ful spin on regular 5k races. Runners are showered with an array of colors at various color stations throughout the course; each runner started off with a packet of dyed corn starch. Just before the start signal sounded, all the contestants tossed their packets into the air and a cloud of rainbow descended onto the runners. Everyone’s white shirts were layered in reds, blues, and greens, but that was not the only twist. After each bridge,

the participants were again showered in colors. Finally, at the end as each runner finished the race they were covered one last time. “I had a blast at the color run. It was so fun being able to participate in something so different and be on the other end of things for a change,” Bailey Walters, a tech member of the drama department said. “I’m really glad that we were given the opportunity to have such a fun fundraiser.”

Why such a mess? Construction causes havoc at OGHS

By: Lucy Pruitt @lucylu_too Staff Reporter

It has been awhile since Oak Grove High School has looked as beautiful as it once did since the tornado in 2013, but recently students and staff have even found themselves in need of car washes and rain boots because of the unavoidable mess of the campus. With construction of the new auditorium at the last stage, work continues on completion of the new field house. It was time to get the permanent electric service to the building, and architect David Landry approached the utility company (Pearl River Valley EPA) to get this done.

PRVEPA wanted OGHS to allow them to connect all the transformers on campus. At first the school district refused, then PRVEPA offered to do the work for a small concession while also running the wires to the new field house. What once was a $122,000 project would now only cost the district $10,000. That sounded like a great deal to the school district, and it was. Until the trenching tore up water lines, sewer lines, sprinkler lines, power to some lights and who knows exactly what else. Coupled with the mess that the trenching and boring left, it did not appear to be a good deal for the school at all. When the architect and school board approached the

utility company, they were told the work was completed and the county would help clean it up. After multiple meetings with the school board and their attorney, work on consecutive weekends by district Maintenance Director Dennis Steele and the district’s architect, PRVEPA agreed to take responsibility for restoring the property where they put the lines underground back to the original condition, successfully avoiding a lawsuit. There probably will not be car washes for the student body, but one day the campus will be beautiful again. Of course, there is a new girls’ gym/volleyball facility just beginning construction, so the Warriors may have to wait until that facility is complete.

One of Oak Grove’s most impressive competition records belongs to Oak Grove’s speech and debate team. With practices commencing in the earliest days of the school year and on until summer for some, Warrior Speech and Debate team members compete in the two categories of speech and interpretation and debate events in order to garner a lump sum of sweepstakes points: the higher the placing, the more points. Walking into the statewide tournament, the speech and debate team sported an undefeated record and left the tournament as state champions. The first leg of the tournament began on April 18 at Millsaps College for Congressional debate where Oak Grove High School won three of the top six rankings out of some sixty competitors, thus gaining a healthy lead over the other 18 schools from around the state competing for the state championship title. One week after State Congress, the second leg of the state tournament began. “We had done well all year, but we knew things can always be different at State, and so we worked hard and hoped for the best,” said sophomore, Trey Wallace. After almost a straight week’s worth of practice, the team sat in Ridgeland High School’s auditorium waiting for the awards show to begin. With their own coach, Shane Cole, announcing awards on stage, Warrior Speech and Debate members were announced having finaled in events across the board, but there were six new state champions from Oak Grove High School: Alyssa Bass, 11, in Expository Speaking, Jermaine Van Buren, 11, and Kenneth Eaton, 12, in Duo interpretation, Jillian Walters and Evan Woods, 12, in Duet Interpretation, Lucia Lang, 12, in Original Oratory, and Kenneth Eaton, 12, in Dramatic Interpretation. Warrior Speech and Debate won first place overall, first place in overall speech and interp events and second place in overall debate events. The team won 24 sweepstakes points above the runner up for the state title making their victory an ideal way to top off the team’s undefeated in-state season.

Lady Warrior golf brings home first ever state title By: Jonathan Brent @jonathanlebrent Staff Reporter

A

fter two days, 36 holes, and 313 strokes of golf in Vicksburg this past Monday and Tuesday, the state champion title was still up for grabs. It was the next hole that determined who would be the champions, and the Oak Grove Lady Warrior Golf Team came out victorious. The Oak Grove Lady Warrior Golf Team, coached by Drew Causey, consists of freshman Macaleigh Mancuso, sophomore Keista Elder, and senior Meredith Monroe. The three girls traveled to Clear Creek Golf Course on Monday May 4 to take part in Day 1 of the 2 day State Tournament at Clear Creek Golf Course, hosted by Warren Central. The tournament was composed of 49 girls from more than 15 schools

across the state of Mississippi in the Class III Tournament. On Day 1, Elder finished with an 18-hole score of 76, good enough for third best on the day out of all 49 competitors. Monroe’s 18-hole score tallied up at 85, tied for eighth on for day one. The freshman Mancuso finished day 1 with a score of 96 strokes, good enough to place in the top 20 for the day. By rule, the two best scores for the Warriors, Elder and Monroe, give them their team score for day one. The Warriors finished with a day 1 score of 159, good enough for a one stroke lead in the tournament ahead of St. Martin. On day 2 of the tournament, both the Lady Warriors and St. Martin shot better. Elder shot a 72, Monroe shot an 82 and Mancuso shot a 105. These scores gave the Warriors a day 2 score of 154. St. Martin’s day 2 score ended up at 153 strokes. The two days tallied up for a tie between the

two schools at a two day total score of 313 each. The rules state that in the event of a tie, the schools that are tied will play in a sudden death playoff hole with two girls from each team until the tie is broken and a state champion is determined. With that, Elder and Monroe teed up the Par 5 Hole 1 at Vicksburg’s Clear Creek with hopes of bringing home a state championship on their 37th hole of the week. The two both birdied the Par 5, giving the Lady Warriors a playoff hole score of 8. Both St. Martin girls parred the hole, giving them a playoff hole score of 10 strokes and giving the Warriors their first ever state championship in the sport. “I feel honored to play with two great golfers, a great coach, and an even more amazing God. This season has been one that I’ll remember forever. God has truly blessed this team with talent and athleticism, and I’m thankful to

have been a part of such an amazing accomplishment,” Mancuso said. The Lady Warriors will look to defend their first ever state title next spring.

proud of the eight members of his team who qualified for the south state tournament. The girls team’s story was much the same as the boys at the regional tournament: sophomore Aubrie Ware and junior Aly Abel placed second and fourth in the 3200 meter event respectively, sophomore Sinclair Green placed fourth in the 800 meter event as well as second in the 1600 meter event, junior Laura Spiers placed fourth in the triple jump, and senior Madison Johns won second place in the high jump event. These girls would advance to the south state tournament. At the south state tournament

held at Gulfport High School on Saturday, May 1, the Warriors were up against teams from Brandon, Ocean Springs, Meridian, Gulfport High, Jim Hill, Terry, Provine, Harrison Central, D’iberville, and their classic rivals, the Petal Panthers. The teams knew that they had their work cut out for them, but they were determined to leave everything out on the track, which is exactly what they did. Bayley Peoples placed sixth in the 3200 meter and the 1600 meter events, and Aubrie Ware placed fifth in the 3200 meter event. Sinclair Green placed fifth in the 1600 meter and the 800 meter races.

Trent Parker came in fifth in the pole vault. Xavier Daniels won first place in the 800 meter event, and Zachary Fielder won fourth place in the 3200 meter race. Madison Johns also placed second in the high jump event. These three elite athletes will be representing the Warriors at the state tournament on Saturday, May 9, in Pearl, Mississippi. After he found out that he qualified for state, Fielder said, “I couldn’t believe it. I was so happy! I’m excited to represent my school in the state tournament, and I’m ready to go out there and compete with these talented run-

Lady Warrior Softball: Lady Warriors fall in playoffs despite determination; season ends early

By: Samantha Papp @samantha_papp Staff Reporter

On April 29, the Lady Warriors fastpitch softball team played its last game of the 2015 season. After defeating Biloxi in the play-in round of playoffs, Oak Grove advanced to face Harrison Central in the first round of playoffs. The Lady Warriors defeated Harrison Central in the first game of the best-of-three series but eventually fell to the Rebelettes, thus concluding Oak Grove’s season. Despite their season ending early, Oak Grove players proved their determination to succeed as they undoubtedly played

their best games of the season during these playoff games. Because the Lady Warriors ended their regular season second place in their district, they had to play in the play-in round of playoffs on April 24 and 25. Oak Grove traveled to Biloxi on the 24 to play the first game and defeated the Indians with a score of 8-1. Senior pitcher/second baseman Kristen Martin guided the Lady Warriors to victory on the pitching mound, and Oak Grove capitalized on Biloxi’s pitching with nine hits. Martin and junior right fielder Katelyn Carmichael took the lead in that game, each with 3 runs batted in (RBIs). The next day, Oak Grove took on Biloxi at home. Sophomore

pitcher Heather Stanley started in the circle, and Martin came in on relief in the third inning. Jourdan Jones, junior left fielder, led the team at the plate, going 4-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Oak Grove eventually defeated Biloxi with a score of 17-7, concluded by a two-RBI walk-off double from junior designated hitter Presleigh Bryant. After defeating the Indians, the Lady Warriors faced Harrison Central at home for the first round of playoffs on April 28. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning, when junior third baseman Carly Crawford smacked a walk-off homerun to end the game. The next day, Oak Grove traveled to Harrison Central in hopes of concluding the series with a win; however, the Lady Warriors lost the second game of the series and were forced to play a third, decisive game, which they also lost. Hopefully we can perform this well at state too.” Both Coach Mckenzie and Coach Michelle Sisson, the coach of the girls team, were extremely proud of their qualifiers. These three have worked hard everyday to improve, and they are about to face more talented runners than they have all season. The three qualifiers feel that their coaches and their training this season have prepared them well, and they are excited to compete at the state tournament.

New album falls from the Cloud By: Casey Ford @caseym_ford Staff Reporter

A

mong the many talented musicians of Oak Grove High School is senior Cameron Cloud. Cloud’s interest in music and in writing, particularly, began at an early age. “I’ve been writing music since sixth grade. I just had a lot of songs I wanted to share, to impact others in some way. Lately, I’ve been trying to find my originality in being able to play different styles of music all centered around a pop/singer-songwriter vibe,” Cloud said. For Cloud, music has always been a way to relate to others, to appeal to listeners from any and every walk of life. That desire to create an ex-

perience his audience connects to has come to fruition in his debut album, Falling. The album’s title, while holding personal significance to Cloud, is very much open to interpretation. The same goes for each of the ten songs featured. “The whole record tells a story, but not just mine. I hope people will look at it in a way that relates to their personal stories-whether that’s falling into love, out of love, into new opportunities, into a new chapter of life, growing up, etc. It doesn’t matter. I’m hopeful listeners will appreciate the versatility of each track and the album as a whole,” Cloud explained. Featuring a range of musical genres, including a remixed version of one song, “Replay,” Falling is sure to please those with every musical preference. The Falling project began as a friendship formed between

ELIZABETH MAGEE ARTWORK

Cloud and college student Vincent McMurtery. McMurtrey, a music production major at the University of Southern Mississippi, began working as an intern at Cloud’s church and ultimately agreed to record Cloud at USM’s studio. The recording

process was a growing experience for both McMurtrey and Cloud, who wanted to gain some credibility in the music industry by having tangible evidence of his efforts. “I wanted to be able to hold an album in my hand and say ‘I made this. It took a lot of

stress and time and effort, but I made it, and it is something I can be proud of.’ I wanted to have something to share with the school and this community before I leave for college, in hopes that those people will help spread the word, and I will have had some musical influence in Hattiesburg,” Cloud said. While this journey has certainly brought its battles, Cloud insists God has carried him through every step of the project. After many months of overcoming every obstacle imaginable, Cloud is finally finished recording and hoping to release Falling in late May or early June, only a few short weeks away. “I’m so thankful for the support I’ve received from everyone while recording the album, and I still can’t believe this has become a reality. The way I’ve already been welcomed into the music community is such a blessing, and I could not be more excited about this opportunity,” Cloud exclaimed. Falling will soon be available on iTunes or from Cloud himself, for $10.00

FULL HOUSE BECOMES FULLER

Spinoff of 90s sitcom to debut on Netflix By: Alyssa Bass @alyssatrechelle Staff Reporter

hen John Stamos wasn’t endorsing yogurt, he was apparently working on something that would revive our childhood memories. On April 21, Full House fans received news that made them say, “Have mercy!” Stamos, who played Uncle Jesse in Full House, announced on Jimmy Kimmel Live that Netflix would be streaming a 13 episode spin off of the

popular sitcom that aired in the late 80’s and early 90’s called Fuller House. Stamos also announced that he will be co producing with Jeff Franklin and guest starring on the show. While Full House was centered around three men raising children, Fuller House has the same concept instead reversed. The show will be centered around the adventures of Kimmy Gibbler (played by Andrea Barber) and Stephanie Tanner (played by Jodie Sweetin) as they help D.J. Tanner (played by Candace Cameron Bure) juggle her two kids and one on the way. Sadly, D.J. has suffered the same fate as her

THE AGE OF

ADALINE

Lively’s new film a timeless classic

By: Jenna Clair Lee @jenta12 Staff Reporter

T

here are three truths when it comes to romantic drama movies: there will always be a point during the movie in which the female viewer is envious of the female lead; there will always be at least one inappropriate scene that one would not want to watch in the presence of her parents; and Nicholas Sparks has dominated this genre for over a decade. Age of Adeline, a new romantic drama, proves all of these things to be false. Rather than causing viewers to be envious of her wistful romantic adventures, Adeline Bowman (Blake Lively) inspires viewers to carry themselves with grace and dignity, just as she does. Contrary to the mainstream romantic

movies, Adeline and her love interest, Ellis (Michiel Huisman), have both an emotional connection and a physical attraction and keep their displays of affection to a respectable and sweet minimum. While Nicholas Sparks is the king of romantic dramas, writer Salvador Paskowitz and director Lee Toland Krieger have taken a fresh approach to the sometimes predictable genre and have staked their claim as writers and directors who deserve more credibility. The movie begins with the introduction of Adeline Bowman, a beautiful young woman with an elegant and regal air. Adeline marries a handsome engineer and has a daughter. A few years later, Adeline’s husband is killed and shortly after, Adeline herself has a bad car accident. By a fictitious biological explanation and incredible special effects, Adeline survives the car accident and is

father; she is now a widow. Fans never saw Bure’s character D.J. get married when Full House was on the air, but they’re hoping that her late husband was not D.J.’s longtime boyfriend Steve, so actor Scott Weinger’s character will be able to return on the spin off as D.J.’s boyfriend once again. This raises the questions of who is confirmed to be coming back for the spin off alongside Stamos, Sweetin, Bure, and Barber. Stamos is attempting to get the rest of the former cast on board to make guest appearances on the spin off, but also for a one hour reunion special before the first episode.

Lori Louglin (Aunt Becky), Bob Saget (Danny Tanner), and Dave Coulier (Joey Gladstone) are in negotiations. Loughlin said, “The only thing is, they only made deals with half the cast, but not the other half. I think we would all like to come back if the powers that be are fair to all of us. We want to be there. We want to come back; it’s up to them.” But what about MaryKate and Ashley Olsen who both played Michelle Tanner? When asked about the spinoff, Ashley said she was with her TV-dad recently and never spoke of it. Mary-Kate said she was surprised she hadn’t

brought from death to life as a permanently 28-year-old woman. Adeline begins changing her identity and moving around often, so as to live a quiet, undetected life and to avoid any FBI agents that have become suspicious of her extended existence. Along the way, she makes friends, falls in love, and eventually has to leave the life she has created in search for a new one, leaving only her aging daughter to know her whereabouts. In her 107th year of existence, Adeline meets a charming philanthropist named Ellis. After fighting off his attention for a while, Adeline eventually allows herself to become interested in Ellis, enough so that she attends his parent’s wedding anniversary party with him for a weekend. Ironically, Ellis’ father (Harrison Ford) recognizes her from his past and eventually figures out her secret. Adeline then has to make a decision whether or not to tell Ellis of her condition. Adeline’s next choices spoil too much of the plot for me to reveal in this review, but I assure you, it is worth seeing. The casting for this film could not have been more perfect. Blake Lively carries herself with so much class and grace, and her character exudes sophis-

tication and gentleness. Michiel Huisman delivers a charming performance as Ellis and gives the audience something to want for Adeline - true love without limits. With sad moments, sweet

heard from Stamos regarding the show. However, the twins did tell Women’s Wear Daily that they would consider making an appearance, which is shocking considering that they have been assumed to be under a rock for the last three years while pursuing their careers in fashion. Hopefully, they’ll say, “You got it, dude!” to Stamos and complete the family everyone grew to love.

moments, funny moments, and happy moments, this movie mixes mystery, romance, and elegance to create an overall spectacular film.

FINAL FAREWELL editor

Hellos are generally sweeter than goodbyes, and though the “real world” seems to be very sweet, unfamiliarity can turn the sweet goodbye to tardies and dress code into a bitter goodbye to community and home. For me and I assume for most, the goodbye to Oak Grove High School, as cliched as it may be, is indeed bitter sweet. I’m saying goodbye to days of walking the halls with students and teachers that continually showed me kindness. Goodbye to eating lunch in the choir room and swapping boy stories with Ms. Sisson. Goodbye to Mr. Bound’s “how we doin, Taylor?” and goodbye to the morningly Warrior acronym. As I go throughout my life, the lessons I learned as a Warrior are ones that I will carry with me wherever I may go. The friendships I have made are some that I pray last me a lifetime. I would not be who I am today without the blessings the Lord has given me through Oak Grove High School. So as my senior year comes to a close, I keep in mind that all the best greetings are hellos. Though technically this is my goodbye, I like to think of it as a hello to being on my own. Hello to a new place, new people, and new opportunities. Change is foreign. Change is strange, but change is good. So instead of leaving this school with a goodbye, I leave saying hello to Mississippi State University and thank you to Oak Grove High School. Thank you for fond memories that I cherish, not so fond memories that learned from, and experiences that have well prepared me for this “real world” that so quickly approaches.

Hugh Ford - that I’m going to be filthy rich and come back to the school to rub it in all my mean teachers’ faces. Jonathon Nguyen - that Isaac Nguyen will become the president at the age of 26. Ali Biedenharn - that Ronni Chadwell will have at least 20 cats. Michaela Smith - that Rieder will still be awesome. David Chapman - that Ms. Welch will still be teaching calculus. Allec Willis - that Will Broome will owe me money.

FINAL FAREWELL editor

J.M Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, once wrote, “Never say goodbye because goodbye means going away and going away means forgetting.” As much as I want to say, “So long, OGHS,” I don’t think it would be a very good idea. This seems like it would mean wishing away all of the lessons I’ve learned and memories and friendships that I’ve made. I don’t want to say goodbye to Andrea Clark’s dry wit or to Ms. Welch’s cheesy math jokes. And I most definitely don’t want to say goodbye Fridays at the Sisson house when we make cookies and watch movies. Oak Grove has left me with lessons learned and relationships with friends and teachers that I will forever cherish. Obviously, there are a few things I’m definitely ready to put to rest. I don’t want to relive the awkwardness of freshmen year, and I wish I could give calculus an adios (but that’s not happening anytime soon). So, I’m not going to say goodbye. I’m going to make this bittersweet ending more of a “See you later.” In the wise words of Suzie Welch, “This is huge!” High school is a time of growth. Your years at Oak Grove will mold you and shape you no matter what. Treasure this time, and hopefully, you won’t want to forget these four pivotal years.

Jonathon Nguyen - My name really isn’t Chao. Ali Biedenharn - Sometimes I sit in the parking lot before school and debate on getting out of my car; half the time I choose going home. Cameron Cloud - I confess that Will, Buck, and I have peed on the school multiple times. Constance Sloan - First, I would like to make a confession to Mr. Lanterman. I cheated on the majority of your tests by using Mathway; it solved the problems for me. I also would like to make a confession to Ms. Bailey Anglin, most of the times when I was saying I was in the gym helping out with the basketball team, I was just sitting there and relaxing so I wouldn’t have to come to class . Oops! Adasia Raimey - I almost let my 7th grade sister talk me into skipping school and going to the mall one morning. Michaela Smith - The only assigned book (out of about 6 or 7) that I ever read in 11th grade English was The Crucible. Sorry, Ms. Clark. But hey, I still got an A! Emily Knue - I still hold grudges against some of my classmates for things that happened when we were kids. Also, I actually don’t want to graduate because when we do, our adult lives officially start, and that terrifies me. I don’t want to grow up. Savannah McCarty - I never actually learned any of your names. Josh Mixon - I am really Batman. Allen Jones - I cussed at the teachers a lot. Shelby Sutton - I confess that I am actually really irritated every time I walk down the halls because I can’t see over everyone else and people step on me because they can’t see me.

FINAL FAREWELL graphic designer

It’s strange and almost anticlimactic to be accomplishing the ultimate goal, one I’ve spent thirteen years working towards, graduating from Oak Grove High School. When I was younger, I swore I’d never grow up (I wanted to be a lifetime member of the “Kids Next Door,”) and vowed to always love Barbie, but not even the most passionate of vows could stand the test of time. Time, that’s something that’s been one extreme or the other for me. Too long until 4th lunch or until school got out, and barely enough to eat my lunch or finish homework. Needless to say, high school has taught me time management, but when that fails, if you aren’t tardy, homeroom is the safe haven for procrastinators or the “I forgot.” On a serious note, over these four years I’ve become much bolder, more open-minded, and best of all, less sensitive. Mrs. Douglas, I know you’re thinking, “You just cried over a B in my class last semester,” but trust me, that was a serious improvement. Kiddos, no matter how saddening and awkward it is, we all must experience growth and (for some of us) maturity. Though it’s difficult, just enjoy life and the moment you’re in now. If “now” sucks because your forehead keeps shedding like a snakeskin, just stop drinking sodas, and the kids at summer camp will stop calling you flaky. Anyway, I will miss this school, and you guys, too. Be safe, be smart, be kind, and most of all, be fun.

EMILY

FINAL FAREWELL staff reporter

While I am thankful for the many experiences I have gained at Oak Grove, I’ve realized that high school is filled with fake people, people-pleasers, bullies, etc. And although I know this doesn’t change in the real world, I am glad I experienced this in high school. Through it all, I’ve chosen not to let other people’s opinions bring me down. Never worry about what other people say because you can never amount to people’s expectations. Just be you even though you’ll always be under the microscope of scrutiny. Also, freshman year is excusable for all the stupid things we all did. You’ve got to learn some way, right? High school just takes some figuring out. You’re going to make lots of new friends, lose some old friends, have your heart broken, fail your first test, and land yourself in situations you can’t get yourself out of. On the opposite end, the “senioritis is real” phrase does not even begin to prepare you for your last year of high school. You will find yourself running late, skipping class, and checking in to second block almost everyday. You will say “I don’t care” about virtually everything. But even though you will have some bad experiences in high school (and trust me, you will), there are also some really great ones like meeting lifelong friends. And when you find yourself in the last few days, you start to realize that even though school can sometimes feel like a prison, you’re going to miss your cellmates. You relive all the memories you had with these people you’ve gone to school with since you were little warriors. Then, you realize you must all go your separate ways, but you will stay rooted in the warrior traditions you were raised on. So seniors, as Dr. Suess said,“You’re off to great places. Today is your day. Your mountain is waiting, so get on your way.” Farewell, Oak Grove High School.

FINAL FAREWELL sports reporter

I remember my first day of high school like it was yesterday. I remember laughing at people saying they got lost on the way to their classes thinking I would never do that. Sure enough, I did. Shoutout to Mrs. Slay for showing me where B Hall was. Obviously I couldn’t read a map. Next thing I know, I blinked. Now I have less school days left than I’ve had semesters in Mrs. Clark’s class. Yes, I had her five times. I can honestly say the past four years at this school have been some of the best four of my life. From the memories made, to lifetime friendships built and strengthened, to the incredible faculty, staff, and administration here, Oak Grove has built a solid foundation for me to build on the next four years of college and for the rest of my life. From winning a state baseball championship my freshman year, to the tornado my sophomore year, to winning state in football AND baseball my junior year, to graduation in a few short days this year, memories like these don’t come at just any school. I can’t thank the Lord enough for placing me at Oak Grove and allowing me to experience such a memorable four years here. I honestly don’t know what I’ll do next year when I’m not rolling into school at 8:16 on the dot, complaining to Welch about how I hate calculus, eating lunch in Davis’s room, and heading to the baseball field house every day for fourth block. It’s a good thing I’ll still be sporting black and gold next year at Southern Miss. I’ll say that. Now let’s go get one last baseball ring before I leave this place. As I’m sure the great Ron Burgundy would say if he were a responsible, respectful, individual on the road to success, “Stay Classy, Oak Grove High School.”

FINAL FAREWELL staff reporter

Over the years, my family has developed this tendency to use the phrase “merry adventure” in referencing our lives’ events. This usually refers to any happening that has an ultimately good impact, but not without a few bumps along the way. I find this characterization quite fitting for my time at Oak Grove High School--probably yours too. And oh, what a merry adventure it’s been. Four years ago, I don’t think I ever expected to address the student body with anything to say for myself, but today, I’m sitting here writing this, and later, you’ll be reading it. So thanks for that. The last four years have offered much to each of us, but more than anything, high school has been a source of opportunity. Opportunities to grow, to learn, to try new things, to meet new people, to become anyone you want to be. Opportunities to push yourself, to accept new challenges, to take hard classes, to take easy classes, and to learn from both; to gain freedom, to lose freedom, to oversleep, to eat terribly, to drink entirely too much coffee, to make mistakes, to make wise choices, and everything in between. The list goes on, and I apologize if you’re already bored. Go ahead and make fun of me for sounding like a college brochure or the speaker at a Freshman orientation, but you all know it’s true. High school has been full of decisions to make, and those decisions have shaped us into the graduating seniors we are today. But the most valuable lesson I take with me from these opportunities, taken or ignored, is that while important, they do not add up to the sum total of who you are. Your high school experience, while it may shape you , does not define you. Your failing a calculus test, inability to get past the tardy table by 8:17, GPA, final ACT score, failing another calculus test, popularity, amount of scholarship money earned, class rank, or failing yet another calculus test does not determine the course of your life after May 23, 2015. These are simply parts of the merry adventure-in context, very small parts. So enjoy it. Put yourself out there, join clubs, do your best, go on trips, and find the good people. But don’t wait until your senior year because that’s when you start reflecting on all you could have done, all you should have done, and all you didn’t do. And that, my friends, is just depressing. I can’t say I believe high school will be the best four years of my life; maybe they’re not supposed to be. But I do believe it’s what you make it, so please make it something. A little coffee and Jesus, and you’ll be just fine. With that, I’ll leave you with this wisdom from Winnie the Pooh: “If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together... there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart... I’ll always be with you.” See you later, OG. Thanks for being part of my merry adventure.

David Chapman - “If you don’t litter, you don’t love America.” -Richard Davis Allec Willis - “Y’all all look funny.” -Andrea Clark Josh Mixon - “I like your outfit.” -Gabi Fincher Gabi Fincher - “Take me wich’ ya. I like you’s outfit.” -Gabi Fincher Shelby Sutton - “Sure, you can cheat or use your notes on the test; but you’ll get a zero and it will be easier for me to grade!” -Doc Daisy Picazo - “Good morning Oak Grove High School.” -Cara Slusher

TEACHER FAREWELLS

DIANE HARDIN When I think about the Class of 2015 graduating, memories come rushing back, but not the memories you might think. My memories of you are sprinkled with remembrances of the first time I met many of you – as eighth graders. I remember students who were so shy you would barely answer roll call. Others were so silly I feared you would never mature. (The jury is still out on a few of you!) With a mouth full of braces and a forehead laced with pimples, I remember the fear and dread of the unknown experience that was to be high school. Fast-forward a few, quick years, and here you stand, ready to graduate. You did it! At times you may have wanted to quit and feared the end would never come, but it finally has. My sincerest congratulations go out to the Class of 2015 who will always hold a very special place in my heart.

ELYSE RIEDER It is so hard for me to say goodbye to such an extraordinary class that has meant so much to me. I am so blessed to have taught so many of you. As much as I’ve taught you, in turn you have taught me. This class has made me a better teacher. I will always treasure the bonds I share with the class of 2015.

MICHAEL SIMMONS Congratulations! You are ready to embark on the next chapter in your lives. I feel honored and blessed to have shared many laughs and lessons with you over the past six years. You were my first class to teach. Some of you I taught multiple times; some of you I taught only once; and some of you I never had the pleasure of teaching, but I know you. Please leave here knowing how much of an impact you have had on me - assuring me that I am doing exactly what it is that I am supposed to be doing. You guys will always hold a special place in my heart. It will be strange walking the halls next year and not passing you guys along the way. It will be strange to not have you popping into my room to say “What’s up Simmons.” In bidding you farewell, I wish each of you the best of luck in your future endeavors, and pray that you will continue to strive for excellence and integrity. It also feels fitting to leave you with a quote from my favorite band: “Decide what to be, and go be it!” Love you guys!

SUZIE WELCH

ANDREA CLARK

When I think of the class of 2015, many words come to mind-intelligent, hard-working, kind, fun, loving, compassionate, generous, respectful, creative, talented…. musicians, athletes, artist, scholars, debaters, dancers, mathematicians. Wow! What a joy it has been for me to be associated with such an amazing class and to experience these characteristics and talents on a daily basis. For months I have dreaded saying, “Farewell,” to the class of 2015. You have been a wonderful class in so many ways and I have truly enjoyed getting to know you and working with you. Thank you for working so hard. I am sure that you will do many terrific things in the future. I look forward to seeing each of you achieve your goals. The best advice I can give you is not really mine, but here it is: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6) I wish you all the best with much love!

I am not sure whether to write sentimentally about the four years I knew each of you or to dispense sage advice about the next 12 years of learning you now face. Although the next decade will be full of challenges, you each already seem to possess combinations of those qualities and habits of mind, body, and spirit that should help you survive and even succeed, when others, equally as intelligent or talented, will struggle. I knew I had only to learn how you think because I never doubted for a second what you would think and do would be so far beyond my abilities and hopes that I would never need or dare to cross. Soon, your decisions and choices will be much murkier and more difficult, but if you remain confident in your abilities and good nature, you will make fewer mistakes. To quote DFW, “I wish you so much more than luck.”
