Head Coach Scott Klees on this year’s War Eagles: Undersized, but with some excellent players in skill positions “We’re still considered a young team,” Wakulla Head Coach Scott Klees says of his 2010 War Eagles. “We have 16 freshmen and sophomores on the team,” he says. And this year’s team is a little undersized, Klees said. “This is the smallest Wakulla team since I’ve been coach,” he says. “We need to stay healthy,” he says, because there’s not a lot of depth behind the starters. On the positive side, while the players are smaller, they make up for it with speed. The team has a lot a offensive weapons, Klees said, and a lot of good players in skilled positions on both sides of the ball. “Last year was the first time in eight years we didn’t make the play-offs,” Klees says, noting Wakulla went 7-2, but those two losses were to district rivals Lincoln and Leon. This year the goal is to get back in the hunt, make district, and go after a state title. On offense Returning this year at quarterback is senior Casey Eddinger. “We’re counting on counting on him to make plays for our team,” Klees says. He has a talented group of running backs led by junior Will Thomas, last year’s leading rusher for Wakulla.

The offensive line is led by Tyler Corbett, and supported by lineman Mason Dotson. On defense The defense’s quickness is exemplified by cornerback Marshane Godbolt, a junior whose athleticism Klees praises, noting Gobolt is a true two-way player. Klees also lavishes praise on linebacker Kevin James: “I think he’s one of the top linebackers in this area, period.” Nose guard Matt Fields, while undersized for the position, Klees boasts that he is “the heart and soul of that defense. As he plays, so we go.” District rivals With three district rivals – Chiles, Lincoln and Leon – Klees notes you can’t lose two and get to the district, which was what happened last year. But it’s the Lincoln game that Klees and his players are most looking forward to this year. Klees anticipates that will be the game that defines the season. The players are fired up for it, motivated by revenge for last year’s loss – plus feeling that Lincoln is looking past them as an easy win, having scheduled their homecoming for the game against Wakulla. For the players, the idea spoiling Lincoln’s homecoming with an upset would just be that much sweeter. Klees is looking forward to playing North Florida Christian, his alma mater, in a game that got canceled last year because of an outbreak of flu.

Meet War Eagles defensive coordinator Grady Guess

Defensive coordinator Grady Guess with some defensive players. (Photo by Ken Fields/Special to The News)

New defensive coordinator Grady Guess says it’s going pretty good with getting players and coaches on the same page with his new defensive schemes. “It’s a little more for the kids to understand,” he says, and depends on players reading and reacting to offensive formations. “We’re not very big up front,” Guess says, “but we’re trying to do some things to allow us to be successful,” Wakulla’s district foes are “huge,” Guess says, which he hopes to make up for with his defensive schemes and Wakulla’s speed. Linebackers and other skilled players are good, he says, but still green. The cornerbacks are good, and there’s been some changes in the secondary, he says. His defensive philosophy is not to give up the big play. “We playing low percentages,” he says, adding that it’s unusual for a high school offense to mount and sustain a long drive. “It’s rare for a high school team to drive 80 yards,” he says. When it does happen, it’s usually because of defensive mistakes that have given up big yards. If a defense can limit the offense to field goal attempts, then the chance for a win increase, he says.

Five War Eagles to watch

Quarterback Casey Eddinger – senior A fourth year varsity player, Coach Klees is looking for big things from starting quarterback Eddinger. “A tremendous leader,” Klees says. “A tremendous athlete.” Eddinger said he just wants to play his game. “We’ve been working hard all summer and look forward to getting started – and try to win them all.” The game he’s most looking forward to is Lincoln.

Running back Will Thomas – junior Thomas is at the head of a talented group of running backs, Coach Klees says. He was the leading rusher last year and led the team in touchdowns. His main goal this year is to get to the playoffs and beat rivals Lincoln and Leon. Especially Lincoln, he says. Scheduling Wakulla as their homecoming game, he says, was “kind of a slap in the face.” He believes some teams have underestimated the War Eagles. “We just have to prove them wrong,” he says.

Cornerback Marshane Godbolt – junior Back in defensive coverage again, Coach Klees notes Godbolt is one of the few true two-way players. “He’s a very, very good athlete,” Klees said. Godbolt spent part of the summer at a football camp in Atlanta where he saiys he learned some new stuff. He’s most looking forward to the Lincole game. “They put as their homecoming,” he said, “thinking we’re an easy win.”

Nose guard Matt Fields – senior

The player Coach Klees describes as “A little undersized, but he’s the heart and soul of that defense. As he plays, so we go.” Fields says he’s looking forward to winning games and getting to the playoffs. The team is pumped after a summer in the weight room and has been working hard, he said. The game he’s most looking forward to is Lincoln. “They whipped us last year and I just want to get after ‘em.”

Tackle Tyler Corbett – senior He’s the anchor of the offensive line, says Coach Klees. “He’s our leader out there,” Klees says, “and we’re expecting big things from him this year.” His goal for the year is a championship, he says. He is also looking forward to the Lincoln game. “They’re a good, tough team,” Corbett says. “I love competition.” “We worked hard this summer,” he adds. “Everybody got stronger, better, faster – and everybody’s pretty much looking forward to that game.”

2010 Wakulla Middle School Wildcats

The WMS Wildcats are ready to begin their 2010 campaign with a returning group of players from last year on both sides of the ball that Coach Bob Wells described as “strong.” Twenty-one eighth graders are lead by captains Hunter Hurst and Cole Henderson and include Tucker Pearce, Caleb Fell, Brandon Geiger, Patrick Harvey, Logan Harrell, Tanner Gainer, Nathan Green, Thomas Barwick, Gunner Martin, Cody Bickel, Austin Cruse, Charles Burns, Jacob Price, and Domonic Tucker.

WMS will feature a physical defense and a ball control offense, said Coach Wells. On the offensive side of the ball, a veteran O-line consists of center Anthony Romanus, guard Austin (“Mohawk”) Beaulieu, tackle Cody Bickel, guard Beano Burns, tackle Thomas Barwick, tight end Gunner Martin, and Nathan Green. “This group has been very strong though out the preseason demonstrating great blocking and a solid understanding of what we are trying to accomplish on the offense,” said Wells. The eighth graders are supported

WMS Coaches Bill Peck, Eddie Metcalf, Bobby Wells, and Josh Sandgren.

by an outstanding seventh grade class with contributors on both offense and defense. “Look for names like Nate Lee, Tyler Teegen, Jake Bryan, Thomas Conner, C.J. Langston, Colton McCulley, or Austin Johnson to play at any time,” Wells said. The offensive will be lead by Caleb Fells at QB, possibly one of the better quarterbacks to come out of WMS in the past few years. Behind Fells will be running backs Hunter Hurst and Patrick Harvey with Logan Harrell and Brian Edge also getting time carrying the ball.

“Physical and smart are the two things we have to be,” said Wells. “Our schedule includes teams like Marianna, RMS, Perry, Quincy Shanks, and Jefferson. We can’t have a down week and win a championship this year.” The Wildcats coaching staff consists of Defensive Coordinator Eddie Metcalf, special teams and line coaches Josh Sandgren and Bill Peck. The WMS Wildcats open on Sept. 9 at home against the Marianna Bulldogs. Game time is 7 p.m. at Wakulla High School.

Wakulla Gridiron Club supports War Eagle football By CYNDI DOTSON Wakulla Gridiron Club

The Wakulla Gridiron Club is the booster club for the Wakulla High School War Eagle Football team. In the Spring when the bleachers are empty and the memories of the past football season start to fade, the Gridiron Club members are in planning mode, and beginning to project toward what the War Eagle Football Program will be in need of for the upcoming season. Our boosters work tirelessly to raise the funds needed to ensure that each year our program is successful and our players have the necessary training, equipment, and support to ensure a successful season. Money raised by the boosters goes to team camps, skills camps, protective equipment, uniforms, meals for the team before their games, burgers on Mondays after winning games, travel

expenses for far away games (playoffs, etc.), spirit packs, sweats, and much more. In addition, when funds are available the Gridiron Club may purchase special equipment for team such as the inflatable helmet that is used at all home games, and the camera equipment used to capture game footage of each player to ensure that when a college is interested in one of our players, there are film highlights that can be shared with scouts. It is not unusual for the expenses of the Gridiron Club to exceed $20,000 annually. It is because of the support of the Wakulla Gridiron Club that the War Eagle Football program is noted as one of the premier programs in the area. In addition to the skills required of the game, these young men are learning the value of team work, respect, and dedication. These students are the future of our community, and our future leaders. Coach Scott Klees and his staff, the booster mem-

bers, and the community supporters are essential to ensuring the continued success of this program, and in turn the success of these young men. You can help support the Wakulla Gridiron Club and the War Eagle Football Program by becoming a Wakulla Gridiron season ticket holder. Membership provides you reserved seating at all home games (Varsity and Junior Varsity), parking in the secured Gridiron Parking section, and a Gridiron Car Tag. Visit our website at www.wakullagridiron.weebly.com or email us at WarEagleFootball@ embarqmail.com for more information on season ticket prices. In addition, local businesses play a huge role in supporting our program through the purchase of fence signs, program ads, and radio ads. The Wakulla Gridiron Club meets the second Thursday of each month in either the WHS weight lifting room, or in the field house office when there are no games.

Games will be broadcast on WAVE 94.1 FM All the War Eagle games will be broadcast on WAVE 94.1 FM this season, beginning with a pre-game show before kickoff. In the broadcast booth this year are Ferrell Barwick and Chris Savary, with Barwick performing the play-byplay duties and Savary offerng color commentary.

All the games begin at 7:30 p.m., except two district games – one at Lincoln and the other at Leon – both of which are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. The radio broadcast will begin with a pre-game show 30 minutes before the game begins.
