FIRST LOOK “I was so excited before our first look that when I finally saw him, so many emotions swept over me. I will never forget that moment we were able to share together; there are no words to describe it.� The First Look has its origin from the arranged marriage, when weddings were more of a business deal between two families. The family of the bride kept the groom from seeing the bride for fear that the groom might think her unattractive and change his mind, casting shame onto the bride and her family. Today, many couples choose to have the First Look to create and cherish that one moment before the ceremony when they both get to see each other for the first time and share an intimate moment before all the craziness begins.

THE RECEPTION Both Alisha and Taylor were very involved in the wedding and spent a lot of time researching vendors. The result was an elegant and chic wedding for 250 guests at The Westin Riverwalk Hotel with delicious signature margaritas, striking striped tablecloths, personalised “Mr.” and “Mrs.” plaques and low white and purple ombre centrepieces that ran the entire length of the tables. The stunning gold sequinned tables also held the tiered wedding cake and rainbow macarons. “The reception was where our personalities really came out!”

timeless look Larae and Raymund chose a season-less neutral palette – muted tones with a pop of elegance in an unexpected metallic hue. A timeless selection of classic colours that never go out of style. “All entourage participants were given special gifts as a token of gratitude for their time, love and support. Guests received chocolate praline boxes and a photobooth was set up where they were each given a flipbook. “We spent a lot of time personalising the wedding to give it a personal touch. Each and every detail of the wedding, from conceptualisation to execution, was our own.”

THE CEREMONY Completed in 1891, San Sebastián Church is noted for its architectural features. It’s an example of the revival of gothic architecture in the Philippines, and the only all-steel church or basilica in Asia. Larae looked effortlessly elegant walking down the aisle in her Monique Lhuillier long trail gown and cathedral veil. With all eyes on her, even the groom could not contain his emotions. “There was a quick rain shower during the ceremony when the priest was preaching the homily. We felt the presence of the Lord as he showered us with His blessings.”

tanarimba, janda baik About an hour away from bustling Kuala Lumpur is Tanarimba, a lovely, lush resort nestled snugly amidst the fresh greenery and rustic pine trees of Janda Baik, Malaysia. Built out of wood with beautiful floor-to-ceiling glass windows, Tanarimba feels like a great hall in a mansion. The couple wanted their guests to not only enjoy the wedding, but to also really take time to relax and admire the beautiful surroundings. “We wanted our guests to make the most of this space and enjoy themselves, away from the hectic pace and distractions of the city, even if it was just for a few hours.�

THE RECEPTION Tanarimba definitely puts you at ease, with its high ceilings and gorgeous views. THE CEREMONY The wedding ceremony is one of the most sacred and meaningful parts of the whole wedding. It was the main focus of this wedding, where about 320 people and even some families from Singapore gathered at City Harvest Kuala Lumpur to share this moment with the couple. The wedding was pretty emotional, including the speeches, but took a playful turn as families and friends mingled during the lunch reception that followed. The dĂŠcor featured fun typography and text for the candy booth and dessert table, while the ice cream man proved to be one of the favourites.

WEDDING CAKES “Instead of one, we had two cakes. We just wanted a lot of variety on the dessert table. More than something pretty, we wanted something delicious. My sister made the cake topper.”
VINTAGE CANS “We collected a lot of condensed milk cans that we wrapped with vintage design labels. We used them for almost everything from the flowers along the aisle to the reception for cutlery and straws.”
VINTAGE SIGNS “We’d actually seen these around a lot. At first, we couldn’t figure out how to trace words onto the wood. We searched online for tutorials and figured it out quite quickly.” {tutorial}
Bride’s tips
The bride and her team share with us DIY tutorials and where they got the rest of their gems. Multipurpose invitations “We found vintage posters and made eight different postcard designs for our invitations. We understand that most people don’t keep wedding invitations, so we asked our guests to write messages to us on the postcards and bring them along on the wedding day.”
FOR THE LITTLE ONES “We actually packed goodie bags for our flowergirls and pageboys. It was a little surprise for them when they went to their seats – some snacks to keep them occupied during the ceremony. I found this Coke keychain that also functioned as a pen. It was something for them to keep as a memento.”

BRIDAL CAR “We bought the ‘Fetchin’ My Bride’ sign online and tied recycled Coke cans to the back of our bridal car. We couldn’t drive it around like that but it was just so adorable and it fit our theme.” {tutorial}

W
hen it comes to LEGO ®, we can think of no greater inspiration than this multimedia collaboration between hyper-real Australian photographer Dean West and LEGO® sculptor Nathan Sawaya. We are so fortunate that Dean took some time to share with us
his thoughts behind this project. This is not exactly weddingrelated but we believe that great work inspires greatness. IN PIECES is a series of carefully crafted images with LEGO ® sculptures. Much like the assembling of pixels in a digital image, thousands of bricks are glued together to form objects. From a distance, the imagery appears entirely photographic, however as the viewer begins to digest it, each work reveals the brick-by-brick fabricated construction. What inspired the idea of including LEGO ® sculptures in your work? In 2009, I started to research what my next photo project would be and I thought it would be interesting to combine LEGO ® into my photography. With experience compositing different elements from many different locations in my work, it seemed that the brick-by-brick constructions would seamlessly fit into my layered pixel-by-pixel photographs. I ended up buying a box of grey LEGO® bricks that I never did open. The problem was, having never played much with LEGO ® as a kid, I had no idea where to start! I started researching and came across Nathan Sawaya’s human forms pulling the chest open with bricks falling out onto the ground, and it really stopped me in my tracks. I emailed Nathan with a basic nebulous concept and all he replied was, ‘I love it – when are you coming to New York.’ With nothing to lose, two weeks later I was on a plane to New York to discuss the potential collaboration.

How long does each picture take, from conceptualising to the finished piece? We decided that we would take a reconnaissance road trip together across the US, from California to Arizona, and then up to Nevada and Utah. From there we were able to develop the imagery aesthetic and really get to know each other. We compiled references, from Edward Hopper to the American Postcard, so we had an idea what we were looking for. The time spent travelling really set a great foundation for us to become comfortable in expressing our ideas and allowed us to define what it was we really

wanted to say. There are seven images in the series and each photo and sculpture is available in an edition of seven. The work took three years in total to complete. Is there a particular message behind these photos? The series really is about how we construct identity – what decisions have we made or not made to end up where we end up.

e wouldn’t have guessed that this couple is from Malaysia, especially when you see them cuddled up with a hot cup of coffee or spending time together at the famous Peggy Porschen Cakes. They look absolutely at home. The LEGO® setup is so adorable. We remember how as little kids we would put together these toy bricks to build our
dream house. Here, it looks like they’ve built themselves a Volkswagen Kombi instead of a house, all ready for the adventure ahead of them.

Transparent Chiavari chairs and an aisle lined with dense white rose petals, plus an adorable flowergirl to top it all off, made this a truly stunning wedding.
The LEGO ® bricks gave it a fun twist and added a touch of the couple’s personality, while still fulfilling the bride’s dream of having a beautiful wedding. From the bridesmaids’ heels that were made with LEGO ® to the groom’s bow tie, this wedding was just too creative to be ignored.
