Retiree group to have Aug. 6 meeting Public Employee Retirees, P.E.R.I Chapter 18, will meet on Aug. 6 at 12 p.m. at the Avion Banquet Center, located at 2177 Western Reserve Road. Lunch will be served at noon for a cost of $13. There will be a 50/50 raffle. A social worker for elder abuse from the Adult Protective Services of Mahoning County will be the guest speaker. Reservations can be made by July 30 with Ceil Kidd at 330-533-2149, Helen Verdream at 330-6298227 or Mary Grace Welsh at 330-743-8425. Information and updates with proposed changes from the State to the O.P.E.R.S. health/pension benefits will be discussed. Retirees and public employees under O.P.E.R.S. are invited to attend. The schedule for upcoming meetings/ luncheons for 2019 will be Oct. 1 and Dec. 3 at 12 p.m. at the Avion Banquet Center. During the meetings throughout the year, the P.E.R.I. officers will continue to provide information to the members with our O.P.E.R.S health and pension benefits updates, and various guest speakers. They welcome O.P.E.R.S. retirees and employees to join Chapter 18 for a $10 yearly membership fee, which can be paid at the meetings. Spouses can join as associate members for $5 yearly fee.

Jungle Terry’s Traveling Zoo performed at the Poland library on July 16. More than 70 children and their families gathered at the library for the performance. Terry said that it was a special show, premiering his newest animal an albino hedgehog.

“We just got this cutie three days ago,” Terry said. “But she already loved to be around people.” Throughout the show, Terry brought out a number of his exotic pets to show the community members gathered. Terr y broug ht a Chinese silky chicken from Asia, a tree frog from Australia, an albino skunk from North American

and many more. As he brought out each of the animals, Terry told the children facts about the animals natural habitats and mannerisms. He explained how skunks use their claws to dig for bugs to eat, and how tree frogs feel slimy because they use their bodies to cling to trees. Terry also brought up volun-

teers from the audience to hold certain animals. He allowed everyone who wanted to pet his pet turtle and snake as well. Local music combo to play in the park On Aug. 5, the Jim Frank Combo will perform in Canfield on the green beginning at 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. The band will play a variety of songs and also take requests. In case of rain, the venue will be at the First Methodist church across from the gazebo.

This event, which will take place every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m. at the Poland library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Mushroom guru - Walt Sturgeon Mushroom guru and author Walt Sturgeon will present on the myriad colors, forms and habitats of our native macro fungi on Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Edible and toxic species will be shown. Folklore and examples of bioluminescent species, insectivorous fungi and hallucinogenic mushrooms will also be presented. Sturgeon is a member and trustee of the Ohio Mushroom Society, which has been affiliated with the North American Mycological Association since 1982. This event is for adults.

Sunrise Senior Living in Poland hosted its annual Fourth of July party on July 1. Activities Coordinator Kitty Leonelli organized the event for residents and community members. “It’s just a fun day time event for the residents to get together and celebrate the holiday,” Leonelli said. Ky mberlie Stutz, a board member of the organization, sa id t hat t he g roup works alongside Irish families to have students spend a month in the U.S. with local American stu-

dents. Stutz said that the group does a number of service projects throughout their time here, but this is the first time they have worked with Sunrise. Students sat with residents and enjoyed the music and food, keeping them company throughout the party. “It’s just a way to get them out and to have new experiences,” Stutz said. “We are very excited to team up with Sunrise.” Sunrise Senior Living will host another event for residents on July 17, with its Elvis in the House party.

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financialbased scholarships. Teens and tweens gathered at the Canfield library to create glow in the dark jars on June 29. A manda Kollar, assistant supervisor, youth librarian, hosted the creative evening for chi ldren enter ing f if t h grade and up. Participants used special glow in the dark paint on the inside of mason jars to create their masterpieces. They could then use jewels to decorate the lid and outside of the jars. “I thought this would be a fun summer craft to do. It allows everyone to show off their creativity and design their jars however they want. Everyone did a really good job today,” Kollar said. Students Motivated by the Arts is “Making Summer Workshops.” These new, short, one-week workshops will give children the opportunity to meet new people, and experiment with visual art, music, dance, theater or creative writing. The workshops are taught using the approach of arts integration, so it will challenge them to explore the world, look at different topics and find ways to pull inspiration from other subjects. The Poland library hosted an event for teenagers to learn about the different materials used to construct cosplay armor. Librarian Annette Ahrens hosted the event with 10 teenagers in attendance. “I really thought this would be a cool thing to try,” she said. Cosplay is the art of creating a personalized costume to match a fictional character. Ahrens explained that the hobby has grown in popularity in recent years.

“A lot of people like it, myself included,” she said. “But often it’s hard to know where to start.”’ Ahrens explained that the two main materials used in armor construction are Worbla and Wonderflex, which are both thermoplastics. She showed teenagers gathered at the event how to use a heat gun, or a hair dryer, to heat the material. “Once it’s heated you can bend and shape it however you need to, and as soon as it cools down it remains in that shape,” Ahrens said. She passed out free online

guides to creating your own armor to the group. After Ahrens’s demonstration each participant was able to use a piece of Worbla to design their own arm band.

The Oakland Center for the Arts Kids First Theatre Initiative performed “Rumpelstiltskin” for community members at the Boardman library. Performers were members of the PB&J players, a group of young actors who put on plays for children. During the show four actors portrayed the characters of Rumpelstiltskin, the king, Lilly and her mother.

Children gathered in the audience participate in the play as well. Actors worked with the crowd to create back round noises and respond to cues. More than 50 children and their families gathered at the library to watch the show. Along with Boardman the group will travel to a number of branches to perform the play.
