Mud pies and other treasures

M

y sister and I grew up as country girls. We had no need for makeup and fingernail polish. We had mud. Forming wet earth into the shape of a mud pie and other amazing things was a theme in our early childhood. The creations were dried in the sun and kept as treasures. Our world was endlessly large and full of promise. Each new morning was the beginning of an exciting new day, new experiences, new dreams, and of course, new mud creations. We learned, however, how temporary our treasures were. As soon as the rain came, they were gone. But the vision was not. And, we would roll up our sleeves and build whatever it was from the ground again. I think back on this with a smile. It delightfully reminds me how children have a sense of wonder so indestructible that it is meant to last a lifetime. A clear-eyed vision of

simplicity and tenacity. Children live life as if something magnificent is about to happen. Later in life, we imagine what is already but not yet. Our future resides in our thoughts and our hopes and our plans. So, we continue to build to create the life we envision. Only now we know the importance of relying on a rock-solid foundation. Firmly formed with trust, commitment, accountability, and unconditional love. All to protect our treasures. Still, rains will fall; storms will come; rocks will be thrown. Life is hard. Challenges are part of it. We all experience failures. Grit, faith, and determination are necessary, and lessons learned from the mud become clear. (He who slings it generally loses ground.) So, we never stop dreaming. The world is still endlessly large and full of promise. Each new morning is still always a new beginning. The clear-eyed vision to build something magnificent is still in our hearts. Even if it is (ever) necessary to roll up our sleeves and build from the ground again.

A visit with Jim and Sharon Van Woert by Ben Getz

35

years is a long run for any enterprise; a marriage, a career, and especially for a small business. The statistics were not quite as daunting four-decades ago, but they remain fairly consistent that only two out of ten new businesses survive their first year. With that being said, June 1st, 2019 marked the Thirty-Fifth anniversary of Jim and Sharon Van Woert at the helm of the Olde World Trading Company…and in two locations since 1984. Quite an accomplishment in any book! In a recent interview with Venue Magazine, the effervescent Sharon Van Woert recalled with fondness their humble beginnings in the downtown Ephrata location. Jim and Sharon transplanted from Oregon and came to the Columbia Basin for Jim’s work with the Soil Conservation Service. Real ‘salt of the earth’ people by nature, the Van Woerts’ settled in and started raising their three children in our community, though Jim had smoldering within him a longstanding desire and dream of owning a retail business. By chance or design Jim and Sharon had become friends through their love of coin collecting with the owner of an established business, Western Collectors, and an opportunity to buy the business from him became too much to resist. Thus, the Van Woerts’ established their first ‘Olde World’ location setting their business model as eclectic gift shops specializing in unique gifts, jewelry, weapons, and coins; the stores truly must be seen to be appreciated! Often still mistakenly called a “pawn” shop, this is not the case, though they do a trade/loan business with firearms, coins, and jewelry, as well as appraisals of all the above.

Starting your own business isn’t just a job

IT’S A WAY OF LIFE

Eric Van Woert, Jim and Sharon Van Woert, Brennan Bean, Aaron Van Woert

In 1993 the Ephrata location was moved across the street to a much better building space to accommodate their growing business, and over the last 25 years as both Olde World shops have flourished Jim and Sharon have become increasingly more adept and well trained in their trade and craft, and they truly enjoy attending dealer and trade shows. Sharon was so fascinated with the gems, precious stones and jewelry aspect of the business she obtained her Gemologist degree to make certain they could provide skilled service as well as protect their interests.

In any business that buys and sells firearms, a close working relationship with local authorities as well as the B.A.T.F. is crucial. Sharon relates they have had almost zero issues over the decades due to their honesty and commitment to do everything by the rules and establishing a trustworthy relationship with law enforcement. Being based in a small-town region like ours has helped them to get to know many locals, and to see their children grow up and take on roles in the business. Sons Eric and Aaron are mainstays at the Moses Lake counter and both are extremely knowledgeable and helpful in all

aspects of the business. The boys have partnered with their parents since the beginning and were joined by Brennan who was added to the staff 13 years ago while still in high school. He has ‘grown up’ in the business and is another valuable asset on the Olde World team. It is refreshing to note that the Van Woerts’ legacy includes a strong Christian faith that has helped them make friends, serve customers, and has allowed them to change lives as they are ever willing to comfort, pray, or just visit with people they encounter to help them have a better day. Very active in their local church, they have volunteered and served in Nicaragua as well as both of their sons are in training for the ministry. While running the businesses, supporting their church, and enjoying a growing family leaves

not much in the way of ‘spare’ time, Jim likes to ‘dip a line’ in the water and hopes to be doing more of that. Sharon in her down time enjoys the art of scrapbooking, and together they love gathering and sharing memories in artistic displays. Now at an interesting crossroad in their lives, looking forward and back, Sharon beams as she recalls all the blessings they have had in the all too quick passing of 35 years in the retail business in our tightknit communities. The course forward for Jim and Sharon points to changing freedoms and new opportunities to travel and serve as they move through the next few years. The rest of us will be anxious to see what God and the future has in store for the Van Woerts.

At the Grant County Fair

Pieced Together: Mural Project by Shawn Cardwell

I

t’s the ideal story of what happens when community leaders get together – they make change, and they involve their community. It happened in 2016 with Freya Liggett, Ciara Shuttleworth and Spencer Biallas, who were at the time, respectfully, Moses Lake Museum Manager, Columbia Basin Allied Arts Executive Director and Grant County Fair Event Coordinator*. They wanted to make something that lasted and celebrate the history of the region. So, the Pieced Together: Mural Project was created. The first year, in 2016 at the Grant County Fair, ARTGarden Pottery owner Laura Mayer, now-Moses Lake Museum Artistic Director Erika Kovalenko and nowColumbia Basin Allied Arts Executive Director Shawn Cardwell (also author of this article!) painted murals ranging from 8’x8’ to 8’24’, and fairgoers painted the boarders with whacky colors and patterns. For their efforts,

the team was awarded the coveted Commissioners Award for their participation at the Fair. Kovalenko and I painted smaller murals the second year, and last year the community did ALL the painting on a 8’x16’ “1909” for the year Grant County was founded. Themes of murals have included farms, our unique geography and life-giving irrigation, flora, fauna, historic buildings and the County Fair itself. I talked with Kovalenko about the project, she said, “It is very exciting as an artist to do such a big project and also to get involved with the community, and all three organizations. You get this beautiful chance to meet with kids, and see it go up for years. I feel very fortunate to be a part of it.” This year, the final phase of the 5-year project will begin. Kovalenko has been selected to design the final mural, which will be drawn on two 4’x8’ panels, and painted

thevenuemag.com | 23

by the public at the Grant County Fair. “With this next year, the culmination… is evident what can happen when organizations come together with the community with one goal in mind,” she said. The community-made mural will then be used as inspiration for the final project, which Kovalenko will paint on the water cistern located across from the fairgrounds parking lot. The mural will depict significant ecological and cultural moments in the history of our region, and especially Moses Lake. Celebration of the project will take place around Earth Day 2020. Something hard to describe makes the Mural Project special, as Kovalenko said, “…for people to view large scale works of art: it changes you in a positive way… and there is something magical that happens when you have a physical addition to the project.” Funding for this project is being sought by Columbia Basin Allied. Past sponsors include Moses Lake Steel, Dano

Law Firm, Moses Lake Les Schwab Tires, A&H Printers and Lake Bowl. Opportunities for individuals to have their name painted on the cistern for a small contribution is also available. If you or your business would like to be a sponsor and included in the final mural design, please contact Shawn Cardwell at cbaa@bigbend.edu, or call 509-793-2059.

*All who have since left their positions. Liggett is now Curator of History at the Northwest Museum of Art and Culture, Shuttleworth is the Art and ELA Teacher for Soap Lake High School, and Biallas is working at his family’s business A&H Printers.

2019 Moses Lake Roundup Rodeo Man of the Year

Mike Cobb by Janene Cobb

B

orn in Spokane, the oldest of nine children Mike moved to the Columbia Basin area when he was just 12 years old. His first memory of the August move was a trip to the Moses Lake Roundup Rodeo and Grant County Fair, he recalls sitting in the “brand new” concrete grandstands and watching cowboys and cowgirls compete. Following that experience, he attended the fair many more times showing 4-H/ FFA swine. Mike can’t remember a year that he hasn’t come to the best fair and rodeo in Central Washington. This and many other experiences led him to participate in many regional rodeos as a bareback riding contestant, however along the way he would eventually hang up his spurs as he married his best friend and high school sweetheart Janene in 1972. Since those days he has dedicated himself to work and family, with 4 children whom he supported in many activities, including sports,

musical talent, 4-H/FFA and many rodeos of their own. These 4 children have turned into 18 grandchildren and even great-grandchildren. Mike has worked to build a solid foundation on which to provide for a family and ensure future success. He started farming with family in 1984 when times were really tough in the agriculture world. He used to say that “many farms were either for sale or for rent” however without any cash funds in hand they turned to work day and night on a custom hay business and saved every penny until they got the chance to rent farmland. Ever since then he and his family have worked tirelessly to build opportunity in agriculture and to meet the goals of eventually

the single source solution! owning their own land and cattle. These dreams have since come true and the family farm is built on a solid foundation. In all of this Mike has always said “I farm so I can have my cows” as he and his family have steadily built a productive beef cattle operation based in quality genetics to ensure the product from “farm to fork”. Giving back to the community and others has always been an important part of Mike’s life and has transcended to the legacy among his children and family. Kindness is the common theme in his demeanor and a standard of conduct that he has passed down to those who know him best. Mike is a good-hearted and generous man who over the years has served as a volunteer firefighter, rode for the Grant County Sheriffs Posse, has spent many years on the producer advisory board for Northwest Farm Credit Services, and for the past 15 years with the Moses Lake Roundup serving as VP and President for several of those years. Mike, on behalf of your family as our husband, dad, brother, uncle, and grandpa we want to say that our lives are shaped by your goodness, also, that we have known true love and happiness because of your kind example. There are many things you have taught us “to be” in this world simply by your actions that will forever help us reach our ultimate potential. In short to us you have been the “man of the year” every year we have known you. We love you and tip our hats and hearts to the opportunity to share in this public honor at this time mainly because you would be the last one to expect the honor to ever come your way. Lastly, Mike wishes to thank all those who have supported him with this great award and to tell the cowboys and cowgirls competing to ride straight,, bear down and let er’ buck in the best show on Columbia Basin Dirt!

ason Dent grew up in Humeston, Iowa as a farm kid. He won the junior division steer riding at Leon, Iowa when he was ten. Then he was off to college for a B.S. in Agribusiness, and all the college rodeos he could get to. He won another buckle in college and one as a professional bull rider. After managing an equine barn in Bell Buckle, Tennessee for a stint, he went back to Iowa where he managed a feed mill and picked the bull riding up where he left off. He won Rookie of the Year in 2002, while also working, raising and training quarter horses. He continued that pattern until 2010 when he decided to become self-employed. He moved back to his hometown with his wife, and started training his bucking bull that wouldn’t buck (Ole). Ole is registered with the ABBI and carries double-bred Wrangler Rivets bloodlines. As an own son of Little Yellow Jacket (4 time PBR bull of the year), it is simply astonishing how far they have come. Ole weighs 1850 lbs, and is one of a kind! Jason is a PRCA rodeo clown, and loves entertaining people, telling stories, and sharing Ole with you all! You may recognize him from your television set…..He spent 110 days on a show called Big Brother in 2017! .

indy Nealey-Lica is 28 years old, from Bloomington, IL. She began trick riding at the age of 10, and has been performing rodeos, Wild West shows, and dinner theaters over half of her life. She is an accomplished trick rider and roman rider, and rides two flashy buckskin quarter horses. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois with a degree in Environmental Science. Soon after graduation she was asked to perform stunt work on the film Cowgirls and Angels 2: Dakota’s Summer, a family film with a focus on the trick riding lifestyle. She was a featured trick rider at Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede Dinner Theater in Pigeon Forge, TN, where she performed over 800 shows a year. Lindy began using her talents competitively in 2014, where her roman riding act was named the IPRA Contract Act Showcase Champion. In 2016, Lindy was named the Texas North American Trick Riding Qualifier Champion, which took her to Las Vegas for the North American Championships. Lindy’s finesse and graceful style will make her death defying tricks look effortless atop her hard running horses. Haley Ganzel is 24 years old, from Collinsville, OK. She began trick riding at the age of 4 after begging her uncle, NFR Contract Act Shawn Brackett, to teach her the trade. A passion for trick riding and the performing lifestyle developed at a young age for Haley when she had the opportunity to travel with the Great American Wild West Show to some of the greatest rodeo venues in the country. She was blessed with the opportunity to work with legendary trick riders at a young age, where she was able to learn and hone her craft. Haley was crowned the 2007 World Champion Trick Rider, competed in the 2016 North American Trick Riding Championships in Las Vegas, and played a role and performed stunt work in the films Cowgirls and Angels, and Cowgirls and Angels 2: Dakota’s Summer. Haley not only trick rides, but also roman rides and works her dancing horse “Crazy Cloud”, where she is proud to display her Cherokee heritage. Haley is always expanding her talents, and constantly keeps the crowd at the edge of their seats. She would like to thank the Cherokee Nation and Cherokee Businesses for their sponsorship and continual support.

T

hursday night’s rodeo is dedicated to “Tough Enough to Wear Pink”, a program about increasing awareness of breast cancer. Most PRCA rodeos including the National Finals in Las Vegas dedicate one night to this cause. We’re not Just “cowboys in pink shirts”. The Columbia Basin Rodeo Association committee is taking this program a step further to include a presentation to honor lost loved ones and celebrate those who have won their battle, and to raise money for the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation. The release of 200 pink balloons is a tradition and a powerful memorial that brings out emotion

in even the toughest cowboys. We have chosen to support the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation in our community to help local cancer patients with financial burdens, counseling, support groups, medical advice and many other services. The Moses Lake Round-up rodeo will continue to support Thursday night’s “Tough Enough to were Pink”. We had a record attendance for 2018, so thank you to the Columbia Basin community for coming to our rodeo and supporting this important cause. You can learn more about the history of “Tough Enough to were Pink”, at: http// toughenoughtowearpink.com. See ya next year!

In 1981, a local farmer, Dennis Higashiyama, was working on his tractor and listening to America’s favorite radio host, Paul Harvey, have a conversation about the necessity of farming and farmers. The woman in this conversation expressed her opinion by saying, “I don’t understand why we need farmers, don’t they know we can just go to the grocery store and buy what we need?” Local farmers were outraged. In our region we live in a world of agriculture and are familiar with the faces of the hardworking families who bring food to our table (and our stores), however, this conversation illustrated clearly how farmers and consumers had drifted apart – leaving many people with little or no understanding about how food actually arrives on their grocery shelves. Because of this, on the second weekend in September, every year, the Quincy Valley community prepares a unique celebration called Quincy Farmer-Consumer Awareness Days (FCAD), which educates the consumer on the farm to market process. For farmers, FCAD is an opportunity to show the fruits of their labor and demonstrate the tools and techniques used in their work. For the public, the event has tours of area processing plants and farms, displays of farm equipment, informational and commodity booths, and a farmers market. The event profiles our local farm families, our abundant farmlands and the businesses that are determined to stay on the cutting edge to provide the very best food possible. So, the next time you say, “Pass the potatoes, please,” remember the dedicated farmers at the heart of our rural communities. We at VENUE Magazine encourage you to bring your whole family to the Quincy Farmer Consumer Awareness Day(s) Celebration and get acquainted with our local people who bring us fresh foods from the earth. To them, we say thank you!
