Campus News Chick-Fil-A Express finally opens at Texas Southern The five easiest trends to follow for Spring 2015

BY LENZI CAUSEY Managing Editor

After a long, anticipating wait, in correlation with Sodexo and Chick-Fil-A, a brand new constructed restaurant has opened here in the student center of TSU. Great things have been said about its customer service and quality, but it has raised many students’ interests that it is only an ‘Express’ version of the restaurant; it was expected to be full-menu. “The service was better than I thought,” said Brenae Donald, a senior. “I didn’t know they would have separate things, and thought they would have combos, but overall it was good and I expect to eat there again when the line dies down.” Junior Briana Harper had a similar experience, stating she was also disappointed

by the fact the restaurant does not have combination deals. “Customer service wise, it’s good, they even say ‘My Pleasure!’, like we were looking for [at a Chick-Fil-A restaurant]. My only concern is the [lack of] combos.” Birtenna Bennett, Director of Student Services of the university, spoke about the process and the students’ concerns about the restaurant in a recent interview. “The process for putting a Chick-Fil-A in the Student Center for our students began about a year-and-a-half ago when we took a poll for the “Top Three Fast Food Restaurants” from our students, and Chick-Fil-A was number one, hands down.” She stated that after students spoke

with her about the combination deals’ lack of availability, she made it a mission to check on accommodating that concern. “Sodexo is the food-provider on campus. They went over the menu with Chick-FilA, and their decision was to make it an ‘Express’ [Chick-Fil-A], which gives it a limited menu,” Bennett said. “I am not sure how soon it will happen, but I have addressed that with Sodexo. My concerns are the concerns of the students, and I want students to pay what they are used to and comfortable with paying.” Hopefully for students who wish to save a few more TigerPoints, they will be compensated with the addition of combination deals and continue to get premium and satisfactory customer service.

Do you remember the Negris Original t-shirt design that was the craze on campus around 1997? Travis Hamilton, now the full-fledged women’s fashion designer of Negris Leburm has stayed the race in following his dreams and is now set to launch his fourth collection called “Le Noir est Joli”. The elegant and contemporary collection will be showcased in the upcoming New York’s Fashion Week Fall 2015 February 12-19. Having graduated from Texas Southern in 1997 with a marketing degree from the Jesse H. Jones School of Business, Hamilton has used the

valuable lessons taught to him not only during class time but during his professor office hours to grind out 18 years in an industry plagued with racial stereotypes. However, since the brand has grown, the costs associated with producing a successful show has grown significantly. Therefore, Hamilton has turned to Kickstarter, a fundraising website for creative projects, to raise the necessary funds from those who are passionate about fashion to help reveal this 2015 fall collection that identifies with woman of personality, attitude, and elegance. “Negris Lebrum is ripe for success,” Hamilton says of his opportunity to showcase his line at New York Fashion Week. “Given today’s social climate Negris is right on time in bridging the gap between black and white. Texas Southern University is where I launched Negris with my 12 t-shirt designs almost 20 years ago and thanks to all the support I’ve been given over the years I am still following my dreams.”

Campus News Getting back in school mode after winter break BY KENNETH WARE JR. Life & Style Writer Returning to Texas Southern University from a long, lazy winter break is difficult. TSU Tigers have well over a month off before they are expected to return for the spring semester. During this time students enjoy a variety of pastimes from earning extra cash for next semester to spending time with family. “I look forward to seeing all my relatives and friends back home during Christmas break and eating my grandma’s cooking,” Brent Nichols, a freshman studying telecommunication said. Many students put off preparing for the upcoming semester. When the first day arrives, these students find that they are overwhelmed and unprepared to begin class. Time seems to move more slowly for students. Classes feel longer, homework becomes an increasingly tedious task and it feels as though there is an eternity stretched out between now and summer break. Students can avoid feeling doomed before the semester starts with a little preparation beforehand. “I am registered for all my spring classes, and I have already started researching where I can find my books online and save some money,” Trayce Bryant, a junior study-

ing computer science said. If you go home during winter break, plan on returning to campus at least two or three days before the spring semester begins. Many students wait to take the very last plane out before classes start, allowing no time for unexpected delays. As a result, these students often miss the first few classes of the semester or the chance to purchase textbooks for class. “The spring semester begins on January 20 and I will be back in Houston on January 13,” Nichols said. Allow time for the surprises, inconveniences and circumstances that you cannot anticipate so that they do not interfere with your college success. Based on your grades from the fall semester, especially if they are not what you expected, it may be time to reprioritize your personal schedule and goals so that you can get organized and raise your GPA over the spring semester. Identify where you fell short in the past few months. Did you skip class? Fail to complete homework assignments? Arrive late on a daily basis? Whatever the excuse, as soon as you can identify why you fell short of your goals, you can begin making new ones. “My first semester as a college student

wasn’t bad, but I know that I can do a lot better,” Dwight Micheaux, a freshman studying accounting said. It is also time to get organized. Clean out your folders and start fresh. Unlike high school, college starts twice a year. If you would not use a tattered notebook that has already been all but destroyed to begin a new year, avoid using a notebook like this for your second semester as well. College classes are full of information. If possible, make sure you have a notebook for each class. Organize your new materials to fit your new schedule, and store all of your old papers in a safe place that is out of your way. Remember: Do not check your brain at the door when you return to TSU for the spring semester. Focus on achieving your goals and hold fast to the schedule you have outlined. The best way to break into the second semester is to proceed full steam ahead. Establishing a consistent routine at the beginning of each semester is one of the best ways to ensure that your schedule is manageable. Stay thirsty for knowledge and good luck Tigers!

Member of Texas Southern University band dies in tragic car accident BY MARIEA BOYD Campus News Editor Students mourn the loss of Brandon Guidry after his untimely death the morning before Christmas Eve due to a head on collision with a drunk driver. After leaving a friends birthday party late Tuesday night in Beaumont, Texas, twenty-two yearold Guidry was driving on I-10 when an alleged drunk driver on the wrong side of the interstate hit Guidry’s car head on. “He came home for a surprise birthday party for Trenisha, and he came to visit for a little while on his way back home to Houston,” Guidry’s mother, Pamela Guidry, said. Guidry died at the scene, and the driver was taken to the hospital with injuries. Investigators say the Baytown driver; Justin Edward Davis’, alcohol level was three times the legal driving limit when he was brought into the hospital. Edwards has been charged with intoxicated manslaughter, after admitting to drinking “a couple” of drinks before driving. Investigators say Davis told them he realized he was “going the wrong way, and was trying to turn around” before hitting Guidry’s car. “That driver should have never got behind the wheel to go anywhere,” Guidry said. “And if he was with family and friends they should not have let him leave whatever premises he was on, at all.”

Davis is currently out on a thirty thousand dollar bond awaiting trial. Brandon Guidry was a graduate from Central High-School and a

Via Brandon Guidry’s Facebook Page student at Texas Southern University where he was senior studying healthcare administration. Guidry was also a member of the uni-

versity’s band, The Ocean of Soul playing the piccolo. Although the university was closed for Winter break, word spread quickly throughout the student body. “Brandon was a very sweet person with a big heart,” Lauren Hicks, former captain of the marching band majorette dance team Motion of the Ocean said. “He never ceased to make me laugh, I will miss him greatly.” One of Brandon’s closest friends was some of the first to get the news. “His little brother was asking me ‘where’s brother?’ ‘wheres brother?’ and I [wasn’t] able to give him an answer,” Angel Gutierrez, Guidry’s friend, related tearfully.“My best friend was definitely something special and he touched many hearts with a smile and kindness, I never met anyone who would do for those whom he had not met before.” Brandon was scheduled to graduate in the Fall of 2015. Friends and family of Guidry has created a GiveForward account that you can give to help the Guidry family in there time of need.

Life & Style The five easiest trends From Fashion Week Campus Fleek: to follow forto Spring 2015 The five easiest trends to follow for spring 2015 BY LENZI CAUSEY Managing Editor

After scavenging through Glamour, Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar magazines, we have comprised a list of the most wearable and accessible trends to rock this spring. Every season, a specific color emerges in every major designer’s line at during Fashion Week. This spring’s color? Yellow. Yellow, frankly, happens to be one of those colors that is “hit or miss.” Either you love or hate it, and when someone mentions the color, you nine times out of ten have imagined the shade from the primary color triangle. If you haven’t previously been a fan of yellow, explore your options in shading. If canary isn’t for you, try a mustard yellow, a little closer to neutral and not as bright or use it as a pop of color if the idea of you wearing a yellow dress or top is too much for you to fathom. Either way, the shade is in this season. According to Harper’s Bazaar, no one can get over over-alls. They can actually be dressed up or down, but still factor in mostly as a street-style component. A favorite look over the boards is layering overalls with either a starched, white button down or, if you’re bold enough to do it, chambray. Play it up a little with over-alls! It will be warming up soon, so next on the list, shorts. Not just any shorts, however. Culottes. The knee length, relaxed-fitting but still super chic, shorts. Since they do have a more loose fit, these work more with tailored or structured tops (such as a button down, we all have one), and to add a little glam: a short, shimmering statement necklace. Spring as an actual season has not yet arrived, so in the mean time we’ve been seeing models wrapped up in (you guessed it!)-- pon-

chos. According to Harper’s Bazaar, Burberry blanket coats closed the Fall 2014 runway and embroidered boho Valentino versions were seen in its Parisian catwalk last season, the idea of the poncho re-emerged. Not at all the traditional poncho, and often referred to as a cape, this outerwear option comes in a number of shapes and fabrics. Some in more loose poly-blends, and others made out of wool, they vary in level of warmth, but have topped off the season nothing short of chic. Last but not least, a trend carrying from the fall over into the spring is white-onwhite. Quickly becoming a favorite, modernday style icons have been spotted sporting the trend down to their shoes and even down to their fingernails! Although the look can be monochromatic (a common word in the fashion world lately), one can spice up the look with a colored bag or shoe in yellow (as previously discussed) or any other bright, eye-catching shade for a pop of color. Trends are forever changing and reoccuring, but with the help of these magazines and social media, one can try very hard to stay updated. Hope to see you in one of these trends on the Tiger Walk!

“Overalls are surprising purely for their staying power. Girls continued to embrace the all-in-one and look concurrently cool and playful at the same time” - Harper’s Bazaar

Brady has been no stranger to the playoffs or the Super Bowl considering he has played 28 postseason games, and is the all-time leader with 19 wins, not to mention making his sixth Super Bowl appearance. This time around will make for an interesting Super Bowl for a number of reasons; Russell Wilson could become the only quarterback to win the Super Bowl in two of his first few years in the NFL. Tom Brady will only add to his successful career if he manages to win his fourth ring, which brings more interest considering he is thirty-seven and way at the tail end of his career, though he will still go down as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever. These two teams are pretty steady on both sides of the ball. The Pats boast a high-octane offense ranked fourth in the league with a defense ranked eighth. With the Seahawks boasting the number one ranked defense of course backed up by Russell Wilson and workhorse running back Marshawn Lynch giving them the number one rushing attack. The Pats will need to keep the mobile Wilson in the pocket and make sure to contain Lynch, as well as keeping turnover to a bare minimum against the Hawks stacked defense. The Seahawks will need to keep hold to rushing, as their 27th ranked passing game may not be enough against the Pats defense, and use their monster defense to keep Brady and the Pats out of the end zone. Whatever plans these teams decide to go with in the coming weeks will make for another exciting battle for the Lombardi Trophy.

Politics Brutal and dangerous organization, Boko Haram, continues attacks to force its beliefs BY LENZI CAUSEY Managing Editor

Boko Haram, an organization formed in the year 2002 by Islamic insurgents has been in recent news because of multiple acts of violence in Nigeria and other surrounding provinces. Some major news outlets and figures have held the opinion that these acts have been undermined and even ignored compared to other events in recent history. According to Al Jazeera, on January 11th, at least 16 people were killed because two young girls, as suicide bombers, detonated their bombs in a market in Nigeria. It was the second attack involving these same details. When a correspondent spoke with a witness from the market, he said, “I saw their dead bodies. They are two young girls of about 10 years of age …,” and went on to describe their mangled bodies. The first bombing attack was in November, and 48 were killed by one bomber during a school assembly, but we remember this organization vividly after the Bring Back Our Girls campaign last April with the kidnapping of 200 schoolgirls. Boko Haram (meaning “Western education is forbidden”) named officially Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (“People Committed to the Prophet’s Teachings for Propagation and Jihad”), is known as a terrorist, Islamic movement pushed by its own militia. It is based out of Nigeria, but has three other counterparts: Chad, Niger, and Cameroon. The organization has since gained control of Northern Nigeria and have begun to work in the surrounding areas. It has been it’s mission to eliminate western education and promote and force Islam beliefs. Sunday January 18th, it was breaking news that terrorist activity had again taken place in Makxy and Mabass of northern Cameroon, as Boko Haram members kidnapped

about 80 hostages and burned houses in their path, according to CNN. Three of the hostages were soon found dead. Cameroon’s Information Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary confirmed the attacks and estimated number of hostages, including children whose ages range from 10 to 15 years old. “They burnt to ashes almost 80 houses,” he said. Unfortunately for some who were unaware of Boko Haram member speculation in Cameroon, they fled there from Nigeria to avoid possibly being captured and wound up in the middle of the madness. During this time in Cameroon, the first set of troops sent from Chad had arrived there to aid in the fight against Boko Haram. They arrived in over 400 vehicles, that

being nearly a measurement of how much force they intended to put forth. “[the soldiers] are coming in with dozens of tanks, armored vehicles and other military equipment,”Cameroon defense ministry spokesman Col. Didier Badjeck told a investigative journalist from CNN. Some natives have reacted out of fear, and have declared the group “the monsters of Nigeria,” as most members are in that particular area and in lesser numbers in other areas. Cameroon’s President, Paul Biya, told diplomats recently that Boko Haram was “a global threat” that calls “for a global response,” and soonafter, his country has been greatly affected. Now that events are happening more frequently and Boko Haram is becoming much more of a threat, there is a worldwide watch on Nigeria and the affected areas.

Chadian troops were sent to Cameroon to aid in the fight against the Boko Haram attacks.
