Girls take centre court on Father Marcian day 3 DON’T MISS By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net

T

he 31st Father Marcian Peters Basketball Classic moved into day three at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium yesterday as the girls’ division took centre stage. Scooter Reid, the tournament director, said showcasing the young aspiring female players is one of the major benefits of the tournament and one of the reasons why its reinstatement is vital to the growth of girls’ basketball. “This was a day dominated by the girls except for a few primary boys’ games we were slightly behind on, but we like for day three to showcase everything there is to show from the girls,” he said. “The girls are progressing and you see some amazing talent. We had one game in the Primary Girls division where one girl scored all

of her team’s 22 points. Tournaments like this, giving them this stage, this is the way to improve the ladies’ basketball programme from the ground up. The ladies’ programme is very lacking but providing the opportunities for the girls is a great thing and a step in the right direction.” The tournament traditionally features scores of teams from the primary girls and boys, junior girls and boys, intermediate boys and senior girls. The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture’s staff facilitates the event. After a year off in 2015, the tournament returned this winter with some welcomed changes, most notably to its efficiency and scheduling. “Having the tournament back has been an extremely exciting experience. You can see it by the amount of people we have had every night and the amount of teams participating,” Reid said

“We have adjusted ourselves well and changed some things. One of the complaints we have had with scheduling, everything has been running smooth, the coaches can have their teams prepared and we are running on time and on schedule. We have been having quick turnaround and many teams have been eliminated so far. We have better communication with the coaches and administrators and that has made things better in terms of being able to communicate.” Play continues 4pm today at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium and continues everyday through Saturday, December 17. Many of the schools that have stood out thus far have been ones that play regularly throughout their respective seasons and have come into the tournament with an elevated level of preparation. “The talent level has been impressive, especially with the Cath-

olic schools who have their league and also with the Bahamas Scholastic Association leagues who are proficient playing in the primary schools,” Reid said. “As far as the GSSSA and BAISS schools they are lacking in the primary school divisions for the most part, but hats off to the coaches who have been practicing hard to prepare these teams.” • Scores from yesterday’s session: Primary Girls St Francis and Joseph – 21 def. Vilmar to give Eagles ‘big boost’ By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net BASKETBALL prep superstar D’Andre Vilmar is expected to have an immediate impact with his new programme this fall as he heads into his senior year and final year of NCAA recruitment. The Philadephia Inquirer named Vilmar to the preseason All-South Jersey Second Team. The 6’4” senior guard is considered one of the top two-way players in the division and his Paul VI Eagles squad has also been ranked No.4 in the South Jersey Preseason top 25. “The Eagles will look to build on a strong finish to last season with a big boost from senior D’Andre Vilmar, a transfer from Roman Catholic,” the Inquirer said. “Sophomore El Khana Hidalgo, a transfer from Life Center who will sit 30 days. Senior guards Justin Ryder and Keenan Wise are experienced perimeter players and senior forward John Calvello is an active presence in the paint.” Last season, the Eagles finished 14-13 and lost in the first round of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament. With major Division I offers in his sights, Vilmar decided to relocate for the final season of his high school career and transfer to Paul VI High School in Haddonfield, New Jersey for the upcoming fall semester. He joined the Eagles programme after spending the last two seasons with the Roman Catholic High School Cahillites in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “At Roman, our head coach retired, a lot of players left and it just wasn’t going to feel the same,” Vilmar said. “My host family I live with, their son is going to Paul VI with me, my parents think it’s a good move, my aunt and I have been talking about it a whole lot, my AAU coach thinks it’s a good fit so I’m ready. I feel like going to come there and with some new scenery. “I’m going to get to play my game and be more free to do the things I know I can do and the things everybody else in my circle knows I can do. It’s going to be a great year and I feel like we can make a ‘cinderella’ run. We can really make some noise in south Jersey.” With the Cahillites, the 6’4”

I felt like this was something different and this was the right thing to do at this point,” he said. “I don’t feel like God would’ve opened this door if this wasn’t where he wanted me to go. This really came out of nowhere. This wasn’t something planned, he just

opened this door and I feel like this is the right thing. I’ve been praying a lot about it and I just feel like this is what he wanted me to do.” Earlier this month, Vilmar announced via Twitter that he has recently received offers from the Oklahoma, Long Beach State and Buffalo. In the offseason he participated with coach Darrell Sears’ Jaguars at various tournaments, including the the Big Foot Hoops Las Vegas Classic presented by Hal Pastner in

Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Texas Hoops Great American Shootout in Duncanville, Texas. Prior to the summer circuit, Vilmar received one Division I scholarship offer from the Colorado St Rams while other schools such as La Salle, Penn and Iona have all showed considerable interest. Vilmar left Abaco in the sixth grade when he moved to live with his family in Delaware for a better opportunity at excelling in the sport.

THE BIGGEST ATLANTIS CROWN TO DATE JUST days ahead of the biggest Atlantis Crown competition to date, meet organiser Cindy Scharns forecasts that the weekend will be dominated by high level gymnastics and encouraged fans to come out. The annual gymnastics competition, set for December 15-18 at the Atlantis resort, will feature 910 athletes from The Bahamas, United States, Canada, Panama and Suriname. Additionally, the Region 5 Elite Ambassador Team, made up of the United States’ two top senior elite and two top junior elite gymnasts from the World Championships, will be in action. Team members Aria Brusch, Shania Adams, Shilese Jones and Gabby Perea are also seeking to bring more awareness to gymnastics in The Bahamas. “We are excited to be returning to what we consider our second home to host the sixth annual Atlantis Crown,” Schrans said. “This year’s event has continued to grow and will boast 910 athletes representing 63 gymnastics clubs and five countries. In addition, we will feature over 78 Bahamian athletes - male and female - competing from level one thru level nine. “A special thank you goes to the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture, Gymnastics Federation of the Bahamas and the Atlantis Resort for their continued support. We encourage you to join us for a weekend of fun and high level gymnastics competition.” This year, organisers will introduce the trampoline and tumbling competition to the line-up which also includes the beam, uneven bars and the floor routine. As a result, club participation has increased by 26 per cent. The Bahamas will be represented by three clubs Bahamas Star Gymnastics, Nassau Nastics and Grand Bahama Gymnastics. Virginia Kelly, marketing director of sports tourism, said this year’s competition will go to a “whole new level”. “The Atlantis Crown has proven to be a great addition to our annual sports tourism calendar,” she said. “Over the past five years we have seen the number of athletes almost tripled and this year, with the addition of a men’s trampoline and tumbling component, this takes the event to a new level, not to mention the growth impact on the number of room nights and the overall revenue boost. This year we could potentially see 3,000 plus athletes and visitors.” The special guests include Svetlana Boginskay, three-time Olympic champion and Sam Mikulak, 2012 US Olympian.

To all haters, the Cowboys’ loss didn’t stop my show OKAY, let’s get this one out of the way. Despite my Cowboys losing for only the second time this season, again to the Giants, my trip to New York was far from being in vain! Sorry to disappoint all you ‘haters’, but the Cowboys’ loss didn’t stop my show. I found it most amusing how masses of ‘haters’ took to Facebook ‘trolling’ me with their ‘pathetic’ Cowboys hate memes and weak attempts at ‘trash talk,’ the only reason I didn’t respond is that it was only the second loss of the year for the Cowboys. I’ve had 11 straight weeks to talk trash to all of you ‘haters’ so enjoy your fleeting moment while it lasts. Now since I don’t have a 12th straight win by my Cowboys to brag about, and piss you haters off, I will instead share with you the reasons why my trip was a success and well worth it in so many ways, despite the Cowboys ‘toting’ an ‘L’. That should still irk you haters sufficiently. FAMILY FIRST Whenever I get to visit my uncle Nick in New Jersey it’s always a must. Apart from connecting with my father’s side of the family which is important, it gives me the opportunity to enjoy some of the best Spanish cuisine on the planet. Dining in his award winning restaurant, ‘Jai Alai’, is a delight. Paella, chicken tarragon, solomillo, not to mention the calamari, fresh chorizo and tortilla. Libations in abundance to please the palate. Priceless! Not only do I have blood relatives in the New York/

New Jersey area, I have several college teammates and stand up comedians who are like brothers, so seeing them and hanging out in their ‘backyard’ is quite a good time, on multiple levels. Yes, there are some things, very few, more important than my Cowboys. FYI! ONLY YOUR FRIENDS Speaking of friends, and brother from another mother, my boy Dwayne Harris WR/KR/PR for the Giants, and former Cowboy did it again. Last year, I reminded him that I didn’t come all the way from the Bahamas not to see a touchdown from him. So what did he do? Only return the game winning kickoff with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter. Dagger! Game over! This year, no kickoff returns but numerous dynamic, momentum shifting plays, especially in kick coverage, pinning the Cowboys deep in their own territory multiple times with outstanding special teams tackling at the ‘gunner position’, the most important on the kick coverage units. Yet another dagger. Dwayne is truly a gifted athlete and special teams ace, as he plays both ways, returning kicks and punts as well as ‘gunner’ on cov-

erage. I’m still upset the Cowboys lost him in free agency last season. While partying with Dwayne after the game, my wife Jamie and I eluded to the fact that he kills the Cowboys in Met Life Stadium annually now. Cooly he replied “Bigly....I always want to remind ‘Jerry’ he spent his money incorrectly in free agency, after another serving of humble pie in NY for the second year in a row, I agree, Jerry Jones missed, and now the Giants are a hit on special teams. THE GAME Cold, cold, cold, cold, cold!! It was snowing the whole game long, which affected both teams. Not using it as an excuse, but the cold was a factor in the outcome of the game. (Until you ‘Dolfans’ travel to see your squad play in Buffalo, New England or New York in December, go stick something in your blow hole and shut up). It affected me watching in the stands, so I can only imagine the players on the field showing their mettle by playing in short sleeves and no under shirts or warmers whatsoever. That’s why Dez Bryant got ‘X’ out by Giants CB Jenoris Jenkins, who played big all night. Jenkins wore

He was warm, Dez was frozen like a ‘white walker.’ It affected Cowboys K Dan Bailey’s 55-yard field goal before the half also, the footing was less than desirable. It’s obvious that the Giants are young Dak Prescott’s nemesis so far in his rookie season, as were the Eagles to Troy Aikman and the entire NFC East division was to Tony Romo at some point! This too shall pass. The Giants won both games by a total of four points. So kill the domination talks etc. It’s just good, old fashioned NFC East football. Throw records out the

window in that division, when it’s a division game. Yes the Giants defence is stout, OBJ is the ‘Freddie Mercury’ of the NFL. Colourful, flamboyant and definitely entertaining. (Yes, he still stares at opponents ‘boungies’ during pre games. I couldn’t look but my wife took one for the team, and confirmed the ogling on OBJ’s part.) Nonetheless his game winning 61-yard catch and run, and subsequent ‘moonwalk’ in the end zone celebrating his score, was classic. I tip my hat to the Giants for doing what no one else in the NFL has this season, beat my Cowboys. In my opinion they did us a favour, it gives the Cow-

boys the pre-playoff ‘wake up call’ they needed, time to refocus, work out the kinks and start the playoff run. Since we are the only team to have clinched a playoff berth thus far. Also, if we meet the Giants in the playoffs we will beat them when it counts, and I will have the last laugh Jeff Albury (JBLN Commissioner and life long Giant fan). Until then enjoy your moment Giants fans, when it’s all said and done you will be able to say your team gave the eventual Super Bowl champions their only two losses of the season. And besides, you can’t spell Dallas without two L’s. Until next week, go hard, or go home!

Frazier gets triple-double, Pelicans beat Suns 120-119 in OT By BOB BAUM AP Sports Writer PHOENIX (AP) — Triple-doubles are nothing new to Tim Frazier. He had five with the Maine Red Claws, where he was D-League player of the year in 2015. Now he can add one with the New Orleans Pelicans, and that is a much bigger deal. Frazier had 14 points, a career-high 11 rebounds and 11 assists, helping the Pelicans rally from a 15-point second-half deficit to beat the Phoenix Suns 120-119 in overtime Sunday night, snapping a five-game losing streak. “You just have to understand he is just a tough kid,” Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. “That is what we really like about him. We ask him to do a lot of things. We ask him to do things that All-Star guards do, and he never says anything. He just goes out and gives us the effort.” Suns coach Earl Watson knew who deserved the credit for New Orleans’ win. “Tim Frazier, simple as that,” Watson said. “Tim Frazier changed the game and had a triple-double. Look at the plus-minus.

He was plus-18. He was the biggest difference for their team.” The quiet Frazier, a thirdyear guard out of Penn State, acknowledged the performance “is a great accomplishment.” “It feels good but I am glad we got the win,” he said. “It wouldn’t mean much without the win.” The victory for New Orleans came despite a 4-for-17 shooting performance by NBA scoring leader Anthony Davis. He finished with 14 points, 16 below his average, but grabbed 12 rebounds. “That is why we have a team,” Davis said. “That is why we have other guys on the floor. Guys stepped up and made shots when I couldn’t. That is good for us.” Eric Bledsoe scored 32 for the Suns. Tyson Chandler added 14 points and 21 rebounds, both season highs. Frazier made one of two free throws with 3.6 seconds left to put the Pelicans up 120-116. Jared Dudley sank a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it a one-point final margin. Jrue Holiday hit four free throws in the final 14.3 seconds and scored 23 points

by the Pelicans on Saturday, scored 11 quick points off the bench in the first half, including 3-of-3 shooting on 3-pointers, and finished with 17. It was the 201st game of Williams’ career. He has played for Golden State, Charlotte, Oklahoma City and San Antonio. Williams had been playing for the Oklahoma City Blue DLeague team.

Frazier got the ball, was fouled and put the game out of reach when he hit the second of two free throws. The teams have gone to overtime in both meetings this season. Phoenix won 112-111 in New Orleans on Nov. 4. The Suns were trying for their second two-game

winning streak of the season but once again couldn’t hold a lead late. It’s tough for the veteran Chandler on this extremely young team. “I’m a competitor. I want to win,” he said. “These losses aren’t easy on me.” Langston Galloway sank four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to help the Pelicans force overtime. Holiday’s two free throws put New Orleans up 110108 with 40.6 seconds to go in regulation, and Bledsoe

tied it with a driving lefthanded layup with 35.2 seconds left in the period. Phoenix had the last shot in regulation, but Bledsoe’s long 3-pointer was off the mark. The Suns took the lead with an early 14-1 run and never trailed until the last 5 minutes of regulation. They led by 15 in the third quarter. FAST START Reggie Williams, signed

Giants beat the Cowboys again, end Dallas’ 11-game win streak By TOM CANAVAN AP Sports Writer EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants won two Super Bowls under Tom Coughlin by being able to pressure the opposing quarterback and getting just enough big plays from Eli Manning and the offence to pull out a lot of close games. In coach Ben McAdoo’s first season since taking over for Coughlin, the Giants (9-4) are using the same formula in a bid to end a four-year playoff drought. It’s a formula that also has put the only two blemishes on the Dallas Cowboys’ record (11-2) this season. The Giants’ defence befuddled rookie quarterback Dak Prescott on a cold, damp night, and Manning overcame a miserable performance to hook up with Odell Beckham Jr on a go-ahead, 61yard catch-and-run late in the third quarter as New York ended the Cowboys’ 11-game winning streak with a 10-7 victory Sunday . “I think that everything is in front of us,” Giants linebacker Jonathan Casillas said. “I think that we can be as good as we want to be. As long as we keep our head down and keep grinding away — it is still a long season. We have some games left and I am planning on playing in January. That is the goal right now, to get through December and play in January.” If the defence plays the way it did against Dallas, the Giants are going back to the playoffs for the first time since winning the Super Bowl in February 2012 against the Patriots. Steve Spagnuolo’s unit limited Dallas to a season-low 260 yards , held the Cowboys to 1 of 15 on third down and didn’t allow Eze-

place teams in the NFC wild-card race. Dallas is home next weekend against Tampa Bay (8-5). The Giants host Detroit (9-4). REPLACING JPP: Rookie free agent Romeo Okwara started for Pierre-Paul at left end and led the Giants with eight tackles and one of their three sacks. It was his first career sack. Linebacker Devon Kennard also filled in at defensive end and tackle in passing situations. He had six tackles and a sack. DAK NOT A COLDWEATHER GUY: Prescott didn’t seem to like the cold and it didn’t help that the ball was a little wet at times. He finished 17 of 37 for 165 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. “Knowing how talented our offence is, having high expectations of myself and stalling drive after drive, it gets frustrating,” Prescott said.

kiel Elliott to bust a big run despite gaining 107 yards rushing. New York cornerback Janoris Jenkins blanketed star receiver Dez Bryant for the second straight game, limiting him to one catch late and forcing a fumble on the same play. Bryant had two catches in two games against the Giants this season as the Cowboys scored a total of 26 points. They were scoring almost 28 per game this season entering Sunday night. While saying they didn’t execute well, veteran Cowboys tight end Jason Witten gave credit to the Giants in a game they played without star defensive end Jason

Pierre-Paul. He is out for the rest of the regular season because of a sports hernia. “They were pressuring us,” Witten said. “They were bringing some heat and we weren’t able to capitalise on it. I tell you what, our defence kept us in the game. I thought they did a heck of a job. Giving us a chance, we didn’t play good enough.” Beckham, who turned a short slant into a touchdown with an incredible burst of speed, felt the same way about the Giants’ offence. “To me personally when you are not on the field and seeing what that defence does, that makes all

the difference in the world,” he said. “The quote I’ve heard for a long time is offence wins games, defence wins championships, and this is a championship defence.” • Here are five takeaways from the game: THE ROAD AHEAD: With three games left in the regular season, the Cowboys’ magic number for winning the NFC East is two. Any combination of wins by the Cowboys and losses by the Giants totalling two gives Dallas the division title. New York still has the best record among second-

NO ROMO: Prescott’s struggles against the fierce Giants pass rush and sticky secondary didn’t have Dallas thinking about whether longtime starter Tony Romo should take over at quarterback. Finally recovered from his back issues, Romo is the clear backup these days to the superb rookie. But Prescott wasn’t superb against New York. So, naturally, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was asked about Romo. He smiled and, with emphasis, said no when the subject of Romo seeing action came up. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was asked if at any point he considered turning to Romo. Again, an emphatic no. “We just feel good about Dak Prescott playing quarterback for us right now,” Garrett said.

Bayern and Arsenal to meet again in Champions League By GRAHAM DUNBAR AP Sports Writer NYON, Switzerland (AP) — In another edition of a one-sided Champions League rivalry, Bayern Munich will play Arsenal in the round of 16 for the third time in five seasons. Bayern ousted Arsenal in backto-back seasons in the first knockout round in 2013 and ‘14, and also in 2005. Still, they traded home wins in the group stage last season, and this time Arsenal is seeded so will host the return match on March 7. “Arsenal are a strong team and I think currently they are better than in previous years,” Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said. Also in yesterday’s draw, defending champion Real Madrid will host Napoli first on February 15, and Barcelona will travel first to play Paris Saint-Germain on February 14. Madrid is tackling history this season. It set a club record streak of 35 games unbeaten on Saturday, and is aiming to be the first team in 25 years of the Champions League format to retain the European Cup trophy. “This is a stiff challenge,” Madrid director Emilio Butragueno said.

“We have to be at our best to break history. We have to be focused on every detail.” One of the best balanced round of 16 draws in recent years — with Bayern and Madrid unseeded as runners-up in a group — was also dominated by the elite. All 16 teams come from leagues ranked in Europe’s top six when the season started. Leicester is the only round of 16 newcomer and was drawn to play first at Sevilla, the Europa League winner for the past three seasons. Also, it was: Manchester City vs. Monaco; Benfica vs. Borussia Dortmund; FC Porto vs. Juventus; and Bayer Leverkusen vs. Atletico Madrid. The Man City-Monaco pairing will pit the underachieving defence of coach Pep Guardiola’s team against the highest scorers in any of the top European leagues. Monaco is averaging three goals per game in the French league. “We are the best attack in Europe, we score goals,” Monaco vice president Vadim Vasilyev said. “We should travel there fearless and play our football.” Borussia Dortmund, which set a Champions League record by scoring 21 goals in a six-game group stage, will

BALLON D’OR: RONALDO VOTED BEST IN WORLD FOR 4TH TIME MADRID (AP) — After giving a European Championship title to Portugal and another Champions League trophy to Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo ends 2016 with something just for himself — his fourth world player of the year award. Ronaldo yesterday won his third Ballon d’Or award, which this year is being handed out by France Football magazine separately from FIFA. Ronaldo also took home the Ballon d’Or prize in 2013 and 2014, and the FIFA award in 2008 while still playing for Manchester United. The Portugal forward is also in contention for FIFA’s prize this year, along with Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann, who finished second and third to Ronaldo yesterday, respectively. “This was likely the best year of my career, individually and collectively,” Ronaldo said in a pre-recorded video. “It was unforgettable.” Only Ronaldo and Messi have been voted the best in

the world since 2007, when Kaka won the prize. Messi won a record fifth award last year. “For me it’s a great honour to receive my fourth golden ball,” Ronaldo said. “I never thought in my mind to win (it) four times, so I’m so pleased, I’m so happy. I have to thank all my teammates, the national team, Real Madrid, all the people, all the players who helped me win this individual award.” Messi was runner-up for the fifth time in his career, while Griezmann finished third after a remarkable year with France and Atletico Madrid. Luis Suarez was fourth and Barcelona teammate Neymar fifth in the results announced by the Paris-based magazine. Ronaldo teammate Gareth Bale, who led Wales to the semi-finals at Euro 2016, was sixth. Leicester had Riyad Mahrez finishing seventh and Jamie Vardy eighth.
