or most of us, the holiday season usually has our calendars filled with family gatherings and festive parties. This year marks a season filled with mixed emotions, mostly nostalgic, as we yearn for days gone by and remember what it was like when there weren’t so many restrictions in place. On a personal note, I’m looking forward to keeping the festivities to a minimum and celebrating things that resonate within. Sharing our time with family and friends (when possible) over a good meal, engaging in stimulating conversation and creating something extraordinary out of an uncomfortable time in the world definitely strikes a chord with me. Light a fire in the fireplace and gather around to connect on a deeper level with each other. These are the moments that can offer reassurance, a little comfort and go a long way to soothe our soul. In this issue, we endeavored to surround you with content that provides hopeful trepidation for the year ahead. We also want to remind you of the local businesses that offer inspiration and recognize each one in our Bestie Award winners list. Throughout this issue, you will find culminating page after page, everything from interior design inventiveness to fashion poised in a different setting. From our editorial team to our talented account executives, everyone has a contribution that creates this iconic publication that enables us to share it with our beautiful community month after month. Without each team member, this publication would not be what it is, nothing short of fabulous cover to cover.

New to the listings this year are quotes from the winners themselves! Our Tastes feature highlights multiple Bestie Award winner Volare Italian Ristorante and its talented Head Chef, Josh Moore and his team. Inside they discuss their secret to success and longevity in their industry. In Homes we featured the newly designed residence of Bestie Award winner and Owner of Details Furniture Gallery & Design, Lesa Buckler. Multiple Bestie Award winner Baptist Health/Milestone Wellness Center wrote our Health feature and elaborated on what makes Milestone unlike any other gym. In this issue, we have it all, and I know everyone included worked very hard to earn their Bestie crowns, so congratulations to you all! I’d also like to introduce you, our readers, to our new Art Director, Pascalle Ballard, who designed this beautiful December issue for us. We are excited to see what her new talents will bring to our team and the pages of The Voice in the coming months. Speaking of new beginnings, with 2021 just around the corner, Event Stylist & Planner, Giselle Smith, shared wedding trends for the upcoming year and what we can expect to see as we adjust to this “new normal.” For fashion, since we’re all dreaming of the lavish dinner parties we are accustomed to during the holiday season, we brought those parties to life and kicked it up a notch with our Dressing the Table editorial that sparkles and shines with local boutique finds. I’m going to keep my letter short and sweet this time and simply say, congratulations again to all of The Voice of Louisville 2020 Bestie Award winners and here’s to putting 2020 behind us! I can’t wait to see you in the New Year. Sincerely yours,

Elaborate & Elegant

How 2021 wedding trends are embracing smaller gatherings and focusing on the details By Giselle Smith Photos by Tracy Burch Photography

ngagement season is in full swing and 2021 is just around the corner — I can’t say I’m sad to see 2020 go! Giselle Smith here with Goldenrod + Glory Events and Lovely Leaves. I’m excited to share trends that we’ve been seeing take the stage across the U.S. wedding market.

Micro-Weddings Small, intimate ceremonies and receptions are all the rage. There’s no denying that it’s safer and easier to gather in small groups as we learn to navigate the new normal. Venues that can still accommodate large weddings despite percentage-based regulations include hotel ballrooms and convention centers. The wedding industry has done an exceptional job of pivoting through the pandemic, and we are seeing the most gorgeous tiny weddings. We consider a wedding a micro wedding if the wedding has a guest count under 50.

Backyard Venues & Private Farms Backyard soirées and elaborate farm weddings are easy with an experienced planner and fab rentals. These work well for larger events, regulations considered. Regardless of the size of your event, you’ll need a tent to protect your guests from the elements (even in warmer weather) plus tables, chairs, linens and very likely many other pretty pieces to make your day magical. Favorites in Kentucky are All Occasions (Louisville) and Bryant’s Rent-All (Lexington) for basically everything you need for the big day. Another Lexington local and boutique rental company, Canvas, carries luxury furniture — think lounge areas, bars, coffee tables, cake tables — you name it.

DECEMBER 2020

Dramatic Tablescapes What couples are saving with small guest counts, they’re spending on finer details including dreamy table decor their guests are sure to “ooh” and “aah” over. Florals have taken a modern turn with fewer greens and more blooms; sometimes these are stand-alone with candles, but using multiple arrangements to fully line tables is a stunning addition to any reception. In linens, we’re seeing a lot of velvet still, but some newer bold metallics are hitting the market, and we’re excited to see where they go. Don’t forget china, glassware and flatware.

Bright, Bold Colors & Holographic Elements Fashion and design industries seem to be pulling from 90s pop culture with nostalgic Lisa Frank-esque color palettes. The 2020 Pantone Color of the Year — Classic Blue — is finally popping up with counterpart French Blue and is perfect for the nuptials of dedicated UK fans. Pinks and purples, such as Raspberry Sorbet and Amethyst Orchid, are also projected colors for spring 2021.

Beige, Tan, Brown, Gold, Copper, Rust, Yellow and Orange — Wonderfully Warm Color Palettes Sometimes forgotten, these warm colors bring about feelings of security and comfort. Neutrals and beige are easy to tie in with mixed metals and dried florals, such as pampas grass and palms leaves. Yellows, rust, browns and oranges are naturally found in florals and wooden textures. Whether you’re going for cozy, earthy, modern, or romantic, these colors offer a shade for you and all of them photograph beautifully.

Over-the-Top Invitations Texture is trending in paper products. Wood and acrylic invitations are higher-priced pieces, but we’ve been pricing them left and right for clients. Gold foil is also popular right now. Something to be aware of is extra shipping costs associated with heavier invitations and even wax seals; I think the look and feel of luxury invitations with hand-written calligraphy are definitely worth the extra cost despite the initial sticker shock.

Small Tables Smith, table for four? In today’s world of social distancing and safety, table sizes are shrinking. For certain outdoor events, couples are keeping their large guest counts, and instead are cutting the number of guests seated at each table. Typically a 72” round table seats ten with full place settings and a 60” round or 8’ banquet table seats eight. Lately, we are having weddings with additional sizes with 48” rounds seating four to six, 36” seating three and 30” seating two.

Planning & Design: Goldenrod + Glory Floral Design: Lovely Leaves Plants: Denizen Venue: The Haycraft Dress: Twirl Lexington Suits: GenTux

Floral Installations Between micro-weddings and mixed table sizes, dollars saved on centerpieces are now going towards breathtaking floral installations. Floral installations could include dreamy ceremony arches, aisle florals growing from the floor, and flower-adorned fireplace mantles, staircases and chandeliers. Entrances with freestanding floral structures either climbing around the edges or completely around the door are sure to wow guests upon arrival.

Plated Dinners & Tasting-Style Aperitifs Dinners are moving away from buffets, stations and family-style serving to avoid guests waiting in lines. One benefit to plated meals is more time for actually enjoying the party as plated meals tend to come out faster than guests could make it through a buffet line. Menus at each place setting instantly up the ante and give guests something to look forward to as each course is served. A beautiful bar set up is one of my favorite parts of a wedding, but wine and drinks served tableside are taking precedence. A fun way to incorporate tableside drinks is to have a special drink for each course whether it be a wine pairing or a signature cocktail.

Individual Desserts & BetterThan-Ever Welcome Baskets Multi-tiered cakes adorned in sugar florals will never go out of style, but individual desserts, either at each place setting or served after dinner, are a neat way to personalize the event. We have one Lexington couple doing beignets and another couple in Louisville doing macarons for their guests. In place of traditional favors, couples are gifting big with customized welcome baskets and bags. Designing and packaging these luxe gifts is a service we have added this year.

Elevated Escort Card Displays Assigned seating is a must like never before as extra precautions must be made to limit unmasked exposure. Escort cards come in many forms. Sometimes they are actual cards that are folded and set out on a table or showcased on a backdrop accented with florals. Other times they are listed on a sign by table or in alphabetical order. Don’t shy away from creative escort displays, especially if you have a smaller guest count. Place cards (different from escort cards) are typically folded or laid flat at each place setting telling guests which seat is theirs once they find their table.

Stateside Honeymoons & National Parks Leaving the country is more difficult than before especially for couples who do not have current passports. Wait times are exceeding 6 months on updated travel documents, so many couples are choosing locations within the U.S. to honeymoon. National Parks are popular this year, particularly Yellowstone whether flying into Wyoming or Montana. Beaches will always be a go-to and most are within driving distance from Kentucky (Charleston, Savannah, Rosemary Beach). My all-time favorite vacation is Aspen for a cozy romantic getaway complete with hot tubs, skiing, couples snowmobiles, fine dining and museums. The Beauty is in the Details Interior Designer Lesa Buckler shares a preview of her newly designed home

W

By LESA BUCKLER Photos by Kathryn Harrington

e wanted a house that needed to be totally redone to become a jewel box of a home, with all the elements we love. Richard and I have always had newer and larger homes, so when we found this charming but older house in Indian Hills, we viewed it as a blank slate, knowing we would get to make it truly what we wanted. We have literally touched every single surface in the process. I constantly compile files of design ideas, so when I get to bite into a new project like this one, the first thing I do is pull out the files and begin composing classic, beautiful, comfortable spaces. When it comes to designing my own home, I’m a

maximalist: more is more. However, the space to be designed dictates how to use patterns, colors and prints so as not to be overwhelming. With not as many open spaces, older homes need to have rooms that stand on their own, but with a thread that binds them together. We began opening up the house by building an addition that doubled the kitchen’s size with wide French doors that lead out onto the pool deck. Richard’s expertise is designing amazing kitchens and baths, so I gave him ideas and a look book of everything I envisioned, and he made it happen! He oversaw all the construction, including a new master bath, his and her custom closets, a new powder room, expanding the pool decks, roofing, landscaping, tree removal, railings, expanding driveways

and so many other things. It truly has been a labor of love. I describe my style as a modern take on traditional, infused with lots of color and glamour. Everything I design has a classical foundation, and I believe in using pieces, structure and finishes that will stand the test of time rather than anything that is too of the moment. Design aspects that I enjoy implementing are heirloom and antique pieces when they work, great lighting, which becomes like jewelry for a room, velvet upholstery and lots of color accents that heighten visual interest. It’s important to live your daily life but understand that you never have to sacrifice style to do so. For example, having a pool means people, pets and parties, so we made sure the surfaces on everything are very durable and beautiful. For example, the Ralph Lauren indoor/outdoor fabric for the barstools around a large island means no fading, and they simply wipe clean! There are many favorite design elements in this house, such as the painted ceiling in the sunroom, which is wonderful with the checked tile floor and the palm tree drapery surrounding the room. I also had the kitchen floor painted high gloss black and trimmed entirely with a white Greek Key pattern. The Jim Thompson fabric used for the dining room window treatments brings pattern and art to the space. I painted the dining room pink and included pink velvet captains’ chairs to accompany my velvet and leopard

monogrammed dining chairs we’ve had for years and I still adore. The ceiling is papered in a checkered pattern with metallic gold and silver grasscloth. I know not everyone would paint a dining room pink, but hey, I’m a designer and it’s such a fun and festive room. The formal living room boasts a turquoise velvet sofa trimmed with Greek Key and bullion fringe. Again, Jim Thompson fabric frames the windows, the Italian burl wood table is from the Design Center of the Americas in Miami, the oil above the fireplace hung in Richard’s childhood home and is by Florida artist Harold Newton of the renowned Highwaymen. All is watched over by the keen eye of the hand-painted ceramic tiger I purchased at the Nashville Antique and Garden show from a Palm Beach dealer. I have collected Hermès scarves for years and decided to frame and hang some of my favorites along the stairway and upstairs hallway so I could enjoy them every day. One of the

upstairs guest baths has my favorite palm leaf paper, which was going out of production, so I bought the last rolls of it years ago, even before I knew where to use it. I loved it and bought all that was left. When I was planning the design for the bath, I pulled it out, and fortunately, it matched perfectly with the existing tile, and we had just enough to do the walls and the ceiling. The master bedroom has a soft palette of cream, gold and black that is easy on the eye and incredibly soothing to the senses, which is wonderful when trying to unwind from the day and relax. With all the design, colors, projects and business we do throughout our day, it’s lovely to end the day in a calming space. The master bath has simple Carrara marble with the Greek Key design, which is timeless, and a free-standing soaker tub. The window fabric is Schumacher, and the art is by artist Mary Hong. I use the Greek Key motif throughout our home, and it’s in almost every room. It’s on drapery, furniture, flooring, vanities and

even highball glasses. The Greek Key is a symbol of the eternal flow of things or infinity; I like that thought and believe it brings good energy to our home. When I was asked by The Voice what my favorite aspect of this house is, it was easy to answer: the location. Each of our daughters are five minutes away, the wonderful trees and rolling landscape make it like living in a park, the perfect neighborhood and people and we get to make our house just what we want. Is a house ever really complete? I think not, so work continues on this house, as we are currently adding a larger front porch, a circular driveway, more landscaping and a new outdoor kitchen. Whether it’s our Louisville home, another vacation home, clients’ homes or even the Details showroom, projects like these make me happy and energized. Richard says I’m never happier than when I have a new project. V

The Voice of Louisville’s 2020 Bestie Awards

F

or the second year in a row, The Voice of Louisville is pleased to share the winners of the Bestie Awards, chosen by you, encompassing all of Louisville’s favorites. Voting for the Besties opened on our website in September and with the assistance of a thirdparty company, we tallied the thousands of responses to give you the best of what Louisville has to offer. If you took the time to vote, you may notice several categories from the original ballot do not appear on these pages. These sections were omitted due to a lack of votes. Some categories do or don’t have runners up for this same reason. Longtime Voice readers may recall voting for Best Dressed in an annual competition hosted by the magazine in the early 2000s, so we couldn’t resist including that category in the lineup. See page 87 to get a closer look at winners Raquel Koff and Jeff Hunter. Each of these winners was selected by you – the readers who took the time to vote for the best businesses, organizations and people in our community. Thank you for being part of the 2020 Bestie Awards, and congratulations to all of the winners!

Living with cancer is not a choice, but HOW you live with it is. Living life with style and purpose, with meaning and joy, and with laughter while cancer is a part of it, is what Gilda’s Club is all about. The symptoms families on a cancer journey experience, such as fear, anxiety, helplessness and depression, are treated at Gilda’s Club with critical social and emotional support. Our goal is to transform the way families LIVE with cancer.

As the only International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP) Early Years school in the state, our fundamental approach is focused on IB’s dynamic cycle of inquiry, action and reflection. Our curriculum is student-centered and promotes each student’s social, emotional, academic, spiritual and physical growth. Children are empowered to explore their curiosities with a strong emphasis on problem-solving, divergent thinking, cooperative group work and social responsibility. These experiences give children a chance to do what they excel in, learn through play!

Christ Church School is an outreach of Christ Church United Methodist and founded on the belief that every child is a blessing to us and to others. Our success stems from dedicated teachers, strong leadership and the support of our community. We follow the Kentucky Early Childhood Standards and offer a rich curriculum that develops children’s minds, bodies and spirits. It is our goal that during our brief but important time in children’s lives, the stage will be set for a lifetime love of learning.

Louisville is that nice blend of Southern charm and Northern efficiency, both reflected on the 40-acre campus of The Forum at Brookside. It’s where neighbors still visit over lemonade on a sunny Sunday afternoon and where families participate in the annual Labor Day picnic on the shaded grounds. It’s where a family can get their questions about their loved ones answered by a patient professional with 25 years of experience and where a resident can feel assured that their independence is respected and they can age in place.

On behalf of the animals served by the Kentucky Humane Society, I am honored that KHS was named a finalist for Best Nonprofit and Best Doggie Day Care! KHS has been around since 1884 and is Kentucky’s favorite place to adopt a companion animal. Thanks to the compassion we see every day in Louisville, KHS finds homes for over 6,000 dogs, cats and horses a year. I’m proud of the many services we provide our community. Thanks to people who donate and use our services, KHS is here for needy companion animals and the people who love them. We truly couldn’t do it without you!

- Alisa Gray Vice President of Animal Welfare of Kentucky Humane Society

What started with morning dog walks through the park between two friends turned into a business partnership for Missy Webb and Lana Franczek. In May 2020, we joined hands with Stan Franczek to purchase the Happy Hounds Doggie Daycare and Boarding. We felt like we could turn the facility into a better safer place for the dogs and a happier, cleaner environment for the employees. We love all of our dogs like babies. It is great to see them come in as puppies and grow with us. Happy Hounds is like a second home for a lot of our dogs. We look forward to growing and continuing to improve.

Media Best Radio Host - Woman

I started in radio at 19 years old and fell in love with the idea of playing my favorite music and making people laugh! I think the secret to my success is authenticity. I’ve never tried to create a character. I am who I am on the air. I think that has helped me connect with the audience and become a part of their daily routine. We get to know so many of our regulars and they become like cast members on the show. This community really cares about local things and we talk about things happening here. I love that we can have an impact on local organizations like Norton Children’s Hospital by shining our spotlight on them.

Of course, we cover U of L football and men’s basketball and those are the focus, but we also stay on top of baseball and women’s basketball, along with other sports. We have purchased several homes in the past and worked with many different agents; however, Ryan far exceeded our expectations and has been -by far- the best agent we have ever experienced. He is knowledgeable, professional, and well-respected within the industry. – Jeremy + Lori Ryan is always on top of things, always accessible, always working on our behalf and highly capable. His professionalism and candor are much appreciated. We are grateful for his hard work. – Amy Ryan was prompt, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable! He was very well connected and helped everything run smoothly especially during a global pandemic. – Rob Ryan communicated with us every step of the way. When Leaudra and Walter Kern and their son George, created the very first Derby-Pie® in 1954 at the Melrose Inn in Prospect, KY, a great tradition was born out of that secret recipe: Kern’s Kitchen. Of course, Derby-Pie® chocolate nut pie is what we’re best known for, and rightfully so. For over 60 years it has embodied everything we believe in, handcrafted quality, Kentucky heritage and the simple pleasures of homemade. After all, we were artisanal, small-batch bakers before anyone even knew what the heck that meant. And we’ll stay that way, one pie at a time.

It’s always a thrill to learn that you are appreciated, especially as we enter our 20th year in business here at Digs Home and Garden. We’ve always tried to listen to the voice of our customers, tailoring our products and services to meet their needs. Local businesses can excel at listening and adapting so much quicker than larger competitors. We know we can’t always win on the price proposition, but given the opportunity to meet or beat an offer, we will try every time. We do know we can ALWAYS win at the service side of the business. Every member of our team is empowered to make sure our customers feel welcome, appreciated and satisfied.

When we moved from the Waterfront to our new home on Breckinridge Street, we wanted to cater to everyone so we have something for everyone. My partner and I enjoy picking and selling, and we love encouraging others to reuse and recycle. We have over 90 vendors selling vintage clothes, vinyl, books, mid-century, antiques, industrial and so much more. It’s an upbeat place where we constantly encourage good vibes and an upbeat atmosphere. We are expanding in January and plan on incorporating an event space for record shows, used book sales, mid-century shows and more.

or many years, The Voice of Louisville hosted an iconic fashion event and competition centered around Louisville’s best dressed couples and individuals. While the event no longer takes place, we once again couldn’t resist including Best Dressed as a category in The Voice of Louisville’s 2020 Bestie Awards. The readers have spoken and selected Raquel Koff, President and Owner of Rodeo Drive as Best Dressed Woman and Jeff Hunter, formerly with Rodes For Him For Her and now with Glasscock/ Glasscock Too, as Best Dressed Man. Both winners, while fabulously dressed at all times, have both been in the local fashion business for a long time, so it’s no wonder their show-stopping looks caught the attention of our readers! Congratulations to Raquel and Jeff!

Raised in the South, I was taught the importance of dressing for any occasion. Whether at a formal event or the grocery store, I see any outfit as an opportunity for self-expression. My style is inspired by influential women, such as Jackie Onassis and Audrey Hepburn. My look is a male version of their classic styles with an edgy twist. In crafting a style, my advice is to dress to your personality. Whatever look inspires you, it’s important to feel comfortable and present the best version of yourself.

- Jeff Hunter

I am honored to be selected as the Best Dressed Woman for The Voice of Louisville’s 2020 Bestie Awards. To me, fashion and style have always been intertwined and a part of who I am. Clothes have the ability to make you feel beautiful, confident and powerful. Fashion is the best way to express who you are without saying a word.

THE VOICE OF LOUISVILLE

| VO I C E -T R I B U N E . C O M

Are you feeling stuck when it comes to your fitness goals? Maybe you used to be super active and you’ve all of a sudden hit a slump. Or maybe you’re recovering from an injury and feeling defeated. I’ll bet at some point you’ve looked in the mirror and felt like it was time to make time for YOU. Milestone can help! When it comes to health and wellness, there are so many different reasons why people struggle. Trust me, I know. I can confidently say that at Baptist Health/Milestone Wellness Center, we’re the perfect fit for anyone looking to take control of their health and wellness needs. I am so proud to be writing this article on behalf of this amazing club and I can’t wait to tell you about Louisville’s best-kept fitness secret. As a relatively young person, I can tell you that I too have tried many other options, but struggled to find the right place for me. I was lucky enough to become the Marketing Director for the club this past spring, and not only did I find the right fit employment wise, but found the right club for my own fitness needs. Why is Milestone the best? I could fill this entire magazine but I’ll keep it straight-forward. We offer five-star quality service in every area of our club. Though we had to quickly adapt given the recent restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are proud to still be able to keep our standards of excellence higher than ever for our members. Prior to the pandemic, we were nationally recognized for cleanliness by our members and it has always DECEMBER 2020

been a top priority. Of course, during the current pandemic, we continue to make this our number one priority by making the necessary changes and precautions to keep our members and staff safe. Though we may look a little different during this time, some things haven’t changed, like the fact that our club is still the perfect fit for any fitness level. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, just looking to get “fit-ish,” or you’re training for a triathlon, you’ll find what you’re looking for at Milestone. We’re a one-stop-shop for EVERYTHING health and wellness, and it’s all top-of-the-line.

Milestone Amenities: · Fully equipped fitness center that once again won the 2020 Voice Bestie Award for Best Fitness Studio · Top-of-the-line cycling studio that won 2020 Voice Bestie Runner Up for Best Cycling Studio · Nationally recognized aquatic center featuring a sixlane lap pool, warm water therapy pool, relaxing jacuzzi, group aquatic exercise classes, aquatic personal training and more! · Nationally recognized HMR® weight-loss program offering virtual and in-person group classes · Personal training, both one-on-one and small group personal training (we have over 60 amazing personal trainers to fit any fitness level and need) · Pilates Reformer personal training

When Milestone Fitness Center opened in 1984, the focus was on building a community around health and wellness, and it worked. In 1998, the process of expanding began and the idea of partnering with a hospital was introduced which was a new concept in the fitness industry at that time. The perfect partnership was found in Baptist Health Louisville. Through our partnership, we have been able to house a physical therapy clinic that is convenient for our members and their patients. They utilize the pools to do water therapy as well as our fitness equipment. It is amazing to see how we have grown while currently celebrating our 20-year partnership with Baptist Health Louisville. At the heart of who we are as a club, we are a community. While there is no doubt we have an amazing staff and facility that is topof-the-line, we know that what keeps our business thriving is the community that has been built within our walls. In my opinion, that is what makes the difference in why people stay and why they see such amazing results. When you become a member, we pair you with a fitness coach that shows you around and helps you find the best fit for your physical activity needs. Your coach continues to check in with you on your progress and helps you with any challenges you may be experiencing. This coach becomes a familiar face around the club for our members to be able to go to with any questions or concerns. Baptist Health/Milestone Wellness Center has developed into a community of people who come together to support and grow towards a common goal of being the best version of themselves inside and out. From the group exercise buddies to the group of men we see meeting in our cafe for fellowship, our members find support from each other. The best part is we’re ready to welcome ANYONE in. I can guarantee you there is a place for you at Baptist Health/Milestone Wellness Center! V

· Oasis Spa services: massage, facials, waxing, skincare and nail services · Corporate wellness programs · Group exercise classes including Barre Pilates, yoga and TRX, to high-intensity interval classes, hip-hop and Tai Chi · Full-service cafe serving everything from protein shakes and smoothies to tacos and spaghetti · Child care available

Community is so important in Louisville. People want to know their neighbors, they want to shop local and they want to support one another. If you deliver a quality product at a fair price and offer the best customer service, you will have a client for life. This shapes so much of what we do and how we treat people. Our clients are our friends and in so many cases, they feel like family. And this year in particular, when so many of them had to make hard decisions due to the pandemic, they stuck by us and we will be forever grateful.

Like so many small businesses in Louisville, 502 Power Yoga was created to fill a void. Now, nearly seven years later after its founding, “Vinyasa Yoga” is a common class but 502 Power Yoga continues to stand apart because we are so much more than just a yoga studio. We are a community of people who are up to something much bigger than just a physical practice. Sure, we are stronger, more flexible and less reactive than we would be without our practice, but we consider those to be merely side effects of what we are truly up to at 502PY: Transformation, inspiration and empowerment.

Vittoria Per Volare

Volare Italian Ristorante wins four 2020 Bestie Awards By Elizabeth Scinta Photos by Dan Dry

V

olare Italian Ristorante has been one of my family’s staple restaurants for as long as I can remember, so it was no surprise that they won four Besties in The Voice of Louisville’s 2020 Bestie Awards. Volare took the cake on Best Date Spot, Best Dinner Spot, Best Restaurant to See and Be Seen and Chef Josh Moore won Best Chef. I had the pleasure of interviewing Executive Chef and Managing Partner Josh Moore and the General Manager and Managing Partner Jonathan Tarullo to learn a little bit more about them and Volare. Moore has been working in Louisville’s restaurant industry for 27 years, floating in and out of different Italian restaurants. “I always wanted to cook from an early age. I would stand on a chair by the stove with my grandmothers and watch them cook and learn,” Moore explained. “My mom said I was so fascinated by cooking that she would sit me down in front of cartoons at the preschool/ kindergarten age, and she’d come back and I’d be watching a cooking show. So, I guess I was always fascinated.” His love and excitement for cooking are seen in the dishes he makes and the effort he puts into the restaurant itself. Moore owns a farm in Taylorsville, KY, where he grows produce and vegetables for Volare; this shows just how unique Volare is. “In our restaurant [we have] first-class service and first-class ingredients. That starts with Chef Josh Moore working on his farm to bring in the best vegetables and the best produce that we could get,” Tarullo said. His dedication to serving nothing but the best is why Chef Josh Moore was named Best Chef in Louisville. Moore explained that he couldn’t have the success he’s

experiencing now if it wasn’t for the help of Tarullo and the rest of the Volare staff. “I tell people all the time we make such a great team. We both have very different roles in the restaurant, but we come together and meet in the middle and everything flows so well together. Both of us have great relationships with guests. It’s more

about the working of the restaurant, the level of service; you [should] always feel like you’re welcome and you’re important and you’re part of the Volare family when you come in, and that’s a big thing that Jonathan does great,” Moore said. Both were thrilled about Volare winning four Bestie Awards and explained to me why they think Volare won Best Date Spot and Best Dinner Spot. For Moore, it’s the variety of options on the menu, the service and Volare’s ambiance. For Tarullo, it’s the guests’ ability to choose a casual or fancier dining experience. “You can have a very formal setting or a very casual setting. So I think what appeals to a guy or girl that would come in here on a date would be the type of situation. They can have cocktails and wine and hors d’oeuvres in the bar area, or they can have a more formal setting and a white tablecloth dinner at a quiet table in the corner [with] intimate candlelight. We offer a few different scenarios and I think that’s what appeals to everyone,” Tarullo explained. Since the shutdown, Tarullo and Moore were working on creating an online ordering system that became available in early 100

November. Available on their website, guests can order for curbside pickup or delivery right to their home. “We’re really trying to bring the Volare experience to you at home,” Moore said. Unsure what to order? Consider some of Moore’s favorite dishes like the Beef Carpaccio appetizer and the Osso Buco Milanese. You can even add a Manhattan cocktail to complete the meal. Tarullo prefers the Linguini Frutti Di Mare with a glass of Quilt Cabernet Sauvignon. As 2020 comes to an end, Tarullo wants to continue to help families come together during this difficult time. “Obviously, it’s a different situation this year, but bringing families together and allowing Volare to host and take part in those special memories is what it’s all about.” V Volare Italian Ristorante 2300 Frankfort Ave. Louisville, KY 40206 Volare-restaurant.com 502.894.4446

Celebration of Life

Joan Stevens Bingham 1935 - 2020 By Keith L. Runyon Photos provided by The Courier Journal Joan Bingham, widow of the scion of Louisville’s Bingham family communications empire and a major force for nearly 50 years in the book publishing world, died on October 31, 2020 in New York City, where she made her home. She was 85 years old. “The Bingham family was one of the great multigenerational newspaper ownership stories, and she was an important part of it,” recalled David Hawpe, former vice president and editor of The Courier Journal. Her direct role with the newspapers, and Louisville, came with her marriage in 1960 to Robert Worth Bingham III, eldest son of Barry Bingham Sr., and his wife, Mary. Joan Williamson Stevens was born March 5, 1935, and she grew up in Sewickley, Pennsylvania, a conservative and wealthy suburb of Pittsburgh. A graduate of Miss Porter’s School and Connecticut College, she met Worth Bingham at the Chatham Bars Inn on Cape Cod, where both of their families summered. They renewed their friendship when he was a young reporter with The San Francisco Chronicle and she was a student at the California School of Fine Arts. After they wed, they settled in Washington during the Kennedy administration, where Worth Bingham was a prize-winning writer in the Washington bureau of The Courier Journal. In 1962, they moved to Louisville, where Worth Bingham took an increasingly important role as an administrator, rising to the position of assistant to the publisher. Joan Bingham, meanwhile, gave birth to two children, Clara and Robert “Rob” Worth Bingham IV. Her work outside the home focused on arts (including working with the Speed Art Museum) and education. She was a co-founder of Louisville’s first Montessori School. In the memories of those who were with them in the 1960s, they were a very popular couple with many friends. One of them was the late Courier Journal cartoonist Hugh Haynie, whose wife, Lois, recalled their rollicking times. So did Charles Whaley, then education editor of The Courier Journal, whose wife, Carol Sutton, would in time become the first female managing editor of a major American newspaper. “Carol and I enjoyed our times with Joan and Worth. They were always such fun at parties here,” Whaley recalled. Anne Thompson Moore Ronald of Louisville, then married to Glenmore Distilleries 120

President Frank Thompson III, recalled Joan Bingham as “a great gal. We both had the same fake sapphire rings from Ciro’s jewelry store in New York City and would tease each other that it takes a fake owner to know one. I still have mine.” In July 1966, the course of Joan Bingham’s life was upended with the death of her husband, then 34, in an automobile accident on Nantucket, Massachusetts. A young widow with a baby and a toddler, she set a course in various forms of journalism. She moved with Clara and Robbie to New York City’s Upper West Side and jumped into the literary world. After ventures in Washington and in Paris, she became the catalyst for the merger that created Grove Atlantic publishing house and for three decades was its executive editor. Over the years, according to Elizabeth Schmitz, editorial director at Grove and a friend for a quarter of a century, Bingham acquired and edited more than 100 titles in fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Grove Atlantic was known for its prestigious authors, among them Kiran Desai, Kay Ryan, David Von Drehle and Claire Keegan. “She was the irrepressible host of hundreds of dinners for Grove’s authors, booksellers and international publishers,” Schmitz told The New York Times. Bingham retained her ties to Louisville as a board member of the Bingham companies, which, after internal family strife, were sold to Gannett Co. in 1986. Over the years, Bingham supported many charitable organizations, especially the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, where she was a member of the board. She also created the Worth Bingham Prize in Investigative Journalism, a field for which she held an “inspirations commitment to investigative journalism, which Worth himself had done in The Courier Journal’s Washington bureau,” said Hawpe, who has served as judge for that award over the years. Both of her children grew up to succeed in reporting and writing: Clara York Bingham is married to Joseph G. Finnerty III and is the author, most recently, of “Witness to the Revolution,” an oral history about the Vietnam era. Robert Worth Bingham IV reported for The New Yorker and died in 1999 of an apparent drug overdose at age 33. His fame rose posthumously with the publication of “Lightning on the Sun” in 2000. Joan Bingham’s three grandchildren, Jamie, Henry and Diana Michaelis, also survive. The family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to the Robin Hood COVID19 response fund or by mail to Robin Hood, 826 Broadway, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10003. Bingham will be buried next to her husband in Louisville’s Cave Hill Cemetery.
