C a r d i n a l Mo one y H i g h School hosted a retirement luncheon for teachers on June 4. The event honored Nancy Shugart, who was retiring after teaching at the school for 41 years. “Every year was a new year because you start out with new students,” Shugart said. “My contact was unbelievable with the number of kids I saw.” Shugart taught theology at the school, which was a quarter course and was required for every student at Mooney. She said that because of this she saw almost every student to pass through the walls of the school, including 13 of her nieces and nephews. Shugart also coached the track team for years, and took statistics for the football team for 25 years. During her time as coach, Shugart said that the team went to state every year, winning their events. “We wouldn’t just go down their and play around, we have to win our events and then we would have fun,” Shugart said.

To honor Shugart’s last year of teaching Mayor Jamael Brown visited the school. “Thank you for your years of service,” Brown said. “Our schools are nothing without dedicated teachers like you.” Along with the Mayor, motivational speaker, and friend of Shugart’s, Dave Kahoots also talked about the impact she had on the students. “Education is the key and
the foundation,” Kahoots said. “Nancy is the person who unlocks that door.” A number of honors and awa rds were bestowed on Shugart during the event for her many years of service. But Shugart said it just feels like another end of the school year. “I am looking for ward to getting rid of all of my school clothes,” Shugart said. “I am go-
ing to bag them all up and send them to Good Will.” She said that her plans for retirement were to enjoy more time with her family, including her seven brothers and sisters and their children. “I am grateful for all of the kind words I have received,” Shugart said. “I got tons of ema ils from past students who graduated from Cardinal Mooney.”

Secure drug disposal now offered at Akron Children’s in Boardman Akron Children’s Hospital is now collecting unused prescription medications in a secure dropbox at the Beeghly Campus in Boardman. The hospital recently installed the collection box that is part of the LifeInCheck Consumer Drug TakeBack program. It’s located at 6505 Market St. in the lobby of Building A. While many communities participate in annual drug collection events, having the receptacle available permanently will allow Akron Children’s to provide the public with an easily accessible site to dispose of unwanted prescription and over-thecounter medications. Accepted in the dropbox are unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications
and pet medications. Not accepted are illegal drugs, inhalers, needles, liquids and lotions. For more information, call 330-746-8700.
Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15 The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole fourperson scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Gamblers Anonymous Meetings If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.
Summer Discovery Program Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. The officers and council of the Boardman High School Alumni Association recently announced the selections for the 10th annual BHS Distinguished Alumni award. The purpose of the award is to recognize outstanding alumni of Boardman High School who have maintained a high standard of excellence and made a significant contribution in their fields of endeavor. The 2019 inductees were Patricia McGovern Sweeney, Class of 1974, and John Darnell, Class of 1966. The inductees were presented with the award at the Senior Honors Assembly on May 22 in front of all BHS students, faculty and senior parents. A copy of their award plaque will be placed on the Alumni wall outside of the BHS office. Fundraiser for wheelchair racer

Micah Beckwith, a junior at Boardman High School, has made two trips to Track and Field State Competition in Columbus. He competes in the seated division in four events, and has earned All Ohioan status five times in the last two years. Beckwith has a wheeler (racer chair) that he uses for the 100, 400 and 800. That chair is rented for the season and returned in August. Now, a group of supporters spearheaded by outgoing Athletic Director Denise Gorski, is raising funds to buy Beckwith his own personal racer chair for better training opportunities. Carmella’s Cafe is hosting the event on July 14 from 12-4 p.m. The cafe is normally closed on Sundays but wanted to help Beckwith and his family raise the needed funds. Tickets are $25 per person and that includes a very nice assortment of food, a DJ, Chinese Auction and celebrity bartenders. Boardman High School graduating seniors ate food provided by the school at the annual Field Day on May 22.
Boa rd m a n H ig h S c ho ol graduating seniors celebrated the end of the school year with Field Day on May 22. Principal Cynthia Fernback said that this is the second year the school has hosted the event. “We used to have an end of the year swim party, but attendance started to drop off, so we wanted to mix it up,” she said. Students spent the morning at an Honors Scholarship As-
sembly and then graduation practice, before making their way over to Spartan Stadium. Fernback said that students were not required to attend the event, but said that about 80 percent of the class was in attendance. Throughout the stadium different games were set up, including corn hole, soccer, football and others. Members of the Boardman High School band also played music during the event. Fernback said that the school provided food for the students
as well. Options of corn dogs, fried cheese and other fair foods were available to students right outside of the stadium. A dunk tank was also present at the event, which Boardman teachers and staff members took turns in. “This class is special,” Fernback said. “The kids are great, and this is just a way for them to go and have fun because they deserve it.” The seniors last day of school is May 29, with the rest of the school out on June 4.

INaturalist allows scientists to identify the wildlife, which Turillo said is a great way for students to learn about the nature that surrounds them. “This is what we like to call citizen science,” Boyle said. “It’s a way for everyone to get involved in the scientific research of their local areas.” Boyle organized fifth-grade students into groups, which w a l ke d t h roug h t he a rea around the Lily Pond photographing the wildlife. He explained to students how to take photos of bugs and plants without disturbing the wildlife. “The number one thing out
here is observing,” Boyle said. “It’s just basic observational skills.” Boyle had met with Boardman students the week before, teaching them how to use IPads to take the photos, and upload them to the program. Turillo said that she was excited when Boyle reached out to the school. “This was the learning opportunity we have been waiting for,” Turillo said. She said that her desire was to encourage students to find a love for science. “I think it’s important, especially for girls. This field is full of opportunities for everyone and it has such a wide range of possibilities,” Turillo said.
