WINDOWS 10 Microsoft’s future may depend on it being successful. Some of you may have noticed the notification on your taskbar about the forthcoming release of Windows 10; this feature is simply notifying users that you are eligible for a free upgrade.

The upgrade is available for 1 year, for Windows 7 and 8.1 users only, free of charge. Microsoft seems to be fully aware of the indifferent attitude towards Windows 8; new users accepted it, because they didn’t know any different. Power users hated it, and the long-time Windows users didn’t like to be forced to use the touchscreen side of the system. Windows 8 was in hind-sight a leap too far, a bit like 3D TV’s.

Microsoft has stated that future development on 10 will be focused on usability, operating speed and combating virus and malware infections. It seems that Microsoft have listened to the masses! I have been using the Windows 10 Technical preview for some time now, and there is much to like, it is clearly faster in use, and it is capable of being used on older hardware too. The Start button and menu is back, which is now a combination between Win 7 and 8. When it is released to the public, it will require a large download from the internet, and the upgrade is actually a full install, so please make sure you have a backup of everything you don’t want to lose. Windows 10 updates will no longer just be security updates; they will also include core improvements and install new features, something that has been missing for years. So it seems Windows 10 is here to stay for some time yet.

Taking place on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July, this food festival with a twist, will take place outdoors with the giant Hercules aircraft acting as a backdrop for the bustling food market. Following on from the success of the first two festivals which have seen over 15,000 people attend, over 70 local producers from across Shropshire, Staffordshire and the West Midlands will be tempting visitors with a wide range of exquisite local, fresh and handmade produce not available from your average supermarket store. Visitors will learn from top chefs during cooking demonstrations courtesy of the Wot’s Cooking team. TOM COURT – 2PM Tom is an Award winning Former Head Chef, with 2 AA Rosettes to his name. He now runs his own catering company 'Sticky Fig Catering' based in the West Midlands. Trained by Swiss chefs, with a French influence, Tom also worked with an Italian chef for five years so his style is truly European but he loves his traditional British flavours. JULIA WENLOCK – 3PM Award winning chocolatier Julia Wenlock will be bringing a touch of sweetness to proceedings and talking all things chocolate. PART TWO
Trelissick Creamy Yellow
Salvia ‘Icing Sugar’ LAST MONTH I wrote about the hardiest ornamental sages that come from Europe. This month it’s the turn of their more exotic looking cousins from Central and South America. Many of these are also hardy in our winters but you need to take some care in selecting varieties as there are also lots of tender ones that need to be taken indoors in winter. The hardy types have become a mainstay of my garden because they bloom for so long and attract lots of bees. Among the toughest is Salvia macrophylla which forms a woody, upright shrub about 2ft (60cm) tall and has wrinkly leaves and brightly coloured flowers from June through to October. The best of these is “Pink Blush” with masses of vivid pink flowers that just won’t be ignored!

Very Popular ‘Hot Lips’
Salvia microphylla is equally as tough and is known as Blackcurrant Sage – just rub a leaf and smell to discover why. These grow to a more domed, eventually sprawling shrub about 2ft (60cm) tall. There are lots of lovely colours available. “Hot Lips” is very popular at the moment; these has red-lipped, white flowers in summer. In cooler weather the flowers may be all white or even all red. One of my favourites is “Trelissick Creamy Yellow” with her pale yellow flowers that have a hint of warm pink at their necks. Salvia “Icing Sugar” is even smaller at 1ft (30cm) tall and is clothed with delightful two-tone pink flowers throughout the summer. New to the garden is “Wendy’s Wish”. The large, tubular pink flowers and arching stems make it ideal for a sheltered spot at the front of the border.

Anise Sage ‘Black and Blue’
All of these types need some sun and will survive the winter in a well-drained soil. If you have a wet soil in winter then they make ideal plants for patio pots, but remember to keep the pots somewhere out of heavy frost in winter. All are best pruned back in spring to a nice shape to stop them getting too leggy. Anise Sage (Salvia guaranitica) grows from a tuber in much the same way as a Dahlia and it can be treated like a Dahlia: if you leave your Dahlia tubers in the ground over winter you can do the same with these tuberous Sages, otherwise dig them up in early winter and pot them up and keep them in a porch or cold greenhouse until early spring when you can start watering them again. If you leave them in the ground don’t be surprised if you don’t see any growth until late April or early May. The hardiest varieties are “Blue Enigma” and “Black and Blue”. For something really different and impressive why not give Bolivian Sage (Salvia atrocyanea) a try? But remember to give it ample space as it will grow to about 6-7 feet (2 metres) tall and its long, arching stems will be clothed in dramatic blue flowers from August onwards. It is completely herbaceous – that is it dies down every winter and comes back up again from underground each spring. It is completely hardy in well-drained soil.
Different and impressive ‘Bolivian Sage’ I’ve only scratched the surface of the wonderful world of ornamental sages there are literally thousands of species and varieties out there waiting for a home in your garden.

Permanent identification of dogs through microchipping has many benefits. It can help reunite strays with their owners, help tackle puppy farming, and encourage responsible ownership. In pedigree dogs it facilitates the reporting of hereditary health problems. Dog owners will need to: - Have their dog microchipped and registered on one of the authorised commercial databases - Register the details of any new owner before they sell or give the dog away - Keep their contact details up-to-date on the databases If the authorities come across a dog after 6 April 2016 that does not have a microchip the owner will be required to have it chipped urgently.
