elcome to the 2010 Best of Nevada County publication. The Union is honored to present this unique opportunity to recognize the people, businesses and places in our community that make it a wonderful place to live, work and play! Our Best of Nevada County 2010 ballot was included several editions asking you — our loyal readers — to vote for your favorites. To ensure the integrity of the voting process, ballots were sealed, sent to a contracted company and tabulated offsite. Duplicates, reproductions and other ballots not meeting the strict published criteria were excluded. This year, as in the past, the response from the community was outstanding; demonstrating how important each of these businesses that are honored throughout the publication are to Nevada County. As our county has flourished, so has community interest and the title of “The Best” has become increasingly competitive. Although we do have some repeat winners, we would like to welcome those who have risen to the top for the first time! Each recipient contributes to the charm of our community. We would like to thank our readers and advertisers for making this edition possible and for being paramount to its success. And the winners are ...

Citizen of the

Citizen of the

Year nominees

We are proud to introduce a new addition to our Best of Nevada County publication this year, honoring nominees for Citizen of The Year. These great people really are the foundation of our great community. They are part of the fabric that has created the quality of life most of us appreciate about Nevada County. They are the quiet volunteers, or heads of non-profit organizations that provide us with the social and emotional needs many of our friends and neighbors require. And the nominees are …

Year nominee

Homer Nottingham

I recommend Homer Nottingham, my father, for Citizen of the Year, for his lifetime contributions to his community here and everywhere he has lived. Having been a Little League Coach, member of Lion’s Club, Rotary Club, Toastmasters, and now Gold Country Kiwanis, he has spent many years bettering his community. Through Kiwanis he has volunteered time at Treat Street, chili cookoffs, child safety fairs, downtown Halloween candy and book fairs, and Beach Party Auction. Kiwanis projects help buy back-to-school supplies and clothes for disadvantaged kids in the community, help Boy Scouts, and fund other children’s needs in our community. Along with his wife Jan, he helped bring the Kiwanis Doll Auction of dolls created by local artists and celebrities, such as Sheryl Crow. Homer led the Kiwanis spin-a-thon last month where local doctors and community members showed up to So.Yuba Club to raise funds for Kiwanis Family House in Sacramento, where families of ill children can stay close to their child at no charge. My Dad and Jan helped purchase instruments through The Center for the Arts to start a youth band, “The 13.” At age 73, a Spin and Qi Gong Instructor for Monster Gym, he loves listening to his students, inviting all to World Peace Day and potlucks in his garden. I’m sure people will agree. — Submitted by Jan Nottingham

Dr. Frank Lang

I nominate Dr. Frank Lang for Citizen of the Year. He is a most remarkable, understated, and giving man. Over the past 6 years, he has served the homeless of Nevada County at Hospitality House by providing medical exams and care on Mondays, AFTER his full day as the head of Miners Clinic. He used to call himself, Doc-in-a-box, but now he has a team of medical professionals, including Chris Newsom, and several physician’s assistants and nurses, who also help out. He has personally saved many lives at Hospitality House because of his service and his expert diagnostic skills. Dr. Lang is very low keyed and humble, so I think people often miss his tremendous contribution to this community. — Submitted by Mary O’Brien

Leo Granucci

Leo Granucci of Nevada City exemplifies community service. He has served on numerous nonprofit boards: The Friendship Club, Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, Hospice of the Foothills and the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley. He is a loyal and true ambassador of all the groups he is involved with. A cancer survivor, Leo was one of three local honorary spokespeople for Amgen’s nonprofit Breakaway from Cancer initiative, which raises awareness of resources available to cancer patients and their families. He got to shoot the gun starting the Tour of California. I have known Leo, and his wife Gayle, for a number of years. We served together on The Friendship Club board, where we worked closely together on a strategic plan. Leo always has an eye to the future and how to make it better. Something I find exceptional about Leo is how he does so many wonderful things to benefit the entire community, but is low key and humble about it. He was quoted in The Union’s coverage of the Amgen Tour, “I was granted the vision to see each today as a precious gift to be used wisely and richly.” He does. And our community is better for it. — Submitted by Susie Baro

Most importantly I’d like to thank Nevada County community for voting me 2010 Best of Nevada County. I’ve been DJing and emceeing now for over 24 years and it’s because of you it just keeps getting better. Being chosen “Best of” for the last four consecutive years truly means I’m reaching my goals … and that is to please you. As most of you know I’ve been working for Safeway for 14 years and Express Mart for 21 years. This has entrusted me the privilege to be deeply involved in

the community. Because of this I know many of you and your families very well. I’ve watched some of you grow and now raise children of your own. This lends me the ability to, in my unique fashion, read you the audience … I listen to your requests and desires … I make it all about you. This is how I’m sure I’ve been voted “Best of.” Again, thank you for this privilege. I value what this community has given me … Faith, Hope and Love… I give this back to you. Faith this community will always stand strong as a community. Hope we will together always be prosperous. And love … the greatest of these is love. I give my love back in my music. Music allows me to have a stronger communal bond. There’s prosperity in the benefits we’ve put together as a community. Without your love I wouldn’t be Bobby “G”. I am very grateful to you, Nevada County! “What you think about and thank about is what you bring about.” I continue to think of opportunities to benefit you the community. I continue to thank my family, friends and Nevada County. We together will bring abundance. Again, thank you Nevada County for your generous support. — By Bobby “G”

Thank

You

Two years in a row! Wow!! Again, many thanks need to go out.

GOD

Always first, Almighty , Who made the fruits, the vegetables, and the trees. All come from His loving hands. The produce stand wouldn’t be what it is without the wonderful support of Brad & Judy Johnson who let me farm with them - a big THANK YOU to you two. Harold & your family, THANK YOU for the fantastic Noble Fir trees. They are the best. Last but very important, those who shopped at Farmer Bob’s produce stand and Christmas tree lot and voted them the BEST OF NEVADA COUNTY. I hope to continue providing the quality you want.

Halli Ellis

Whether it’s picking up trash she sees on the ground, recycling cans and bottles she finds, inspiring youth to make healthy choices, organizing a soccer game for peace, lending a hand to a friend in need, or leading a bunch of hippie dancers in the park; each day Halli Ellis makes this world, this county, a more beautiful place. It would be nearly impossible for me to explain all that Halli has done for Nevada County in her 22 years on this earth, let alone in this past year. Halli is well-known and respected throughout the community. She is known and loved for her free spirit and her ability to see the beauty in everything around her. Halli has given the youth of Nevada County a choice, a chance, a voice, and a future. As site supervisor at the Lyman Gilmore After School Program, Halli provides a safe place for students where they are able to just be themselves. At the After School Program, Halli allows the students to plan events, express ideas, create change, and have fun, all while learning necessary life skills as well as ways to live a healthy lifestyle physically and emotionally. When Halli gets an idea, she makes that idea into a reality. When she wants change, she’ll make it happen. Every little task that Halli commits to, she commits fully. Never have I seen someone put so much time, passion, energy, love, and hard work into everything that they do. Halli is a huge part of the county organization known as NEO. The success of this organization has a lot to do with Halli’s participation amongst the group. Halli has encouraged sustainability, diversity, equality, and peace in our county. She has been an inspiration to the youth of the community. Halli has a voice; a unique voice, a voice that needs to be heard, a voice that has been heard, a voice that is well-respected. Not only does she stand up for what she believes in, but she supports others in their attempt to do so as well. Halli is more than just a citizen of this county, she is a daughter, a sister, a friend, a role model, a leader. Halli continues to make an impact on our county every day, and she will continue for years and years to come. I can’t even begin to explain how proud I am of her and how lucky I feel to call her my sister. No one is more deserving of the title of “citizen of the year” than Halli Ellis. Thank you for your time. And I challenge you to go to TheUnion.com and type in her name and see for yourself. Or attend any local event and I’m sure you’ll see her there with her crazy curly hair and her lively personality. — Submitted by Ariel Ellis

Citizen of the

Year nominee

Tom Cunningham

I am voting for Tom Cunningham as The Union’s 2010 Citizen of the Year. As a resident since 1999, Tom is a very recognized and recognizable personality within the community. Tom’s great loves are music and theater. Within Nevada County, Tom contributes to the well being of many arts organizations. Because he loves music, he attends all the arts functions that he can cram into he already busy schedule. I believe that Tom Cunningham should be The Union’s Person of the Year, not solely because of his significant financial contributions to the arts community in Nevada County. As a community, Nevada County includes a disparate variety of people, not just politically well known figures. Tom Cunningham through his love of the arts, contributes his time, energy, effort, love and friendship to

Joseph Salas

Citizen of the

Year nominee

My favorite choice for the title of Citizen of the Year is Joseph Salas of Grass Valley. Joseph created the Lunch at the Crossroads four years ago when he saw the need to feed the poor in this community. His roots started more than 11 years ago as a hotel and restaurant manager in Sunnyvale, Calif. He can see how this plan was ordained over time allowing him the building blocks for his dream. Relaying his ideas to a friend who worked for the Interfaith Food Ministry, he was encouraged to serve even more. Convinced his idea would work he knocked on the door of the Methodist Church in Grass Valley, starting The Last Friday Supper and the Second Friday Supper. Joseph’s dream finally came true to feed the poor in this community. Wanting a day meal, he started the Lunch at the Crossroads four years ago. Over 10,000 meals have been served free of charge. — Submitted by Pat Rutter

Citizen of the

Delbert and Marion Mack

Grandparents of five and great-grandparents of three would not normally be people that you would ask to raise a newborn child even if it were for a close family member. One would certainly not even suggest to a great-grandmother or greatgrandfather to nurture newborn babies for women incarcerated in prison, but that is exactly what Delbert and Marion Mack have done, not one time, but nine times! One might surmise that because they are a retired couple they have the time to do this exceptionally unusual blessing for a child. But again, no Marion fills her ‘spare’ time as a seamstress and she volunteers much time to church activities. Del has a part-time schedule working as the Maintenance Supervisor for Sierra View Manor an Assisted Living care home for seniors and in his ‘spare’ time for the last 22 years he has been an acclaimed Volunteer Police Officer for the City of Grass Valley. Devoted believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, the Mack’s were led by their faith and their hearts to take on the nurturing of newly born infants and have loved and cared for some of them as long as 6 months of age until the mother’s are released from prison and adjust with their baby into a halfway house program. You would think their caring would end there. Again, no. The Mack’s continue their relationship with the children and their mothers. Sometimes they drive 10-hours one way to visit and support them.

R.C. (Richard) Holub

Our beautiful county lost a great citizen Aug. 14, 2010, R.C. (Richard) Holub at the age of 91. He was raised here from very humble beginnings in what was Patrick’s Court (N. Church St.); worked the Idaho-Maryland, Old and New Brunswick, and Golden Center Gold Mines; also, he worked nights at our California Highway Patrol on E. Main St. In 1940, he married Lena Macari after meeting her in Grass Valley at Tess’ Soda Salon on Mill Street. In 1942, Richard joined the Army Air Corps. While in World War II, he earned a Legion of Merit award for the first-ever rocket-assisted takeoff of a heavy bomber (B-17G). Together, Richard and Len raised two girls, Kim and Jill. After 30 years in the Air Force, R.C. Holub retired as full Colonel in 1972 to Grass Valley. During his retirement, he served 12 years in the Forest Service as well in the Banner Lookout Tower guarding our county from fires. He passed on his love of this community to his family that survives him (which numbers around 30 local, direct

Citizen of the

Year nominee

Sandy Schmidt

I’d like to nominate Sandy Schmidt, founder of Women of Worth. There is a dark shadow over Nevada County, of which most of us are totally unaware … the increasing levels of domestic violence, EVEN sex trades right here in our own community. Sandy was once a victim of domestic violence, now in a loving family with her husband and young son, she did not forget her experiences. She created a service to help other women escape and start new lives as she did. Sandy’s program embraces the client with love, compassion and respect. She engages them in the process of change, empowers women to make decisions for their own well being. When you meet Sandy, you FEEL good! Her dynamic and upbeat nature belies the pain she has had, and interfaces with daily. She is an amazing woman deeply committed to God from which her service flows with passion and purpose. As a mother AND grandmother, Sandy’s maternal instincts have had a broader impact. Her vision for a safe house has just been realized with the opening of Hetti’s Haven, named after Hetti Williams who was murdered by her husband in 2005. — Submitted by Marilyn Nyborg

Wait, she’s retired? Many retirees in Nevada County spend their time in philanthropy rather than in leisure, but one in particular seems to work as much in retirement as she did in her former career. Sandy Blake taught at Union Hill School for more than 30 years. When she retired two years ago, her coworkers reminded her to relax and to do things she loves. Her definition may differ from theirs. Ms. Blake seems to volunteer as many hours as she spent teaching second grade. Before school started, she helped with paperwork and copying for office staff and other teachers. Throughout the year, she has helped with testing and reading in the primary grades. She constantly volunteers her time and talents to help staff members with their activities. Outside of normal classroom activities, she is an avid supporter of the school’s collections for the Food Bank of Nevada County. She helped count and box food for the KCRA 3 Kids Can! Food Drive and organized the recent Donation

We enthusiastically endorse Gayle Lossman as Nevada County’s Citizen of the Year for her inspired contribution to seniors in this community. For several years Gayle has guided us at the exercise and yoga classes at the South Yuba Club (54 members) and at Eskaton Village (25 members). We seniors range from 55 to 104 years young. Several of us have attended her classes for the entire ten years as she provided us with an example of how to live life to the fullest. She goes far beyond teaching us how to exercise. We have fun, laugh, tease, dance and have a new caring circle of friends. All of this happens while we are getting stronger and healthier. Gayle’s spirit is infectious. She enriches the lives of each one of us.

Profile: Best bank

Citizens Bank of Northern California

Offices in Nevada City, Grass Valley, Penn Valley, Lake of the Pines, Truckee and Auburn www.citizensbanknc.com (530) 470-2804

Thank You! for voting Citizens Bank of Northern California “Best Bank” for 12 consecutive years. We take this honor seriously, pledging each day to make sure our customers, and our community, feel they have received the very “Best of Citizens Bank” – our hallmark service. Citizens Bank was founded in 1995 with a very ambitious goal

to make a real difference in our community – both in the business of banking and in being good stewards of the towns where we live and work. We’re very proud of the impact we’ve made in helping local businesses and families reach many of their dreams. We think being the BEST at anything is all about amazing people. While our Bank opened with just 12 employees, today our employee “family” measures 87 – each with an expertise that, when combined, is second to none. We’re certain that expertise differentiates us and makes the “customer experience” at our Bank that much better. So, whether our customer is looking for their very first checking account or running one of our County’s largest businesses, we’ve got the BEST team to help. And speaking of “help”, at last count, the majority of our Bank’s 87 employees volunteer in at least 96 local organizations - and are trustees or board members of at least 33 of those great organizations. Our customers have grown to enjoy our simple, but state-ofthe-art products and services that help them manage the daily money needs of their households and businesses. So, whether it’s an “old fashioned” checking account, Mobile Banking via cell phone, Online Banking or our menu of lending products, there is something in our product line-up for everyone. Citizens Bank has six offices throughout Nevada County and one in neighboring Placer County – in Auburn.

Profile: Best Health Club

South Yuba Club 555 Searls Ave, Nevada City (530) 470-9100 www.southyubaclub.com

How important is exercise to you? The Answer is … “VERY” We hear this all the time, but most of us don’t exercise enough. The facts stare us in the face each day: a national obesity crisis, skyrocketing diabetes, hypertension, slow painful dying, et cetera. This situation is creating countless personal tragedies and a financial crisis within national health care system. Yet still you are probably not exercising, right? How important is it? Ask some local leaders who know. Katherine Medeiros, president and CEO of the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital, says “Getting regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for yourself … it promotes health and well-being.” She follows her own advice by working out at 5:30 a.m. Could it be that she knows something that you don’t quite yet believe?

40 2010 Best of Nevada County

Listen to some other experts who deal with patients who have not taken care of themselves. Gabriel Soto, M.D. says “don’t have to go out and set unrealistic [exercise] goals but rather … ease back into an exercise program… for cardiovascular exercise start with short distances and low speeds.” Doctor Jon Pritchett, another expert at SNMH, asks “What are your goals in life? For example, how important is it for [you] to be around to help raise [your] grandkids?” At the South Yuba Club we are here to help people improve lives: getting stronger, happier and generally healthier. The fact is the 84 percent of people don’t understand how much they could benefit from exercise and are afraid to join a health club. That is a shame because they deny themselves and their loved ones the opportunity to live longer, healthier and happier … and maybe be around long enough and active enough to see their grandchildren grow up. — By Phil Carville is a co-owner of the South Yuba Club, www.southyubaclub.com.

“Cyrus Tree Service brought down over 12 trees on our property, some over 100 ft tall, with such precision that we ‘re still amazed at the sight of it all. They were consummate professionals, and when all work was completed, they had neatly stacked the cut up wood and cleaned up the debris. Cyrus Tree Service gets our highest recommendation.” ~ The Walker Family ~

Profile: Best Real Estate Agent

Mimi Simmons, ERA Cornerstone 101 Boulder Street, Nevada City (530) 265-7940 www.mimisimmons.com

Every great team needs inspiration, motivation and a bit of risk. After years of owning a real estate company, Mimi Simmons hand-picked the best business associates and created a real estate sales machine known as Team Simmons. Comprised of Mimi’s friends and associates, Holli Navo, Jodanna Bishop and Tammy Andreozzi, who have worked together for close to nine years, these four smart and savvy business women are the number one team for ERA Cornerstone Realty Group, which Mimi founded in 1992, as well as Nevada County. A fifth-generation native of Nevada County, Mimi built ERA Cornerstone Realty Group up to four offices with 65 agents, and then made the decision in 2006 to give up the managing side and follow her passion for selling real estate. “I was able to create a fine-tuned operation with ‘the girls’ as I so fondly refer to my team,” she says. Each member fulfills their duties which are well suited to each

one’s ability and personality. Holli is the Buyer’s agent for the team; “I really enjoy buyers and I get so much personal satisfaction working with them.” Mimi is a listing broker, yet still has a few clients from her 26-year career that she shows property to. Tammy is the team’s Transaction Coordinator or as she aptly refers to herself “the paper police.” And Jodanna describes her role as the Marketing Director, personal assistant, chief cook and bottle washer. What makes these four ladies excel as a top producing team is that they are all cross-trained. “We work smarter, not harder,” says Simmons, “which is why we have been so successful in a challenged market.” This tactic helped them achieve 52 sides in 2009 resulting in $16 million in sales, and 62 sides in 2010 resulting in over $18 million in sales. Not bad for a county with an average sales price of $293,000. This new year started out with a bang as the team closed 15 sales in the first 10 weeks of the year totaling over $5 million. “People see our enthusiasm, passion and personalized service,” says Mimi, “and they want to be part of the success, whether selling their home or buying one. With the new trend of real estate today, you can’t do all the marketing and paperwork as one agent – it is most efficient to have a team – especially a great team.” — Excerpted from article written by Alysia Shivers, printed with permission.

The owners, family and staff at the Hills Flat Lumber Company in Grass Valley would like to thank everyone who voted in this year’s ‘Best Of’ Competition hosted by The Union. This year’s award marks 12 straight years that Hills Flat Lumber has earned the Best Lumberyard distinction, and what an honor it is! The past few years have seen a lot of changes at Hills Flat Lumber. In 2008 we opened our new store location in Grass Valley which has allowed us to create new departments and expand a few existing ones. Appliances, Paint, Nursery, Rentals, even Outdoor Living furniture and accessories. All this and we still have all of the many traditional hardware items like Lumber, Tools and Building Supplies. along with great customer service from a friendly, knowledgeable staff. To show our appreciation Hills Flat Lumber would like to take a moment to cast our vote in the ‘Best Customers’ category. When you’re in the lumber and hardware business you work with your customers all day, every day. You help them by answering their questions, help them to choose the right products and materials for their projects, even help them load their cars and trucks. In the 80+ years that Hills Flat Lumber has served Nevada County residents they have proven themselves to be worthy of a ‘Best Of’ award all their own. Best Customers, Best Community, Best Neighbors … take your pick because they all fit equally well. Nevada County residents deserve to be recognized for the great community supporters that they are. The Hills Flat Lumber staff loves working with their loyal customers and look forward to serving them again and again for many years to come. So ‘Thank You’ Nevada County for recognizing Hills Flat Lumber again this year. Here’s to a prosperous and healthy 2011 for Nevada County and all of its award worthy residents. — By Jeff Pardini, Hills Flat Lumber
