Bahamas vs Venezuela in Davis Cup 1st round By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net

ith the Bahamas drawn to play Venezuela in the first round of the American Zone II Davis Cup tie in February, the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association is hoping that the interest will increase for the Giorgio Baldacci Invitational Tournament. The invitational is set for December 19-23 at the National Tennis Centre and will be mandatory for all players who are on subvention and those who wish to make the national team that will compete in the first round of the Davis Cup tie February 3-5. While the entry deadline is set for Wednesday, December 14, BLTA president Elwood Donaldson said they anticipate that this year’s Davis Cup team of brothers Spencer and Baker Newman, Kevin Major and player/captain Marvin Rolle will all be involved in the invitational where the top four players will automatically make the team. The Bahamas, behind the Newman brothers, pulled off a 2-0 victory over Jamaica in Bolivia to complete the tie and the promotion out of Zone III to Zone II in July. “We are hoping that with the addition of the Newman brothers and the country moving up to Zone II, we will have more players interested in coming out,” Donaldson said. “There’s more prestige and there’s a good possibility of us moving up to Zone One, if we do very well next year. “So we are hoping that players like Philip Major, who wasn’t there last year, will be here to participate as well as Justin Roberts, one of our top collegiate players, will also be here along with some former national team players like Rodney Carey and Devin Mullings.” With the tie on the road, Don-

CHRIS ‘The Fireman’ Brown, the country’s most decorated male track and field athlete, said he’s saddened to hear of the passing of his long-time coach and mentor Michael Coakley, whom he remembered as an “angel” sent from above. Coakley passed away on Friday, December 2 at the Princess Margaret Hospital. He was 69. In an interview with The Tribune from Jamaica where he is vacationing with his family, including his wife Faith, who celebrated her birthday on Tuesday, Brown said Coakley would definitely be missed, but he has some fond memories to keep with him for the rest of his life. “We first met when I was going to Preston Albury High School. He saw that I was an exceptional athlete,” said Brown as he reflect-

QESC BEING TRANSFORMED INTO SPORTING MECCA OF THE CARIBBEAN By BRENT STUBBS Senior Sports Reporter bstubbs@tribunemedia.net THE transformation is coming together for the Queen Elizabeth Sports Centre as it continues to embrace itself as the sporting mecca of the Caribbean. The National Sports Authority, which has been entrusted with the upkeep of the facilities, inclusive of the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium, the Betty Kelly Kenning Swim Complex and the Kendal GL Isaacs Gymnasium, has patted itself on the back for the way things are progressing. The NSA prides itself on turning the gymnasium into a conference room for the successful hosting of the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s annual conference this week. But NSA general manager Jeffrey Beckles said it’s just the beginning of bigger and better things to come. “This facility, which has been sitting for a while, has life and it has a future,” Beckles said as he and NSA chairman Lynden Maycock took the media on a tour of the improvements made to the facilities yesterday.

Photo by Shawn Hanna/Tribune Staff aldson said the Bahamas would have to do what they have to do. “They were able to win last year in altitude in Bolivia, so I understand that Venezuela isn’t as high in altitude so our chances should be pretty good,” Donaldson said. “Our guys are prepared to go through whatever is necessary to win again. “We are planning on sending the team down early to get acclimatised, so they should be fine. We are also hoping to have a larger contingent of fans going to Venezuela than what we

had in Bolivia.” Donaldson reiterated that the invitational is a “mandatory trial” for all players wishing to make the team going to Venezuela. “If the Davis Cup tie was later in the year like this year, we could have a further trial,” Donaldson said. “But it’s very close, so this will be the final trial. “It’s mandatory for all players on subvention and all players who wish to make the Davis Cup tie, as well as the Fed Cup team for the female players.”

The Fed Cup for the ladies will be held in July in Montevideo, Uruguay, where the Bahamas will join Barbados, Bermuda, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Tobago and Uruguay. The teams will be split into four pools with the winners advancing to the playoffs against the number two teams to determine which two nations will advance to Americas Zone Group I in 2018.

“There are days where I still sit down and I reflect on the messages that he would send to me because he was a great mentor to me. We would converse on a regular basis. To know that he’s no longer here really hurts a lot.” Reflecting on the life of Coakley, Brown described him as a “quiet, professional, humble guy, who never got mad,” he said. “He always had a smile on his face. He was just one of those angels, whom God sent to be a part of my life. “He made an impact in my life and I’m very grateful for having him come into my life at the time that he did to help boost my career to where it is today. By RENALDO DORSETT Sports Reporter rdorsett@tribunemedia.net THE premier junior basketball tournament in the country returns next week. After a hiatus for the 2015 edition, the Father Marcian Peters Basketball Classic is all set to host its 31st edition at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium December 10-17. The tournament traditionally features scores of teams from the primary girls and boys, junior girls and boys, intermediate boys and senior girls. The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture’s staff facilitates the event. According to reports, the Ministry was unable to find the necessary funding to host the tournament in 2015. The cancellation impacted the student-athletes in a number of ways because many of the Family Island teams also took the opportunity to participate in the annual Junior Junkanoo Parade. There are a number of preseason and mid-season tournaments for senior boys. That is one of the reasons why the

KUDOS TO MAX D FOR ‘PITCHING’ BASEBALL MOVEMENT FORWARD IT IS not how you start, nor how you get there. Most importantly, it’s how you finish. • The Finish Line, a weekly column, seeks to comment on the state of affairs in local sports, highlighting the highs and the lows, the thrills and the spills and the successes and failures. THE WEEK THAT WAS IT was an early Christmas present for Tahnaj Thomas as he inked his name on a professional contract with the Cleveland Indians baseball organisation on Tuesday. The Grand Bahamian native signed the deal presented by Koby Perez, the director of Latin American Scouting for the Indians, with his sobbing father Sidney Thomas on his side and his deceased mother, Michelle Thomas, looking down from above. Thomas, 17, was also surrounded by his adopted parents Kristy and Castino Sands. Also present were executives, coaches and teammates from the Max Development Programme. For Thomas, it was a great transformation for a player who came to New

Providence at the age of 13 to further enhance his skills with Max D, an organisation that has paved the way for at least six local players to make the step to the minor leagues in the past few years. Thomas’ story was clearly articulated by his father, who could hardly hold back the tears as he related how he and his wife made the decision to send their teenage son from Grand Bahama to New Providence. Considering that Thomas has been an accomplished softball coach in the women’s programme in Grand Bahama, he admitted that he trusted the operators of Max D to take care of his son. Thomas gave a lot of high praise to coaches Geron Sands and Greg Burrows Jr, as well as professional baseball players Antoan Richardson and Albert Cartwright Jr for the role they all played in his son’s success. But Thomas said so much credit must also be given to Kristy and Castino Sands, who opened their home to accommodate his son. They acted as if he was their own son and the elder Thomas said he will be earthly grateful for the role they played in his son’s development.

Perez, overseeing the signing of the contract which would allow Thomas to get a free education at a college of his choice when he chooses to enrol, joined in the chorus in expressing his appreciation to Max D for the development of players like Thomas. Max D, which was founded under the premise of trying to get as many of the local players as possible in the pipeline of major league baseball, has lived up to its obligation, despite the fact that there is no active senior baseball league for the players to hone their skills after they are finished with Freedom Farm or the Junior Baseball League of Nassau. To have scouts coming here from time to time to monitor the progress of the youngsters is a feat within itself for Max D. But they continue to provide the opportunities for as many of the players as possible.

And to have the assistance of both Richardson and Cartwright, who started a resurgence of Bahamian players in the pro ranks in the past decade or so, is a feather in the cap for the Max D programme. Richardson and Cartwright were the first two players to participate on Great Britain’s team at the World Baseball Classic the past two years. This year, they were able to get a total of seven local players in the line-up. Hopefully, in a year or two, with the continued improvement of the players out of the Max D programme, the Bahamas could very well field a team to carry the 242 into the classic. Let’s give Max D a lot of credit for the role they are playing in pushing the baseball movement forward here in the Bahamas. While there’s still a debate going on about who has

and should hold the sanctioning rights for baseball in the country, Max D is quietly making its contribution to get as many players off to the next level. Tahnaj Thomas is the latest in the growing list of players and, if Max D has its way, they could end up producing even more players in the pipeline in the future. THE WEEK AHEAD Christmas is fast approaching and there are some rumours that a number of athletes will have their subventions slashed when the presents are presented. Between now and January, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture has indicated that they intend to either reduce or remove some of the Bahamian Olympians on the list because of their performances in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August. It’s obvious that the team performance was not up to par while the Bahamas collected a pair of medals from Shaunae Miller and the men’s 4 x 400 metre relay team. But does that mean that athletes on the team should have their subventions slashed or removed from the list all together? How

can an athlete go from making the Olympics to being listed as a developmental athlete? Speaking to a number of athletes, there is a lot of concern about the subvention programme because they are not being properly informed about their status. This was certainly not a good showing for the Bahamas at the Olympics, but it wasn’t for the entire Caribbean. So there’s no reason why athletes should be penalised by having their subventions slashed or removed from the list because of their performances. I think we need to show a little more appreciation for our athletes when they get to the Olympics. Not everybody gets to compete on the world’s biggest sporting stage. So when they do, we should cherish them and look at rewarding them rather than chastising them because there are a lot of things that must be in place for athletes to succeed when they get to that level. Christmas is coming. Let’s make this a joyous occasion for our athletes on subventions and those who are expected to join the list for the first time in some of the other sports.

The event serves as the west coast version of the Hoophall Classic that takes place in Springfield, Massachusetts, in January. Ayton has risen to the top of the high school basketball circuit after just a few short years and chose to end his recruitment process before his senior season ever began when he announced his decision to attend Arizona in a press conference broadcasted live on ESPN’s

He is just one major name in a stacked field filled with elite Division I talent, including LiAngelo Ball and LaMelo Ball of Chino Hills, both commits to UCLA, Alex Barcello of Corona del Sol - an Arizona commit - and La Lumiere’s duo of forward Jaren Jackson - a Michigan State

organisers focus on these particular divisions for the players to compete in. In the last edition, hosted in 2014, division winners included Freedom Baptist (primary girls), Temple Christian (primary boys), Harbour Island (junior girls), Aquinas College (junior boys), CR Walker (senior girls) and Queen’s College (intermediate boys). In 2013, Harbour Island All Age School captured three of the six contested divisions – junior boys, intermediate boys and junior girls. Temple Christian won primary boys, The Carlton Francis Shockers won the primary girls’ division and CR Walker won senior girls. Scooter Reid, the tournament director in recent years, told the Tribune in previous interviews that immediate goals would include expanding the reach to have more girls’ teams. “It is our intentions next tournament to have more girls play. Even though the games in the divisions for girls are good, we need to have more girls in the tournament. This was originally a girls’ tournament, so to have a decline in numbers in those divisions is a little disappointing,” he said. “So we would like to tell all the teams or as many as possible, if they want to play they have to bring a girls team.” With a year of additional planning, organisers have had an opportunity to correct several issues which have hindered the tournament in recent years, including eligibility violations. Father Marcian Peters, who passed away in 1981, was known as a national sporting icon for his contributions to basketball and softball as tools of social development. Today the tournament stands as the largest and most popular interschool basketball event.

QE SPORTS CENTRE BEING TRANSFORMED INTO SPORTING MECCA OF THE CARIBBEAN FROM PAGE 1

“As a matter of fact, at the opening on Monday, the Prime Minister and some of our other leaders came in and were really amazed at the transformation of the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium. “What we would like to say is that it was done by all an All-Bahamian talent. The team here at the NSA and LOC Bahamas pooled our resources. We have some creative persons on our team and together we were able to transform the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium and transform the western grandstand of the stadium and transform the Betty Kelly into one of best places to hold a reception.” On the outside of the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium, more than 45,000 square feet in parking space has been paved, providing a smooth access to the service entrance and into the three outdoor basketball courts. “We can now set up and host an exterior event because much like we did with the Aviation conference where we hosted an event and didn’t even go into the stadium, we have multiple means of driving revenue by hosting events outdoors,” Beckles said. “I’m very proud at this time to be a part of the NSA to see where we have been able to achieve as a collective team and to showcase the facilities that we have here at the NSA. We have to show what the future use of these facilities are and how they can play into the

future of our economic life here.” In addition to all of the upgrades to the facilities at the QESC, Beckles said the NSA has replaced the old field on the infield of the TAR Stadium in time for the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl college (American) football game on December 23 at a cost of $800,000. “Once completed, the infield will have a brand new drainage system, irrigation system and will also be celebration Bermuda, similar to that at the National Stadium,” Beckles said. He also noted that the second part of the upgrade involves the development of a throwing practice area for discus, javelin and shot put. “Beckles said they have identified the areas just west of the 110m warm-up stretch where we will have an IAAF approved runway, which was installed by MONDO earlier. “The creation of this throwing area also alleviates the safety concerns that existed at the TAR infield where during the season as many as 400 young track athletes were competing for the same space in the infield as those athletes who were practicing their throwing disciplines,” he said. “So this goes a long way in eliminating that safety issue and allows for coaches and trainers to pay closer attention to their athletes without the hassle of working in a congested area.” Meanwhile, the NSA is also looking at the opening of the Sports Museum in the old bunker opposite

AN INSIDE LOOK at the new sports museum. the TAR Stadium and the KGLI Gymnasium. “This is a World War II bunker on the original site of that was the largest airport in the world in 1942,” Maycock said. “This was where the fighter pilots used to fly out of. It’s a World War II bunker that we have transformed into the NSA Museum. “In this bunker, we will be exhibiting our sporting heroes. Right now we are exhibiting artifacts for the International Civil Aviation Organisation conference.” The field that was dug

up from the infield of the TAR Stadium is being used to cover the ground on the outside of the bunker while on the inside, portions of the floor that was removed from inside the TAR Stadium, has been used to cover the ground. Maycock said they have gotten a lot of assistance from a number of Bahamians who have provided artefacts that they will have on display on the wall and used on the monitors of the large TV screens. “This is a proud day for us. We see this as another

tourist attraction for the Bahamas,” he said. “We have thousands of tourists who come through here on a daily basis. It’s a facility where they can come through and see our sporting heroes.” The museum will be able to secure some funding as persons will be charged a fee of $2-3 to enter to tour the facility and also purchase items from the logo store that will be erected at the back of the museum. Maycock is also hoping that the local schools will be able to take advantage of

the museum by coming in and researching the sports legends on display. Students will be charged $1 for entry into the facility, which cost about $6070,000 for its total restoration. It is expected to be officially opened and in full operation by February 2017. With all of the upgrades to the facilities, Beckles said they have tightened up their security in and around the facilities because the NSA has to ensure that the venues will remain a viable entity for all to enjoy.

Chiefs hold off Raiders 21-13 to take control of AFC West By DAVE SKRETTA AP Sports Writer KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyreek Hill had touchdowns receiving and on a punt return, Kansas City’s defence made life miserable for Oakland quarterback Derek Carr, and the Chiefs beat the Raiders 21-13 on a frigid Thursday night to take control of the AFC West. Charcandrick West also had a touchdown run for the Chiefs (10-3). They moved into a first-place tie with Oakland (10-3) but holds the tiebreaker with two wins over their longtime divisional rival. Carr was 17 of 41 for 117 yards passing, though the ugly stat line wasn’t entirely his fault. Seth Roberts dropped just about everything thrown at him, Amari Cooper couldn’t adjust to a long throw for a wouldbe touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and several more passes were dropped to the rock-hard turf of Arrowhead Stadium on a night when wind chills approached single digits. Alex Smith threw for 261 yards with a touchdown and an interception to help the Chiefs, returning home after back-to-back road wins, beat Oakland for the seventh time in their last eight meetings.

Hill didn’t seem bothered by the cold, scorching the Raiders for a 36-yard TD reception before bringing a punt back 78 yards for another score. It made him the first rookie since Gale Sayers in 1965 with touchdowns on the ground, through the air and on punt and kickoff returns in a single season. It was still 21-3 when the Chiefs lost linebacker Derrick Johnson to an Achilles injury, and that seemed to briefly deflate them. Oakland proceeded to march 92 yards for a touchdown just before halftime. But the Raiders kept coming up empty with their chances in the second half. Smith threw a pick on the second play of the third quarter, but Oakland had to settle for a field goal. And when Smith was stripsacked by Khalil Mack on the next play, the Raiders again had to try a field goal — only this time, holder Marquette King couldn’t get the snap down. The Raiders’ last chance came with about two minutes left, when a questionable pass interference penalty and a fourth-and-4 conversion got them deep into Kansas City territory. But after a false start on fourth-and-1, Carr’s pass toward the end zone was batted incomplete. The Chiefs went on to

pick up the first down they needed to put the game away. CATCHING KELCE Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce had five catches for 101 yards, his fourth consecutive game with at least 100 yards receiving. That matches the franchise record set by former tight end Tony Gonzalez.

That matches Lance Johnstone for the longest streak in franchise history since sacks became official in 1982. He ruptured his right Achilles two years ago and missed the rest of the season. ... Defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches left with back spasms and did not return. Raiders OL Kelechi Osemele was a late scratch with an illness. Safety Karl Joseph was inactive with a toe injury and defensive tackle Stacy McGee was sidelined by an ankle injury.

“I got a lot of knowledge from him, even on his dying bed. He was still mentoring me, telling me what to do and what not to do,” he said. “It was an honour to work with him and to know him. He will definitely be missed. “The memories will always be there. I’m still in shock that he’s gone. But I was happy to sit with him and share some of the memories. He said this was destiny. That was one of the things he talked about on a regular basis.” With 2017 expected to be his last hurrah competing on the international scene, the former national 400m record holder, who has and is still held in high esteem by his peers for his longevity as a top notch competitor, Brown said he intends to dedicate his season to his late coach and mentor. San Antonio fell one win shy of matching the NBA’s best road start set by the Golden State Warriors last season. Kawhi Leonard scored 24 for San Antonio. Patty Mills added 16 points, hitting 4 of 6 3-pointers. Former Bull Pau Gasol had 13 points and 10 rebounds in his first game in Chicago since signing with San Antonio in the summer, but the Spurs lost a road game for the first time since Oklahoma City knocked them out in the Western Conference semifinals last season. Jamie Vardy symbolising decline of champion Leicester By ROB HARRIS AP Global Soccer Writer LONDON (AP) — After spending last season as one of the key forces behind Leicester’s rise to the Premier League title, Jamie Vardy is now the symbol of the team’s alarming decline. The rough diamond unearthed in non-league soccer helped power Leicester to its first English title by scoring 24 goals. Defences struggled to contain him as he scored in a record 11 consecutive Premier League games from August to November 2015. Now, the striker can barely get a shot on target and Leicester is struggling because of it. If Vardy fails to score against Manchester City on Saturday, it will be 11 consecutive games without a Premier League goal. And if results go against Leicester, the team could start the game in the relegation zone. The 29-year-old Vardy rejected the chance to join perennial topfour team Arsenal to see if Leicester could build on its fairytale season. That has happened in Europe, with Leicester qualifying for the round of 16 in its Champions League debut as group winners. Leicester collected as many

points in the six group games as in the 14 Premier League matches so far: 13. Vardy didn’t find the net once in five European games before being rested in Wednesday’s 5-0 loss to FC Porto, which didn’t affect Leicester’s status as group winners but was a high-profile humiliation. Vardy has only contributed two Premier League goals and managed a mere four shots on target in the competition dominated by Leicester so unexpectedly last season. What’s also been noticeable is how Vardy is no longer linking so effectively with Riyad Mahrez — if at all — as the supply line for scoring opportunities has fractured. Unless the symbiotic relationship between Vardy and Mahrez rejuvenates in the second half of the season, Leicester is in real danger of seeing its three-season stay in the Premier League end on the first anniversary of its title triumph in May. “Of course he’s not happy,” Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri said of the central England club’s Thai owner. “No one at the club is.” The one player Leicester couldn’t persuade to stay offsea-

Many at the club have publicly attributed the drop in domestic form to the desire to impress on the continent. Now there are no distractions for the next two months before the Champions League knockout phase begins. The visit of Manchester City is a timely reminder about the fate of champions. City was the last team to follow a title triumph with relegation, far back in 1938. City’s current mission is coping for the next four games without Sergio Aguero, with Kelechi Iheanacho replacing the banned striker in the starting lineup. City is fourth in the standings, four points behind Chelsea. SWANSEA vs SUNDERLAND With only one win in seven games as Swansea manager, Bob Bradley has seen his new team slide to the bottom. The American’s dire introduction to the Premier League was heightened when his disjointed team lost 5-0 at Tottenham last week. Is Bradley’s job already under threat? “You go in every day and at any moment the club can say ‘We need to make a change,’” Bradley said yesterday. “But if you worry about

LEICESTER CITY’S Jamie Vardy reacts after missing a chance to score against Sunderland in their English Premier League match at the Stadium of Light, in Sunderland, England, on December 3. (AP) son is being sorely missed. N’Golo Kante produced a league-leading 175 tackles and 156 interceptions last season before joining Chelsea. The midfielder would seem to perform the work of two men when he was on the field and without him Leicester’s defence has seemed easier to break through.

that, the players will spit you out fast. They will see through you. If I am telling the players they have to look adversity in the eye and have some courage, then I have got to do that, too.” Bradley shouldn’t give up hope. He only has to look to Sunderland, the team that was last when he took charge in south Wales and plays Swansea on Saturday. Sunderland has hauled itself to a point from safety by winning three of its last four games under David Moyes. BURNLEY vs BOURNEMOUTH There’s a meeting Saturday between two of the league’s four English managers. What is surprising is that only Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe, rather than Burnley counterpart Sean Dyche, was seriously linked with the England coaching job when it came up twice this year. In its second-ever top-flight campaign, Bournemouth is 10th in the 20-team standings after beating Liverpool last weekend by winning 4-3 from 3-1 down. Burnley, after making an instant return to the Premier League, is 15th.
