoyable lifestyle.

FOR THE FALL BY JACOB GROSS Lifesstyle Editor

This season at Junk & Java, Alexis Tattersall has released the new fall menu featuring a specialty drink of her own creation. the Pumkin Java. This drink is made with real pumpkin pie filling mixed with sweetened condensed milk for taste and consistency. Starbucks’ famous Pumkin Spice Latte is filled with artificial flavors and preservatives, which destroys any nutrional value. Tattersall’s creation uses real pumpkin which is beneficial not only to the flavor of the drink but the nutritional qualities as well. Another pumpkin creation on the fall specials menu is a pumpkin affogato. This delectable dish incor-

porates a perfectly crafed shot of espresso brewed directly over house made pumpkin gelato. The gelato melts from the heat of the espresso, and creates a thick, creamy pumpkin drink which is traditionally enjoyed with a cappucino spoon. Non-pumpkin alternatives are also a feature of the seasonal drinks menu. Another big seller is the candy-corn cappucino. The traditional three-part coffee drink gets a twist when butterscotch and white chocolate flavors are added. The skillful way in which the baristas pour the drink gives it three different layers; white dark brown and white again, to make it look like a candy corn served in a clear mug. Another white chocolate fea-

tured drink on the menu this season is the Pumpkin Spice White Chocolate. This creation, another one of Tatterall’s is based off of a hot chocolate. Steamed milk and white chocolate are combined to make the base of a white hot chocolate. The “twist” comes through when Harney & Son’s decaffinated pumpkin spice tea is added to this mixture for a delicious, decaffinated drink. The final creation of the season, and perhaps the most popular, is the Pecan Pie Chai. Big Train Chocolate Chai and pecan pie flavor syrup are combined to create a sweet, chocolatey, nutty chai that can be served hot or iced. Junk & Java is proud of their creations and are open 6am-8pm everyday.

Natural Skin Care

BY ERICA TERRANOVA Opinion Editor

For many people, Proactive, Clean&Clear, as well as other products claiming to appeal to those with sensitive skin don’t always provide the outcome promised. In fact, a good majority of these products do the exact opposite of what they claim to do. They dry out the skin, cause irritation, and, as an unfortunate result, cause even more breakouts. Not only that, but skin care products can also cause irritations to your wallet. If you buy the cleanser, you absolutely must have the toner and moisturizing lotion to go with it. Ladies and gentlemen, these products are a lot of the same. They’re all products with Benzoyl Peroxide and/or Salicylic Acid, common solutions used in acne treatment. If you’re paying more for a skin care product, chances are you’re only getting a slightly larger concentration of one or both of these chemicals. As our society reaches out toward whole, natural alternatives to food, utensils, even clothing, it should also be a priority to find similar alternatives for skin care. These alternatives are all household items, they’re natural, and they’re more economical. The number one skin care tool you have to include in your skin care routine is olive oil. For centuries, olive oil has been used as a moisturizer and a cleanser. It’s also great as a hair mask, and a soak to strengthen nails. Many, including myself, use it as a makeup remover. Olive oil is gentle on the skin, and has amazing skinhealing properties. It’s fantastic for all skin types, hydrating

for dry skin, and actually helps control oil for those with oily skin. When you use drugstore skin care products, the chemicals in these products strip your skin of natural oils, drying your skin out. To combat this, your skin will produce MORE oil than normal to counteract the dryness. This is often the reason many teenagers have continually oily skin. Using olive oil will not cause breakouts. The molecules in olive oil are too big to fit into your pores, however, it is a magnet for dirt, grease, makeup and pollutants in your skin. Use a small amount (at least a teaspoon but no more than a tablespoon) and apply to wet skin with gentle, circular motions. It takes a little longer to rinse off, but the extra time is worth the results. Another amazing skin food is honey. Like olive oil, honey is also gentle on the skin and is nutritive for the skin as well. It’s important to get raw honey, otherwise the vitamins (A1, B1, B6, B12, C, D, and E) are processed out of it. It’s important to have a lot of these vitamins, especially vitamin C, which assists in cell growth, fighting free radicals which damage your skin, and repairing your skin overall. Because honey has a thicker consistency, it can be made into a face mask and even an exfoliant. Mixing raw cocoa powder or cinnamon with the honey, or even honey on its own can prove beneficial. Many start to see their skin glow after a few uses. Mixing honey and sugar make an excellent (but strong) exfoliator. Apply to wet skin, rubbing in gently. There are also various vegetables and fruits that have

positive effects on one’s skin. Tomatoes are loaded with vitamins, and have acids that aid in treating acne. Lemons are a natural skin brightener, they can help fade acne scars slightly, and give an overall glow to the skin. Both tomatoes and lemons can be cut in half, dipped in sugar, and used as an exfoliating scrub. Another natural exfoliant is cinnamon. Cinnamon promotes blood flow, and when used with oils has temporary skin plumping properties. Applying this mix of oil and cinnamon to one’s lips not only moisturizes and exfoliates, but causes a temporary plumping of the lips, as well as a tingling sensation. Beyond these examples, there are so many inexpensive, natural, safe options for skin care. A majority of these are sitting in your kitchen or pantry, barely used. Let’s be honest, though. It’s a little awkward at first rubbing olive oil onto your face, or making a scrub out of half a lemon. However, the benefits that your skin receives outweigh the odd nature of these practices. It’s also important to mention that these skin care tips don’t just apply to your face, they can be used elsewhere too! After washing your face with olive oil or coconut oil, you may notice your hands will feel much softer. Your teenage years are the most important for your skin, how you treat your skin today may affect how your skin looks years down the road. So, would you rather pay a bunch of extra money for an irritating chemical product, or save money and use completely natural products that yield better results?

Thrilling New Halftime Show

Fall Sports Overview TAYLOR BARESSE

HANNAH HEIGHTMAN staff reporter

staff reporter

It’s the beginning of another school year, and in Rhode Island, that means fall. But that is not all it means when it comes to high school. Fall means football! The sport is a phenomenon around the country; everybody loves football. Football is more than just a game though, especially at Westerly High School. Football is a united activity, that brings the Dawg Pound, the cheerleaders, and the marching band together as a high school unit. The marching band, however, has a few surprises up it’s sleeves this year. The halftime show coming out of the marching band this year was completely redesigned. It received a full makeover and became something the students of WHS had never really seen before. Previous to this year, the Westerly Marching Band show has been three songs and three individual features - a color guard feature, a dance line feature, and a band feature. However, the band has completely redesigned the show this year. Under the direction of Sarah Ferry the band took the field for the first time this year with a Michael Jackson tribute. Within the first measure, everyone was moving. Flags went up, and the dancers started with a crazy Jackson tribute. The band is bigger and better than they’ve been in quite a few years. There are still three pieces of music in this show. The Jackson show starts with a fun song, blasting “I Want You Back.” It’s the longest piece in the show, and the band starts off strong. With the end of “I Want You Back,” the band starts with a really cool vibe, the bass and the drumline jam to

As the new school year starts so does everyone’s favorite sports. Football and soccer are in full swing and girls’ volleyball and soccer have an exciting season ahead of them. New to Westerly High School are two foreign exchange students on the boys’ soccer team. Pedro Solero from Madrid has been playing soccer for four years and Alberto Rovello from Milan has been playing for eight. When asked how American soccer differs from European Pedro Solero, WHS junior, said, “It is very nice, it is very different… the American[s]…give a lot of importance to the physical condition and European[s] not that much.” Alberto Rovello, a WHS senior, agreed they pass the ball more in Italy. At the first Boys’ Soccer game, Alberto scored the only goal. Regarding the victory he said, “It is…exciting because you’re not use to having… classmates at the game and then they see you at school and say ‘Oh, you scored!’”. The team has been very welcoming and supportive of the new players since day one. Along with this, the Girls Soccer team is off to a great start. According to Mallory Hall-Thomsen, a WHS junior, the girls have been doing great. “We’ve won four games and lost three,” said Mallory. Girls’ volleyball has also been improving every single game. Senior, Julianna Morrone says, “As a team and as individuals we are improving every time we get touches on the ball”.

Photo by Julia Ferraro the beat of “Billie Jean.” The guard, the band, and the danceline wait a few counts and then everybody starts moving. The marching band is definitely taking a more traditional vibe, straying away from the feature idea and becoming a band that is an art form, and producing a moving, living product that snakes along the field. With the end of Billie Jean, the guard and danceline scatters and everyone falls and dies. As the drumline begins a feature, the guard and dance line begin to zombie, and the color guard actually has two pieces of equipment this year. When Thriller starts, the guard and danceline come to life and with the opening of the chorus, the dance line breaks into the iconic dance and the guards flags all leave their hands. The show ends just as

strong, with new flags for the color guard as the red silks wave, red and black, a cool, edgy tribute to Michael Jackson’s jacket in the Thriller video. Junior Sydney Iacoi says about the show, “I thought it was really good. It was definitely a new experience for the school.” The band is definitely taking a very new take on marching this year. Compared to last year and the past few years, the band has suddenly gone in a very new direction, and a lot of members of the band itself are very excited about the direction it’s travelling. After not having an annual band trip last year, everyone’s excited to have a new, fresh director and a retake on the show. The band is headed up to New York and New Jersey over April Vacation, and the band is definitely buzzing.

Senior Marley Casale, a member of the dance line, says “it’s definitely different than last year. We’ve come a long way, but it can be tough sometimes because it is so different. We all think we’ve improved a ton, though.” The band is much bigger than it was last year. They’re still pretty small, but the band is developing and growing larger every year, and Director Sarah Ferry is hoping for more and more yearly attendance as the years go on. This is definitely a new start for the Westerly High School Marching Band. The Westerly High School Marching Band has been an icon of Westerly High School for years, and this makeover could take the band a long way. The band is growing, it’s been a very big turnaround from the past two years. Time will only tell where the band will go from here.

With this positive mind set the girls all play a great game whether it is a win or loss. After a few games, the volleyball team has drawn in a crowd of their own. Each player has a number of supporters to cheer them on. “Our parents are very supportive,” said Morrone. Now that the football games have started it was no surprise the Dawg Pound was back and bigger than ever. From tailgating to bleeding blue, the class of 2015 is ready for the greatest season yet. Senior, Chad Raiche has organized a student barbeque in the junior parking lot before the home football games. Gathering the students together before the game contributes to the hype in the Dawg Pound. Football Captain Clayton Minnich says “The Dawg Pound has a huge part in our games, with all the energy and noise they make it hard for the other team to get their calls in”. Based off of the first few games, Minnich said the team is looking really good. Every year the team gets better and is constantly improving. “We started out a little rough but we are putting everything together nicely especially with the win last week,” said Minnich. As all the fall sports come into full swing, the school spirit is growing rapidly. With the Turkey Day Game on its way the team is getting pumped but still taking it one game at a time. Fall sports are off to a great start and will all hopefully have their best season yet.

FOOTBALL FIELD: GRASS VS. TURF QUINN CHAPPELLE Staff Reporter

Over the years, there has been a debate throughout Westerly: grass or turf? Currently, the main field is a grass field with sod but some people rather the school strip it and put in turf. Turf supporters advocate that the turf field will cost less, be free of pesticides, will not run down as easy, there are less injuries on turf and turf saves water. A turf field that is five years old looks the same as it was first put in. A point of note is that turf fields can be used for up to twelve years before replacing becomes a necessity. Some thoughts on the grass field - it makes Westerly High School look outdated compared to so many schools using a turf field. However, turf fields are a heat hazard. A Brigham Young University study explains the heat of a turf field is, on average, 37 degrees hotter than the air temperature. For example, if a team is practicing in the summer with a high of 83 degrees, playing on that field would be as if they were practicing in 120 degree weather. Additionally, there are concerns of the lead in the turf

soil, harmful chemicals, toxic run off, bacteria and how once you put in a turf field you cannot go back to grass. The cost of turf fields is likely to be as much as 700,000 dollars. The grass field also has some issues as well. Grass fields require more maintenance with lines and watering, pesticides are needed and more drastic injuries happen due to grass. Here at Westerly, there have been issues of the field being worn out which has affected the sports. When students cross for classes daily, you can see custodians mowing the quad and field. Cutting the grass takes time, effort and money that could be used elsewhere, possibly in athletics or academics. Over time, the price of grass field increases due to the amount of fine tuning it needs to be able to use. The activities that use the field are, but are not limited to, football, soccer, lacrosse, cheerleading, danceline, marching band and colorguard. The advantages of grass is that it is environmentally friendly, naturally cooler, repairs itself and there is no disease spreading. Instead of reaching extreme tempera-

tures, grass fields stay cooler and do not retain that heat. Ideas on the grass are that the grass is tradition, a key concept of Westerly High School. Grass fields have a reputation of them becoming muddy to a point that it becomes a danger to play on them. In an interview with two junior varsity soccer players, Ronan Murphy and Brendan Flood, they shared their personal opinions on the debate. “[Grass field] has terrible performance. The ball is slow until it hits a bump, so you can’t really find a pace with it.” Flood commented. Murphy stated “The ball does go faster on turf. That can be a good or a bad thing, depending on the speed of the teams and the game.”. Both Flood and Murphy agreed that the turf field would be worth it overall due to the benefits, but if the grass field is here to stay, “they should level it out” as a midway point. Incidentally, many student athletes worried about the difference in game and practice. The practice fields, for example - the quad and White Rock, are grass. Being unaccustomed to turf, next suddenly playing on it, could

Photo by Ainslie Myers have an effect on wins and losses. This raises the questions such as, “Should we get turf when all the negatives are unknown?”, “Should we get more turf fields?” and “Will all the athletics practice on

that field?” In November, there is a town meeting to discuss whether a turf field will be implemented for the 20152016 school year. As reported by the Westerly Sun, James Murano be-

lieves a new turf field will lead to a decrease in the overuse of the other town fields. When it comes down to the bare truth, we need to choose what advantages and disadvantages we will prefer to have for sports.

Is President Obama handling ISIS effectively? BY HANNAH HEIDTMAN

BY JOSEPH BRODEUR

Left

Right

ISIS is a rising threat in the Middle East, and is slowly and steadily growing. The United States’ main concern is where ISIS is located. Worried with the US is the rest of the world, with the likely exception of North Korea. As a terrorist group, they are slowly overtaking Iraq and Syria, setting up terror campaigns and attempting to conquer an international forum. They are dominating and threatening multiple nations around the world, and pulling in an unbelievable amount of revenue every day through hostage negotiations and a number of other methods. ISIS is quickly become more than just a small terrorist organization, turning into a legitimate threat not only to the United States but to other countries as well. Not long ago, Obama gave a speech addressing the United States’ course of action. After beheading an American man, the issue of ISIS really began to heat up, and it’s just getting worse in these countries, and becoming a bigger threat for the United States. The President announced during his speech that we would be operating air strikes against ISIS. Currently, it does seem like an intelligent course of action. Obama is certainly listening to the general public. After recently and successfully pulling troops out of Iraq and Syria, the last thing the American public wants right now is to send troops over to Iraq and Syria and put boots on the ground. Our troops are just getting home. While airstrikes are certainly a better course of action, I’m not entirely sure working with Assad, a dictator the United States is interested in putting out of power, is entirely logical either. Sure, the enemy of our enemy is friend certainly applies here, but dealing with Assad doesn’t seem rational or logical. There’s been recent talk of instituting a coalition in the Middle East, of neighboring Middle Eastern countries. After Obama proposed a coalition, the number of countries that expressed intrest was practically overwhelming. Europe and certain countries in the Middle East are willing to fight back against this terrorist threat. Not only do they threaten the health and safety of the United States, but to Europe as well, and most immediately they are proposing a threat to Iraq and Syria. ISIS calls themselves “The Islamic State,” and not only are they spewing bad names across the religion of Islam, they are raping women and children and killing men. The United States cannot fight them alone, however, and I think that forming a coalition of international forces is definitely the right course of action. True, the United States inserts itself into a lot of situations it doesn’t belong within, but this terrorist organization is becoming far too great a threat to overlook and remain uninvolved. As much as I’d love to say that the United States shouldn’t be involved, I honestly don’t believe that I’d feel safe if we weren’t. Sitting back and doing nothing against this organization feels like the wrong option. Joining the coalition, however, is an option that’s appealing. Not only are we not alone in the fight against ISIS, but the chances of us coming out on top are higher. Obama has come out multiple times and stated that under no circumstances will the United States put boots on the ground in Iraq or Syria. In my opinion, this is a really practical move. The majority of the American public is definitely opposed to putting boots on the ground, myself included. The idea of air strikes makes many people nervous, though. Some of the American public is definitely concerned about air strikes triggering a larger and more aggressive response from ISIS, especially since they’ve been going on for a few weeks now but they don’t seem to have largely affected the terrorist organization. America is nervous. The world is nervous. If there’s one thing about ISIS that I am sure about, it’s that we must tread carefully for a while. At the moment, ISIS is unpredictable. We must highly consider the correct course of action before we make any irrational decisions. Only time will tell when it comes to this terrifying organization, and the steps the United States takes in the next few months must be slow and calculated to avoid war.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, known also as ISIS or ISIL, remains the domineering dispute of United States foreign policy in the Middle East, as President Obama considers what measures must be taken to combat the terrorist organization. As contrasted to the hysteria rallied under the Bush Administration preceding the Iraq War, President Obama does merit some credit in assessing the thin concentration of present threats. However, this thin concentration cannot justly warrant a total military counteroffensive currently. On the eve of September 11th this year, the 13th anniversary of Al-Qaeda’s devastating attacks on the World Trade Center, the President reaffirmed his promise to defend the American people against terrorist threats. Still, this lends the fundamental question: Has ISIS autonomously targeted the United States, as a national identity, to strike? “Press coverage of ISIS often ignores the fact that, in the past, the group has not targeted the American homeland,” reported correspondent Peter Beinart. “Jihadist groups, even monstrous ones, don’t inevitably go after the United States.” Any declaration of war against such an organization would quickly trigger the transition of attacks within our borders. This apprehensive action would fail to remove the very impetus for further extortions spared America in withholding her involvement, as imparted by the beheadings of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff. In any case, one must remember ISIS upheld these killings as a response to American airstrikes. This is not to say the United States should allow for fearful subjugation, but rather, should look beyond these threats to the real controversy of the matter presented therein. While our nation has often sought to eradicate the very object of worldwide grievance, in times of contemplating war, this definition of absolute justice changes greatly. Former State Department counterterrorism coordinator Daniel Benjamin called the ISIS threat a “farce,” with “members of the cabinet and top military officers all over the place describing the threat in lurid terms that are not justified.” All citizens and governments are inherently obliged to work for the avoidance of war in an international coalition for peace and security. The Catechism of the Catholic Chrch addresses this issue best, “…as long as the danger of war persists and there is no international authority with the necessary competence and power, governments cannot be denied the right of lawful self-defense, once all peace efforts have failed.” In view of this, President Obama must inquire the following: Is the damage inflicted lasting, grave, and certain? Have all other means of terminating this aggression yet been exhausted? Are there serious prospects of success? Will the use of arms yield greater destruction than that to be eliminated? In this respect, our Commander-in-Chief falsely assessed the domestic threat of hostile onslaught. While remaining a destructive force in the Middle East, ISIS poses no direct threat to the United States, but rather, intends to remain free of its concern. Regarding alternate courses of action, lending diplomatic means of self-defense to those subjugated states might serve to ease America’s conscience while still safe-guarding her own people. As President Obama asserted, “…this is not our fight alone. [For while] American power can make a decisive difference…we cannot do for Iraqis what they must do for themselves…” This proves a most prudent verdict, bearing in mind America’s ruinous history of intervention within the last two centuries. American involvement in any form will only serve to escalate ISIS involvement inversely. Hence, every evaluation of these conditions for moral legitimacy must be made for the common good of the American people. After all, who is to say 9/11 will not repeat itself if we provoke such terrorist activity? America must inquire what real outlook it has to fully eliminate this threat. She cannot and should not without full international collaboration bear the burden of sacrifice on behalf of the whole global community. Regarding the President’s aerial agenda against ISIS, the destruction of whole populated regions must be regarded as criminal, and hence impermissible as a means of serving justice. American principle rises beyond justifying the ends by any means. Yet Obama persists, “If left unchecked, these terrorists could pose a growing threat beyond that region — including to the United States.” But in truth, countless elements could prove ominous threats to the United States, none of which have thus far. Still America agonizes over this “comprehensive and sustained counter-terrorism strategy,” for which we now wager all situational control and the threat of America’s own security. Now is that really justice?

Things getting ruff between the Dawg Pound and band This year’s Westerly High School Marching Band is significanlty larger than it has been in the recent past. As a result, the band needs more bleacher space. Unfortunately, this has caused a rift between the band and the Dawg Pound. Now that the band has expanded, they require more room to hold all the participants. They cannot expand to the left because a large pole is in the way. It would also diminish the sound quality. Since its recent creation, the Dawg Pound has occupied the space just to the right of the press box. Not only is this space a good vantage point, but it also was meant to encourage school spirit by creating unity between the Dawg Pound and the band. The band’s attempt to move to the right has led to a quarrel between the leaders of musical talent and school spirit. Out of this quarrel, a compromise was reached. The band, the colorguard, and the dance line have been combined into one larger section, as opposed to the two sections that existed in the past. This new section now occupies a small portion of what used to be Dawg Pound territory. The compromise is a solution in the short term, but it wont work in the long run. Both the band and the Dawg Pound are simply too squished. Both groups need growing room. The Barker’s recommended solution is that the Dawg Pound relocates, shifting left to occupy the section directly in front of the press box. The band would then expand to the right, occupying the

Photo by Barker Staff entire right hand section of the bleachers. Both groups will have room to breathe. The only obstacle to this is the stubborness of the Dawg Pound leadership. They are clinging to a tradition that has only recently been established. They should consider this option carefully and think about the advantages of this position. This would be prime real estate, right on the fifty yard line. There is more space. The larger space would allow the Dawg Pound to expand - not only in breathing room but also in numbers. Increasing their numbers has been a goal since their creation. They would also be underneath the press box. Being underneath the press box allows the

Dawg Pound to more easily hear announcements. But most importantly this move still allows the Dawg Pound to interact with the band but it also puts the Dawg Pound in more direct contact with the fans and spectators. This will foster hype and more energy to help motivate the football team, which is the goal shared by both the Dawg Pound and the marching band. If the need for this change is ignored the Dawg Pound and band will inevitably have furthur conflicts with one another and will distract from the initial goal of both groups, which is to promote the football team. C’mon Dawg Pound -- live up to your goal to unite the school in support of the football team.

Elections from page 1 jobs she created were based on out of state manufacturers and firms. Gina has also stated that she wishes to start investing state pensions in companies that distribute firearms in Rhode Island. Although Rhode Island doesn’t hold any large firearm manufacturers, the taxes of those that do exist greatly help with the states taxes. Gina’s perspective on Rhode Island’s education relies on strengthening the bonds between Rhode Island’s Community College and companies. Gina also wishes to create scholarship funds that will be accessible to state residents. As for the (k-12) school systems, Gina will provide the classrooms with the latest technologies and equipment. Gina has a publicly known plan to create a clean energy board where their objective will be to inform the public on green behavior. Allan Fung’s plan for the state is to create compromises with Democrats in the best inter-

est of the public, a strategy called governing that has been eclipsed by the ignorance by most political figures. “Government can do one of two things, put hurdles in your way or take them away.” His work in reducing taxes and negotiating pensions for state and town employees earned him an 82% approval rating in Cranston. Fung plans to apply the same principles to Rhode Island if he is elected Governor. In regards to the tax issue Allan has promoted a $200 million tax reduction package. This package will also aid local businesses that are trudging through hard times. This package will make Rhode Island one of the friendliest business states in the Northeast. The simple idea could start a chain reaction that will help Rhode Island’s economy not just crawl out of trouble but instead rise like a phoenix from the ashes. Alan also plans to reduce the sales tax through this idea to 6.25% after his first year in office. His estimated goal for

Scrapbook from page 3 his sales tax reduction is 5.5% by the fourth year, tied with Maine and one of the lowest in the Northeast. When it comes to education, Fung believes heavily that the education of the State’s youth is the best way to create new jobs and lower the regional debt. Allan plans to repeal the one education board system. He plans to replace it with a two education board system where (k-12) are covered by one board and college and secondary schooling isn’t forgotten. These plans combined carry Allan Fung’s hope to restore this state to a respectable status and drop the unemployment rate under 8.7%. As Election Day approaches the residents of the state should inform themselves on the positions these two candidates represent and their different plans because history has shown nothing is more important to a democracy than a well informed voter.

Recently, the sophomore class received approval from Mr. Ruscito to host an Autumn Festival. The community event will take place on October 25 from 12-4 pm, October 26th being the rain date. The event will have food stations, basket

raffles, a bouncy house, obstacle courses, arts and crafts for children, and much more. Connie Chen, Class President stated, “This event will be a chance for families to enjoy the beautiful fall”. This is an excellent opportunity to welcome friends and family to the Westerly High School campus for an entertaining afternoon. Each of the past and upcoming events offers the oppor-

tunity to bond with fellow classmates. The community is welcome to a majority of these fundraisers which in turn will benefit each class as funding towards future occurrences. Share Bulldog pride by purchasing or making an appearance to each of the fundraisers. Let’s show the community how dedicated Westerly High School students are towards our public events.

information about the new details of the security system to prevent further attacks on the White House.
