Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley earns 2019 Emergency Nurses Association award Akron Children’s Hospital’s emergency department located on the Beeghly campus in Boardman has been selected as a recipient of the Emergency Nurses Association’s 2019 Lantern Award for demonstrating exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research. Akron Children’s Lantern Award will be on display in the emergency department. As a recipient, Akron Children’s will be recognized in upcoming ENA publications, on the ENA website and at Emergency Nursing 2019, the association’s annual conference, in Austin, Texas. Boardman Park’s Independence Day concert and fireworks rescheduled Boardman Park’s Independence Day concert and fireworks display has been rescheduled for July 27 at the Maag Theatre. The Youngstown Area Community Concert Band will perform at 8 p.m. and will be followed by a spectacular fireworks display by Phantom Fireworks. The Youngstown Area Community Concert Band will be performing some well-known and favorite patriotic tunes. Bring lawn chairs or blankets. Boardman Park is an alcoholfree park. Boardman library hosts carnival games night By JESSICA HARKER jharker@vindy.com
The Boardman library hosted an indoor carnival games night July 11. Children’s librarian Karen Saunders said that the games were a mixture of purchased games and homemade.
“We wanted to do the games outside along with the petting zoo but the weather didn’t cooperate,” Saunders said. As children attended the event they got a tickets at a table at the door. Children could spend as long as they wanted playing games around the library’s meeting
room. “They’re fun, it’s just a fun thing for families to be able to come do at the library,” Saunders said. Games included bowling, dart throwing, hula hooping, ring toss and more. After they finished playing the games children were able to turn in their tickets for a
number of prizes. They could choose from a kazoo, water gun, water bottle, or a sand shovel all provided by the library. Saunders said the petting zoo was rescheduled for October 11. For more information on this or other upcoming library events go to www.libraryvisit.org.

Beeghly Oa ks celebrated Community Day on June 19. Community members mingled with residents and employees of Beeghly Oaks to enjoy a day of food and entertainment. “It’s not celebrating anything special, just a fun thing we like to do to get the community involved,” said Traci McCoy, recreation director. During the day, vendors set up shop outside of the building. Representatives from Mary Kay, Tupperware, Patriot Home Care and others lined the side walk outside of the facility. Beeghly Oaks also had food trucks available for the community to purchase from. The trucks, The Little Red Food Truck and Food Crusier, also provided vouchers for residents and employees of Beeghly Oaks. “We wanted everyone to have a variety of things for people to do throughout the inside and outside of the building,” McCoy said. Eric Thompson, a comedian and magician, also performed for community members gathered at the event. Thompson performed magic tricks and included humorous quips during his performance. “We try to have community events a couple of times a year,” McCoy said. “Everyone always looks forward to it.”

American Association of University Women of Youngstown recently donated money to SMARTS to support some of their programs for girls. Students Motivated by the Arts is “Making Summer Workshops.” These new, short, one-week workshops will give children the opportunity to meet new people, and experiment with visual art, music, dance, theater or creative writing. The workshops are taught using the approach of arts integration, so it will challenge them to explore the world, look at different topics and find ways to pull inspiration from other subjects. AAUW has a mission to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research. They have been empowering women since 1881. ‘Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies’

Newcomers of Mahoning Valley recently donated to the “Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies” program supported by Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio. The program assists high-risk, pregnant women in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties. The focus of the program is to encourage early and consistent prenatal care making sure their babies are healthy and happy. The program helps mothers purchase much-needed items like disposable diapers, formula, baby bottles, WRTA passes for prenatal and well-child appointments, newborn clothing and blankets, and maternity clothing for the mother. Newcomers also made a donation to the Youngstown Symphony in honor of one of their members who died recently, Barb Huberty. Michael Shorthouse and his wife Lori Shorthouse posed with Boardman staff and students, including teacher Dave Pavlansky on May 23 after receiving his diploma. Pavlansky assisted Shorthouse in getting the 1/2 credit he needed to receive his diploma after Shorthouse dropped out of school before graduating to serve in Iraq. Mill Creek Park hosted their annual Park Pals summer camp for 5- and 6-year-olds. Naturalist Marilyn Williams hosted the week long day camp for 12 children. “The park has been doing the camps for a long time. It’s a good way to get children out of the house and off of the elec-
tronics,” Williams said. The theme of the week was “Where the Critters Are,” which Williams said focused on different animals and their habitats around the park. “We have a lot of beautiful sights around the park, and even in a week we don’t have enough time to explore them all,” Williams said. During the week Williams said that the group visited the
Lily Pond, Bears Creek and the Old Log Cabin among others. She said that each day started with coloring before hiking into nature to explore the different habitats. “At this age the goal is to expose them to what the park has to offer, and to impart the importance of habitat maintenance,” Williams said. Children spent the week looking at birds, searching for box
turtles and finding salamanders. “At this age many of the kids are shy at first,” Williams said. “But they get more comfortable as the week goes on.” She said that a long w ith learning about the park and its inhabitants, an important part of the camp is making friends. The week ended with a special boat ride on Lake Glacier. “By the end of the week chil-
dren don’t want to go home from the park, and the encourage their families to come back throughout the summer,” Williams said. The Astro Falcons 14U baseball team won the Youngstown Class B League Championship on July 7.
