fter the Culinary Art’s management team won the first place state title in February, they traveled to Minneapolis, Minnesota, to compete against teams across the nation. Last year at state competition, the team won third as newcomers to ProStart and has since improved with a first place title. Culinary arts teacher Mrs. Debbie Miller and students Shakera Cuyler, Justice McCoy, Ashgne McLauren, and Sarah Smith made final touches to

the winning board and presentation before heading to nationals. A board of judges evaluated every team based on the following components: a visual display, a PowerPoint presentation, an oral presentation, and a critical thinking category. OG’s visual display offered judges and other competitors insight to the restaurant layout and theme, along with menu items and prices.

In order to provide more detail and a more concise organization, the team presented a PowerPoint to lead the oral presentation. The first night, a See Culinary PG.2

On May 5, hoots and hollers could be heard when Whitney Necessary was awarded Teacher of the Year for the first time. Necessary has been teaching at Oak Grove for six years but has been teaching for a total of 15 years.

She is currently teaching geometry and advising the award-winning Mu Alpha Theta club. Her protégé and friend Stephanie Floyd had kind words to share about Necessary. “Mrs. Necessary was awarded teacher of the year because of her dedication to and gift for teaching. She gives 150 percent to her students every single day. She stays late each afternoon to prepare for classes and tutor her students. She comes early when necessary, and she always works hard grading and planning lessons on the weekend.

Mrs. Necessary is also a blessing to her coworkers. She is always encouraging and ready to listen, and she is always willing to share her wisdom and resources,” Floyd said. When asked how she felt about her achievement, Necessary simply felt blessed. She strives to be like her mother, a retired English and Spanish teacher, by showing passion for her students. “If I can have that effect on even one student, I will feel like I’ve been a successful teacher. I do hope they remember some of the math too,” Necessary said.

Oak Grove High School receives many awards every year, whether it is pertaining to academics, sports, or the arts. None of these achievements would have been possible without the guidance of teachers and faculty members at Oak Grove. This year, Oak Grove has and will say goodbye to many teachers and other faculty members that have helped shape the minds of all of the students here.

Dr. Ben Burnett, the Superintendent of Lamar County Schools, has always been a part of the Oak Grove community and schools. Before he became

Superintendent, he was the Oak Grove band director from 1988 to 1997 and served as the principal of the middle school from 1997 to 2007. He has been around for a long time to see Oak Grove’s achievements.

“The best thing about being Superintendent was seeing our students succeed and seeing our district become an A school district last year,” Burnett said. “I am retiring in order to take the

ARABIAN NIGHTS AND DISNEY DAYS To most school clubs, a weekend without competition is considered a break, but for members of the Oak Grove High School drama department, a weekend in Disney World made for the perfect break to punctuate a successful season. Sponsored by the International Thespian Society (ITS), the Disney trip served as a reward for students’ performances in the Arabian Nights, the spring show, senior one acts, and all other shows that took place throughout the year.

Surrounded by iconic monuments like Cinderella Castle and The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Princess Scheherazade and King Shahryar were finally reunited with their Disney royal counterparts. ¿QUIERES IR A COSTA RICA? This year, Mr. Yore, Spanish teacher, introduced OGHS students to a unique opportunity: spending six days in the predominantly Spanish-speaking country of Costa Rica.

This summer, students around the country will journey to the Latin American nation to tour the tropical jungles, volcanic mountain tops, and the diverse set of ecosystems at home in this hospitable, alluring, and foreign country rich in educational value. Amazingly enough, no Oak Grove students will be among the 2014 summer student tour. Not able to meet the mandatory fifteen student requirement necessary to make the trip this year, Yore hopes to create a 2016 summer itinerary with Costa Rica on his list of destinations.

The end of the school year means many things: auditions for clubs next year, the senior class graduating, and of course, show choir’s final performance. The OGHS show choir performed a compilation of both their exhibition and competition pieces, as well as songs from their Southern Rock Medley at William Carey University on Saturday, March 5. After winning third place at a national competition, show choir finished their triumphant season with a harmonious bang. Sophomore Brittany Haynes summed up the show choir’s year perfectly when she said, “This season, I learned a lot. I experienced a lot, and I am beyond looking forward to another year.”

chased a yearbook attended the Senior Breakfast hosted by the yearbook staff. Food was shared, yearbooks were signed, and everyone had a great time reminiscing on their final year at Oak Grove High School.

The breakfast was enjoyed by many including co-editor of the yearbook Aubrey Sanders. “I think the breakfast went very smoothly,” Sanders said.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy both the breakfast and yearbooks.”

Seniors came from all over the school with invitations in hand to get into the breakfast and enjoy some quality time with friends.

Although the breakfast ran without any errors, there were some slip ups. Some seniors decided that even though they did not purchase a yearbook or receive an invitation, they were going to be at the breakfast. “Some people came to the breakfast and ate the donated food, but did not buy a yearbook,” Sanders said. “Through the swarm of people that came in, some people slipped through who did not purchase a yearbook. We should

have been clearer about the only people who were allowed to come.” Co-editory Bailey McCain felt the same way. She even suggested that some added security would not hurt.

The yearbook staff worked extremely hard on the yearbook this year and is very proud of their work. “After working on the book for an entire school year, it is definitely bittersweet,” Sanders said. It has been a long and tasking year for the yearbook staff, but they have definitely made the most of their time because it has paid off. “I loved watching the other seniors look through the book,” McCain said. “The breakfast gave everyone time to get signatures, and I hope they enjoyed it as much as we did. We worked so hard on this book, and I believe our hard work has paid off and it shows.”

Seniors sign scholarships to further pursue arts By: Chelsy Haynes Staff Reporter

To many, the arts is just a fancy way of describing singing or dancing, but to the recipients of arts scholarships, it is anything but that. It is a lifestyle. It is who they are. Many students involved in either band, show choir, or theatre auditioned for their chance to be awarded a scholarship, and 23 students were rewarded for their efforts.

These students trained hard to get where they are now and hope to continue their art in college. “I like being in theatrical events, and the opportunity to do it on a collegiate level was presented to me through William Carey, so I am going to take it,” senior Sawyer Walters said. “Mrs. A has been a great stepping stone and a huge help in preparing me for the next level.” Se-

nior Logan McCarty also believes that the theatre department at Oak Grove High has helped him get the scholarship. “The theatre program here has prepared me for wheat I am going to do in college,” McCarty said. “I am very excited for the scholarship and joining the William Carey theatre program.”

Many band students were also chosen for the award. “I have such a strong passion for music,” senior AJ Robinson said. “I have a zealous enthusiasm for music that propels me forward. Mrs. Laird requires her wind ensemble members to try out for the SEMBDA honor band every year, and I believe she does so for the scholarship opportunities it opens up.”

Wind Ensemble wins big in ATL By: Casey Ford Staff Reporter

At the conclusion of marching season, which corresponds with football season, the Oak Grove band begins to prepare for their concert season, which includes multiple regional contests and performances. This year, the Wind Ensemble, the top band of three concert bands within the Oak Grove band, was invited to perform in the Southern Star Music Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. Southern Star is a relatively exclusive band contest, inviting only 38 bands, orchestras, and choirs from nine states. The Wind Ensemble had the opportunity to play their music from the previous state evaluation for three judges who each gave the band high superior ratings. The group also won the Gold Award, Sweep-

school and our state proud. I will never forget my time in culinary arts or the trip to nationals. It was a perfect way to end senior year, and I can’t wait to hear about Oak Grove taking on nationals again in the future.”

Warriors start off hot in state playoffs By: Jonathan Brent Guest Reporter

The Oak Grove Warrior baseball team made it through their first three games of the playoffs successfully with strong pitching from veterans. The Warriors outscored Biloxi in the first round 18 to 2, winning the games 5-1 and 13-1, respectively. The Warriors then advanced to their second round of play and defeated Gulfport 5-0 in Game one.

Southern Miss signee Kirk McCarty (5-1) went the distance in both of his appearances, throwing seven innings of one run, two hit baseball against Biloxi. The score was tied at one a piece until the bottom of the fifth inning.

McCarty and fellow Southern Miss signee Taylor Braley hit back-to-back homeruns, sealing the deal for the black and gold. In game one against Gulfport this past Friday, McCarty threw seven innings again, this time only allowing one hit and no runs for the Admirals. Braley and freshman Drew Boyd each tallied

In game two against Biloxi, Pearl River signee John Carter Sanner (5-0), like McCarty in his first outing, only gave up two hits through four innings, also adding two RBIs at the plate. Junior Matthew Guidry and Braley each had three RBIs to lead the offensive explosion. Junior Laken Wilson was 4 for 4 on the Biloxi series.

With these wins, the Warriors are now one win away from a third straight South State Championship appearance. The Warriors would face district foe Brandon, a team whom the black and gold beat two out of three times in the regular season.“We’ve got to survive and advance, just like they say in March Madness,” head coach Chris McCardle said to his team after the series win at Biloxi.

The South State Championship series would begin Thursday at Harry Breland Field with game two being played at Brandon and game three, if needed, will again be at Oak Grove.

Lady Warriors

On May 3, 2014, the Oak Grove fastpitch softball team fell to Harrison Central in the third round of the Mississippi 6A playoffs. After winning the state championship in 2013, the Lady Warriors were hoping to again win the championship, yet such an accomplishment was apparently not in the cards for this season.

After becoming the district champions, the Lady Warriors received a bye from the first round of playoffs while other district teams battled for the chance to advance to second round. The Lady Warriors faced D’Iberville in the second round of playoffs and easily swept them with scores of 15-0 and 14-0. “After beating D’Iberville, we felt connected and united,” junior second baseman Kristen Martin said. “We felt like we had grown in our chemistry on and off the field.”

Once they defeated D’Iberville, the Lady Warriors then moved on to face Harrison Central.

rison Central at home for the first game of the bestof-three series on Friday, May 2. Harrison Central gained an early lead, yet the Lady Warriors rallied late in the game to lessen the score deficit; however, the Rebellettes eventually defeated Oak Grove 6-5.

The next morning, Oak Grove traveled to Harrison Central in hopes of winning the second game of the series in order to force a third game, and they did so by a score of 6-4. Immediately following the second game was the third “if-game” that would determine which team would advance to the South State Championships.

While the Lady Warriors battled, they eventually lost the third game, ending their 2014 season.

While their season may not have ended as they had hoped, the Lady Warriors have much of which to be proud. Even though they graduated three starting players in 2013, the team had many young players step up to contribute to a winning season, thus proving that the Lady Warriors have the capability to come back stronger in 2015.

The Oak Grove Warrior golf teams’ seasons drew to a close after the state tournament in which the boys’ team placed twelfth overall and and the girls’ team placed eighth. Under first year head coach Drew Causey, both the boys and girls golf members gained much knowledge and a better understanding of the game from the well-known football coach. “We had a lot of young golfers who got a lot better as the season

progressed,” Causey said.

Both teams recently competed in the state tournament held at Lake Caroline golf course in Madison, Mississippi. The boys team, led by Mississippi State signee Grant Motter and junior Jake Roberts, fell short of medaling as a team.

However, Motter placed in the top ten individually with a two day total of 147 (73-74), three over par for the two round competition. Roberts shot 80-79 for a two-day total of 159. He placed in the top 20. Roberts will be called upon to replace Motter as the Warriors number

Runners from schools all over the country put in hours of work each and every day to become the best he or she can be.

One of those thousands of schools is Oak Grove High School, where the track team is a powerhouse throughout the state. Senior Trey Sloan, junior Peter Harper, sophomore Brandon Clark, and freshman Dante Armstrong blew away the competition in the South State meet, winning first place in both the open 400 and the 4x4 relay. By doing this, these athletic young men qualified for the state championship

track meet.

On May 10, runners took a trip to Pearl, MS to put their skills to the test against seven opposing teams on the biggest stage in high school athletics. In the MHSAA track state championship, the OGHS team placed 4th in the 4X4 relay while Peter Harper individually placed 4th in the open 400. “It was a totally different atmosphere at the championship meet. There were runners there who had a level of experience I had never seen before,” senior Trey Sloan said.

The result was not exactly what they had hoped for, but the team is staying positive about future success. “There is always room for improvement, but I think our guys will keep their focus on

the right track,” Sloan said. “It is a huge accomplishment to even qualify for the state championship in any sport, so this season was a success in my book,” Sload added. Two values will remain the same in these runners despite the outcome of any track season: hard work and dedication.

Warrior runners will continue to put in hours of preparation whether they just won the national track championship or if they didn’t even qualify for the state championship. “If you put in hard work and grind every day, it will pay off in anything you do. Next year, we are going to come back much better than we were this year,” junior Peter Harper said.

OGHS senior skips prom for music fest By: Taylor Parsons Features/Opinion Editor

Spring means these two things for the average high school student: warm weather and music festivals. Senior Mary Hannah Ruff chose to attend a music festival instead of attending her senior prom. “The lineup was just too good to pass up,” Ruff said. Ruff was one of the 75,000 people who came together in the deserts of Indio, California, for the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Coachella showcases both emerging and popular artists. This year’s lineup included Ellie Goulding, Cage the Elephant, and Lorde. “My favorite artists were Lana Del Ray and Kid Cudi,” Ruff said, “but my favorite band was Naked & Afraid.” These were only a few of the acts sharing their music at Coachella.

Coachella is North America’s biggest music festival, but Ruff will also be attending Hangout Fest May 16-18 to see the rest of her favorite bands. Hangout Fest lineup for this year includes The Avett Brothers, The Killers, and OutKast. Both festivals had or will have televised portions for those who could not travel to see the shows live. Like Hangout Fest, Coachella offers campsites. With huge sponsors like Sephora and H&M, Coachella entertains their concert junkies with so much more than just

festival goers were nearly indistinguishable due to their similar clothing choices. All appearancebased judgements disappear during Coachella’s weekend of music.

People from all over the world come to Coachella for a weekend to see the most adored musicians of this generation. Ruff has no regrets of choosing this music festival over prom. “Prom was fun when I went my junior year,” Ruff said, “But it’s the same thing every year. I’d rather spend that money seeing my favorite bands and artists than on a dress I will wear once.” Despite missing a night with familiar friends, Ruff is confident she made right decision in choosing a weekend making new friends.

music. H&M provides free water and plenty of shopping opportunities. Sephora gives chances to touch up makeup, cool off in air conditioning, and charge phones. From snow ball fights to bad dancing contests, Coachella’s downtime activities have to be nearly as entertaining as the music.

As with other music festivals, Coachella has an unspoken dress code of flower child-inspired clothing. From flowered headbands to printed shorts, people wore clothing they would never have worn in the “real world.”

Cold brew. Cake balls. Customer service. These are three wonderful things any Hattiesburg hipster can expect when they arrive at T-Bones Record Store and Cafe. Along with these things, customers can also experience a relaxed atmosphere where they can study, enjoy a leisurely meal, or even choose a game to play with friends. TBones never fails to meet its customers’ needs.

In 2002, Harry Crumpler and his family took over TBones’s ownership. “The vision was to be a great independent record store. “We all love music here and enjoy helping people find music that means something to them. Furthering that thought has always been at the core of our vision,” he said. One of the best parts about T-Bones,

in Crumpler’s words, is the wide customer demographic.

Although I don’t own a record player, the record shop always seems to have a wide selection of vinyl, and if they don’t have what customers are looking for, then T-Bones will always order that record.

T-Bones always features local and up-and-coming bands on weekends. They also have a jazz brunch from 11am to 2pm on Sundays where they feature jazz musicians from Southern Miss.

This is my (and probably half of Hattiesburg’s) favorite time to eat at T-Bones.

T-Bones is known for its customer service. Every time I walk into the store, I’m always greeted by an employee who seems genuinely interested in how I’m doing. This kind of customer service is extremely refreshing.

Six years ago, T-Bones renovated some extra office space, turning it in the café. They also

recently completed a second café expansion. My favorite coffee drink at T-Bones is probably the cold brew. I always order mine made with almond milk and with a shot of caramel. The red velvet cake balls are also superb, but my favorite food item on the menu is probably the breakfast casserole. Each soup that I have had has also been delicious. The café has a weekly rotating soup menu. The sandwiches are also good (I like the Evil Twin, minus the jalapenos), and the salads and other veggies and fruits are always very fresh and usually

are organic. Each salad dressing is made from scratch in the kitchen. (The Vidalia onion is spectacular.)

T-Bones is always looking for ways to improve. “I’d like us to become an institution, a place where anyone can come and get good food and good music. We have many ideas for improvements in the future. It is always a ‘work in progress,’” Crumpler said. Whatever the improvements, I will always happily make the drive down Hardy Street to enjoy a cup of cold brew and a plate of cake balls.

FINAL FAREWELL

morgan guess, editor I cringe at the thought of graduation. It seems like just this year I found a comfortable routine, knowing where all my classes are located, and growing closer to the teachers who teach them. Through all the complaining and the conformity of uniforms, I’ve realized that Oak Grove has provided so many opportunities that some aren’t offered.

During my four years here, I joined almost every club including Robotics, Spanish Club, Red Cross, Beta Club, Art Club, Diamond Girls, and Newspaper. Of course, there are more each year. That’s what it means to be a part of a 6A public school: becoming involved. Transferring in third grade from private school, I hated not knowing anyone and having a classroom with double the amount of students. Looking back, moving to Oak Grove was the best thing that could’ve happened to me.

Walking into the lunch room freshman year, I knew there was a place and a friend for everyone. You just can’t be intimidated by new people, older or younger. You would be surprised how normal people actually are. True, some won’t become your lifelong friends, but you have to be determined when meeting new people. Make an effort, and the results will eventually be satisfactory. I’ve found that senior year is the time you find who your true friends are because you bond over the struggle of pulling through the final days until graduation. Appreciate your time here, accept the people around you, and anticipate everything that follows. Remember, if you’re really late you might as well be 40 minutes late with a nice breakfast to show for itChick fil A and Java Moe’s. God has a plan for everyone, so don’t worry or stress about anything. Give it your all, and set standards. If you can take an AP class with passing grades, do it. Who cares if you’re not the best of the best. Sometimes there isn’t room for all the classes you want along with extracurriculars, but you learn to prioritize. I’m ready for the next chapter in my life, and Oak Grove has been the perfect prologue for what’s to come. I can’t wait to marry Vampire Weekend lead singer and guitarist Ezra Koenig, while rooming and teaching with Sarah Smith who will eventually marry a handsome veterinarian. To some, this is only to be continued. To others, this is my final farewell.

luke smith, staff reporter All good things must come to an end at some point in every person’s life. Sadly, but surely, my time here at Oak Grove High School has reached its conclusion. I am looking forward to the days that lie ahead, but it is always good to reflect on our progress. The changes you will experience from ninth grade to twelfth grade are almost unbelievable. Many runny-nosed whippersnappers will turn into grizzly young men with lumberjack beards in a matter of years. Timid, young girls who are still figuring out who they are will soon become the almighty senior girls whom everyone looks up to. Wisdom and confidence usually come with age and experience. I encourage you all to make as many friends as you can and act like your true self around them, however weird and dumb you may look while doing it. Have fun and don’t worry about what others think of you, and people will want to be your friend. Don’t be afraid of failure because it will come. Learn from your mistakes and they will form the foundation for much greater things in your life. There is not a class at any high school that teaches these things, but your experiences in high school will reveal these things to you. Thank you, Oak Grove high school. Rock on.

Wow! This has been such an amazing year. Oak Grove will forever be in my memories. Moving to New York is a big step, but being a student at Oak Grove has helped me in so many ways to prepare for my future. To all of the students of Oak Grove, be yourself. Don’t change for anyone except yourself.

You are beautiful people, and you were made that way for a reason.

FINAL FAREWELL kirk mccarty, sports editor “It’s been real. It’s been fun. It just ain’t been real fun.” My Uncle Matt frequently says to me after one of our always interesting family outings. I’ve always wanted to find a perfect situation of my own to use his signature saying. Unfortunately, this is not that perfect situation. It has been real fun, and I can’t believe it’s coming to an end. As a freshman, senior year seemed light years away, but after a short power nap, (high school is definitely longer than a blink of an eye no matter how many people say “don’t blink”) your senior year is coming to a close. Although high school is only a short period in one’s life, it is crucial in preparation for the stages of life to come. While at this fine institute of learning, never let the awe of the high school atmostphere lose its luster. High school can be the best or the worst four years of your life, and that outcome is primarily dependent on the mindset of each individual as they roll themself out of bed every day (even Mondays) to come to school. There are very few things in life that I love more than I have loved my time at Oak Grove, a nice steak, singing in the shower, and, of course, Ron Burgundy. I will sign off forever with the same words the legendary anchorman signed off with to the great people of San Diego, “Stay classy, Oak Grove High School.”
