There’s no denying that Kentucky Derby 145 will go down in the history books because of the unprecedented outcome of the Run for the Roses. In case you missed the controversy: Longshot Country House (65-1) was declared the winner of the race following “an inquiry ruling” and subsequent disqualification of the favorite, Maximum Security (4-1), who crossed the finish line first – the first time for such a ruling. Stewards spent nearly 20 minutes going over video of the race after objections were filed claiming the horse had interfered with the paths of multiple horses. Ultimately, Country House, jockey Flavien Prat and trainer Bill Mott rode away with the garland of roses, $1.86 million and a bittersweet victory that is sure to be debated for years. But, as much as the ruling will linger in the court of public opinion, for many of us, there are far more reasons to remember the 2019 Kentucky Derby and festivities. Thanks to an early Thunder Over Louisville because Easter landed much later than usual, our community spent three weeks – instead of the usual two – enmeshed in Derby season, the time of year that brings out the best
in everyone. Once again, The Voice team collectively photographed and spoke with hundreds of people during this span. We were regaled with stories of how the Derby serves as family tradition, a place for joyful reunions with friends, an outlet to enjoy fashion and, on occasion, an opportunity to declare your love. Caleb Shoup did just that when he proposed to Allie Klika in the Winner’s Circle on Oaks Day. The Voice Photographer Kathryn Harrington captured the proposal of the newly-engaged couple whose image is featured on our cover. Allie was truly taken by surprise, confirmed Kathryn. “She had no clue – and Caleb and her family had been planning for months.” Sometimes, the sweetest things are the unplanned ones. At least they’re often the most memorable. Here’s to what happens next – and to Derby 2020, too. Truly,

he 32nd Annual Taste of Derby Festival presented by BrownForman took place at Louisville Slugger Field on April 9. he eyes of the world were on Louisville as the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby took place at Churchill Downs on May 4. The race results took an unprecedented turn after Maximum Security crossed the finish line first but was disqualified following an interference and objection from other riders. The garland of roses and $3,000,000 purse instead went to Country House led by jockey Flavien Prat, trained by William I. Mott and owned by Maury Shields, Guinness McFadden, Larry Foxwood, Nanci Foxwood and Jamie Roth.
