2016-2017 Annual Report

For almost 60 years, The Walker School’s parents, friends and families have selflessly given of their time, talent and resources to ensure our mission is fulfilled for every generation of Walker students. What started as a small kindergarten class of 10 students in the basement of St. James Episcopal Church on historic Marietta Square, has grown over the last half century into an exceptional college preparatory school. At Walker, challenging academics are balanced within our nurturing environment. Our dedicated faculty are able to create meaningful relationships with their students, giving them the confidence to explore the boundless opportunities in front of them. And when they are ready to take that next step into college, our awardwinning college counseling program provides expert guidance, leading each student to find their best fit. It is through the act of giving that Walker is able to maintain this unique environment for nearly 1,000 students every day. We thank each and every donor listed in the following pages for their generous support – which makes all these things possible.

Celebrating of Wonder

Letter from the Chair of the Board of Trustees

“A Remarkable and Transformative Year…” They represent a deeper commitment to the mission of Walker and the life changing relationships created between our teachers, coaches, students and athletes. These new spaces are where our students will learn and feel valued, encouraged, challenged and supported. This is where they will develop the skills and tools necessary to succeed in life and make a difference in their communities by investing in people.

Scott and Spain Gregory with son Harry and daughter Helen.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am writing to express our sincere appreciation for the incredible generosity our parents, teachers, staff, grandparents, alumni and friends extended to the Annual Fund and The Wonder of We Capital Campaign last school year. The results of the Annual Fund and Capital Campaign were truly remarkable and are transformative for our campus, teachers and students. Over 90 percent of our families made an investment in the Annual Fund, and we secured over $10,000,000 in pledges by the June 30, 2017 deadline to assure critical foundation grants for the Capital Campaign. That amount is more than twice that raised during any previous campaign in the School’s history. The positive impacts of your investment in Walker are visible everywhere - from the steel and brick structure of the new STEM building to the grass growing on the new athletic fields, which will be played on this spring. These new additions to our campus are much more than an investment in bricks and mortar, classrooms or playing fields.

I also want to take this opportunity to highlight Walker’s mission, or perhaps better stated its “reason for being,” that attracted and keeps our family here. At Walker, we believe “in the infinite worth and dignity of the individual” and “that student learning is the chief priority of the school.” The mission of the School reflects this core tenet by striving to

4

So what distinguishes Walker and makes it worth the investment? For our family, it is the mission of the school and the unique educational experience it provides for our children. Walker students are required to stretch in all areas – athletics, public speaking, academics, working in teams and partnering with others. This incredible experience is captured best in a quote from the philosopher, John Dewey, “[s] uch happiness as life is capable of comes from the full participation of all our powers in the endeavor to wrest from each changing situations of experience its own full and unique meaning.” On a daily basis, Spain and I see our children actively participating in life and being challenged by other students and teachers to “wrest from each changing situation of experience its own full and unique meaning” for them. We believe this “stretching” of their faculties is building the skills and confidence for them to fully participate in whatever exciting roads they choose to travel in life. The students and teachers at Walker are actively engaged in living out (in all of life’s disarray) Walker’s core beliefs in a nurturing environment. This is “why” Walker is valued by our family and the reason we invest in the School. Again, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for supporting The Walker School with your time and resources. We hope you will continue to be actively engaged and participate in the life and mission of the School, and we look forward to hearing your story of “why” Walker. Sincerely,

H. Scott Gregory For the Board of Trustees

Letter from the Annual Fund Parent Chair

“Philanthropy is a Shared Value…” As parents of a senior and “lifer,” my husband and I have had a myriad of opportunities to experience Walker’s core values first-hand, all fifteen of them! We have been blessed by the incredible and authentic support and kindness of the faculty and staff; awestruck by the unbelievably unique and tight-knit student body; and enriched by our Walker family friendships we have made along the way. What an incredible journey we have had over the past 13 years!

Left to right: Zack, Emma, Mary and John Camp

Dear Walker Family,

Philanthropy is a shared core value that we all try to impress upon our children, with the message that no gift goes unnoticed no matter the size and that every gift matters. On behalf of the Annual Fund Committee, I would like to express our gratitude to the Walker community for the continued generous support of the Annual Fund and for ensuring that we met the challenge and reached our goal!

It has been an honor and privilege to serve the Walker community this past year as the Annual Fund Chair. Together, as parents, grandparents, alumni, faculty and staff, we have made an incredible difference in the lives of our children, grandchildren, and future generations of The Walker School! I am humbled by the generosity of our community, in both time and resources. And it is in this spirit that I would like to thank the Annual Fund Committee

for their endless hours of service; the faculty, staff and Board for their continued support at the 100% participation level; and our tremendous parent group for reaching a 90% participation rate in a record-breaking 90 days, thanks to a challenge issued by a small group of generous parents. The detailed report of giving and support is outlined within this Annual Report, so I hope you will take the time to review the ways our contributions support the needs of the students and staff at Walker.

Sincerely,

Mary Camp 2016-2017 Annual Fund Chair

Each year The Walker Annual Fund relies on a group of dedicated volunteers from across all grade levels to encourage community-wide support. Personal contact from Walker volunteers helps strengthen the sense of community and helps ensure a culture of philanthropy that is so important to the life of our School. While making charitable support of Walker a priority and inspiring others to do so as well, these individuals played an important role in making sure the 2016-2017 Annual Fund was a success:

The Walker School 2016-2017 Annual Fund

Are you ready for a challenge? 2016-2017 Annual Fund

Thank you to the Walker community for the overwhelming response to the 2016-2017 Annual Fund Challenge! A small group of generous parents issued a challenge to our community in August 2016: reach 90% parent participation by December 31, 2016 and the School will receive $50,000 for the Annual Fund. This 100-day effort was a resounding success, reaching 90% by midnight on the day of the deadline. This challenge also helped Walker reach the overall Annual Fund goal in record time. Again, thank you to each and every donor who helped support this challenge for the benefit of our teachers and students!

How Are My Annual Fund Dollars Used? A culture of philanthropy is at the heart of a great independent school. Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of an education at Walker – or any private school. Walker’s tuition covers 90% of the cost – which means Annual Fund contributions help, in part, bridge the gap between tuition dollars and the actual cost of operating the school. Every dollar of your Annual Fund gift goes immediately to use by: •

Assisting with salaries and benefits that allow Walker to hire and sustain a team of outstanding faculty, staff and coaches

Funding professional development opportunities for faculty in their area of expertise

Supporting an array of academic programs and services for all students in all four divisions

Bringing new technology, equipment, supplies and other programs into the classroom

Providing resources, equipment and programming for Walker fine arts and athletics 7

Letter from our Head of School

Something Remarkably Different... As we celebrate our School’s 60th anniversary, it is important to reflect on what makes The Walker School so special, and to say thank you to everyone who, through the decades, has given generously to make this school what it is today. When I think about the question, “What makes this school so special?” the answer is “hard-working students, committed parents, and teachers who go above and beyond.” This was true when we were the St. James Day School on Church Street; it continued to be true when the Joseph T. Walker School was located on Waterman Street; and it has certainly been true since The Walker School found a permanent home at 700 Cobb Parkway North. Families who chose Walker were looking for something remarkably different for their children. One recent graduate captured the essence of Walker as she looked back on her fourteen years here and, in gratitude, wrote the following to the entire faculty and staff: “During my time at Walker, the school became my home. Furthermore, you were like my parents. One of the wonderful attributes of Walker is the close relationships the teachers and students have. You inspired me, helped me, guided me, and of course taught me. One of many things that is so special about the faculty at Walker is that you don’t feel your job ends with the last bell of the day. You seem to truly love what you do. You have given out cell phone numbers, stayed long after school, and even held review sessions on the weekends to answer questions and ensure your students’ success. Your talents often stretch far beyond the classroom, too. We see you racing from the all-too-famous Wednesday faculty meetings to a practice or game, and others of you get up early to unlock your room for a morning club meeting. To Walker faculty, teaching isn’t just a job; it’s your life, and your dedication shows.” The dedication of our faculty and staff has always been the main reason why families have been attracted to The Walker School, and it is also the reason why so many have given philanthropically to the school over the years. As you read through this annual report, there is an abundance of evidence of the generosity of the Walker community, both to our Annual Fund and to The Wonder of We Capital Campaign. I know I speak for everyone associated with the school when I say, “Thank you for giving above and beyond to The Walker School in support of our students, faculty, staff and program.”

With gratitude,

Jack Hall, Head of School

Time for a pop quiz! What do a software entrepreneur, an Emmy-nominated producer, a physician, a government thinktank researcher and a fighter pilot have in common? They are all Walker graduates! In the following section, we catch up with some special Walker alums from the 1980s - 2010s to see what they are up to today and how The Walker School teachers made an impact on their education and careers.

Alumni Profile

Tammy (Tanner) Farley '84 Rainmaker Group. We focus on profit optimization for the hospitality industry. Q: What did you like most about Walker? A: The small, family atmosphere and the “independence” of the school. Walker totally embraces free thinking and I love that! Q: What is something you learned at Walker and never forgot? A: Self confidence.

Q: What school did you attend before coming to Walker? What were the biggest changes for you as a new student? A: Farmington High School in Farmington, Michigan. Walker was much smaller (my Farmington class was about 400, Walker was 18!)… and, I had never lived in a “southern” city before and really had never even thought about things in terms of North and South!

Q: Who were the faculty members that influenced you the most? How? A: Dixie Bowden was amazing, intellectual, interesting and pushed us to think… Ed Deavers was wonderful... he, too, was new to Walker and really helped me to feel a part of things. He also got me to get out of my comfort zone and get on stage! Q: Do you stay connected to Walker and/or old classmates today? A: Sadly it is largely through Facebook, but that does, in some strange way, make me feel connected!

Q: If you could send a message in a time capsule to a student graduating 60 years from now what would it say? A: Dream big, anything is possible…

What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear “The Walker School”? Independent Who would you have on your guest list for your ideal dinner party (living or deceased)? Princess Diana, Coco Chanel What was the last app you used? Boomerang Any podcasts, TV shows, or books you are loving right now? What are some of your hobbies and interests? Guilty pleasure is bad reality TV, so nothing I’ll admit to watching! I love to cycle indoors (spin) and have recently taken up running (I realize I am too old for that!) What is your idea of a perfect day? No plans, no agenda, ideally somewhere with my daughter!

Q: What college did you attend? How well do you feel Walker prepared you for the college experience? A: University of Michigan (I was the first one to cross the Mason Dixon line to attend college… despite having no clue where the Mason Dixon line was!!) I feel Walker did a great job preparing me for my academics, but not sure anything could have prepared me for life on such a massive campus with very little oversight!

What is your greatest fear? Not enough time to do all that I’d like to do!! What secret talent do you have? What is a talent you would most like to have? I wish I had a secret talent… I wish I could sing! What do you consider your greatest achievement? Raising a smart, beautiful, confident, independent daughter!

Q: What are you doing professionally now? A: I own a software business–The 24

Any podcasts, TV shows, or books you are loving right now? What are some of your hobbies and interests? Iain M Banks, Kurt Vonnegut, and Haruki Murakami are my favorite writers. On TV, I love “Stranger Things” and “Doctor Who.” I also read, collect, and sometimes write comic books.

Alumni Profile

Chris Wyatt '93 Film and Video Club,” the faculty gave me the tools to do that. I got a grant from the SGA, and got space to set up the school’s first video editing suite. I say “suite” but it was just one corner in a closet where they stored stacks of old textbooks… but it was still awesome. The school knew I was passionate about something and let me run with it.

Q: What school did you attend before coming to Walker? What were the biggest changes for you as a new student? A: I started at Walker in Kindergarten, and then went to public school (Rocky Mountain Elementary) for most of elementary. I returned to Walker starting in middle school. I’d say the smaller social groups and the lame dress code were the two biggest adjustments from public school. Q: What college did you attend? A: I got my MFA in Motion Picture Producing from the Peter Stark Producing Program in the School of Cinema/Television at the University of Southern California (USC) here in Los Angeles. Q: What are you doing professionally now? A: I’ve produced eight independent feature films, including the cult comedy “Napoleon Dynamite” and the multiple festival award-winning drama “Coyote.” I’m currently Executive Producer and Head Writer for an animated superhero TV show called “Stretch Armstrong and the Flex Fighters” that premiered on Netflix on November 17th. I also serve as Consulting Producer and writer on “Marvel’s Spider-Man,” an animated series that’s airing on Disney XD.

Q: What is something you learned at Walker and never forgot? A: Not to be late to Mrs. Bayer’s class. Q: Who were the faculty members that influenced you the most? How? A: I had a lot of amazing teachers while at Walker, and they all influenced me. The one I’d most like to talk about right now is Ed Deavers, my Drama teacher, who sadly passed away in 2010 – A major loss. Mr. Deavers demanded a level of professionalism not normally expected from school kids, and chose scripts that were more challenging than those normally tackled by high school programs. Because he was so demanding he got a reputation for being temperamental, but he taught us to think more deeply about our work, to think of it as a form of art. I try to always remember that.

Do you stay connected to Walker and/ or old classmates today? Everybody’s on social media, and we stay connected. A few of us went down to Brazil a couple of years ago for Brodie Ferguson’s wedding. If you could send a message in a time capsule to a student graduating 60 years from now what would it say? My advice to a graduating senior 60 years from now: Always keep your cybernetic implants updated, so they can help you avoid packs of rampaging bio-mutants that, I assume, will be hunting for humans in the ruins of the old city. What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear “The Walker School”? Demerits Who would you have on your guest list for your ideal dinner party (living or deceased)? Einstein What was the last app you used? The Dunkin Donuts one, where you get rewards points for buying donuts. What is your idea of a perfect day? I like to travel. Lost in the streets of an ancient city, perhaps. What is your greatest fear? Global annihilation, I suppose. That, or not getting enough reward points for buying donuts. What historical figure do you most identify with and why? I’m not sure about historical figures, but the fictional character with which I most strongly identify is definitely that one Death Star officer who can’t figure out why TK-421 isn’t at his post. What secret talent do you have? What is a talent you would most like to have? I don’t keep any of my talents secret. The talent I’d most like to have is ESP. I imagine that’s the talent that everyone would most want, but I don’t know for sure, because I don’t have ESP.

Q: What did you like most about Walker? A: I feel like Walker always encouraged students to pursue individual interests. When I wanted to form the “Walker

What do you consider your greatest achievement? This interview. 25

Arturo Holmes '06 Q: What are you doing professionally now? A: I am currently a resident physician in urological surgery at the Sate University of New York in Brooklyn.

Q: What school did you attend before coming to Walker? A: Inman Middle School, Mary Lin Elementary School. Q: What were the biggest changes for you as a new student? A: The workload and adjusting to a new environment. Q: What college did you attend? A: Mercer University. I graduated from medical school at Meharry Medical College

Q: What did you like most about Walker? A: The warm and caring faculty. They are highly invested in the success, development and maturation of their students both personally and professionally.

What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear “The Walker School”? Wolverine. Maroon. Gold. Band room. Wrestling room.

Q: What is something you learned at Walker and never forgot? A: It is okay to be different. In fact, it’s a good thing.

Who would you have on your guest list for your ideal dinner party (living or deceased)? Prince, MJ, the Geraces, Hendrix, Stevie, Bob, Aretha, Whitney, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, Drake, Taylor, Ira Glass.

Q: Who were the faculty members that influenced you the most? How? A: Deb & Mike Gerace. Steve Killian. They encouraged me to be true to myself and press forward despite all odds. Q: Any podcasts, TV shows, or books you are loving right now? What are some of your hobbies and interests? A: “This American Life” on occasion. I enjoy playing music. Q: If you could send a message in a time capsule to a student graduating 60 years from now what would it say? A: Beginnings do not define ends.

Q: How well do you feel Walker prepared you for the college experience? A: I was well prepared for my college experience. During my first semester of undergrad I made straight A’s in all my courses as a science/music major. I also continued to wrestle on a division team, participated in concert choir and gospel choir, and took violin lessons. Walker helped me learn to fully invest myself in my interests while performing at a high academic level.

What was the last app you used? Spotify What is your idea of a perfect day? One with people I love working toward a common but daunting goal. What is your greatest fear? Becoming someone I dislike. What historical figure do you most identify with and why? Leonardo da Vinci- I aspire to actualize my potentials to the best of my abilities. What secret talent do you have? Songwriting What is a talent you would most like to have? Telekinesis What do you consider your greatest achievement? Matching into residency

Savannah Boylan '11 Sullivan inspired us to reach our college dreams. If it wasn’t for Mr. Sullivan, I would not have even heard of Lehigh. He was able to expose me to northern liberal arts schools that fit my unique interests.

Q: What school did you attend before coming to Walker? What were the biggest changes for you as a new student? A: I attended Nebo Elementary school in Hiram, GA. I came to Walker when I was in 6th grade. A huge thanks to my mom and dad for my move to Walker. Thanks, specifically, to my mom who recognized the need for us to get a better education and then had the courage to move to a new city. And, to my dad, who tirelessly supported us at all sporting events, extracurriculars, and—of course—in our academics. Academically, the initial increase in workload was a challenge. However, I was motivated by the fact that students around me were willing to learn and study. Q: What college did you attend? How well do you feel Walker prepared you for the college experience? A: I received my BA at Lehigh University in International Relations along with a minor in Studio Art and Business. I am currently pursuing my Masters in Project Management at Georgetown University. Walker was an amazing resource in preparing me for college. Not only through the rigor of courses and the amount of AP exams I took, but the college counseling staff as well. I think any Walker alum in my generation will always say that Mr. Clark and Mr.

Q: What are you doing professionally now? A: I currently work at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars which is a non-partisan government think-tank in Washington, DC. To break this down from the political mumbo jumbo, I conduct research and plan events to help inform public officials on global issues and trends. Q: What did you like most about Walker? A: The teachers—hands down. These are some of the most influential people in my life. Although many of them no longer teach at Walker, their impact has helped shape my passions and career. Q: What is something you learned at Walker and never forgot? A: Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived—The fates of King Henry VIII’s six wives. Q: Who were the faculty members that influenced you the most? How? A: If I discussed all of the faculty members who have been a great influence to me I think this article would run past its word limit. Therefore, I have to distill it down to a few key individuals. The first and most influential would have to be Ms. Stricklen who taught me AP European History. Ms. Stricklen inspired my love of international relations and history. She offered invaluable advice on how to excel in my career and has always been a supportive mentor. She has even been a big part of my life after Walker. She saw her classes as a community, and our AP Euro class became a family. Other teachers that created a lasting impact were Laura Stewart who taught my AP Art class and encouraged me to go after 27

my dream of pursuing art (I ended up minoring in Studio Art in college). Mr. Crowers (or affectionately Doc Boss Master of All) made statistics fun even for someone who has never really enjoyed math. He was always willing to share valuable stories and give us advice on colleges, life, and navigating senior year of high school. Anna Kennedy served as my coach for Varsity Softball. Her commitment to the team and passion for helping me grow within the sport were invaluable. After graduating Walker, she has remained an important mentor and has helped me navigate through my life and career. Mrs. McConnaughey (English), Mr. Sullivan (College Counselor), Mr. Spivey (World History), Ms. Drew (6th Grade Geography), and countless others each deserve their own dedicated paragraph, and I cannot thank them enough for their support. Q: Do you stay connected to Walker and/or old classmates today? A: A few of us live in the DC area and get together quite often. Others are scattered across the country and we always try to have a reunion during Christmas every year. I have also been dating a fellow Walker ’11 alum for 7 years now, so I have to say that Walker has created more than just life-long friendships. Q: If you could send a message in a time capsule to a student graduating 60 years from now what would it say? A: I would tell them to invest in building lasting relationships. You will most likely forget most of the course material you learned, but connections you make with teachers, faculty, and your friends can last for decades. Q: What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear “The Walker School”? A: Family. Throughout my time at Walker, Mr. Murphy used to say “The Walker Family” and I couldn’t think of a more true way to describe the school.

Alumni Profile

Taylor Boylan '13

Q: What college did you attend? How well do you feel Walker prepared you for the college experience? A: I went to West Point in New York after graduating from Walker, where I had attended school since 4th grade. I must say Walker well prepared me for the rigors of academics. It certainly failed to prepare me for the cold weather though. Q: What are you doing professionally now? A: Professionally I fly jets as an Air Force officer. Not bad considering I get paid to do barrel rolls and fly really, really fast. Walker can prepare you for anything! Q: What did you like most about Walker? A: The teachers, hand down. Q: What is something you learned at Walker and never forgot? A: I learned to follow my passions. I think this happened because I dabbled in little bit of everything at Walker. The opportunities and proximity allowed me

to do so. This allowed me to learn what I like (sports, learning and art), something that has led me to much happiness now.

by Stephen King. By far my favorite podcast is Revisionist History by Malcom Gladwell. I highly recommend checking it out!

Q: Who were the faculty members that influenced you the most? How? A: Two faculty members. The first is Dr. Cindy Schafer. I remember sometime in AP World History she must have failed an essay I though was decent. The thing is, she did not accept ‘decent.’ She required perfection or striving for as much as can be realistically attained, then gave me the feedback and faith as a teacher I needed to improve. That lesson of learning to strive for perfection academically stuck with me.

Q: If you could send a message in a time capsule to a student graduating 60 years from now what would it say? A: I would say this: “Relax, follow your dreams. The great thing about college is that your degree doesn’t really matter (with a few exceptions). Use the time to learn about yourself first, what you enjoy second, what you’re good at third. Lastly, learn about your degree! Things will work out in the end because life’s lessons don’t come from a degree, but life experiences. Strange how that works right?” Walker is definitely a good starting point for that.

The second faculty member to influence me the most was Ira Dawson. Most of his lessons came from the football field. He taught me to go the extra mile, to keep pushing when I thought I couldn’t and ultimately to be a leader. While sometimes practices seemed tortuous, I always left with this intense requirement to never let him down. He captured us (the players) like that because he cared so much about our success on and off the field. That care and multifaceted development is the hallmark of a true life teacher, which Walker has many. Q: Any podcasts, TV shows, or books you are loving right now? What are some of your hobbies and interests? A: I love the book Grit by Angela Duckworth and The Dark Tower series 28

Letter from the Director of Advancement

A Tremendous Honor and Privilege

styles and making sure that their needs, both social/emotional and academic, are being met. With my family’s rich history at Walker and our commitment to the future of the School, beginning work on the campus master plan was an easy transition. Throughout the campaign, I have been in awe of the generous Walker community. In addition, we received tremendous support from Atlanta-area foundations. Not only do we invest in Walker, but the vote of confidence from these organizations shows that the broader community believes in Walker too. This campaign truly reflects the ‘Wonder of We.’

Shelly and Skip Manuel with son Finn and daughter Kate

In spring of 2014, I received the wonderful news that I would be Walker’s new Director of Advancement fully aware that my first major project in this newly created role would be to direct the largest capital campaign in the School’s history. It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to work on Walker’s behalf the past three plus years on this exciting effort. The generosity and commitment of our community is remarkable. In addition to taking an exciting step in my career, my husband and I were also delighted to send our children to Walker. Having attended school here from 1985-1996, we knew what a strong community that we were joining and that our kids would be getting

the best education possible. So much has changed in the 20 years since I’ve graduated, but the heart of Walker has remained the same. We have had

“So much has changed in the 20 years since I’ve graduated, but the heart of Walker has remained the same.”

As the Science and Technology building goes up and the first team takes the field on the new athletic fields this spring, we continue our efforts to go beyond our $10 million goal and would still welcome the opportunity to share our vision and discuss investing in that vision. The following list reflects those donors who went above and beyond their annual giving, stretched, and made this project possible. On behalf of all Walker students - past, present, and future - I simply cannot thank you enough. Sincerely,

professionals who know our children guide them through their early education. We have had tremendous support in navigating their individual learning 37

The Walker School 2016-2017 Annual Fund

Giving to Walker There are many opportunities to support The Walker School’s outstanding programs and people, nearly all of which are tax-deductible. Below you will find a number of methods by which you can contribute to the Annual Fund, the school’s most important fund raising effort, as well as other forms of giving that support the school. If you have any questions regarding the information below please don’t hesitate to contact the Advancement Office.

Pledges

The Walker School accepts and encourages pledge commitments to the Annual Fund. Pledges must be paid as a one-time payment or in installments by June 30, the end of the school’s fiscal year.

Cash Contributions

Unrestricted gifts of cash are the most popular and easiest way to support Walker. The majority of gifts made to the Annual Fund come in the form of cash or check. A gift of cash receives the most generous federal income tax deduction available for charitable contributions.
